Review: Primrose does that most difficult of things on this new EP for the Cead label's last single-digit release: hits a perfect sweet spot between dancefloor damage and nuanced home listening. The punchy and driving 'Los Angeles Wingspan' kicks off and is backlit by a heavenly synth glow that softens the punchy, tightly coiled kicks and sprinkles of fluttering metallic percussion. '1980 Dream' is a more refracted piece where melodic phrases dart about the mix, synths scurrying up the scales, paddy drums unfurl in broken patterns and the whole thing keeps you nice and loose. An Or:la remix of '1980 Dream' rounds out a classy EP.

Review: For their first release of 2024, Chat Noir Tools welcome Levan Grdzelidze, Tbilisi-based artist and founder of the Glispy Records label. After a standout first vinyl release on the Mtkvarze imprint, he delivers his first full-length record here, consisting of five tracks dealing in indubitably spitty deep tech and acid, with the occasional motif from deep house, trance and even downtempo (clock the fantastic closer, 'End? There Is No End', which "breaks" from the structuralism of the 4x4 kick for a rebellious deep-delve into the world of breaks and ambience).

Review: Chateau Chepere's fourth outing is another blissed-out bit of sunrise material that carefully accompanies dancers from a darkened dancefloor out into the light. Zurich's underground mainstay Eli Verveine kicks off with the zoned-out tones and dusty deep house drums of 'Morning Dub' before Andu Simion & Dragos Roban aka Two Metromaniac Guys then comfort with the dubby, lo-fi deep house of 'Execution Error' with its hazy melodies and leggy bass. Review: Chiwax outta Germany is no stranger to digging deep into the back catalogue of the legendary Dance Mania label having done so many times before. They are also more than familiar with the work of one of its mainstays, DJ Milton, having turned up some of his prime material in the shape of the Get The Cash EP all the way back in 2013. Now they look to his All Shit EP with four banging tracks of potent ghetto-house, sleazy vocals often centered around the mistreatment of women and brain-frazzling basslines.

Review: Dana Kelley gets a lot more recognition these days since the excellent Boston Boy retrospective compilations which came out over the past year or so. The late US house heavyweight has a huge legacy behind his various aliases, and now Chiwax are looking at the Beta 12" from 1999. Opening cut 'Left With Nothing' is a powerful dose of deep house with a vocal turn from David Walker, while 'Nastiness' shows how gnarly and experimental Kelley could make his productions when he wanted to. 'Armageddon' is a hot and heavy worked with pumping compression creating the kind of locked in, sweaty atmosphere basement raves are made for.

Review: US house music producer Dana Kelley's 'Beta' was originally released in a 1999 and became a late era tech house classic just ahead of electronic music moving towards big trance and prog sounds. It is an expensive original to find nowadays so this Chiwax reissue is welcome indeed. 'Beta' exudes a hypnotic energy that is driven by pulsating rhythms and intricate layers of synthesizers to make for a fine fusion of techno, house and ambient elements that will still captivate the dancefloor today. 'Left With Nothing' is a deeper opener, then things get more raw on 'Nastiness' and 'Armageddon' is drenched din soulful pad work. 'Got 2 Groove' is a stomping percussive groove with a busy and cosmic lead.

Review: Daniela La Luz is no stranger to Rawax's stable of labels - she's previously released on most of them at different points over the last decade- though Global Transformation marks the first time she's appeared on any of them as Vanilla. The Berlin-based artist sets her stall out with the raw, punchy and occasionally sparkling title track - all woozy keyboard riffs, weighty electro-meets-house beats, tipsy chords and heavy bass - before opting for a deep, druggy, acid-fired and percussively propulsive vibe on 'The Last Window of Time'. Elsewhere, 'Animal Queendom' sees her wrap echoing, dubbed-out and reverb-laden synth riffs around a tough and locked-in beat, while 'All Together' is built around the twin attractions of sturdy, slightly off-kilter machine drums and jazzy electric piano motifs.

