Review: .An Italo disco rarity from 1985 now available again via XYZ on a colour 12' maxi single: Karl Olivas' 'Follow Me!!!'. The A-side features the rare original version in all its neon-lit glory, and as a highlight they proudly present two new and exclusive remixes by Flemming Dalum (who hands in a mesmerising slo-mo rendition) and the new dance fantasy continues on the flip with an F. Ricci version (The Ri-Mix).

Review: Mark Tower (real name Marco Silingardi) started DJing in 1973 while in secondary school. In the late '70s, he started his career as a professional DJ, attending various discos in northern Italy between 1982 - 1985 when he quit the DJ scene. He is regarded as a legend for his techniques behind the decks, incorporating reel-to-reel techniques which were quite innovative for the time. His first release 'You Aren't Fall In Love' was released on Discomagic back in 1983, and is reissued here on Felmming Dalum's ZYX Music. The glimmering neon-lit Italo disco of the original comes in both the original vocal and instrumental versions, as well as remixes by Dalum, Longdrink and Victor Ark - the latter's roaring rendition being our pick of the bunch.

Review: ZYX Records Germany gets it just right on this classic Italo disco masterpiece. It's a reissue of the 1982 original that comes with the two still amazing original versions as well as a special pair of bonus version for 2021. The whole package still sounds as ground breaking now as it did back then with its dazzling synths, pixelated leas and robot vocals all over a strident, forward marching beat. Despite the length of the remixes, they hold your attention from the start to the finish and on the dance floor are sure to make for some truly euphoric experiences.

Review: Elevated Senses is the new series from the prolific Berlin-based producer Todo Kunst aka Zug (aka Gruvaldo among many others), this time exploring such concepts with the third eye, premonitions, telepathy and other arcane subjects. On the A-side you've got the deep groove of 'Tercer Ojo' followed by the late night affair of 'Premonition' - both on a housey tip. Over on the flip is the subtle computer funk 'Telepatia' and finally 'Seres De Luz' is a contemplative IDM affair that's perfect for drifting beyond the afterhours.

Review: Human Behind Pluto, johnfaustus and VSO all contuse to this new split red vinyl from Zodiak Communte. Human Behind Pluto goes first with a warp speed, electro-tinged techno track that has a knack-snapping beat and brilliantly mangled acid line. Johnfaustus's 'Red Sonjia' is dark and twisted electro from the underworld and VSO offers two sick jams: 'Sinking' is a bumping and coruscated bit of electro-crunk and 'Complacency' is a dense full flavour cosmic assault with fearless drum programming and plenty of suspenseful synths. This one takes no prisoners and comes with its own unique insert.

Review: Dima Gastroler delivers a potent blend of heavy techno drums and dynamic acid lines here while also expressing his reflections on global imbalances through his music. Mixing up melody, emotion, and ambiguity, Gastroler's sound is a tribute to classic electronic music that melds vintage equipment with contemporary production techniques. With a penchant for experimentation and transcending genre boundaries, Gastroler prioritizes the emotional resonance of his compositions. For him, music is a medium to evoke genuine feelings and emotions, driving his creative process beyond mere sonic exploration. To sum up - emotive techno with vintage vibes.

Review: Only 100 copies of this mystical and deeply moody 12" from Zimp Recordings main man Filthy Rich, meaning you'll have to act fast if you want one. It's well worth picking up though, not least because opener 'The Kraken (Davy Jones Mix)' is a deliciously clandestine chunk of underwater techno full of nightmare-inducing spoken word vocals and creepy electronics. The EP's other significant moment is 'Two Tone Bass', a stomping slab of fuzz-soaked industrial techno that remixer Randolph also turns into a slamming, lo-fi techno assault on the senses. Elsewhere, 'Wiff Waff (Wallpaper Mix)' is a bouncy techno roller that (somewhat hilariously) samples speeches by Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson, and 'Stinky Funk' is a thrusting masterclass in weighty techno-funk.

