Review: Sangre Joven was originally a side project that was set up to release covers of international disco and funk hits for Discos MAG. The collective was started in Peru in 1974 by sax player Nilo Espinosa who also assembled the Nil's Jazz Ensemble after spending years playing in a jazz quintet in Berlin. 'Zamba Zamba' is a tsingle from 1974 that is a true-to-the-original cover of 'Samba Samba' by Colombian brothers Elkin & Nelson. It brings plenty of exotic sounds with uptempo Latin vibes, elements of descarga and boogaloo and more all served up with a funky rock twist.

Review: Last year, the Expansions label kicked off a wonderfully intriguing 10" series featuring classics from soul music's rich canon complemented by contemporary cover versions and so far it's seen Blue Note troupe Quasimode tee off against Johnny Hammond and Bembe Segue challenge Norman Connors. A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Originally appearing on the 1976 LP See The Light, "Zaius" is a blinding example of why Russ is described a master of the keyboard and it's complemented well by Incognito's B Side cover which appears on vinyl for the first time. Review: BDQ Records is the outlet for jam quintet BunnDebrettQuintet, who emerged out of 90s acid jazz titans Mother Earth. Their sound has refocused on a raw and rasping strain with a live, in-the-room electricity which comes through brilliantly on this new single with Lydia Sharpe. Taking a few cues from a Led Zeppelin classic, Sharpe strikes a fierce, sultry figure on top of the sizzling hot Hammond organ vamps and low slung rhythm section. It sounds dangerous like a niche 50s cut, but there's plenty of meat on the bones of the production, while the familiar vocal hooks will go down a storm with a busy dancefloor.

Review: Curtis Counce's 1957 album You Get More Bounce With Curtis Counce is not only something of a tongue twister but is also classic jazz record that now gets reissued by Acoustic Sounds who continue to celebrate Contemporary Records. It is a fine showcase of Counces's bass playing skills while his sidemen here Jack Shelton on trumpet, Harold Land on tenor sax, Carl Perkins on piano and Frank Butler on drums do not disappoint either. This newly reissued album has been cut from the original tapes and comes on nice heavyweight vinyl with a tip-on jacket making it a real collectors piece.

Review: Athens of The North delivers once again here with another delightful reissue of a soul classic by Bernetia Miller And The Soul Groovers. An original of this Georgian gem is insanely rare and in fact the Athens boss himself has never actually seen a copy. It was recorded in the studio of Phil Walden's studio in Macon, Georgia and Bernetia herself has said it took many takes and plenty of hard work to get the result they wanted. Backing band The Soul Groovers had their own bus on which they toured plenty and this reissue is from the master tapes owned by Bernetia. 'You Can Tell Me Goodbye' has lo-fi drums and raw horns with a yearning vocal while 'I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You' is more slow and steady and emotionally moving with a more tender vocal.

Review: Danish artist Jacob Gurevitsch is a master of the Spanish guitar who has proven that over more than one album on the cult Music For Dreamers label out of Denmark. One of them was Yellow Spaceship which now gets a much deserved reissue on heavyweight vinyl having first landed back in January of 2022. It is a blissed out mix of Balearic and downtempo with the effervescing guitar lens front and centre wheel swooning strings and dusty, slow motion rhythms gently propel it along. Sunny, soulful and heartfelt, this is a real winter warmer.

Review: What drives Amaro Freitas in life is experience. In 2020 the pianist, who hails from the Northeastern Brazilian coastal city of Recife, was drawn to Manaus, located in the Amazon basin, some 4600 kilometers to the west. His experience in that lush wilderness led him into a new realm of musical creation, one rooted in magic and possibility and tempered by a sense of stewardship for the earth's bounties and a connection to the Satere Mawe indigenous community. Crucial to the experience for Freitas was the maintenance of a true exchange of knowledge. According to Freitas, in the resulting album, Y'Y (pronounced: eey-eh, eey-eh), he pays "homage to the forest, especially the Amazon Forest, and the rivers of Northern Brazil: a call to live, feel, respect, and care for nature, recognizing it as our ancestor." This album is an artful conversation between its traditions, rooted in the unique sounds and rituals found in Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous cultures. With Y'Y, Freitas further codifies his fresh, 'decolonized' interpretation of Brazilian jazz, one that may well shatter preconceived notions of what jazz can be.

Review: The Original Jazz Classics Series turns its attention here to the one and only Miles Davis, who worked with his quintet for the boldly titled Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet album. This period back in the mid-50s was a halcyon one for Davis and jazz and for that reason the band is often called one of the best in jazz history. Alongside Davis on his trusty trumpet, John Coltrane was on tenor sax, with piano from Red Garland, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on the sticks. This new version of this classic record has been remastered from original analogue tapes and been pressed to 180g vinyl so its sounds superb.

The American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and band leader very much shows off his improvisational skills on flugelhorn and trumpet while his sidemen Renato Chico on piano, Peter Herbert on bass, Dragan Gajic on drums and Tone Jansa on tenor sax do not disappoint either. This is the first time the album has been reissued since its original release and comes in limited quantities.

Review: While Americans often get much of the credit for pioneering jazz work, there are outliers like Polish jazz trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stanko who also deserve plenty of plaudits.
