Love Is Enough (Khidja dubstrumental) (6:27)
Love Is Enough (Alphonse dub) (5:57)
Review: Previously spotted on Emotional [Especial] with the fantastic Love Is Enough 12", Plus Instruments get the remix treatment in a classic '80s style with the Dub Is Enough single. The producers tasked with delivering versions vary wildly, but they make for a strong combination. Jamie Paton's "Cloudy Dub-Out" is masterful, simmering the elements down to a sensual bassline and delicate ripples on top, while Luke Solomon brings his bumpy, off-kilter house style to the table. Khidja has a more dramatic, synth laden approach and Alphonse creates a dusty, funky roller out of that killer bassline groove.

Review: Kris Baha had a big year in 2019 with the release of his debut album on CockTail d'Amore and an EP on Pinkman, and now the Australian body music man in Berlin is back with a high-pressure heater for [Emotional] Especial. "Barely Alive" is the kind of sinewy proto-industrial cut that will appeal to fans of Ministry's earlier work, when the synths reigned supreme and there was pop to match the noir. Especial then call on a cast of remixers to interpret the track in different ways, from Timothy J Fairplay amping up the dystopian disco tropes to Das Ding creating a sleek electro-funk twist with the original's gothic undertones intact.

Faxes From The Future (6:48)
Review: It's been a hot minute since Timothy J. Fairplay slipped on his Junior Fairplay guise, but he's done just that for this bleep-tastic new 12" on (Emotional) Especial. "End Of Love" is unabashed in its embrace of early Yorkshire techno tones, making a fine job of resurrecting the bleep spectre and letting it shake up the dance once more. Roy Of The Ravers is a smart choice of remixer, and he brings an off-kilter acid rub to the table in his idiosyncratic, braindance-inflected style. The B-side is equal laden with purposefully dusty dance grooves transplanted from the late 80s / early 90s, with "Faxes From The Future" hitting a particularly sharp point in its lazy breakbeat roll and the clanging harmonies of the stabs.

Glint AM (DJ Normal 4 Vibemixx) (5:15)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Travelling both space and time with his constructions, Alphonse Rozel makes a welcome return on [Emotional] Especial after the Same For Me EP released last year. The incisive hit of the disco beat on "Smokey" is hard to ignore, while the booming toms and African chant lines feed into a perfect slice of dancefloor dynamite from an unspecified era. Meanwhile The Pilotwings take to the track with glee, whipping out some crisp breaks to drop over the proceedings in a pleasingly early '90s manner. "Glint AM" is quite the foil to the A side, leaning on some uplifting synth chords to provide the magic around the crafty drum programming.

Review: The pairing of Jeffrey Sfire with Samuel Long (aka PC Music producer Sophie) produced some discoid synth-pop manna for the CockTail d'Amore label when it first appeared back in 2013. Now the duo have been handed over to [Emotional] Especial, who have tasked two choice remixers with turning out some fresh versions of the tracks from the original EP. Timothy J. Fairplay keeps the wave dark and cold on his remix of "Sfire 2", using noirish synth lines to interplay with Sfire's on-point vocal. Meanwhile Willie Burns ramps up the atmospherics with some heavyweight pads on his first remix of "Sfire 3" before turning the original into a cheeky peak time burner for his second.

Review: Originally operating in the 80s industrial scene, Plus Instruments have recently found a new lease of life. (Emotional) Especial are just the kind of label to jump on such deviant club fare, and on this package "Love Is Enough" gets a variety of remixes that all embrace the groups seedy ambience. Richard Sen brings a muscular thrust to the track, while Khidja takes a more delicate approach. Luke Solomon meanwhile casts his years of experience in oddball house on his steady grooving version, and then Jamie Paton taps into the industrial vein to finish the package off in fine style.

Review: You can't have missed the hype surrounding Stormzy's new full-length - it's one of the most hotly-anticipated albums of the year. The question is: has it delivered on the promise? Yes - and then some. The grime superstar recorded the set on location with an extended group of trusted collaborators - Ms Banks, Sampha, Black Sherif, Debbie, Jacob Collier and NAO included - and the results are more sonically beautiful and soulful than much of his previous output. The distinctive flows are still there, though the subjects covered are often more personal and thoughtful than some may have expected, but Stormzy sings as much as he raps, and the accompany beats - often laden in strings, jazzy guitar flourishes and warming electric piano - are informed as much by R&B and hip-hop as the grizzled, sub-heavy East London vibes of grime.

