Designed to emulate the otherworldly sounds of the vintage Ampeg Scrambler, the FV10 circuit is loaded with tons of even-order harmonics to create unique octave/fuzz sounds that are dynamic- and frequency-dependent. This means that the FV10's effect is generated not only by which notes you play, but how you play them!

The FV10's effect is not for the faint of heart - Spongy, strangely synthetic guitar tones that swell up out of the depths of some black Void and then sizzle off into infinity. Octave-up OR octave-down effects can be produced, depending on the position of the controls and the playing position on the neck. Likewise, single notes or chords can both be played, each generating their own unique sounds.

The DS830's gain section features a dual-stage clipping design that combines the classic "808" clipping (diodes in feedback loop) with a pair of diodes to ground ala' the SD-9 and RAT. This design effectively clips the signal twice, and the round smooth clipping of the feedback loop followed by the edgier diodes to ground adds a degree of "chewiness" to the pedal's voice.

The DS830 features a complex tone control which acts like an active two-band filter by changing the gain of the treble and bass frequencies going into the Op Amp. The Bass and Treble controls are highly interactive and complementary. Notes: The FA10 Fuzz Elements Air accurately recreates the distinctive square wave clipping and octave harmonics of one of history's most desirable dirt boxes, the Super Fuzz.

The original Super Fuzz was created by Shin-Ei, but saw later incarnations under brands such as Apollo, Shaftesbury, JAX, Tiesco, Memphis, and most famously, Univox.

It was used on countless recordings in the late 60's & 70's, most notably the Who classic Live at Leeds. Long out of production, the Super Fuzz saw resurgence in the 90's during the Grunge & Alternative Rock era, appearing on the Beastie Boys' Gratitude, Mudhoney's Big Muff Super Fuzz album and Monster Magnet's stoner-rock classic, Superjudge.

The RTD800's independent and selectable Overdrive and Distortion modes are configured as follows:

The Overdrive circuit features two stages of clipping - a bi-directional clipping diode in the feedback loop of the op-amp and then a single-diode in the second stage for asymmetrical clipping.

The Distortion circuit also features two clipping stages, but configured differently - a bi-directional clipping diode in feedback loop of the op-amp, and then a 2nd stage with a passive bi-directional clipping circuit.

TECH TALK:
The CS550 circuit is similar to the Arion SCH-1 Stereo Chorus, or an updated Boss Chorus Ensemble. A high-impedance input buffer passes next into a Compander stage that acts as a compressor/expander, bringing the input level of the signal up to an ideal output level and keeping it there as the signal decays - this provides a good signal-to-noise ratio and gives the chorusing section a nice, steady signal to modulate.

The Chorus effect is produced by a Panasonic MN3102 low-voltage clock driver IC and a Panasonic MN3207 BBD IC which is controlled by the MN3102.

The Delay Time control exhibits an inverse relation between the delay time and the frequency shift of the chorus - as the delay time increases, the frequency that is shifted decreases. This inverse relation creates "double level" and "cancellation" peaks and notches at particular frequency points to create an amazingly realistic, three-dimensional chorus effect. In addition, the Delay Time control is interactive with the Rate and Depth controls, so that if you increase the Depth, the Delay Time range increases, and if you increase the Speed, the Delay Time changes faster.

After the Chorus section, the signal hits another Compander to level everything out and is then fed to an output buffer.

At the end of the circuit the signal is phase-split and sent to the two low-impedance stereo outputs - Output A is in-phase and Output B is phase inverted (90 degrees out of phase).

The CS550 features Mechanical True Bypass switching on both outputs via a Fujisoku 4PDT switch.

Maxon OSD-9 OD Soft Distortion Nine Series Pedal

Notes: In 1977 Maxon released their first effect pedal - the OD880 Overdrive/Soft Distortion - and the world would never be the same.

Employing a passive distortion circuit based around the 741 Op Amp (also used in the popular DOD 250), the OD880 was coveted for its warm and natural overdrive tone. The 880 was perfect for use as a transparent booster to take a tube-amp over the edge, offering singing blues tones unrivaled by other boxes.

