Way Back When (feat Esther Durin - Halogenix remix) (5:07)
Review: Get unstuck with these two delicious refixes from Unglued's debut 2021 album Interplanetary Radio as two of the most highly respected beat carvers apply their scalpels to one of Hospital's most exciting new-generation stars. The ravey 'Total XTC' is perfect fodder for Exit's Fixate as he winds up the 4x4s and laces it with his own special hardcore essence. The super sweet soul of 'Way Back When' is also a perfect fit for its remixer as Halogenix brings a whole new hazy shade to the dreamy vibes. Far out.

The Three Sisters
Vasbacken
Sultan
Brandon Bay - Farewell (Shoreline remix)
Review: Swedish travelling minstrel, Rickard Jäverling, returns to lavish upon us further moments of heartfelt, folk-inspired beauty. Spinning Scandinavian wordless folk-songs seems like second nature for Jäverling, and these tracks show quite perfectly his unique skills. Beginning with 'Three Sisters' (which also featured on his recent 'Two Times Five Lullaby' album) we're off to an explosive start; a 21st century hoedown with eyes fixed on frozen Northern European fields rather than rickety Pennsylvanian barns. With banjo, drums and guitar, Jäverling and his band manage to distil a Tortoise-inspired post-rock intelligence and blend it with the traditional folk sounds that seem to have made their way into the mainstream once more. Side A is rounded off with the shimmering and beautiful 'Västbacken', a hazy instrumental piece of folk poetry bringing to mind bubbling streams and the beauty of a childish midsummer adventure. The EP's defining moment however comes on the flipside with the 7 minute epic 'Sultan'. It's hard to imagine a track more life affirming than this, which takes the Chicago post-rock formula and re-contextualises it for 2006, giving us something both reflective and quietly jubilant. Finishing off the disc are fellow Yesternow artists, Shoreline, who have ushered Jäverling into their ever-growing family and contributed a 'remix' which takes the original track and injects it with a sense of fun and playful abandon. 'The Three Sisters EP' adds yet further weight to the growing Yesternow catalogue, and is more proof of the subtle and measured talents of Rickard Jäverling.

Review: Ride guitarist and songwriter Andy Bell drops this blue-splattered 10" with covers and acoustic versions of tunes that are said to have inspired his last album Flicker, which was released on Sonic Cathedral to great acclaim back in February. It is one of three such EPs and this one features an opening track written by Yoko Ono, a second cut by Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Danny Thompson, Terry Cox and Jacqui McShee, one by Raymond Douglas Davies and a closer by the late, great Arthur Russell. He brings his unique alternative and indie perspective to the originals and they serve as a great backstory and accompanying listen to the aforementioned album.

Review: The Earlies release 'Gone For The Most Part', out on the Names label. It is the final piece of the Five-Part 10" series that completes the vinyl version of the fantastic album 'The Enemy Chorus'. These songs show the band at their most cinematic soaring above the high rise buildings and into the clouds then collapsing into a monster funk jam before descending into the angular dark prog of 'Bad Is As Bad Does'. The band toured throughout Europe in 2007 and played a storming set on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury in June.

Review: So, who is this mysterious Afefe Iku? After absolutely destroying the dancefloors all year long with his infamous bootleg of Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place", which he smartly put out in extremely limited amounts of vinyl around the same time his mentor, Osunlade, featured his cover of that very same song on BBE's "Exit Music: Songs With Radio Heads". In all honesty Afefe remains a mystery even to us. So, let us start by saying who Afefe isn't. Unfortunately, for those who thought he was Osunlade, you are mistaken, but don't feel ashamed, because Afefe creates at Osunlade´s studio in Santorini, which makes sense to pinpoint him as Osunlade. Afefe is a very quiet man. Like our lost brother, J Dilla, Afefe wants his music to do the talking. And this is exactly what we're going to do. "Body Drummin" is exactly what it is. A percussion heavy track strictly for the dancefloor, its organic, yet techy-tinged feel brings such an urgency to move your hips that we would only recommend this for playing after midnight. Of course, if you insist, be our guests.