Sad Acid
Review: The fifth release from Dutch acid junkies 030303 sees the debut of mystery producer Fah, and gets off to a superlative start with "Fine Space" which is a tripped-out electro excursion that uses subtle hints of the 303, whilst melancholic female vocals are taken apart by dripping effects. Fah ups the tempo with "Bonus Orbits" and the results fall somewhere between Legowelt and Aphex Twin on a happy day, whilst "Sixears" demonstrates this unknown quantity's talent for dabbling in smudgey textures. The title track "Galaxy Dust" opens the flip, focusing on a more broken rhythmic approach which allows the space for sharp claps and hi-hats to fire frantically between menacing rave sounds and sci-fi melodies. The tempo shifts again on the final track "Sad Acid" where Fah creates a beautifully slow, chugging groove with hints of hip hop influence that forms the backdrop to a fine arrangement of warm acidic chords and beats.

Review: After what has seemed like a long hiatus, Roger Van Lunteren has returned to the studio. And what a comeback, courtesy of Utrecht's 030303 imprint. First up "Hills I Want You" is a lovely classic house jam that takes you back to the Hacienda in this unashamedly retro homage. More nineties influences come courtesy of "Zeroz On (Forbidden Colours Of edit) and the Underground Resistance tribute "The Broke". Finally "In Sight Out" balances the relentless 303 melody with a smooth deep house beat and soothing Rhodes Piano melody. This is indeed return to form from Van Lunteren.

Review: There's been much debate over the years about the effect of environment on artists, and particularly musicians. Perhaps we're reading too much into Signals on the Double, the first 12" from Norwegian producer Retape, but we can definitely hear the reflected beauty of his home city of Trondheim, a relatively sleeping place built around a wide fjord. There's certainly a picturesque feel to the glistening ambience of "Rotation", the woozy Scandolearic disco of "Moving Down", and the Behaviour-era Pet Shop Boys style melancholy of "Coir". The EP's crowning moments, though, are less obviously influenced by Retape's surroundings. "EMN" is a spiraling chunk of Reflex-style "braindance", while "Signals on the Double" surges from the speakers like the best Detroit techno.

Review: 1 Life returns to its "Keep It Deep" series with another sizzling slab of feel good party wares designed to blow the clouds away. First up, Vincent Inc remixes Julian Sanza's "Starduster" with the slickest kind of '80s funk - like a Level 42 deep cut on steroids. Rune Lindbaek and Frisvold get deep in the mangroves with their swampy version of "Sunset On Punta Paloma" by Incarnations. Cosmic master Danielle Baldelli and Dionigi bring some slick Italo vibes and subtly psychedelic flourishes to their original production "Prepare To Energize", while Jorge Savoretti shakes up Mateo & Matos' "Vibe" and turns it into a snapping, clacking deep house workout par excellence.

And Holy Ghost
Review: The process of a club night turning into a fully fledged label is one that's happened many times before with London crew Night Slugs perhaps the template on how to make the expansion a success. 1-800 Dinosaur sees James Blake and a few friends try to make this transition too, with an irregular anything goes club night spread across London, Paris and Barcelona morphing into a label with Blake himself at the helm for the debut release. Leading proceedings is a dub version of "Voyeur", Blake's most overtly house based production thus far and a highlight of his recent second album Overgrown. This stripped back take sees the spiralling intricacies of his original production come to the fore and it's complemented by the hazy bed of gurgling, foggy textures that is B-Side cut "And Holy Ghost". Given who else is involved in 1-800 Dinosaur it will be intriguing to see where the label goes from here.

Review: James Blake temporarily downs tools as a melancholic sub-pop crooner to pick up close to where he left off with releases on Hemlock and Hessle Audio back in the day. For his own 1800 Dinosaur label he invites Javan St. Prix, aka grime MC Trim, to spit rhymes like "I surf waves most men drown in" over Blake-made digital vibraphone tones and syncopated, computer game basslines. On the flip, Trim, who's appeared on Keysound, Butterz and R&S in the past, dons the gloves for a second round called "Man Like Me", this time produced by Airhead who strips the melodies back for shuddering beats and strange, jingling percussion. Fresh.

