Review: NX12X is the first in a new series of experimental records from this label and the artists given the keys for the inaugural release are Goldsmiths student and modular synth maestro Sam Hostettler and electronic innovator La Leif who tackle a pair of tracks each. Hostettler's sounds are the moody, heavy ambient atmospheres of 'Pointalims' and the more light and airy li-fi soundscapes of 'Opalescence.' La Leif offers broken beats with a skeletal feel and a burial-style synth aesthetic on 'Kyoto' and then crunchy breaks and fizzing, distorted synth malfunctions of 'Kimochi.'

Review: Second time around for Jean-Michel Jarre's 2022 album Oxymore, a loving tribute to French composer and 'music concrete' pioneer Pierre Henry. As the title suggests, this version features new remixes of album tracks (all of which feature sounds originally created by Henry) by a disparate group of musical talents. That makes for an interesting mix of interpretations, with armin Van Buuren's sizable trance translation of 'Epica' rubbing shoulders with a trippy, off-kilter electro take on 'Sex In The Machine' by Nina Kraviz, a moody Martin Gore interpretation of 'Brutalism', Irene Dresel's raw techno revision of 'Zeitgeist Botanica', and ambient pioneer Brian Eno putting his spin on 'Epica'.

Review: The moment 'Lip Locked' throws its hulking, lunging, jacking kick drum at you it's pretty clear this understandably rather hyped collaboration between two dons of crossover tones is going to be worth every penny. Then the hypnotic monotoned hook lands, adding a definite air of dance floor cheekiness, and the deal is well and truly sealed. The fact you can flip it to find 'Just Look At The Rain' is really just a bonus, then. But what a bonus it is. A far more staccato, broken affair that takes the tempo up a notch, and uses its breakdowns for purely percussive tension-building purposes, it's a dream of a 'UK club' tune, for want of a better phrase, calling on elements of hardcore breaks, dubstep, and garage-techno to offer something that occupies that all-too-elusive place between seriousness, fun, noise and energy.

Review: Adam Craft is back with a second selection of his Renata Tracks. The first EP in this series came back in 2017 on Arsenik Records but here he lands on Phorma. Things kick off with the cinematic ambient of 'Pace' (Variation) which then becomes a deep and dubby techno roller in original form. Things stay well below the surface with 'Into Dust' which is another fresh dub cut that is rippled with frosty chords. 'I Only Said' is a traintrack groove that locks you into its linear rhythm and keeps you there for a lovely old hypnotic trip.

Review: Cedric Vermue's Perpetua album from this time last year explored neo-classical and ambient with a mix of piano, organ, synthesizer, electronics, woodwinds, horn and even a female choir. Now one of its most standout cuts gets reworked into a more club-ready sound by master sonic craftsmen. Italian deep techno son Donato Dozzy goes first and brings his signature smoothness, supple rhythms and bubbly drum and bass combos for a delightfully heady trip. Then comes a Grand River rework, also of 'Patterns', that is more tense and textural with fizzing drones marbling the rising synth work and suggestive minimal rhythm.

Review: David Spanish wrote this now cult EP back in the mid-nineties. It has been plucked from the annals of time - and out of the hands of the second hand market sharks - for reissue on Distangled, a sub-label of Dutch imprint Frame Of Mind. 'Data Society' is perfectly supple and seductive bleep techno for mind-melting 4am trips and the rest of the superb EP touches on lo-fi dub techno on '3D Bingo', peak time cosmic cruises like 'Child Wave' and bumping party pumpers such as 'Fashion F.' It might be some 30 years old, but it is still as effective as anything new you might hear this month.

Review: As Trule approaches the occasion of its 25th EP, Alpi is given the nod to take care of a sublime new four-tracker. This is an EP of stylish and subversive techno that is meticulously designed and all named after plants. The rhythms are suggestive rather than in your face but never fail to lock you in while you gaze at the fresh synths and unusual sound designs all around. 'Hedera' is first up and floats on air with skittish hits and detuned chords, then 'Oxalis' slows to a crawl that melts the mind. 'Aquilegia' has a sub-aquatic dub techno feel and 'Paeonia' is a double-time stepper.