Review: Filth Rich gets suitably filthy on this fresh outing on Zimp. His Rave EP collides many different influences from techno to electro, acid to rave, and also chucks in some classic samples to really make the tunes pop. The first is a peak-time breakbeat bruiser with slapping hits and yelping vocals, then 'Hippies Gathering' is a prog techno classic from the late 90s Castle Morten rave scene. Randolph offers his own Filthy Rave remix that gets even more wild and included along the way are some sample-tactic snippets to liven up your set no end.

Review: More foreboding electronics from Kareem's Berlin-based label Zhark. This one comes from Belgian artist Derlich titled the Resistance EP, which marks a comeback of sorts as it's his first release in eight years. Features the martial stride of 'Grey Area', the sludgy techno contortionism of 'Rancour', as well as the linear functionalism of 'Ad Nauseum' and 'Fight Response' (BMS Master) which are reminiscent of Regis and Female's industrially minded output in the late '90s. Stylishly sinister. Derlich's passion for art, derelict landscapes and abandoned locations feeds the inspiration to work in this shadowy area of electronic music, as heard on his label Hidden Bones.

Review: Zement welcome back Ole Mic Odd and Alonzo for another punch of high impact tunes aimed squarely at the floor. There is plenty of cosmic urgency to the electro-tech of 'B-A-D' and all its withering sci-fi aesthetics. 'Automate Your Mind' bristles eve more with brilliantly tight drums and hits and mystic pads up above. 'Body Rocking' gets busy with pixelated melodic arps and vocoder vocals with punchy kicks and 'Smoke Break' is a more mindful and slower jam for thoughtful reflection.

Review: Raw Takes offers up exactly that - perfectly imperfect electro jams direct from his machines. We last heard from him here at Juno back in 2020 on a VA via the Sample Delivery label but here he takes charge of all six cuts on this new Zement EP. '901 Area' opens with wobbly sheet metal synths and zippy pads that eventually coalesce around a nice snappy electro breakbeat. 'Sxx' pairs ambient pads with machine gun laser fire and 'JMS' then brings a more deep and reverential viber. The rich variation continues on the flip so that there is everything from tripped-out acid to hard-hitting and ear-drum-shattering electro-tech.

Review: M Parent's penchant for texture is laid bare on this searing and arresting new EP for Zement. It opens with 'Gravel Pit' which sounds like an audio diary from a car-wrecking plant. Twisted metal, fizzing battery acid, and crushed glass all feature over a distorted baseline and broken rhythm. Those same scuzzy sounds define the rest of the EP from the acid-laced 'Ideal Future' to the coruscated funk of 'Acid Thirst' via the caustic intensity of closer Climb These Walls'. An impressively unique offering that very much has its own singularly sound palette.

Fine company indeed, and this promising newcomer more than steps up to the plate with assured, moody and brooding electro gear produced with flair and precision in equal measure. It has always been a reliable outlet for glossy, disco tinged and floor friendly house tunes from some of the genre's most accomplished names. Review: Z Records' ongoing 'Attack The Dancefloor 'series of compilation style vinyl EPs has long been a reliable source of disco-fired excellence, and this 21st edition is another high-quality affair. We're first treated to a superb Jimpster revision of recent Mistura single 'Want Me Back', where Jemini's spoken word vocal, jazzy keys and spacey synth sounds rise above loose-limbed deep house beats and wiggly TB-303 lines, before Birdee drops a genuinely joyous, organic-sounding disco-house take on 1991 classic 'Do What You Feel' (now credited to Joey Montenegro, rather than his now retired Joey Negro alias). Elsewhere, Lee's own rework of Lakeshore Commission's Bluey collaboration 'In The Light' is a smooth, soulful, string-drenched delight and the veteran producer's 'Destination Boogie' tweak of Destiny II's 'Play To Win' is a revivalist '80s electrofunk delight.

