Review: Commencing the new Italian imprint Frole in style, Danny Ward, better known as Dubble D, is presenting his Moodymanc alias in a convoluted artist mix up that needn't raise concerns about the quality of house music contained within. "ZZZ" is pared right down to a minimal hum, with just the bare essentials of drums at work while developed content thrums away at the core of the track for those that listen closely enough. Volta Cab brings a much bigger sound to the remix, slapping some chunky chords and choice bleeps over the top and beefing the drums up no end. "Akom" returns to more restrained tones, with plenty of space for vocal snippets to echo in and pristinely arranged drums, while "Inc" warms things up a treat with chord-infected smooth house tones and a much breezier outlook overall.

Review: To date, Lee Gamble's UIQ label has done a fine job squaring the spotlight on some lesser heralded exponents of cutting edge club experimentation such as Glaswegian Lanark Artefax, Cairo-based Zuli and Latvian N1L. The addition of Budapest's Stephan Olbricht is a step out of this tradition then, with the Hungarian a well-known and regarded name for his work on Opal Tapes, Farbwechsel, Gang Of Ducks and most recently, Lobster Theremin. On the basis of this four-track ZZM EP, Olbricht does fit right in on UIQ however, packing a quartet of punch-drunk ambient techno rollage that sounds like Gamble himself after a few hours on the green. Actress and Huerco S are other names that spring to mind, "J UC" has that similar feeling of stasis to it that the Werk Discs boss does so well whilst closer "F10a1" is quite heavenly.

Review: The musical juggernauts that respond the respective calls of 'Tiga' and 'Zombie Nation' converge as ZZT for new single "ZZafrika". Review: German pop label ZYX played a key role in spreading the popularity of Italo-disco around Europe in the 1980s, and continues to support Euro-disco and Italian synth-pop to this day. New Generation Bootmix, named in tribute to the label's popular '80s Italo megamix series, offers a non-stop, 30-track mix-up of contemporary Euro-disco, Italo-pop and decidedly camp synth-pop. Given the synth sounds, breathy Europeans singing in English and obvious Bobby 'O' influences, it's like a blast from the past. While an acquired taste, there are some notable highlights. These include Modeone's piano-laden, semi-Balearic "Sometimes", The Sweeps' early Pet Shop Boys-ish "Facing The Night" and Vyck Vyo's chiming "Angelina".

What he's delivered, showcased across this excellent compilation, is genuinely excellent, with his versions remaining faithful to the originals while stripping out any duff elements and adding a dash of late-night, club-ready sleaze. Highlights include Dallum's 'instrumental dub' style reworks of Mono Band's 'Ghost Town' and Lectric Workers' 'Robot Is Systematic', a pleasingly mind-altering revision of 'Witch' by Helen, and a brilliant rearrangement of P Lion's anthemic 'Happy Children'.

Review: Back in the early '80s, German imprint ZYX was one of the only labels promoting Italo-disco and Italian synth-pop worldwide. They're still at it, as their "Italo Disco new wave" compilations prove. Here, though, they blend newer material with original 1980s fodder on the sixteenth (count 'em) installment of their long-running Italo Disco Collection series. By now, we should all know what to expect: the sort of Italo-disco and synth-pop that once provided inspiration for UK acts like the Pet Shop Boys (the famed PSB Fairlight stab makes a number of appearances) and sound tracked both dodgy holiday romances and the dancefloors of gay clubs in the 1980s. It also features Massara's "Margherita (Love in the Sun)" - a true underground Italo classic - which is almost worth the admission price on its own.

Now the proud owners of a vast back catalogue of European club hits and pop curiosities, it regularly flexes its muscles with the decidedly camp ZYX Italo Disco Collection series. The three discs that make up this 14th volume contain some killer Italo material - see the Bobby 'O'-inspired "You & Me" by Galactic Warriors - but also plenty of Eurodisco, Europop and Stock, Aitken & Waterman-ish Hi-NRG pop. While there's some fluff, the highlights far outweigh the duffers, with genuine curiosities - Duke Lake's "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life"-inspired "Satisfaction, Love & Passion" amongst them - providing ample inspiration for Italo-inspired DJs.

Review: Although best known these days as Cab Drivers, Berlin's Daniel Paul and Jens "DJ Zky" Augustowsky have been working together under different aliases since 1994. Karo was one of their earliest aliases, with the Zwo 12" - in which "Zwo Fremde" originally appeared - slipping out in 1995. It's good to see the track getting a second airing, because it's arguably one of the finest tech-house tracks of all time. Loopy, hypnotic, tracky and blessed with some wonderful cyclical synth motifs, it feels like the missing link between Detroit-influenced UK tech-house of that period and the more dub-focused sound of Berlin. This time round it's accompanied by the specially recorded "Backside 50", a similarly slick, melodious and locked-in cut bristling with spacey pads, darting acid bass and intergalactic electronics.
