Review: When Mick Mars stepped back from touring with Motley Crue, it seemed like the end of an era. Really, it was the beginning of a new one. The legendary guitarist, whose riffs, solos and overall devastatingly heavy sound powered the L.A. icons through four decades of world-conquering, multi-platinum sonic mayhem is, as he demonstrates on his debut solo effort, still a serious force to be reckoned with. Only now, listeners are reckoning with more Mars than ever before. On the aptly-titled The Other Side of Mars, fans get that vision in its full, multifarious glory. To be sure, there are plenty of characteristically riff-tastic, tough-as-nails hard-rock anthems, but The Other Side of Mars also shows the 71-year-old guitarist heading into new and uncharted territory, tearing through caustic, modern metal ('Broken On The Inside"', conjuring gothic-tinged soundscapes ('Undone'), digging into anguished, slow-burning power balladry ('Killing Breed"' and unspooling bluesy, cinematic instrumental workouts (the album-closing guitar showcase, 'L.A. Noir'). The music throughout the ten-track collection, meanwhile, is otherwise studded with slide guitars, violins, violas, keyboards, glitchy freak-outs and all manner of sonic surprises.

Review: As we write this The Beatles have just managed to put out their last ever, they say, new single. By harnessing the vast powers of AI and feeding it a dusty old clip of him singing back in the day, they have even managed to recreate the voice of John Lennon. It's a reminder of how ahead of their time the Liverpool band always was, even back in the 1960s. And that's when this album London to Manchester was recorded live on October 13, 1963, which marked the point at which the press knew the band was going to be global superstars and features all their biggest hits from this early-on time.

Review: When most people think of Fleetwood Mac it's post-Rumours, the landmark 1975 album that positioned the group as a soft rock and pop powerhouse. Half a decade earlier, as this collection of live recordings proves, they were turning heads as part of the British blues wave, contemporaries including the Rolling Stones, the Animals, and Eric Clapton. Across 13 incredible tracks, these roots are laid bare in strained, often highly emotional and always impassioned sounds. Three of the songs are collaborations with Duster Bennett, Alexis Korner and Christine Perfect, recorded exclusively for the BBC, while the epic three-headed, or rather three-guitar-ed lineup of the band itself also shows what it's capable of. Add a spellbinding performance of 'Albatross' (which feels like you could almost hear a pin drop) and this is one collection of rarities that lives up to expectations.

Sleepaway Camp: Making The Movie & Reigniting The Campfire by Jeff Hayes

Hardbound book w/signed bookplate by author Jeff Hayes / 6" x 9" / 200 pages
Notes: Hardbound Book w/Signed Bookplate by author Jeff Hayes / 6" x 9" / 200 pages

Both the book and music packaging for the CD and vinyl were designed by Hagcult, who previously worked with 1984 Publishing on Clark Collis' acclaimed You're Got Red on You: How Shaun of the Dead Came to Life, plus on artwork for officially-licensed Halloween and Vampira merchandise. The Sleepaway Camp releases also feature the original hand-drawn one-sheet artwork by David Schleinkofer.

About Jeff Hayes (author): Jeff Hayes is a filmmaker who has made independent short films, documentaries, and even a handful of experimental feature-length films (mostly horror-related, of course). Jeff has run the official site SleepawayCampMovies.com for over two decades and co-produced Robert Hiltzik's Return to Sleepaway Camp. Jeff is also a vocalist and music producer who was lead singer for several bands and released two '80s/'90s-influenced solo albums. He enjoys spending time with his cats Sadie and Dexter (named after another one of his favorite characters) and is a supporter of NeadyCats.org. Married to his lovely wife (and always his co-producer) Cheryl since 2005, the couple reside in picturesque Massachusetts. This is his first book.

Lunar Eclipse (remix)
Review: 1985 Music bossman Alix Perez returns with a 12" so weighty it'll keep you warm all winter. Slipping back into his darker club-focused material, both cuts remind us how heavy Perez can be when he wants to be. 'CRL' is a fantastic example as it takes the classic droning, harmonic bass textures and sends them to the edge of the cosmos while 'Lunar Eclipse' sees him taking on one of last year's biggest tunes (by Visage & Strategy) and giving it a whole new murky set of armour. Take control.

Review: 1985 Music's brilliant 2023 ends with one more fine EP. This one follows on from an outing from the boss man Alix Perez back in November and comes from Cesco. It's a fresh fusion of dubstep, trap and grime with opener 'GITP' riding a lurching beat with filtered vocals bringing some streetwise swagger. 'Overdue' (feat Bidl) has filthy and screwface bass drilling down deep and 'Up The Place' is all about the manic loops and skittish double-time drums. Last but not least is 'Swing King' (feat Hamdi) which is another hot stepping nu-dubstep devastator.

