Review: Another exceptional double album deep dive from Umor Rex mainstays Andreas Gerth and Carl Oesterhelt, respectively one-half of Driftmachine, and the artist who debuted with the landmark 11 Pieces for Synthesizer album. As ever, trying to summon adjectives to correctly describe what's here isn't easy, but let's give it a go anyway. Mysterious, dark, haunting, but also ultimately very beautiful - albeit often in a slightly chilling way - it's highly rhythmic patient stuff. A fitting title, it's hard not to picture tribalism, gatherings, premeditated practices and timeless traditions when becoming absorbed by the hypnotic contents here. It's transportive stuff, both in terms of time and place, era and style, a sense of loops and cycles being the real omnipresent thread here. Earthen ambient, strange factory floor downtempo, cinematic synths and more. The kind of record that's only possible when two people haul themselves up in a remote village with an abundance of instruments and see what happens.

Review: A selection of tracks from the Warchild sessions that didn't make it onto the original album, collected up into this add on LP that originally surfaced on the 40th anniversary CD edition of said 1974 but have never made it to vinyl until now. Usually known for his flute twitterings as much as his vocals, frontman Ian Anderson actually eschewed it in favour of alto sax around this time. "I warbled through a few choruses and riffs with the wretched thing in an album of nice and mostly brief tunes," he says of this sometimes overlooked chapter in Tull's lengthy musical history, "But looking back, the music and performances were no disappointment in hearing it all again - especially in its remixed form - and the fine musicality puts it up in the top few albums of the years with the Martin Barre, John Evan, Barrie Barlow and Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond line-up."

Review: It’s not often you hear titans of the golden era of Blue Note tackling the relative stricture of pop, but that’s what Grant Green did on his 1965 album I Want To Hold Your Hand. As you might well expect, the seminal jazz guitarist lead with a rendition of The Beatles classic, creating a bold abstraction of the original backed up by Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Larry Young on organ and Elvin Jones on drums. Along with the other slightly less familiar songs from the 40s and 50s, Green holds court and channels vocal lyricism into incredibly expressive guitar playing on this standout set from the accomplished peak of his career.

Review: McCoy Tyner looked towards Africa on his stunning 1970 album Extensions, a far-reaching exploration of Black identity that marked the masterful pianist's fifth recording for Blue Note Records. After leaving John Coltrane's band, Tyner had moved from Impulse to Blue Note and made his enduring post-bop classic The Real McCoy in 1967. In the following years Tyner steadily expanded his musical scope: writing for a 9-piece ensemble on Tender Moments; exploring the textures of a piano-vibes led quartet with Bobby Hutcherson on Time for Tyner; and pushing at the boundaries of mainstream jazz on Expansions. Extensions is perhaps most notable for being the only recorded collaboration between Tyner and Alice Coltrane who plays harp on three of the album's four pieces (all composed by Tyner) along with Gary Bartz on alto saxophone, Wayne Shorter on soprano and tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums.

Review: Within a few moments of a famous film score - or at least one that made an impact on you - scenes and even lines not heard in years come flooding back. And the recollections of the atmosphere in the cinema as the opening credits began. When James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic first hit big screens it was a very different time for movies, and theatres, one that seems remarkably simple compared with today's multi-platform, pre-release buy-in chaos. Simply put, the flick was seen by pretty much everyone, which is rarely the case now, and as such the typically emotive soundtrack, particularly the orchestral sections, will have made an impact on everyone of and over a certain age. First returning us to the glamour and wonder of that ill-fated ship, then the drama and desperation that defined its demise, and the death of an all-too-short love, listening now makes it clear how crucial the tunes and songs were. From the unbridled joy of 'An Irish Party in Third Class', to the somber reflection of 'Nearer My God To Thee', it's the stuff of epics.

It features a brilliant mix of gritty instrumental cuts and raw analogue beats with Cincinnati-based DJ Grimez at the centre next to an array of local talents. The personnel changes on every record = "it depends on the sound I'm going for" he says - and here we have everything from golden era hip-hop to floating piano lines, head nodding grooves to more ethereal soundscapes.

Review: Yasushi Ide has a storied career reaching back into the 80s club scene in Japan, and he's worked with many a legend in his time. He originally released 'A Place In The Sun' as a Japan-only track on his 2012 LP Late Night Blues, and now the track has been revived by NYC label Love Injection. The track which led to this release was in fact a limited dubplate mix of 'A Place In The Sun' by Kaoru Inoue, which the Love Injection founders Barbie Bertisch and Paul Raffaele found while on tour in Japan. In this remixed form on the A-side, or the dub version of the original on the flip, it's a resplendent slice of downtempo bathed in exquisite musicianship, not least Nobuyuki Nakajima's gorgeous Rhodes and Jamaican legend Ernest Ranglin's unmistakable guitar lines.

It found him working with his trusty New Power Generation and features the 'damn near 10 min' mix of the song 'Gett Off' which is sure to fire up any dancefloor. Review: Originally formed in Virginia before becoming rooted to the Washington D.C. scene, Dischord Records alumni Scream reformed in 2009 for a few small reunion shows before releasing the Complete Control Sessions EP in 2011; a live collection recorded at Dave Grohl's Studio 606, which then pushed the band to continue on a European tour. Reunions aside, there hasn't been a new release from the band in over 12 years, while it's been three solid decades since their last full-length Fumble. Review: The sixth studio album by British synth pop legends Ultravox landed in 1982, and peaked at an impressive number six in an albums chart that was still highly competitive. By December that year, the record had clocked up more than 100,000 copies, earning a Gold certificate from the BPI, while also ranking in US and German hit lists around the same time. Notable as it saw George Martin (affectionally known to some as The Fifth Beatle) stepping up to the helm, this veteran apparently claimed the band were "the most musical" he'd worked with in years. Agree or not, the record is bold and theatrical, at times taking us out on the town in bleep-happy Sheffield (or some such synth domain), in other moments inviting us to partake in a strange electronic cabaret.

Review: Silence... then a moody guitar melody culminates in a faint whisper: "Sie sind hier...". Vocalist M.'s brief utterance is German (for 'they are here') and of course refers to the Ancient Ones of Lovecraftian lore central to Sulphur Aeon's lyrical, conceptual and visual cosmos. Those 'Sombre Tidings' are yet just a short prelude to the crushing, pitch-black waves that will wash over you once the quintet swings the almost seven minute long 'Hammer From The Howling Void'. Marking their fourth record to date, and first in five years, the opening track to 'Seven Crowns And Seven Seals' is a bold statement defining the group's approach and ambition. Just like Lovecraft invented a whole world of unspeakable creatures and supernatural horrors during the early 20th century, Sulphur Aeon, more than ever, dug deeper into their own artistic range, crafting an album of equal otherworldly beauty and impact.