Japanese guitar legend Char made the OD880 famous as his booster-of-choice, causing original versions to skyrocket into the $600 range on the vintage market.

In the early 90's Maxon reissued a limited edition run of the OD880. Yet with no distribution outside of Japan, this model went largely unnoticed by the rest of the world, leaving its amazing tone a secret to all save the discerning collector.

Now Maxon has once again resurrected the OD880 in the form of the OSD-9 Overdrive/Soft Distortion.

The OSD-9 offers a warm, open-sounding overdrive with a mild high-end roll off. It reacts smoothly to input level changes, offering a highly interactive response to player dynamics. Perfect as a stand-alone dirt box or for pushing an amp, the OSD-9 can also be stacked with other OD's to add clarity and character to their tone.

The OSD offers up all these classic sounds in Maxon's indestructible, industry standard 9-Series chassis. Modern-day utility features such as mechanical true bypass switching and a voltage regulator have also been added to provide smooth, consistent performance.

Over 30 years after the original OD880 was released, the OSD-9 promises to bestow the legendary tones of its predecessor upon a new generation of discerning players - are you ready?

TECH TALK:
The OSD-9 signal path starts with a 2SK246 jFET buffer which provides high input impedance and low output impedance into the 1st Op Amp - a UA741CP. The UA741CP is a vintage style 741 single Op Amp with superior resistance to latching up (distorting in a non-musical way) - it is not as "precise" as modern IC's, giving it a more vintage, warmer, "analog-ish" response.

This 1st Op Amp is set up to provide a 20 to 120x gain in signal.

After the 1st Op Amp we have a pair of diodes to ground, just like classic boxes such as the MXR Distortion+, Pro Co Rat and Boss DS-1. From here it's into another UA741CP with an amplification factor of 10 to boost the signal back to a high enough level to drive the input of an amplifier if necessary - a feature that the Distortion+ and DS-1 do not offer.

From here the signal is routed to a 4558 Op Amp unity gain amplifier, a volume control voltage divider, and then another unity gain 4558 to provide a low impedance output.

The OSD-9 uses a NJM2374A Voltage converter to stabilize the operating voltage at 9 VDC regardless of the voltage level coming off the battery, providing a smoother, more consistent operation and tonality.

The OSD-9 features Mechanical True Bypass switching via a Fujisoku 4PDT switch - the input of circuit is switched to ground when bypassed.

NOTE ON POWERING THE OSD-9 - this pedal's voltage regulator IC requires a high inrush current of approximately 2000 mA upon startup. When using with a Power Brick such as the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+, this pedal should be connected to a high current power jack when possible.

If it is not possible to connect to a high current jack, you can power the OSD-9 by leaving a battery in the pedal. Upon initial start-up, unplug the external DC power input cable, engage the pedal, and then plug the DC power input cable back in - the pedal will now power up normally off the external power supply until you power down your pedalboard.

Speed and Width controls allow adjustment of the flanging from slow takeoff to sonic boom.

In similar fashion, Maxon has forgone the use of a distortion circuit in favor of a voltage-controlled white noise generator to more accurately simulate the sound of a jet in flight. Featuring a combination of VCA and VCF circuits, the VJR-9's Jet effect reacts to playing dynamics within a range preset by the Sensitivity, Range and Jet controls.

These two circuits can be used separately or in combination to create a wide variety of effects from subtle to extreme - classic chorus and flanging; tremolo-like auto-wah; massive sky-is-falling Jet sweeps; bizarre and other-worldly metallic tones bordering on ring-modulation - all these and more are possible with the VJR-9.

The VJR-9 also features a jack to connect an external switch (bypass or momentary) for the Jet function, allowing the user to add the effect in against the Flange when desired to accentuate certain note, phrases, or song sections.

The VJR-9's internal voltage-doubling circuitry provides maximum headroom to eliminate input distortion. The higher operating voltage also allows it to be used in an FX loop in order to place the effect post-gain.

The voice of the Dark Star.

The Dark Star is what we would use to create long reverberated pads. The noises underneath the lead. The mood setter. That's the Dark Star. The way a song feels. That's because of the Dark Star.