Matthew Herbert - "Tax Returns"
Steven Porter - "Fundamental Belief"
Review: This second transmission from Kyoto-based 10 Label proves to be every bit as compelling and finely curated as last year's inaugural release which brought the talents of French sound artist Anne-James Chaton to the attention of the Juno review squad, as well as featuring contributions from Ancient Methods, Sawlin and label heads Steven Porter. The latter pairing of Katsunori Sawa and Yuji Kondo feature once more, here surrounded by a high quality cast of acts in Perc, Matthew Herbert and Dalhous. Unreleased material is the theme of the day on the Replay EP, with Ali Wells in quite straightforward mood on "Overbite" which is characterised by the Chewbacca-esque snarl of static that ripples over an insistent stepping rhythm. The frosted "Subject Of The Stenographic Figure" finds Dalhous in typically poised and atmospheric mood, whilst conversely, Matthew Herbert has put aside his usual socio-political intentions on "Tax Returns" which is the producer at his most floor-friendly and lopsided. Finally, Steven Porter trudge through sludgy sample heavy instrumental hip-hop on "Fundamental Belief".

Review: There are only 250 of these around, so act fast if you want to secure a copy of Maya Lourenco's latest outing as Parallax Deep. It comes on 10YEARS, a label whose last release - way back in 2016 - boasted the Swedish producer's debut track, "Periscope". First up is "Intercept", a slick but robotic tech-house box jam with hypnotic tendencies, before Lourenco treads a deeper, more bass-heavy path on the smooth late night shuffle of "Decending" [sic]. Over on the flipside, old pal Per Hammar delivers a darker, heavier and more muscular "variant" of "Intercept", before our hero rounds things off with the beguiling, Pete Namlook style deep space ambience of "Drifting".

This is without a doubt one the most curious track titles of 2017 thus far and will appeal to fans of the Samuel Andre Madsen sound. On the flip it is over to Fellow swede Maya Lourenco aka Parallax Deep with "Periscope" The artist formerly known as Lumieux and has appeared on Klasse Wrecks and 12-3 and continues on with the underwater aesthetic: diving deeper and employing some rolling lo-end dynamics to impressive effect also.

Review: With a steadily growing discography on his own Seaghdha imprint, Lo Shea kicks off 100 Years with a double-headed beast of heavy weight drum science that does justice to the title of the record with aplomb. Celebratory Sheffield cut "Steel City" bounces on a funky techno premise that swings and jerks just as it pounds down fearsomely hard. There's a plethora of industrial clangs and crashes worked into the addictive groove, all adding to the brilliant intensity of this certified banger. "Prang" takes a more traditional industrial techno approach, working on a staccato framework to deliver a po-faced tapestry of system busting intensity.

Review: Confounding critics (and, to a lesser extent, fans) has long been one of Dexy's calling cards, though even by Kevin Rowland and company's standards The Feminine Divine is a surprising set. The surprise lies not in the fact that it exists at all (Rowland publicly exclaimed that he was "done with music" back in 2016), but the sound of the music on show. Alongside the kind of horn-heavy 1970s soul that delighted fans in their early 80s heyday, The Feminine Divine also includes Serge Gainsbourg-esque spoken word vocals, Prince-inspired electrofunk, slow-motion breakbeats, hands-in-the-air house pianos and nods towards the kaleidoscopic, saucer-eyed rush of Ibiza-inspired Balearica. It's hugely entertaining and, for all the welcome musical surprises, still very much a Dexys album.

classic, with this 'Handsome' tune by the boys as 'Outlander R&S' stabs all over driven phat clean bassline.

Releases on Opal Tapes, Where To Now? and Seagrave complemented by collaborations with M/M, the odd compilation appearance and departing their native Teeside for Salford. Four tracks deep, Big Gete Star finds our fragrant friends Aaron Turner and Tom Brown wholly embracing the demands of the dancefloor be it the tightly-wound "Mirror Shield" and "Destiny Bond" or the dreamier house haze of "Single White Junker." Best of all perhaps is closer "Gown", a low-lit saunter through murky house that could be mistaken for an Actress cut!