Freerange boss and deep house Don Jimspter goes first and brings real sunshine to his take on 'He Is.' Top of the pile is Ron Trent's rework of "Distorting Space Time", which is not only typically warm, woozy and percussion rich, but also makes great use of some decidedly trippy, delay style effects. Review: In its full digital form, Z Records' excellent Life's Better With Disco Comp is an epic 37 tracks deep. Naturally there aren't that many cuts on this sampler 12", but the four on show are undoubtedly amongst the set's many highlights. Boss man Dave Lee kicks things off via a superb classic disco-meets-nu-disco revision of Firefly's 'Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side', before there's a chance to cop an obscure Backroom Productions rework of their early proto-house/garage-house gem (as Ruffneck), 'The Power - The Rhythm'. The mid-'80s fun continues on Larry Levan's vintage remix of Jonny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love' - a killer fusion of dubbed-out synths and drums and Konk style Latin percussion - while Doug Willis' 'Doug's Disco Theme' is a classic disco-house number from Lee under one of his many alternative aliases.

It is another timeless fusion of spaced-out beats, prime 90s tech house and subtle minimalism that is designed for heady DJ sets. 'IV Anbus' is quick and slick, with its bouncing kicks and crunchy hits, then 'Balut' is a much more intriguing atmosphere with spiraling ambient pads and a more skeletal rhythm sinking you into a late-night headspace. Review: Following fine recent outings on Kaoz Theory and Constant Sound, Chris Stussy (real name Niels Steenbergen) brings his trademark brand of tech-house/deep house fusion to popular Parisian imprint yoyaku for the very first time. He starts cheerily and colourfully with 'Fessor of Dabz', a sonically inviting fusion of bouncy synth sounds, vibrant melodies, bubbly bass and snappy drums, before opting for a more turn-of-the-millennium UK tech-house sound (think Circulation and you're close) on 'Questions of Today'. The Dutch producer updates this sound further on the glitchier and slightly funkier 'Neutral Tones', before combining dreamy electronics with rubbery tech-house bass and drums on 'Angel in the Sky'.

Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Review: Sampha is now well established as a solo artist in his own right having first risen up via work with SBTRKT, Kanye West, Drake, Jesse Ware and Frank Ocean, amongst others. The British singer, songwriter and producer has since released a couple of well received albums but before then came his Dual EP back in 2013. It found the South Londoner really establish his own voice on a mix of tunes that were recorded in his own bedroom and showcased his style and intent early on. Snap up this bit of history on exclusive orange vinyl.

TRAP
Review: Just when you think you've heard the last of Covid in music, along comes this Covid 2020 EP from Yotsume Music label head Saki Hiroaki, indicating that it was written during those most weird and dark times, specifically in the city of Kurashiki. 'I Say' (part 2) is a seriously silky deep house with wispy and liquid chords rippling out to an infinite horizon as the persuasive drums get you into the groove. 'Improvisation' is a more crisp tech cut but is still unhurried and detailed with nice deft synth curlicues and the trio of escapist gems is completed with 'TRAP'. This one again sinks you into a pillowy and gentle groove with muted chords drifting up top like clouds.

Unique handmade red paint bicycle wheels patterns on the front record sleeve - Each a unique individual piece, sleeve backside handstamped, vinyl comes as transparent light rose transparent coloured vinyl. Music-wise, both the original version of "Bicycle Love" and the two accompanying remixes from Brad P and Damon Lamar slot neatly into the Yore aesthetic - indeed Vaz is on wonderfully sweet and Detroit influenced form here!

Review: We have absolutely no idea who's behind this hand-stamped 12" - all involved are keeping tight-lipped - but you should certainly give the clips a listen if celebratory disco-house is your thing. It's a brilliantly bumpin' affair that adds a plethora of classic disco vocal samples to a surging disco, bass-heavy disco-house groove rich in savagely edited orchestral sweeps borrowed from another Salsoul-era gem. It's the kind of in-your-face, arms-aloft affair that sounds like it could have been crafted in the halcyon days of disco-house (the 'French Touch' era) in the mid-to-late 1990s. It's available in radio edit and 'club cut' forms, with the latter offering just that little bit more celebratory goodness.

Review: 24 years have now passed since UK hip-hop MC announced his arrival via the self-released 'Premonitions' EP. Almost a quarter of a century since making his debut, his rhymes have lost none of their bite, though by the sounds of Mork Calling Olson - his first full-length since 2017 - he's feeling a lot more world weary than he once was. That much is clear from 'Lonely World', where CW Jones and SINDYSMAN join him for a crackling, blazed, head-nodding trip-hop outing of the sort that was once the preserve of Bristolian superstar Tricky. It's a fairly accurate indicator of what's on offer, namely conscious lyrical social commentary, blazed beats, warming instrumentation, jazzy samples and occasional guest spots. The results are undeniably impressive, making 'Mork Calling Olson' a terrific return to form.