Lullaby Dub (Sledgehead remix)
Answer (DJ Pinch remix)
Review: Rarely does a set of remixes unite such a disparate set of genres as roots reggae, dubstep, techno and cosmic balearica with such
effortless aplomb as this red hot 10" plate from out of Bristol town. Suitably, it's been burning holes in premier league sound systems
through recent weeks: Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti for instance - as well as providing the climactic moment of Pinch's recent, much
discussed and widely sought after 'dubstep meets techno' mix for the wonderful Mary Anne Hobbes' show on Radio 1. Andy Scholes
of Henry & Louis recorded the original, yearning Tony Tuff vocal to 'Answer' during the mid-nineties at the legendary Channel One,
Kingston Town - one of the holiest of studio spaces in Jamaica. Tuff's pedigree since the early classic African Brothers' sides such
as 'Righteous Kingdom' is beyond question, and here the loops and arcs of his vocal taps into that same spiritual feeling, as he sends
out 'a message to all corners of the earth'. Rob Smith of More Rockers fame stays true to this heritage for his remix, like the long term,
dyed in the wool true roots man he is, underpinning the Prince Far-I echoes of Prince Green's inspirational DJ delivery with considerable
bass pressure. Ras Stryka Dread's mix ascribes a fluid digital reggae low end flow to proceedings which should fairly sing on the more
digitally inclined systems. The flip holds two delicious wild cards - The Cure's 'Lullaby' is yanked out of the doom-laden surroundings of
the classic 'Disintegration' album and injected with some delightful and surprising sunshine vibes, Sledgehead running vocal and dub
remixes which could well become defining sunset records for the summer we're all hoping may well yet arrive. Which leaves a seismic
Pinch remix to completely rush the sound - unpacking the crucial yard credentials atop a skeletal, rigorous stepper - proper uptempo
dancefloor material with a deadliest floor covering bass hum which should only come to true life on the sturdiest, largest systems, it
concludes a totally essential ep in bravura fashion. 'Answer' is out on 2 Kings.

Review: Having dazzled disco lovers via a trio of sold-out 10" singles, the shadowy VEDIT crew delivers their first hand-stamped 12". This time round, the publicity-shy scalpel collective is focused more on left-of-centre synth-pop cuts from the new wave era. Our pick is undoubtedly the epic flipside revision, which takes a particularly wayward and intoxicating mid-'80s cut - think early Chicago house bass, discordant synth horns, experimental dub effects and half-spoken vocals - and turns it into something of an inspired beast. In contrast the two A-side cuts tamper with two slightly better known (though still relatively overlooked) left-of-centre synth-pop gems from 1984 and '85 respectively. They will no doubt get more rotations, but lack the insane thrills of the B-side edit.

Exploring the murky 140 waters between breaks, garage, dubstep and jungle, both cuts gel a whole host of soundsystem genres together with their caustic, barbed wire beats; "The Curse" is a moody halftime grumbler with roots in dub but its heart in jungle while "Backroads" is a rampant roller that's not dissimilar to the early Botchit releases around 20 years ago. Sparse, sci fi and slippery.

Review: Emotional Rescue serve up a balmy curveball cut perfect for the summer months. Glen Ricks "I've Been Waiting For You" was originally released back in 1983 on the highly collectible Seraff label and recently reissued by the label (ERC081). Here, as an accompanying release to that boogie version is a 1990 digital rework for the Xterminator label. With a distinctive swung riddim and smoothly incorporated dubbed out chords, Ricks' vocal channels the most soulful Jamaican deliveries, sealing the deal on this evergreen jam that sounds great in original and version forms. DJ Duckcomb steps up with a tender "Digimix" that retains the dusty crunch of the original with just a little extra bite in the beats.