Review: Fletcher's arrival on Ausblick brings another fine selection of techno sounds that tend towards the more deep, heady and minimal end of the spectrum. 'Blurred Lines' kicks off and is a sublime fusion of rubbery drum loops and shuffling percussive sounds that lock you into a mindful state that's eventually heightened by some dreamy little synth sequences and lovely dry hits. Review: Jason Garcia, A Garcia, and M Kretsch all get the nod on this new 'Family Values EP from the Cryovca label. The techno trip finds some superb common ground in uncommon sounds here with 'Stuck In Purgatory' kicking off in urgent fashion with bumping rubbery drums and eerie pads. 'Iichabod' then slips into deep and rolling dub techno territory and 'Rock The Dance Bah' brings some playful bass guitar loops to a snappy rhythm. 'Stillgar' shows yet another look - gritty, subterranean techno full of suspenseful pads. There is plenty of real innovation across these four fantastic cuts.

Review: Tresor is a titanic techno brand that has very much had a large say in how the genre has sounded over the last few decades. The German club and label now welcomes Parisian artist UFO95 into the fold with his Backward Improvement EP which draws on elements of all the genre's many niches from London to Detroit to Berlin. 'Cogitor' is thumping and wried up with warped lines, 'Sexual Tension' has a more seductive sound with a rubbery and funky bassline and 'Fragment' then brings panel-beating loops for peak time showdowns. There is pure sci-fi atmosphere to the bells and the sonorous synths of 'Solar' and 'Gargk' closes down with a glitchy and ambient-laced breakbeat monster. Great variation makes this a useful EP.

Review: The fledgling Detach label continues to show it means business with a new 12" in a lovely screen-printed sleeve. Romanian artist Dyl is the one in charge and has been serving up consistently excellent and innovative sounds now for serval years. All of these cuts mix up great sound design with languid rhythms - the first is eerie, with watery droplets and glassy tinkles hanging in the air, while 'Glasshouse 2' has a percolating rhythm down low. 'Glasshouse 3' gets a little more dynamic with a shimmering low end and freaky abstract life forms and 'Glasshouse 4' layers in more intense and ever-shifting synth lines while the closer sounds like it's roaming through a deserted factory long after it shut down.

Review: Pampa offshoot Hart & Tief launched earlier in the year, via a split 12" featuring tracks by Soulphiction and Mike Denhert. This time round, fellow German producers DJ Koze and Robag Wruhme are at the controls. Koze kicks things off with "Driven", a clanking, booty-shaking fusion of metallic percussion hits, resonating electronics, dub techno motifs, and minimalist textures. It feels a little like a contemporary Berlin take on early '90s Sheffield "clonk" (think Sweet Exorcist's Clonk's Coming album on Warp), which is no bad thing in our book. Wruhme's "X-mop 198" is a much more straightforward, early morning techno bubbler, albeit with similarly clanking percussion hits amongst the thumping kick drums and restless, one-note riffs.

Review: Carbine's acid laced new school hard techno banger 'See-Saw' has been remixed by a selection of peers into plenty of exciting new realms. First up is the Bad Boy Pete remix with its pumping acid baseline and bubbling synths. Then comes a Bubbless that ups the ante eve more with hard edge, flat footed drums marching onwards in unrelenting fashion. On the flip, Benji brings his 303 for a mad acid laced thrashers and setting down this limited 12" is an OB1 remix to blow the roof right off the club.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Styrax has the rights to a great reissue of some long-lost but enduring classic cuts from Merv here. Written in 1995 and 1998 they are archetypal dub techno rollers that draw as much from the European school of Basic Channel as they do the lo-fi depths of Detroit. 'Dust' opens up with warm and humid chords over elegant and rolling beats that cannot fail to sweep you up, then 'Melted Vein' offers a more driving but no less hypnotic sound, this time with sleek tech pads peeling over the airy hi hats and bouncing kicks to take you up amongst the stars. Review: Charlou is the solo alias of a French producer who here takes charge of the fourth fantastic outing from Flight Mode. Hr opens up in thumping fashion with 'Death Hypnosis' which has synths fired from a gun like laser rays and throwback acid bass. 'Sacrilege' is even more hard-assed with further retro sci-fi signifiers over hulking great kicks. 'Passive Power' brings more teeth-clenching retro-future techno sounds shot through with synth electricity and the EP highlight comes at the last with 'Crashed On The Space Road' setting off at high speed through the stars and never letting up.