At its heart, the Dark Star is a Reverb. Then the Reverb signal passes through three possible modes: Pitch, Delay and Crush. CTRL 1 and CTRL 2 correspond with the selected mode. In Pitch, you've got two independent pitch controls for + and - an octave. In Delay, you've got the Delay Time and Delay Feedback. In Crush, you've got a pitch control for +/- an octave and then a control for Bit Crush. The Mix and Reverb knobs control the mix of dry/wet signal and the decay of the reverb, respectively.

The Dark Star has two footswitches. The Bypass switch is your standard on/off True Bypass switch. The Hold switch is a momentary footswitch that when pressed, will lock in whatever note is being played through the reverb effect. This will sustain as long as the Hold switch is pressed. If the Mix control is set less than 100% wet, you can continue to play over the sustaining reverb signal.

The Dark Star now features an expression out jack and clickless switching. The output level can be tweaked via an internal trimpot for boost, slight drop, or unity gain.

Notes: The Black Fountain reflects back to the days before digital delay, emulating the sounds of the famed and elusive "oil can delay" units. These units emphasized a chorus-like modulation on the repeats of the effect signal as well as a beautiful and warm repeat cycle.

The Modern mode emulates the classic long delay "oil can" units such as the Morley EDL, Tel-Ray Model 10 and Fender Echo-Reverb. The Time and Repeat controls mimic the functions of the vintage units, while the Fluid control introduces modulation based on the characteristic "wobble" of the electrostatic delay platter. The Vintage mode is similar in function to the Modern mode, but has a grittier and gainier feel to the repeats. Both the Modern and Vintage mode have a delay time of 800 milliseconds.

The Organ Tone mode is based on the Tel-Ray Deluxe Organ Tone, Fender Dimension IV and other short-delay "oil can" units. The vintage units had a fixed delay time of approximately 20 milliseconds, which is implemented here, but the Black Fountain goes above and beyond the original units by incorporating variable Rate and Depth controls for the modulation effect. In addition, the Mix control is capable of dialing a 100% wet signal so a vibrato effect may be produced. The Organ Tone mode also features a simple reverb that mimics the single-spring tank in the original Deluxe Organ Tone effect. The Organ Tone mode has a delay time of 211 milliseconds.

The Black Fountain now features an expression out jack and clickless switching. The output level can be tweaked via an internal trimpot for boost, slight drop, or unity gain.

Notes: EQ's may not be as sexy as overdrives, but when used properly they can add a wide variety of useful new colors to your existing guitar rig.

The GE601 Graphic Equalizer covers six carefully selected frequency bands over a five octave range with 12 dB of Boost/Cut per band (100, 200, 400 & 800 Hz, 1.6 & 3.2 KHz respectively). There's also a Master Level control with 12 dB of overall Boost/Cut.

Adjusting these controls, the GE601 can be used to fine tune your sound in an infinite variety of ways, a few of which are detailed below:

Pickup Simulator (Humbucker to single coil) - To turn a Humbucker into a Single Coil, cut 200, 400, & 800 Hz and Boost 100 Hz & 1.6 KHz.

TECH TALK:
After a low-impedance input buffer, the GE601 splits its signal into 6 parallel EQ bands each powered by its own Op Amp (JRC4558). Through the sweep of the slider you can cut or boost the selected frequency.

Boost is created by feeding the effected signal back into the Op Amp, creating an effect of exponential multiplication of that frequency - the higher the slider, the more of the effected signal is fed back through the EQ Op Amp chain.

Maxon developed the OD808 circuit more than 40 years ago, and since then it's become the most used, most imitated and most lauded overdrive circuit of all time. While the 808-style overdrive circuit is commonplace nowadays, in 1979 it was a unique design and an industry first.

The secret behind the legendary "808 tone" lies in the amplifier section of the circuit. Rather than having separate amplifier and clipping stages, the OD808 features a signal-distorting diode (Panasonic #MA150) located in the negative feedback loop of the amplifier stage.