Review: Taken from Shogun's recent 10 years collection, here we find two of the label's stone cold classics twisted by two of the best remixers possible... Calibre does the honours on Perez's soulful stepper "Forsaken". Adding a seemingly endless roll to the drums and letting Peven Everett's vocal take centre stage, it's - typically - yet another essential Calibre moment. Flip for Calyx & Teebee's update on Spor's still futuristic slammer "Aztec". A gamechanger when it was released in 2009, C&T have paid total respect and added just the right touches to ensure its relevance in the game six years later.

Shimmering, otherworldly analogue adventures (especially the Amazonian flow of "Obscure Funk I") there's a dreamy timelessness about each track of the trilogy. Originally featured on 1978's "Life On The Ceiling" album, the instrumental track melded the British guitarist's distinctive finger picking style with throbbing synthesizer lines and heavy space rock influences. Famously a favourite of Daniele Baldelli, and a long-standing secret weapon of Kosmiche-minded DJs, Chapman's peerless original version is joined here by a brilliant Lexx edit that subtly extends it into a more dancefloor-friendly version, with a longer opening build-up, a tasty drum break in the original, and a deliciously dubbed-out conclusion.

Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

Review: Seb Gainsborough aka VESSEL and Chester Giles are ASDA, a new pseudo-noise and demi-industrial outfit from the UK issued through the emergent Bristol label FuckPunk. The former should need no introduction, while the latter is just now making his debut as vocalist so we're pretty intrigued to hear what he has to say! "Spud-U-Like" is a booming, percussion-driven clusterbomb that sounds like the inside of a tank engine, while "Trash&Ready" takes blatant inspiration from the likes of Throbbing Gristle and the like, boasting Giles' dystopian words, an utterly broken arrangement and a distorted, poisonous bassline. "Bells" is the more abstract, however, where Vessel only inserts subtle flurries of sound among the noir beat poetry of Chester. Gorgeous stuff.

Research confirms that the previous Pressent Sense single landed way back in 2004. For this return to the studio, American jazz vocalist Dean Bowman has joined in the fun. His Gregory Porter style vocals seemingly soar above the band's lilting, emotion-rich jazz on A-side "In The Present", with each musician getting solo space in the track's magical final moments. Turn to the B-side for "The Time", a more up-tempo jazz workout full of alternating horn solos and superb double bass playing by Lappalainen.

Elan - "I Can't Breathe"
Elan - "McGuillicutty Moves"
FaltyDL - "Large Flash"
FaltyDL - "I'm Gonna Show You Somthin"
Review: Fifty Weapons arrive with their latest sonic emissive as the mysterious eLan and FaltyDL each take a side on this classy 10 inch. eLan seems to have been plucked from relative obscurity by Modeselektor (he also featured prominently on last year's Modeselektion Vol 1) but the producer certainly knows how to craft a fine instro hop beat with "I Can't Have" laying down woozed out hypnagogic synths over a bumping beat which dovetails nicely with the more frenetic rhythmic leanings of "McGuillicutty Moves" . Falty ups the pace on the other side with some futurist beat action, as "Large Flash" and "I'm Gonna Show You Somthin" both tweak a 2-step bass heavy flex over stuttering melodic and vocal edits.

Best Friend (Friend version)
Review: The continued contact to the NYC based reggae label Wackies yielded a couple of contracts to singers who have been involved in recordings since the early 80s. Love Joy (one half of the Love Joys duo) shows her undisputable talents by delivering this masterpiece of a song. R&S lays a backing track which pushes the benchmark for the standard higher again.

Deep House
Down Home Kami - Sakunobe
Hobo Train
Review: Adorning ten inches of clear red vinyl, Skylax present the latest in their series of Terre Thaemlitz curated House Explosion releases. Volume 3 sees the house music polemicist present live versions of tracks that were part of Electronics, his 2008 collaboration with conceptual German noise orchestra Zeitkratzer. Recorded in Berlin, Sprinkles drops live acoustic versions of "Down Home Kami - Sakunobe" and "Hobo Train" which stretch the concepts of what passes for deep house brilliantly. This is resolutely not music you'd bang in a warehouse at 2am and is a marked contrast to the deranged Moodymannisns of the recent House Explosion Vol 2 but Sprinkles fans will love this.