Thompson is quoted as saying that his music "has a dual purpose; it has a place on the dance floor, but at the same time it's definitely something that someone could just zone out to" and this is evident on the Green Room EP. It starts out with the soulful and emotive electro of "Redux" followed by the rather "Sueno Latino" sounding title track which soon turns into some early '90s breakbeat driven rave anthem. The retro tributes continue on the flip, with the junglist roller "Juice It" calling to mind early Goldie or Alex Reece.

Retox LP Sampler
Retox LP Sampler (clear vinyl 10")
Cat: 117LP 004S. Rel: 20 Nov 20

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Active (6:50)
Shack (6:05)
Review: Amazingly, despite founding 117 Records in 2013, DJ Trace only now puts out a first solo record on the label. On it, he gets deep into a rolling techstep sound that harks back to a 90s rave but with very modern production. The beats hit hard, the synths drill deep, and the energy is kinetic. These darkened tunes reflect the dystopian and uncertain world in which we live, but at the same time offer a great place of solace from it all. This sampler actually comes ahead of a six track 2x12" gatefold that will be presented on clear vinyl, and is a great taster.

Nightwave (Dream 2 Science remix)
Yo House (Andras Fox remix)
100% Kamelwolle
Review: After several collaborative releases with Melchior Sultana, 12 Records boss Deep88 celebrates reaching the cat no 1210 by opening up some of these productions to some high profile remixes. To call getting a remix from Ben Cenac's Dream 2 Science project a coup is an understatement and anyone who enjoyed his genre defining self-titled release that was reissued by Rush Hour will certainly find much appeal in the New Yorker's sumptuous take on "Nightwave". Rising Australian producer Andras Fox remixes "Yo House" with the results pleasantly quirky and rather woozy, whilst Deep88 and Sultana close out proceedings with a new production in "100% Kamelwolle".

Removing Dust EP
Cat: 12 R04. Rel: 09 Oct 12

Deep House
Grancartridge
The Vibe
100% Kamelhaar
Thor Ens Funk
Like A Trembling H
Review: Deep88 deals in dust; last year saw him Collecting Dust for a debut album on 12 Records and now the Italian producer presents Removing Dust, a five track 12" that precedes his forthcoming second album of the same name later this year. Proceedings commence with the frequency and channel test signature experimenting of "Grancartridge" which would probably sound better within the context of listening to an album than on the floor of a club, though the latter is the perfect environment for "The Vibe". A perfectly judged slice of 90s house nostalgia that rattles along with the kind of panache absent from many other current attempts. On the flip Deep88 goes all dusty on the delightfully loose sounding "100% Kamelhaar", indulges in some Sex Tags style rough drum trax on "Thor Ens Funk" and ends in dreamy fashion with "Like A Trembling H" - see if you can spot the killer sample!

Time Again

Deep House
Olin - "Time Again"
Garrett David - "Simplicity"
Jorge Cerna - "Mist"
Greg K - "Walking On Water"
Review: It's a Chicago-only affair on 12 Stepp this month as four of the label's best go toe to toe in a soundclash that ticks every house box possible. Olin goes for the classic acid technique on "Time Again". So simply but devastatingly effective, he's captured the holy grail of minimal groove technique. David Garrett's "Simplicity" flips the switch with a full bodied swing that doesn't sound too dissimilar to an old DJ Gregory cut. Jorge Cerna's "Mist" takes us much deeper into a cosmic mindset while label boss Greg K takes Chicago's two best attributes - jacking and acid - and entwines the too with a lovely synth-trumpet.

Review: Pinhead Gunpowder are most famous for featuring Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day in a more furious mood than his day job requires, but the band was originally formed by Aaron Cometbus who remained the main songwriter. In 2000 they released a split EP with Dillinger Four, and the three Pinhead Gunpowder tracks from that release now make their mark on this release. Included is the searing 'At Your Funeral', which sounds like classic Armstrong finding artful ways of expressing his hatred for someone in snotty punk style. The B side is made up of live cuts from radio shows, making this a must grab for fans of the band and West Coast punk in general.

Review: Sugimoto pushes his sound even further by bringing the rhythms more to the foreground & taking influences from his previous, more pop-based work, as Filfla. A majority of the work on this CD finds itself working around tight, syncopated micro-rhythms.