Review: One of Detroit's finest, Lauren Flax aligns with the Chiwax label for a debut offering of ultra-rough, juking, retrofuturistic daydreams in four tracks. Like a rose blossoming from a thorny stem, this EP starts out raw and slowly fans out into the subtler tricks of multilayering and accoutrement. 'Jack The Haus' is the tweezy, 16-bit hardware jam; then there's 'The Cheeky Whistle Song', which, compared to the first track, betrays a contrasting taste for cascading arps and subtle melodies in the surround mix. 'D-Troit' returns somewhat to the initial Detroit bounce mood, while Lis Sarroca's remix rounds things off with a softer, out-your-face breaks-house beeper.

Review: Cimedirapax opts to welcome no fewer than four artists to its fourth EP, and they all take one track each. There is plenty going on with MoYA81's 'The Way We Like' from electro crash drums to wonky Italo melodies to withering sci-fi disco effects. Yu's 'Another Call Me Bad' rides on cascading synth arps that never let you settle for a moment and Gianluca Pellerano's 'Alienated Theater' then explores slamming tech house with electro style melodies bringing a cinematic vibe. It very much introduced the genre to the mainstream with its presence in Ibiza and continues to put out plenty of useful 12"s as well as its wide array of compilations. This latest is an eighth edition of the Dots & Pearls collection which tends to more stripped back and underground than some of its other annual round-ups. Review: DJ Tijzza from Berlin overturns his lapels for a look into his latest illicit wares, this time taking the form of a pair of 'Nasty Tools' to top up Mood Waves' Rap Moods series. Said Rap Moods are essentially dirty house cuts interspersed with obscure hip-hop vocal samples; this is indeed a form in which you cannot go wrong. 'Rap House Jam' compels us to depart from the sofa and relocate to the street floor, with a four-bar vox from god knows where furthering our motivations ever-forward; 'Micro Twerker' is bassier and sparser, but brings proper energy when the thematic "shake yo weight" sample is heard.

Review: When not knocking it out of the park with his garage alias Instinct, James Burnham is somehow also managing to find time to revert to his original Burnski moniker and the minimal and tech sounds with which he first made his name. On this latest 12" via his own Constant Sound label, 'Boom' is a rude boy jam for sure - the filthy bass and low-end wobble are accompanied by ragga vocals up top. 'Toxic' is a more straight-up tech pumper with slinky hi-hat designs, smart filters and bass-driven drums. As always with this powerhouse, the subtle production details really elevate this one into a standout cut.

Review: Cough & Laugh might be an odd name for a label, but so too is the music it has thus far put out wonderfully unusual. Kai Kan's opening cut here 'Oversleep' is a glitchy and abstract minimal rhythm with scraping, scratchy sounds and scattered hits over a warped low end, busted bass blasts and plenty of malfunctioning machine sounds. 'Snore' is another freaky late-night sound track for narcotic after-parties that features samples of people snoring. Last of all is 'Dodoitsu,' a more elastic rhythm but one again peppered with paranoid sounds, whispers, hums and distant hits. Inventive stuff.

Review: Cough & Laugh is a rather unusual name for a label and it deals in rather unusual minimal sounds. Following a couple of head-turning first EPs it now offers up this fine various artists release with a trip of tunes from a trip of new talents. Uniix's 'Mindegy' opens up with a glitchy mix of dry hits and sinewy sine waves all peppered with a freaky mix of vocal fragments. Shato's 'Nephilim' then takes a darker turn with ghoulish sounds and synth mutations over an icy beat. Dubfound takes over the flip side with 'Sonya Baskerville', a supple minimal rhythm with well-worked samples smeared into the kinetic mix.

Review: Courtesy of Balance is a stamp of deep house authenticity no matter who is behind the beats. In this case, we have a debut appearance from Cordoba-based Argentinian Castoldi. Review: Cowbeats is back with more fresh future moosic to make you moove. This fourth edition of their self-titled various artists series is another one packed with gems. Kurilo's 'Son Of The Sun' manages to make stuff beats feel funky, while Riku Sugimoto has plenty of snap in his kick and hit combinations throughout 'Coffee On Me.' Review: The superb Craigie Knowles label is often a place to check out some mad fresh electro but for this one, it welcomes Primitive Needs who head off down a progressive techno trip that will remind you of the 90s even if you didn't experience them the first time around. On opener 'Mesomorph' the drum programming is fresh and slick and the synths are searching, as they spray about the mix with a hint of old-school video game charm. 'Rhizome' rides on high-speed tech drums that are coloured by the warped lines and stabs that peel off them constantly. There is a kinetic bounce to 'Hypha Dose' that will make any floor step things up a notch and 'Desert Power' closes with real soulful urgency and hints of trance magic.