The OD808 distorts signal in the amplifier circuit itself which yields a smoother, milder, more natural sounding distortion than a separate clipping stage. This is also the reason that the IC type used in the circuit has such a large impact on the unit's tone. The Reissue uses the correct JRC4558 Op Amp that made the 808 the tone of legend.

It should be noted that the Reissue Series OD808 uses different output resistors than the original version. Vintage TS808's are susceptible to microphonic noise due to static electricity buildup on the chassis. To improve performance, the positions of the output resistors on the reissue OD808 were reversed and their values increased in order to reduce noise levels. This circuit change has no audible affect on the sound of the unit, save for reducing the noise levels.

The secret behind the PT999's timeless tone lies in the fact that its circuit is exactly the same as it was when first introduced in 1974. While many "reissue" effects are far from true to the original designs, Maxon has taken great pains to keep the Phase Tone unchanged for close to 45 years.

By adjusting the lone Rate control, a wide variety of expressive phasing nuances can be coaxed from the PT999 - all of them whisper quiet and amazingly transparent. Its minimalist circuit doesn't get in the way of your guitar tone - it simply accentuates it, working equally well to spice up clean or distorted sounds.

If you demand classic phase shifting effects without compromising your guitar's signature tone, the PT999 Phase Tone has no equals.

The PT999 is the easiest way to replicate classic 70's phasing tones without dropping $300-500 (or more!) for a vintage Phase 90.

TECH TALK:
The PT999's four-stage phasing circuit offers 720 degrees of phasing sweep variable from .2 to 14 Hz (cycles per second). The PT999's FET's (Toshiba #2SK246) are carefully sorted and matched by hand to produce the smoothest phasing sweep possible with low noise. Unlike some phasers, the PT999 runs negative feedback of the signal to each phase-shifting FET for less signal distortion.

The four-pole shift of the PT999 creates a chewy, organic phase with a subtle drive to the signal. The 4 phasing Op Amps work together to emphasize this phase point, as each successive one accentuates the notch of the previous, creating a very resonant effect. The subtle drive and resonance really bring out pick attack and add a degree of real, dirty dimensionality.

Internal trimmers adjust center frequency and width of the phasing sweep (factory calibrated, we recommend adjustment of these trimmers be left to a qualified technician).

TECH TALK:
The CS-9 Pro circuit is similar to the Arion SCH-1 Stereo Chorus, or an updated Boss Chorus Ensemble. A high-impedance input buffer passes next into a Compander stage that acts as a compressor/expander, bringing the input level of the signal up to an ideal output level and keeping it there as the signal decays - this provides a good signal-to-noise ratio and gives the chorusing section a nice, steady signal to modulate.

The Chorus effect is produced by a Panasonic MN3102 low-voltage clock driver IC and a Panasonic MN3207 BBD IC which is controlled by the MN3102. Though the 3207/3201 combo has less delay range than other BBD's of this type, the difference is negligible and the inherent decay of signal quality adds "vintage lo-fi warmth" to the signal.

After the Chorus section, the signal hits another Compander to level everything out and is then fed to an output buffer.

At the end of the circuit the signal is phase-split and sent to the two low-impedance stereo outputs - Output A is in-phase and Output B is phase inverted (90 degrees out of phase).

The CS-9 Pro features Mechanical True Bypass switching on both outputs via a Fujisoku 4PDT switch.

Notes: The AF100 Bee Baa was Roland's answer to the gnarly, nasty guitar boxes coming out of the USA & the UK in the late 60's and early 70's.

A combination of transistor Fuzz, Octavia, and Treble Booster, the Bee Baa's massive metal housing & triple stomp switches provided ample evidence that this pedal was not to be trifled with.

Even Maxon was hard-pressed to reproduce the AF100's might in their compact chassis format. Opting to stick with the Fuzz aspects of the Bee Baa, they decided to leave out the Treble Boost section of the circuit when developing this next Fuzz Elements model.

TECH TALK:
Input signal goes through a simple High-Pass filter into a transistor that's set up as an emitter/follower (high input impedance - low output impedance). After this it's into an Op Amp stage designed to give a gain range of 67 to 567and a Low-Pass Filter with a corner frequency of approximately 1540 Hz.