Review: 20/20 Vision and Crazy P continue their long and fruitful relationship with a fourth volume of carefully curated and super-fresh new cuts as part of this fine ongoing series. Scandi-disco don Ray Man opens up with typically lush cosmic melodies and loose-limed nu-disco beats with more than a hint of funk. Tigerbalm then heads into a tropical oasis with 'Cosmic Union' (feat Joy Tyson) which has Afro rhythms and steamy vocals bringing the heat. Ruf Dug shows his multi-genre chops again with 'Vape Quarter Rhythm' which is part proto-house cut and part dreamy Italo bliss out with rave whistles and hands-in-the-air chords. Ibiza's Tuccillo closes out with one of his signature Balearic gems in 'Siroco', which is as breezy and carefree as cocktails by the sea at sundown.

Review: ASHRR, the LA-based band newly signed to 20/20 Vision label bursts onto the scene with 'Fizzy,' The track delivers a twist, featuring three versions, including a dub creation by legendary pioneer Hopeton Brown aka Scientist. Reverb-drenched guitar chords echo over a fat, dubbed-out disco groove in Ralph Lawson's rendition, while Purple Night version adds spine-tingling vocals. On the flip side, Felix Dickinson offers an epic cosmic trip for late-night stargazing.

Review: The sixth edition of the Luther Vine-curated Fragments Of Reality offers up four new workouts bulging with urgency and style. Upfront and upbeat disco house from Rhythms of Prescott opens the collection like a volcanic eruption, 'Three One Two' being the work of Irish-born, London-based Wizkid, definitely a name to watch out for. 'Dress 2 Sweat' by Aguila follows, with 90s-inspired filtered vocal samples gliding on top of a warm, sun-kissed bassline. Flip it over for 'Delayed Fizz' by Douwe and Picasso with its chiselled grooves and urbanesque electro twists, while the brassy, cheeky 'Unintended Consequences' by Tom Frankel completes the set in style.

Review: Los Angeles-based ASHRR are back with a new cut which comes from their forthcoming Sunshine Low album which they have re-interpreted as their ASHRR Soundsystem alter ego, while System Olympia also steps up with a remix on this fine new package from 20/20 Vision. In the hands of the latter, 'What's Been Turning You' is a remix with plenty of hi-fidelity cosmic details over mid-tempo deep nu-disco drums. The version from ASHRR is a chugging and Italo-tinged classic with loose-limbed and jumbled drum funk and plenty of bright, shiny arps. A great collection then.

Less than 10 months have passed since the release of Matt Lord and Dennis 'Dego' McFarland's first collaborative album, but the long-serving duo have already readied album number two. The pair have been working together on-and-off for years and are clearly kindred spirits, at least musically. There's a warmth, looseness and pleasingly effortless feel about much of the material on show, which - like much 2000 Black crew material of recent years - adds luscious synthesizer and electric piano motifs to rubbery bass guitar parts and crunchy beats. It's naturally rooted in broken beat, but rhythmically also pays homage to jazz-funk, hip-hop, Azymuth-esque jazz fusion and boogie. It also includes an excellent, acid-flecked collaboration with mutual friend (and fellow bruk stalwart) Domu.

Review: Lush Life is a seminal recording amongst many from the late great and legendary John Coltrane. It came at a time when his sound was transitioning between styles and after he had overcome his addiction to narcotics. He had first played with the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 before starting his own quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones in 1960 and this one was made from three different recording sessions. Side A is by a trio setup with no piano while the flip is a quintet with Donald Byrd and Red Garland showing their skills. Devoid of the speedy, flashy solo skills he'd been known for in his early career, this is almost ambient, much more about the lush textures and meditational pace than be bop ever was.

PO - "Outro" (4:52)
Art Fact - "The Rain In The South" (PO remix) (4:02)
Review: The mysterious 22recordings are Barcelona's loudest yet coolest answer to the scene's nascent popular demand for dark disco, gothic techno, neo-Italo and EBM; 2023 going into 2024 has witnessed them on a roll, issuing a string of fresh new EPs and singles in quick succession and all on vinyl no less. For the fourth addition to their original EPs series, this jet-set leather-bound inner circle welcome producers AMQN and PO into their coterie, and while we cannot for the life of us discern what these nominal acronyms stand for, we can almost certainly discern from the music on 'Capitulo IV' that said names probably refer to something deeply kinky, sublimated, transgressive. AMQN helms up the A for the hat-trick that is 'Natura', 'Este Mundo Es Loco', and 'SEX', spanning curious light-and-dark vacillations in uncategorisable yet no less propulsive sound - the essence of sadomasochistic switching, bottled in dance music form. PO opts for a different mood, with 'The Story Of Laura And Jim' tonally shifting into paranoiac narrations, gated phasings and dreamatic swells.