Review: Man of many aliases Ron Wells is undoubtedly an under-appreciated British dance music hero - a producer who delivered a string of innovative jungle-techno releases in the early 90s and has been serving up killer cuts in a variety of styles ever since. Here he dons the Jack Smooth alias (a moniker he debuted way back in 1991) for a collaborative four-tracker alongside fellow storied veteran Anthony Wilson AKA Chicago Loop. They begin in sensational fashion via the bleep-sporting analogue acid house of 'Waverider', before opting for warehouse-ready early UK techno sounds on the gnarled and nasty 'Innervision'. 'Blunderbuss' adds warped hardcore rave sounds to a sweat-soaked jackin' house beat, while 'Under The Influence' sounds like a long lost, loved-up tech-house blueprint from 1994. Review: Swiss label Creaked has decided to give over a full 12" to remixes of HRDVISION's 'Captivated Heart' and the results are varied and impressive. It is the cultured electronica of Nathan Fake that kicks things off with some widescreen synth drones, She Spells Doom then brings some twitchy tech house and Shanx goes for something laced with alien effects, gurgling synths and swampy beats. Efemme brings some acid laced minimal funk and Sinistarr brings compelling broken rhythms and icy urban metropolis vibes. HRDVISION himself also steps up with a Hrdvsiovsiivosvsiosvin remix to close out in mad fashion.

Review: The mysterious Creature is back with the seventh release on the blazing hot self-titled label. We have a clue who is behind this label but we aren't 100% sure who is making these impressive slabs of house music. For this edition, 'Singing' cleverly picks out a few lines from Moloko's 'Sing It Back' and turns it into dancefloor devastation. On the second side is the exceptionally dirty and sleezy grinder called 'Freaking'. Both, when used properly, should wreak havoc on the floor and make serious waves in the minimal techno world.

Review: Robert Witschakowski has been a man on an electro mission (as well as many other side mission, to be really quite honest) for as long as we can remember. His furtherment of electro knows no bounds and it has often come in association with Dutch label Clone and its offshoots, though here he has his They Arrive EP reissued by fellow Dutch label Creme Organization. It landed first back in 2011 but has aged like fine wine and sounds as good as ever - there are a mix of creepy and atmospheric pieces, sick dancefloor rhythms and plenty more to enjoy here.

Review: Joren Edwards has slipped onto the minimal tech house radar in the past few years with some choice releases for the likes of Atipic and PIV Limited, and now he's back with this choice drop for Crossed Grooves. 'Exit Strategy' opens the record up with an excellent foray into the fractured beatdown and psychedelic synth sweeps of the minimal breaks scene, while 'For Love' locks into a stripped down shuffle with a strange, dislocated vocal sample. Review: Dennis Cruz is a tune making machine. The Spaniard turns out plenty of house and tech variations on several notable labels and always manages to find a little freshness with each one. Here he is on Damian Lazarus-owned Crosstown Rebels with a couple of solo cuts but also two collaborations. Opener 'Snake Charmer' has a lead flute moody that will do just that over steamy jungle house beats while 'Time Out' is a stripped back house sound deiced by its huge diva vocals. Review: New to Crosstown Rebels' 12"s encampment is producer HoneyLuv, who impresses on her debut release for the Damian Lazarus-run label with the fresh heat that is 'Right Spot'. Corralling remixes from Dennis Ferrer and Byron The Aquarius, HoneyLuv's palette is watery, polyrhythmic, hip-housey and fast-moving, channelling every smart move from transitional 'wubs' to tambaleironautic drum progressions, which back up the beats firmly, and move so fast that they could probably snap an ossified hipbone if played back loud enough. The track's central vocal is also an original vocal, pleading with the listener that they meet HoneyLuv at the correct rendezvous, aka. the 'spot', in order to catch the right rave-wave.