Review: Grown-up techno label Kompkat has always served up its most dancefloor ready sounds as part of the Speicher series and it is now up to an impressive 129 installments. This one kicks off with Hunter/Game & U S H N U's collaboration 'Reload' which is an electric cut with bright synth lines shimmering about the mix next to thunderous claps and dark future vocals. On the flip, Bawrut cuts loose with rave stabs over dense percussive grooves with vocal snatches adding to the unsettling and boisterous mood of 'Clapa', which does indeed also have plenty of claps.

Review: An air of mystery surrounds this new While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps project, but what we do know is that they have two superb EPs dropping at the start of 2024. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Review: M Parent's penchant for texture is laid bare on this searing and arresting new EP for Zement. It opens with 'Gravel Pit' which sounds like an audio diary from a car-wrecking plant. Twisted metal, fizzing battery acid, and crushed glass all feature over a distorted baseline and broken rhythm. Those same scuzzy sounds define the rest of the EP from the acid-laced 'Ideal Future' to the coruscated funk of 'Acid Thirst' via the caustic intensity of closer Climb These Walls'. Review: This is techno, but not as we know it from the Vigenere. Sparagamos (a fitting name given the word originally means to render, tear apart, or mangle) is behind these freaky beats but we nothing more about the artist. Suffice it to say they sure do have a fine grip of their studio and can manipulate sound in some thrilling ways. The opener is a warp-speed warehouse banger with distorted bass and manic energy, track two explores sludgy acid techno underworlds and track there is a twitchy cosmic workout with serene pads. 'Track 4' is a world of dystopian robotics while the flip side offers tripped-out, double-time dub techno, more acid intensity and experimental mind melters with exceptional sound design.

Review: The Doo label hasn't been in a rush to relax music but when it comes we have always been all ears. It's once again SNP 500 behind this later batch of fresh beats and as ever they serve as a portal in a sublime techno universe. 'Purt' is the smooth, serene and loopy opener that transports you to a place far away and up amongst the stars. 'Splean Addition' then brings a whip-snapping mix of hits and kicks with lashings of sci-fi synth energy and 'Cord' takes it super deep. The minimal shuffler is warmed through with nice balmy chords and makes for quote the heady 5am trip.

Review: Welcome to Snork Enterprises, a new label from Germany that kicks off with some potent and driving techno on the deeper end of the spectrum. It comes from DISX3, an artist who has been turning out this sort of top tackle for 20 odds years. This one kicks off with 'Infected Frequencies' (part 1) which is bulky, chunky techno with all-consuming low ends and subtle synth details peeling off the groove. Part 2 brings a little more menace in the pads and a rumbling undercarriage, then Mascon remixes the opener into something full of static electricity and unending suspense. Two further remixes tweak the originals to make for an EP packed with heady techno power.

Review: Tokyo-based independent label Infodump follows up its inaugural EP with a new release from owner Takuro Hasumi. 'Ticktack' opens his account with lithe, droning synth lines which are layered up next to organic percussion and dark bass energy that keeps you on edge. 'Wilderness' then flips the script with a much more bright and trippy melodic mix over minimal drums and last of all is 'The Fall'. This one is another intriguing mix of silvery synth shimmers and stripped-back drum programming that locks you in the moment. The fresh EP comes with fresh artwork from Japanese outsider artist Pinksk.

Review: Diosis Decibel roll out another techno D&B fusion affair with the bossman Sam C once again at the controls. 'Under The Radar' sets the scene. A pummelling 165BPM 4x4 / breakbeat swagger, it punches holes in every wall of your house before it even comes out of the sleeve. These vibes persist across the 12" as Sam goes deep on the hypnotic 'Electric Flow' and euphoric on 'Eternal' while Italian-in-Romania Madmatik lays down some psy gold on 'Lacrima'. Exceptional.

Review: This remastered reissue from the Infrastructure NY archives is one that captures the exact start of Function's involvement in the Sandwell District project. It was recorded while he was over in Berlin for a gig and the rest is history. Regis's 'Asbestos' (Sleeparchive remix) is the sort of pulsating, supple, rubbery minimal techno that takes you down a deep dark rabbit hole at 5am and you never want to leave. Re:Group's 'Left' on the flipside is more textured and rides on a broken beat with twitchy synths and dystopian futuristic energy running all through it. Classic techno that still sounds fresh.

