Review: Future Jazz Ensemble is a project from Italian producer Nicola Penna, aka Nasty Boy, who has also recorded for Sahko Records and ANMA. Aside from some self-released records, this is the first official offering from the project which offers a noirish sound nodding to nu-jazz in in its subtle assimilation of electronic processes into a jazz context. Skittering drum machine patterns collide with snatches of instrumentation, with noirish Rhodes chords as a common thread binding everything together into a moody, musically dexterous whole. Review: This stunning album from Sarah Brown pays tribute to gospel icon Mahalia Jackson with a series of covers that mark her out as a real talent. The redemption songs truly hit deep and different and the authoritative vocal turns leave you in awe from front to back. The album is a payback for all the inspiration Brown has taken from Jackson's work, and first came to mind when she was singing on the Roxy Music reunion tour all the way back in 2000. Review: Seikatsu K?jy? Iinkai's self titled long player documents the unique moment when the thriving NYC free jazz scene met the equally fertile Japanese free music scene. It was an exciting time in the 70s when a second wave of talented players began to emerge after the red hot 60s sound and brought plenty of fresh thinking to the traditional template. There are just three pieces on this record but they convey the magic of the outfit with the full-range of the keyboard, hitting hard bass keys and dancing rhythms. This reissued version of the record comes with linear notes and rare photographs from actor Alan Cummings.

Review: Rare Groove Spectrum Vol. 2 on Freestyle back in January was a superbly well received collection of reworks and imaginings of soul classics. Now Lance Ferguson follows it up with a tidy 7" that features his take on 'Mango Meat' as well as his unique Latin soul cover of Gladys Knight's classic 'Got Myself a Good Man.' It's a bustling jazz-funk gem with glorious flutes bursting out of the mix and rollin drum rhythms. 'Mango meat' goes a litter deeper with its more rolling drum work and psyched-out guitars and big horns.

Review: Denny Zeitlin is a US jazz maestro perhaps best known for his work on the Invasion Of The Body Snatchers soundtrack. On this release for Now Again, we get treated to an unreleased 1969 LP he recorded with Mel Graves and George Marsh, previously only available as an acetate or limited private pressing. It's a powerful and expansive work with Zeitlin's limber piano playing up front, but reaching across styles in a fusion which gets seriously funky in some places, positively cosmic in others. The title track alone is a 12-minute opus which will take you far and wide, like all the best jazz should.