As with previous explorations, the vibes are far-reaching, star-gazing and steeped in jazzy motifs. Review: First popping up on our radar in 2020 - or rather hurling itself onto it with all the subtlety punk can muster - Common Sense gets a reissue and not before time. Outspoken but never outgunned, Swedes Viagra Boys rightly courted some serious praise with 2022's album, Cave World, so it makes sense to revisit this epic EP in a bid to get newcomers acquainted with what came before. Opening on the title number, things may not sound quite as you'd expect. While known for their ability to wield bloody-lipped chargers, 'Common Sense' owes as much to shoegaze and synth rock as it does punk variants, immediately marking the outfit out as something not quite so easy to define. Nevertheless, 'Lick the Bang' is straight up topless sweatbox material, and 'Sentinel Island' centres our brains on wonderfully distorted and frayed riffs. Closing on the slow, nostalgia-hued 'Blue', it's quite the collection.

Review: Acapulco Heat is a new duo from Acapulco made up of Felipe Valenzuela and new comer Ossios. They share a love of colourful shirts and making "sensual moves in the shade of palm trees" and here offer up a set of cuts designed to encourage dancefloor mindfulness. 'Intellectuelle' is a crispy tech house groove with thudding kicks and enough detail to keep the mind as locked as the heels. 'Gonna Do & Do It More Now' is a highlight on the flip - a trippy synth line buzzes about over flappy drum programming that suspends you in the groove. The one and only Titonton Duvante offers a remix that has a darker heart.

Review: .During their live appearances - and especially ones captured for posterity by radio stations - Tool have often delivered surprisingly and unlikely cover versions. These, alongside a smattering of similarly eyebrow-raising duets and demos, form the basis of Absolute Ultra Rare, an unofficial compilation of obscurities that should be essential listening to fans. It sees the alt-metal and progressive metal heroes variously turn their hand to Pink Floyd (a surprisingly jangly take on 'Comfortably Numb'), Rage Against The Machine ('Know Your Enemy'), ska ('Wrong Way'), and Wings ('Silly Love Songs', which is turned into a moody growl). Throw in some heavy takes on their own tunes (see the opening rendition of 'Passenger') and you have a suitably epic collection of rarely heard tracks.

Review: It may have taken a while - his massive debut single 'Hyph Mngo' was released 12 years ago - but Joy Orbison has finally got round to recording his debut album. It's a highly personal affair, peppered with speech snippets from various family members (including his mum, dad, sister, cousins and famous uncle, Ray Keith). It's a narrative device that works well, providing a unifying thread throughout a woozy, musically eclectic concoction that sees the now veteran UK producer give his distinct spin on ambient, slow house, two-step garage, deep house, post-dubstep beats, dubbed-out soundscapes, British bass music, experimental electronica, cutting-edge deep D&B and much more besides. It's perhaps not the all-out assault on the dancefloor some may have expected, but it is a genuinely brilliant and entertaining album.

Review: Given their Radiohead connections Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood make up two thirds of the band), there's always been an enormous amount of interest in The Smile - a lockdown-born project that has plenty of potential. Wall of Eyes, the trio's second album, is certainly impressive. For proof, check the moody, suspenseful and slowly unfurling title track (all pulsing, low-slung semi-acoustic grooves, eyes-closed vocals, dense electronic textures and soundtrack strings), the heady, subtly jazz-flecked wall of sound that is 'Friend of a Friend' (listen out for the music concrete-style sound collage sitting in the background of the White Album era Beatles-esque 'Friend of a Friend'), and the lo-fi, string-laden headiness of the largely beat-free 'Bending Heretic', whose cut-glass horror strings and Nine Inch Nails style guitars are impressively intense at times.