Review: The pivotal Lobster Theremin welcomes D.Dan for a new EP that follows on from a fine run of recent form. As always, he serves up thrilling, hard hitting techno that has you clenching both your fists and your teeth as you buckle in for the white knuckle ride. "Switchblade" kicks off with distorted drums and urgent synth stabs that race along at 100 miles an hour. "Mutant Force" is just that with its tortured synths and surging drums, then burn out offers a dystopian take on mind warping Mills-ian techno. There is slightly deeper, warmer stuff on the flipside that carries you to the very fringes of the galaxy.

Review: Greyscale unveils its latest endeavour, the Spectrum Series, as a way to continue to evolve its offerings and this time it is with something that makes a vibrant departure from its traditional black-and-white aesthetic. The inaugural release features the iconic Lithuanian dub track 'Kasdienybes Sventykla' by grad_u & Eazystyle MC as a way of commemorating its 15th anniversary. It came as a double CD in 2011 but now gets a first vinyl pressing on a nice 10" slab of wax. The track itself taps into the earliest roots of dub in the 70s and traces a line through the 80s with its heavyweight drums and endlessly echoing bass topped by great mic work. Review: Shout out to the Palinoia label for here niching up its tenth release, and another stylish and stripped-back techno outing it is too. Feph is handed the controls for this one and 'Kinetics' opens up with the sort of smooth and silky lines and drum rhythms that lock you into a meditative state in an instant. 'Reasons Unknown' follows a similar linear and loopy path but with some brighter daubs of synth colour that pulse up top like distant stars. 'Low Immortals' is a little more dark and moody with fizzing static electricity and underlapping bass, then 'Settlement Research' shuts down with airy broken beats and sci-fi designs that are abstract and charming.

Review: Sawf doesn't strike us as the type of producer who suffers fools gladly. Or indeed at all. The Greek music maker has a reputation for uncompromising and unforgiving electronic beats at the harsher end of the spectrum, one foot in industrial and another in techno, but with enough respect for both genres to make sure he's never made anything that feels as though it's destined for a TikTok video of 5,000 people pretending to find groove in sledgehammers. Kafas is exemplary of this, four tracks that sound as though the machines are rising up but in a way that's infinitely danceable, even if you don't normally gravitate towards dark, single strobe-lit rooms. From 'Bordo''s stepping, broken, minimalist workout, through to the stomp, clang, march and whips of 'Tsirita', this is heavy, heavy stuff but also very good indeed.

Review: Nowhere does techno as proper as Planet Rhythm. This latest 12" is another no-frills banger with rusty synth and menacing drum loops all perfectly intertwined. There is a hurried sense of funk to 'Formation' that really keeps you on edge, while 'Basel' is turbocharged with video-game style synths. 'Romance' gets more edgy and brings some industrial percussion and automation to the beats while 'Here' slips into thumping and loopy house territory of the sort that reminds us of the one and only Floorplan.

Review: Moving Pressure makes its inaugural bow here with a first 12" from Rene Wise. Wise by name, wise by nature it seems, cause this is some seriously fresh techno that looks outside the usual reference points. 'Escaping Siro' is busy, energetic, persuasive in its layering of quickened drums, twisted synths and cosmic atmospheres while 'Caging Green' is stripped back but not minimal - paddy drums and floating synths surge onwards as future tribal percussion peppers the beats. 'Dry Beetle' brings dome depth and dub, with warped synths panning about the mix and the linear beats soon sweeping you up. 'Lonely Singing' shuts down with more deep space eeriness.

Review: This is the fourth and final installment of Sushitech label head Yossi Amoya's reissue series focussing on the work of Eric Spire and his Silver Pearl label. The Los Angeles based producer was on a hot streak back in the late 90s, fomenting a new take on West Coast house music with hard drums and psychedelic synths that lay down something of a blueprint for later tech house a la Craig Richards, Wiggle and co. This useful 12" packs another punch with potent drums and razor sharp percussion across three cuts from some of the Silver Pearl mainstays.