From here it's on to a set of opposing-direction diodes to ground and a tone control that is reminiscent of the Boss DS-1 (kind of a Big Muff dual High and Low cut - ending up with a mid scoop that has a high frequency limiting resistor with corner frequencies of 867Hz and 234Hz respectively).

The SD-9's dual diodes to ground give a crunchier, chewier distortion than the popular 808-style "diodes in feedback loop" configuration. Likewise, the SD-9's mid scoop is practically the antithesis of the 808's infamous mid hump.

Notes: You may have noticed that the Maxon AF-9 Auto Filter has undergone a facelift.

Specifically, the Sensitivity & Peak faders have been replaced by rotary pots and the slider switches are now toggles.

This change was made out of necessity due to the discontinuation of the fader pots that had been used on this model for nearly 40 years (original release date was 1981).

While these changes may have been necessary, Maxon saw no reason to update the AF-9's classic, watery, 3-dimensional filtering that so many players have to come to count on over the years. So, you can expect the latest version of this classic quacker to stand up to the original.

While change may be inevitable, if it ain't broke, then don't fix it.

The Maxon AF9 Auto Filter takes the most desirable auto-wah and swept filter effects and offers them up in a compact, user-friendly package. Opto-coupler circuitry produces the shimmering, watery filtering of legendary vintage units. Threshold and Peak sliders control the degree of effect; while Range and Drive switches determine range and direction of the filter sweep. Three selectable filter types (Low Pass, Band Pass, and Hi Pass) and a frequency range of 100 Hz - 4 kHz allow the AF9 to function with virtually any instrument or input signal.

TECH TALK:
The AF-9 is Maxon's version of the venerable Mu-Tron III envelope filter circuit (original version, not HAZ reissue). The biggest difference between the two circuits is that the AF-9 runs on a single 9V supply while the Mu-Tron ran at 18V.

In addition, the III had a Gain pot which controlled the output level of the pedal as well as the Threshold of the Filter - this was an awkward design, as it prevented increasing the filter sensitivity without raising the output volume of the pedal.

These items aside, the basic structures of the two circuits are very similar. The AF9 starts with a unity gain buffer Op Amp and then splits the signal into control and effected circuits. The control circuit is shaped by the Sensitivity pot and amplified by an Op Amp. This control signal then travels to a series of two photocouplers.

The effected portion of the circuit split goes into a three Op Amp filter network that is almost identical to the Mu-Tron's, right down to the Low Pass, Band Pass, and High Pass switch that selects which portion of the filter network is used. These filters are triggered by the CdS cell side of the previously mentioned photocouplers.

The AF-9's Range is selected by changing the gain structure of the filters. After the filter network the signal is run through a unity gain buffer to provide a low impedance output.

The Nine Series Overdrive Pro+ takes Maxon's classic OD-9 circuit and serves it up with two side orders of Whoop-Ass in the form of 9/18 volt operation and a Mid Boost switch.

TECH TALK:

The OD-9 Pro+ starts with a jFET buffer which simultaneously offers high input impedance and low impedance into the rest of the pedal - this helps to preserve high-end clarity in the signal.

The first tone stage is the Mid Boost feature: A switchable Op Amp with clipping diodes in the feedback loop. When this stage is not in the signal path the pedal behaves like a standard OD9. With this stage in the path it adds subtle gain and definition to the sound, similar to a cascading gain stage.

From here it's on to the standard OD-9 circuitry: A clipping Op Amp with diodes in the feedback loop that clip the signal gradually as well as a high pass filter that keep the low frequencies from being distorted as much as high. Next there comes a passive LP filter and then an active tone stage. After the tone stage it's through the Volume pot, an Op Amp boost stage which bumps the signal 3X and then sends it to the output.

The Pro+ also utilizes an NJM2374A voltage conversion chip that changes the 9V power input into 9V+ and 9V-, increasing the headroom of the Op Amps (9V to 18V swing) and giving a bigger, chunkier sound to the overdrive.