Review: Hungarian-born, Dublin-based Phil Robertson has some pedigree but Arbilla is a new name he's operating under, and indeed there seems to be a slightly more musical, less relentless angle to his once defiantly minimal sound to go with the new moniker too. He provides three of the four tracks here, from the chunky and dramatic 'Stranger Things' and the breezy, spacious 'Fragrance' to the EP's glorious title track, with its Plaid-like syncopation and spiralling melodies. Mysterious techno 'supergroup' from Detroit, Scan 7 remix 'Virtual Reality' and they whip it into thunderclapping Underground Resistance shape. Greatness in evidence whichever way you turn.

This one comes after his various standout tunes from self-released cassettes fusing dusty old Bollywood samples to red hot club bangers. 'Solace' is the opener and is heavy on the rubbing and cavernous bass with icy leads and on the flip is 'On My Mind' which is just as atmospheric.

Review: WSNWG visits the ongoing musical love affair between label head Rodhad and upcoming artist Ignez here. The assured studio wizards serve up some hefty techno that is rooted in rolling, drum-led funk and coloured with some edgy and emotive synth work. These four V'ermillion' tunes were recorded in February 2022 during a marathon week of studio sessions and after this first part there will be a second EP to follow it up later in the year. They are bulky cuts with rumbling low ends and sufficient details up top to keep the mind locked.

Review: Germany's WSNWG offers up the second chapter of its techno story from revered auteurs Ignez and Rodhad. The sound designs in these tracks are next level as the mighty duo waste no time in drawing you deep into their darkened world with 'Verdurous 01 [220207.2]', a streamlined sound but one with punch bottom ends and eerie pads. The tension ramps up with 'Verdurous 02 [221130.1]', a hefty banger laced up with trippy electronics, and then 'Verdurous 03 [220209.2]' is a potent blend of shadowy spoken words and detuned synth madness. 'Verdurous 04 [220208.3]' closes out with loopy drum breaks and wet clasp echoing out into a dystopian world of modular synth magic.

It is the result of some special sessions the two shared when Berlin-based live performer Peryl headed to Rodhad's studio between February and August of 2023. 'Kallait 01' is the opener and is a driving, hard-hitting techno cut with writing synth menace keeping you on edge. 'Kallait 02' is no less high-pressure with its roaming pads and snappy drum and snare combos. On the flpside, there's the dubby, well-swung 'Kallait 03' and more glitchy and percussive darkness of 'Kallait 04' to complete a very handy EP.

Review: Thanks to countless reissues of her impeccable new age ambient masterpiece, 'Through The Looking Glass', many more people are now familiar with the work of Japanese percussionist, producer and composer Midori Takada. Even so, 'Tree of Life' remains one of her lesser-celebrated albums - despite being a genuine masterpiece of minimalism and melodic percussion instrumentation. Here reissued on CD for the first time since the album's initial 1999 release in Japan - and this time with a new audiophile-friendly mix from Takada - the set blends xylophone, marimba, kalimba and other percussion instruments with Japanese style strings, strong melodies and nods towards the American minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

The 12" release of "Eisbaer" has long been a must-have amongst fans of off-kilter, dancefloor-ready new wave, and this replica reissue includes all three tracks featured on that version. Opener "Eisbar" sets the tone, with the bands weary, half spoken/half sung vocals rising above a backing track that's powered forwards by relentless bass guitar, screeching riffs and broken computer style electronics. "Film 2" is a heavy, synthesizer powered workout peppered with delay-laden drum hits and odd noises, while closing cut "Ich Liebe Sie" is a clicking and quietly melodious affair that's almost entirely electronic.

'Not Ok' is effortlessly breezy with LyricL & Andrea Clarke serving up the new school R&B vocals over buttery smooth boogie bass. The Son of Sound remix turns up the tech and speeds the beats for something a little more dancey. Review: This new record from Automatic Tasty finds him move away from his usual pastoral acid sound and into a more DIY, bedroom pop realm with him on the microphone. It's a melancholic work that draws obvious parallels to Hot Chip, but with an extra air of curiosity and naivety. There is a dreamy vibe to the opener then a gentle party feel to 'A Happy Town,' lovely laziness to the bendy synths of 'Wake Up Dead' and more urgent feel to 'These Days'. This is utterly charming music that could have been released 30 years ago, today, or 20 years hence and still sound fresh.