LVCA - "Inner Thoughts" (5:52)
Leff - "Revibing" (4:53)
F Phono - "Rocket" (extended) (5:00)
Mama - "Trincia" (5:52)
Review: Four new sinister electro missives from Barcelona's 22recordings, this time welcoming producers LVCA, Leff, F_phono, and Mama to the fore. In keeping with the label's usual V/A palette, the tracks here skew less towards the apocalyptic wasteland and more towards the dimly-lit dungeon, preferring cutoff-filtered spasms and kitsch sqaure-wave buzzes to mechy mayhem. That being said, there are still impressive uses of robotic vocals and cybernetic cacophonies, as on the closer 'Trincia', a reflective sonic hall of mirrors through which first brushes of a future human body can be heard.

Eliaz - "Mind Tricks"
Eliaz - "Wobble Invader"
C.ru.z - "Distance From Earth"
C.ru.z - "Absoluto Control"
C.ru.z - "La Calle De Abajo"
Review: Barcelona's appetite for electro and breakbeat knows no bounds right now, as proven by this knockout record from Eliaz and C.ru.z on the latter's 22Recordings. Eliaz takes up the A-side with 'Mind Tricks', a playfully dark stomper with snarling analogue synth lines aplenty, while 'Wobble Invader' comes on with the cheekiest, nastiest bass money can buy. C.ru.z has a more synthwave-informed style taking hold on 'Distance From Earth', while 'Absoluto Control' brings the sauce with some wild sampling and subtly swinging energy that will get heads turning left, right and centre. 'La Calle De Abajo' finishes the record off with a crafty jacker that proves C.ru.z is on a hot streak right now, and you'd best keep up.

Review: A fresh restock of janky new beat from Barcelona's Juaan, laying down four tracks on the 22Recordings label drawing on adjacent veins of spitty dark disco and raw electro. 'Voluntad 2' brings together both cheesy and sinister vibes, squelching and gated-snaring away into the pitch-dark, while the likes of 'Consecuencia' and 'Mi parnersin' continue this charge but hear things grow weirder and weirder around the edges.

The second release on 3 Mats features a cast of emergent artists dealing in the vibrant seam where electro synthesis and techno focus collide. If you rate labels like Partisan and EYA you'll be into this record, without a doubt. Frankfurt producer Philipp Boss opens up the record with 'Die Schone', a collaboration with Gianluca, while Gabriel Belabbas creates a rolling warm-up delight of electro breaks with an iconic sample on 'Dance With The Speaker'. Muelsa's 'The Future Is A Trap' is a raw, boxy machine workout and Nico Lampariello finishes the record off with an acid laced workout for the darker side of the dance.

Review: 'Made In The Street' is one of those records that's destined to stand the test of time. Brought to you by the 333 Frequency label, the legendary Malaga-based producer Colombo and his incombustible sister-in-arms, Dassier Chams, have released their latest breakbeat masterpiece. Pure, non-stop virtuosity is one way of describing this musical treatise, which condenses the essence of the last 30 years of breakbeat into four outstanding cuts. Throughout, the pair take you through a range of transcendental moments, from mental passages, dancefloor drops and cosmic transitions, to epic pauses and frantic crescendos. There are also countless sensations and narratives that listeners will be able to experience for themselves all faithful to the label's distinctive sound, where outstanding bass and rhythm work plays a fundamental role and is a common denominator throughout its catalogue. Cut by Simon Davey at the Exchange Vinyl (London) and mastered by Colombo himself, the resulting sound is truly mind-blowing. The Andalusian designer Javier Sutil puts the icing on the cake with artwork that will take you back to a time when cassette tapes recorded off the radio were doing the rounds of public parks and street gatherings.

Review: Any serious dancehall head will know that an original copy of this is seriously rare. It originates back in the late 80s and early 90s NYC scene van Cooly aka Koolindian aka Super Cat's cousin Andrew Maragh. It first Cameron his label Mad Indian Records but is now reissued by the excellent Death Is Not The End sub-label 333. 'Freedom' was written while the talented vocalist was in prison and details what he saw as the unfairness of the judicial system back then. Philip Smart is the man who laid down the rhythm that so ably carries the vocals. On the flip is a vision but it's the original that you need in your life.