Notes: Bigger, Badder, Bolder - these are the best three words to describe the ST-9 Pro+ Super Tube. The latest and possibly last incarnation of Maxon's legendary 808, the ST-9 features more output, more gain, and more tonal options for the player who simply needs - well, MORE.

Starting with a circuit loosely based on the classic 808 architecture, the ST-9 adds a Mid Enhance knob to control the amount of midrange boost. This knob functions similarly to an amp's presence control, boosting perceived volume and gain as it's turned up.

You may be wondering why an 808-style pedal would need more presence - introducing the ST-9's Low Boost switch.

The Low Boost switch is the ST-9's secret weapon - This unassuming switch completely changes the character of the pedal, adding beefy low end and increased saturation via a LP filter and an alternate set of clipping diodes.

If this wasn't enough, the ST-9 also offers 9- or 18-volt operation via an internal charge pump. Run at 9 for the classic 808 sound and feel or switch to 18 for increased headroom, improved dynamics, and a bigger, chunkier tone to the overdrive.

From bluesy overdrive to diabolical dirt box, the ST-9 is a devilishly diverse pedal that can punish a clean amp or turn a dirty amp into a wall of doom.

The OD808 re-imagined with increased output level, additional saturation and a more diverse palette of tonal options.

TECH TALK:
Input signal goes to a 2SK246 jFET buffer that provides a high input impedance and low output impedance into the 1st Op Amp, a NJM (JRC) 4558D. This 1st 4558 is set up as a tweakable mid boost, with a potentiometer controlling the gain of the boost. The signal goes from the mid boost Op Amp to the second clipping Op Amp, which is set up for a 10 to 110x gain with switchable sets of diodes in the feedback loop and a switchable capacitor to boost bass.

After the clipping Op Amp the signal is routed to an 808-style tone control and unity gain amplifier, after which the signal is passed through a volume potentiometer, another unity gain amplifier (to provide low output impedance) and then the true bypass switch. The use of these unity gain amplifiers helps to preserve high end in the signal which can be lost when passing through the volume control.

The ST9 Pro+ uses an NJM2374A Voltage converter to double the 9V input to 18 VDC, providing more clean headroom before the Op Amps distort. The ST9 circuit is switchable between 9 and 18VDC via an internal switch.

Notes: Over the past 10 years Maxon effects have become key ingredients in the guitar rigs of countless metal bands. Notable artists such as Killswitch Engage, Arch Enemy, Shadows Fall and All That Remains have come to rely on Maxon overdrives for their brutal guitar tones on stage and in the studio.

The irony here (pun intended) is that Maxon has never offered a pedal tailored to the needs of the metal guitarist - until now.

Introducing the Maxon SM-9 Pro+ Super Metal - specifically designed for high-gain distortion tones, the SM-9's flexible saturation circuit can churn out everything from classic NWOBHM crunch through to the throaty chunk of today's drop-tuned metal extremes.

Developing such a pedal was no easy task, and the Pro+ was on the drawing board for years before Maxon felt it was ready for release. Several unique "tricks" were incorporated into its design to create a pedal that is as versatile as it is merciless.

Forgoing the use of conventional tone controls, the SM-9 instead features Scoop and Edge knobs to dial in the riffage.

The Scoop control is a mid-band elimination filter with a range from 200 Hz - 2 KHz. This control adjusts the frequency range where the pedal's midrange cut is centered.

Once the amount of mid scoop is determined, any high-end loss can be dialed back in using the Edge control - a Hi-cut shelving filter continuously variable between 2-15 kHz.

These two controls are highly interactive and work much like a parametric equalizer - Adjusting both knobs simultaneously allows the user to find the perfect mix of brutality and clarity.

The SM-9's Gain control adjusts the degree of saturation the pedal provides. This control is actually a dual-ganged pot that increases the amount of distortion while simultaneously boosting the upper midrange band up to 20 dB at 1 kHz.

By boosting and cutting specific frequency bands in relation to Gain, the SM-9's controls allow the user to sculpt brutal, beefy guitar tones that retain note clarity and definition.