Review: The Det 313 label is kicking off the new year with a bang and dropping a pair of brilliant new EPs on the same day in late January. This one is a reissue of the esteemed Gary Martin's 'Pimping People In High Places' on 10". It's the Woodword Ave alternative mix that kicks off and is a rough and ready percussive techno looper with hefty basslines underlapping and propping up the floor. 'The Medusa Touch' is a more wily and synth laced-late night jaunt with mystic energy and acid details that make it a deep and dramatic cut with real dynamism.

He brings four precision tooled techno weapons aimed squarely at the dancefloor. His Rave EP collides many different influences from techno to electro, acid to rave, and also chucks in some classic samples to really make the tunes pop. The first is a peak-time breakbeat bruiser with slapping hits and yelping vocals, then 'Hippies Gathering' is a prog techno classic from the late 90s Castle Morten rave scene. Review: Make Your Own Meaning continues to convey its unique techno message with a new statement of intent from label head Lurka. The artist has been busy of late and continues to be on a roll with another fascinating four tracker that genuinely serves up some original sounds and rhythms. 'Trip' gets things underway with organic percussive patterns stacked up over drilling bass to make for a prickly groove. 'Airlock' is similar but darker and heavier and 'Sick Flips' keeps the nimble feel going with dancing perc, rigid synths and scratchy sound effects all coalescing over broken drum patterns. Last of all is another dense, busy and multi-layered melange of tiny percussive sounds, synths and clipped rhythms that will make any floor move.

Review: Since the early 90s, Ministry of Sound's yearly Annual compilations have done an excellent job in chronicling crossover dance hits, mainstream dancefloor killers, and popular underground workouts that make their way into the wider public consciousness. This year's edition (confusingly dated 2024, despite being released in late 2023) continues the successful franchise via two unmixed discs of radio-friendly dance favourites. Review: Round Qube Music has tapped up Niki Il B for a new EP that explores a mystic take on cosmic electro. 'Ry01' is all eerie lines and punchy broken beats with supple acid squelch in the middle. 'Waiting' then mixes up more gorging acid with hurried drum loops and slow motion ambient pads that make for a fine vibe before 'Lo Spazio' has a heavier low end. Again this is a limited edition 12" and again it is pure fire. 'rack 1' sounds like techno from a distinctly UK perspective, if you ask us - the bass drills deep, the synths fizz like static and chopped up vocal fragments bring the hype. The rest of the EP is a varied one that takes in clanging loop pieces, industrial tinged workouts like 'Track 3' and futuristic rhythmic explorations such as the tense, textured sounds of 'Track 5'.

Review: Further Sessions continues the good work it has done over the course of its first fourth EPs with a third instalment in its Vivendum series. It is a various artists offering on transparent silver marbled vinyl that opens with some sublimely supple and bass-driven deep techno with meandering leads. Forest On Stasys keeps it deep and dubby on 'Altus' though scatters in some tin pot percussive sounds and Atomic Moog ups the intensity a touch with shapeshifting drones over thudding kicks that are looped to perfection on 'Time Perspective'. A moment of uplift and optimism comes with the heavenly pads and more quick stepping drums of Artjom Schmidt's 'Silver Clouds'. Stylish stuff.

Review: Rotterdam label Planet Rhythm has snapped up some searing tech from relative newcomers Dynamic Forces here. The electrifying duo are one again not mucking about here as they serve up some pumping techno bangers that have a playful heart and plenty of great designs buried deep in their unrelenting grooves. 'New Set Up' for example is backlit by a nice heavenly synth glow and 'Plague' is a real head wrecker with twisted leads and super sized hi hats. 'Tango' is a minimal number that moves like a cat on a hot tin roof and seems to get ever quicker throughout.

Review: Bau Muzik continues to establish itself in the new school techno realm with another backs-to-the-wall banger. Deas is in control for this one and kick off in potent fashion with dense layers of drums and-etc run through with a surging synth pulse that powers things forwards. 'Concentrate' is another cut that quickly establishes itself then rolls on and novels only subtly as it draws you into its mental maze, then things switch up with 'Flow'. It's a more wild and unhinged sound that will have the floor in raptures - if they can keep up - before 'Form' finishes things off with heavy and industrial techno loops.
