Feels Rite EP
Cat: POEM 013.
Deep House
  1. By Myself
  2. By Myself (dub)
  3. Club Bang
  4. Serpent Energy
  5. Fired Up
Review: Atlanta-based Stefan Ringer may not be one of the highest profile deep house producer's around, but over the last six years he's quietly amassed a decent discography. "Feels Rite" is his first outing of 2020 and sees him appear on People Of Earth for the very first time. Opener "Be Myself" is particularly potent, with Ringer offering up a loose, languid and soulful take on MPC-made house full of distant male vocals, rich chords and sci-fi synths. "Club Bang", a trippy late night affair that sounds like a future basement-bothering classic, is another standout cut, though the warm and toasty, funk-tinged deep house jazziness of closing cut "Fired Up" is almost as inspired.

  1. The Upsetters - "Popcorn"
  2. Dave Barker & The Upsetters - "Tight Spot"
Review: For the second salvo in their "loud cut series", the Harlem Shuffle label has raided the vaults of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's legendary studio band, "The Upsetters". On the A-side you'll find "Popcorn" from 1970's "Eastwood Rides Again" album, a hard-edged, Ska-era rhythm & blues rump-shaker that sounds like a Jamaican take on the Meters. The flipside plays host to "Tight Spot", a dubbed-out reggae riddim over which tight saxophone riffs ascend impressively while deejay/singer/mic man attempts to get the dance going with some choice words and phrases. Like the A-side, it's a genuine dancefloor workout.

  1. It's Time (5:10)
  2. Forum (5:03)
  3. Euphoria In Ginza (4:49)
  4. No Romantic (4:55)
Review: Time Passages boss Binh is a big fan of Innershades. Last year he brought the Belgian producer to the label for the very first time and here offers up another four tracks from the rave-loving rising star. He hits the ground running with "It's Time", a warehouse-ready throb-job full of new beat riffs and creepy electronics, before offering up another funky Euro techno cut that sounds like it could have been played at an after-party in 1990 ("Forum"). Elsewhere, "Euphoria In Ginza" is a deliciously chiming and melodious breakbeat-house workout, while "No Romantic" is another retro-futurist romp full of squelchy synth bass and rushing, turn-of-the-90s style nostalgic riffs.

  2. Negative Space (5:50)
  3. Sholay (Kris Baha remix) (6:17)
  4. Negative Space (Multiple Man Sniffing Anxiety remix) (6:20)
Review: London based French producer Mondowski follows a spate of recent releases on Relish and Ombra with a new club-orientated vision for London label and clubnight SC&P. Following his remix services on label's debut and 4th releases, Mondowski makes his full lavel debut with an electro inspired turn. Dancefloor orientated lead track Sholay finds a mesmerizing path somewhere between extroverted 80's electro and celebratory spiritual transcendence and gets the remix treatment from Pinkman's Kris Baha who subverts the original by turning the electro backbone up to 11. The EP's B-side, Negative Space, voyages into darker electro territories with Kraftwerkesque synths, rolling pads and a motorik bassline, all of which provides the launchpad for Multiple Man to turn out a pitch black EBM banger.

Review: Emotional Response is delighted to present a special project, a collection of music from Bartosz Kruczynski, recorded for "Selected Media" and presented here as a time-piece of his continuing works.

Initially known as one half of sample based project Ptaki (The Very Polish Cut Outs / Transatlantyk), Kruczynski first appeared for Emotional Response as The Phantom for the first series of SchleiBen in 2015. Featuring two works of deep 'fourth world' sounds, they highlighted a shift to more mellow, synthetic and hazy compositions.

His break out came, however, when he explored this sound further on his eponymous album Baltic Beat, for the acclaimed Growing Bin Records. This has been augmented with the recent club based music as one half of the wonderful Earth Trax (Rhythm Section International / Phonica Records) project.

Here though, Kruczynski returns to the ambient and ethereal - plus a touch of dub techno - to showcase his expansive collaborative work with Polish studio, TVP Culture. Given free artistic license, the 15 'short form' recordings included here were for programming, in the main, on modern Polish Art including the likes of Magdalena Abakanowicz, Miroslaw Balka and Tadeusz Kantor, as well as some international aspects for Enrico Prampolini, Ai Weiwei and Monica Bonvicini.

Taken from over 70 episodes the material included recollects imagery, video and memory to present a series of short vignettes that together create one whole. Minimal and hazy ambience (V, VII, VIII, XI, XII) envisages classic melodies and chords and is accompanied by further 'fourth world' pieces (I, II, III, VII, X) that present an oeuvre that is recognisably the music of Kruczynski, while remaining fresh and perfectly meditative.

A counter can be found in the atmospheric dub works (IV, IX, XIV) that hint at echo chamber environs to get infinitely lost in. As an album then, "Selected Media" can be heard as a snapshot to Kruczynski's music journey, a meeting of art and music that is oft overlooked but very much essential.

  1. Cooper Saver - "Tell"
  2. Pional - "Purple"
  3. Marc Pinol - "Vol De Nit"
  4. Velmondo - "Transubstantiation"
Review: While the title of Hivern Discs' excellent "Fragments" series may suggest a kind of odds-and-ends approach to A&R, each of the four volumes to date has been anything but sketchy and throwaway. This fifth instalment is every bit as alluring as its predecessors. Check first Cooper Saver's clandestine chugger "Tell" - all druggy modular vibrations, echoing Horror organs and foreboding chords - before turning your attention to the tuneful Boards Of Canada style lead lines and sparse, lo-fi house beats of Pional's "Purple". Arguably even better is the stripped-back, acid-driven headiness of Marc Pinol's "Vol De Nit", while Velmondo's "Transubstantiation" is a fine slo-mo freak out full of devilishly pitched-down drums, weirdo electronics and synthesized marimba melodies.

AESTHETIC 08 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Neutron Starlet
  2. Din Eter
  3. Jalea Viului
  4. Un Vechi Inceput
Review: The latest drop on Aesthetic comes from Gruia, a Romanian producer with serious credentials thanks to his recent appearance on Sonet. "Neutron Starlet" is a trippy, playful minimal tech house workout with zippy sounds darting all over the mix. "Din Eter" gets into a more pronounced swing, and uses a sustained pad to create an ethereal mood that should inject some spiritual energy into the party. "Jalea Viului" keeps things steady and rolling, but there's still space for flamboyant FX buried in the mix. "Un Vechi Inceput" finishes the record off on a tense note, using minor keys to keep you on your toes without slouching on those all-important wiggles and squiggles to keep things funky.

Review: Having ended 2019 with must-check releases on Whities and Modern Hypnosis (the latter in cahoots with long-standing collaborator Mystik), Pugilist comes out swinging on his first outing of 2020, a Nous Klaer label debut that offers up three high grade workouts. While hypnotic opener "Horizon" is a fine chunk of warm, dubby, spaced-out broken techno, it's the sub-heavy intensity of the track that follows, "Shimmer", that hits home harder. Featuring throbbing, mind-altering bass tones, mutant electronics, ghostly tones and a tough, infectious rhythm, it's amongst his boldest and most mind-altering tracks to date. If that's not enough to set your heart racing, closing cut "Untitled" is a metallic, otherworldly techno beast.