The Pro+ also offers switchable 9- or 18-volt operation. In Classic mode, the SM-9 runs at the incoming 9 volts DC, greatly extending battery life. Switching to stabilized 18-volt operation increases headroom, frequency range, and dynamic response of the pedal.

Using the SM-9's controls and voltage options, an almost unlimited variety of monstrous high-gain tones can be dialed in. Notes: The RTC600 is like taking the finest studio-grade tube compressors and "squeezing" them all down into a single stompbox.

The RTC600 starts out with the same patented DBX compression circuit used in Maxon's popular CP-9 Pro+ pedal - this circuit provides a very smooth, transparent, almost "glassy" compression with very low noise floor, even at maximum settings. Your guitar sounds like your guitar, only with compression added to smooth out the dynamics.

The RTC600's dual-triode tube is positioned pre-compression, adding classic valve warmth to the signal without increasing noise levels.

With up to +30 dB of clean Gain, the RTC can be used as a clean booster or as an attenuator to clean up an already dirty amp.

The Addition of Attack and Release controls to the circuit allow for a wider variety of compression effects, including "Brick Wall" limiting and "Soft Knee" compression.

The RTC600 features an internal charge pump circuit that bumps the incoming voltage up to 25 volts, providing massive headroom and full-range frequency response. The RTC600 can be used with any instrument and for a variety of applications - it can be sent into an amp's front end, placed in an effects loop, or used as an outboard processor for home recordings.

The RTC600 features True Mechanical Bypass switching using a 3PDT switch. The RTC600 comes complete with the Maxon AC2009 9-Volt power supply, an auto sensing digital power supply that can be used anywhere in the world.

While most overdrive's pass some degree of clean signal, the VOP-9 allows you to control the amount via the dual-function Drive knob - a dual-ganged pot that controls the amount of Gain as well as the mix between clean and distorted signals.

The VOP-9 was designed with the seasoned guitarist in mind, yet it can be a great addition to any player's rig.

TECH TALK:
The VOP circuit is basically a hot-rodded 808 with a few special tricks. After a JFET input buffer, the signal is sent a dual-gang Drive pot where it is split between a clean gain stage and the overdrive stage. As the Drive knob is turned up, more signal is sent to the overdrive stage while the drive of this stage is also turned up. If the Drive knob is turned down, more signal is sent to the clean gain stage and the drive of the overdrive stage is turned down. At 12 o'clock on the Drive knob, signal is split 50/50 clean/overdriven.

The VOP-9 features a standard 808-style tone control. However, the entire pedal is running at 18 volts via an internal voltage doubler that bumps up the clean headroom and provides greater output and a fuller frequency response than the typical 808 circuit - in other words, no midrange spike!

Even though the VOP circuit is running at 18 volts, it powers up off standard 9 VDC via battery or a standard external power adaptor.

The OOD-9 takes Maxon's resurrected OSD-9 circuit and replaces the NOS 741 Op Amps with current-production NJM (JRC) 4558's.

TECH TALK:
The OOD-9 signal path starts with a 2SK246 jFET buffer which provides a high input impedance and low output impedance into the 1st Op Amp - a NJM (JRC) 4558. This 1st Op Amp is set up to provide a 20 to 120x gain in signal.

After the 1st Op Amp we have a pair of diodes to ground, just like classic boxes such as the MXR Distortion+, Pro Co Rat and Boss DS-1. From here it's into another NJM4558 with an amplification factor of 10 to boost the signal back to a high enough level to drive the input of an amplifier if necessary - a feature that the Dist+ and DS-1 do not offer.

From here the signal is routed to a 4558 Op Amp unity gain amplifier, a volume control voltage divider, and then another unity gain 4558 to provide a low impedance output.

The OOD-9 uses a NJM2374A Voltage converter to stabilize the operating voltage at 9 VDC regardless of the voltage level coming off the battery, providing a smoother, more consistent operation and tonality.

The OOD-9 features Mechanical True Bypass switching via a Fujisoku 4PDT switch - the input of circuit is switched to ground when bypassed.
