Review: Elado Gulab Jamun did a fantastic job with his edit of this Bollywood gem to the extent that it has become a real dancefloor gem that's been much loved all around the world for the last two years. Now it makes its way to a 7" vinyl pressing and is backed with his 4am mix of the same tune. This one is a sublime and dubbed out, acid tinged electronic trip that comes with original CD artwork that pays great tribute to original artist Nadim Khan. Another tasteful outing from Razor-N-Tape for this fresh edit.

Review: Since moving from Europe to Canada last year, Jordan Czamanski AKA Jordan GCZ has been relatively quiet, release wise, with just one solo EP and a collaborative album (Recreational Kraut, with long-time friend and studio buddy David Moufang) appearing. This return to Rawax, then, is a welcome development. Title track 'Polyphonic Glide's is particularly potent, with Czamanski combing tight, impactful drums with deeply spacey pads and chords, jazzy bass and his usual stoned, mind-mangling sound design. Elsewhere, 'Why So Serious' is a bouncy, hypnotic, acid-flecked box jam smothered in ghostly pads and echoing synth solos; 'Sunny Side Up' is snappy, out-there and intergalactic in equal measure; and 'Undercurrent' sits somewhere between Detroit tech-jazz, Reagenz style ambient techno and dubby deep house.

Review: **RAUM REPRESS** Although Ricardo Villalobos has already appeared on Raum Musik under the RiRom moniker together with Roman Flugel, the Baby EP is his first full release for the label. The title track sees a firm kick and wood block snares forming the backbone for a drifting piano chord and sensual vocals which lead to a climax of delightfully glitchy vocoder. On the flip, "hansup" takes on a tougher groove, as sprung bass and minimal house stabs are joined by ethereal chords and twisted vocal samples.

Review: As the Rasta Vibez label nears its 25th release, the eponymous production outfit take care of this new orange 12", and do not muck about. 'So Mi Like Ii' is a barrage of amen breaks and drilling dub bass. It's overlaid with a flurry of extra drums and perc and has rasta vocals lighting it up even further. A real dancefloor filler. On the flip is the sun-kissed sound of 'Messed Up' with its patios vocals, dembow overtones and hard-edge drums eventually turning into another jungle workout. Killer stuff.

Review: Dragutesku's deft take on minimal is a mix of the abstract and the surreal if this EP is much to go on. 'Ecliptic' comes first as a vocal mix and is all backlit synth glows, fizzing synths and distant, heart-aching hooks with thumping drum loops front and centre. It is pure passion but also comes as a dub for more late night sets. On the flip is a Traumer mix that rewires the track into a rickety and loopy rhythm fleshed out with smeared pads and last of all is 'Jazzofil', a more downbeat and experimental cut full of weird and wonderful sound sources.

Review: New York's Colleen Martin aka Lady Starlight brings her distinctive brand of techno to Rant & Rave with this darkly evocative new EP on red marbled vinyl. There is real pace and punch to the drums that underpin the title cut, but it's the distant screams and wails paired with swirling pads and restless bells that really make it come to life. 'Permian-Triassic' is just as intense but inviting with its pinging kicks and rippling synth lines and then as is often the way, things take a freaky turn on the B-side. 'In A Tizzy' has plenty of carries texture and the synths take on a hellish energy, while 'No Expectations' rounds out this full flavour and impactful techno offering with broken beats and industrial grime.

Review: The Ranges label has really found its, yep, range over the course of its first dozen or so relies and this 15th is another gem. It is a return to the imprint for Hydergine who once again draws on a rich vein of dub techno history and reworks it into his own new rhythms and arrangements. The opener is a classically infused sound to get things going and after 'Entangle' there are more broken beat patterns to 'Spectrum' and a pulsing sense of edgy undercurrent to 'Introspection.' 'Perception' is the most sparse of the lot and also gets a Resoe remix that has deft synths darting about the mix.

Review: Ramsel casts it all the way back to 1968 for this new 45rpm. It's a reissue of Wade Flemons, an American soul singer from Kansas who put out only one album but plenty of singles. 'Jeanette' is one of them and is one that fetches almost four figures on the reg whenever it pops up in original format on second hand markets. This faithful reissue is an exact replica of the '68 version and features the up-tempo soul-drenched sounds of 'Jeanette' on one side and 'What A Price To Pay' on the flip, a more slow and heartbroken sound.

Review: Stephen Garfield Townsend is the Ghetto Priest (and also works as Levi Judah and Squiddly) and he is a rather prolific talent who has dropped five albums and some 29 EPs. This one came last year and finally arrives on wax. 'Smile' is a deep dub with endless echo and reverb swirling around the lower end as his vocals bring a smoky soul next to the wispy melodies. The flipside 'Nature Boy' is more light and airy, with sun kissed island feels and another unhurried, storytelling vocal that is delivered with grace and control.

Review: Finnish underground icon Sasu Ripatti returns under his most frequently used pseudonym, Vladislav Delay, for another bout of Dancefloor Classics. The series has already established a loyal following, and the fourth episode is enough to explain why, even if you've not encountered any of the preceding instalments. Music for imagined dancefloors is how the official release information puts it, it quickly becomes clear just how vivid that imagination is. Throwing down a string of footwork inspired cuts, the four tracks here are frantically upbeat and packed with filthy, jacking potential. But they're also deep, at times ghostly - or at least a little eerie - and ground in a desire not just to make people move, but also push sounds forward into new territories. Never an easy line to tread, the overall results hit as hard as the beats themselves.

Review: Legendary reggae vocalist John Holt was such a powerful and potent role on the mic that his 1000 Volts Of Holt album title is a perfect summation of what he brought. It is no wonder then that the Jamaican reggae singer and songwriter can be heard on tons of classic tunes and records across the seventies. For the fascinating Peacemaker, he worked with plenty of talented musicians (Sly and Robbie and Lindel Lewis were amongst them) and recorded across Jamaica and the UK. Review: Anthony Johnson spent lots of time in London despite being from Jamaica and it was during his time in the English capital that he recorded this album, Togetherness, which to this day endures as one of the dynamic dancehall man's best works. It came in 1993 and took in and spat out many of that era's big sounds - pop, ballads and of course dancehall. His singing is superb throughout as you would expect of someone who worked with all the greats, from Lineal Thompson to Lee "Scratch" Perry. Something of a lost gem, this album is now available again courtesy of Radiation Roots.

Review: Quid Pluris is a new label from long-time friends Ricky Montanari and Manuel De Lorenzi. For their first release they have decided to offer up a reissue of the former's Ricky Presents Dandi & Ugo single, 'Beat Conductor' on a fresh slab of wax. The original is a crisp bit of minimal and tech house with tinges of electro and dub and a great vocal. The rigid, slapping grooves make you move while the silky synths keep things on the move. After that Ricky Montanari & Edo LoZio main mix version comes a more paired back Manuel De Lorenzi Beat remix that is just as original and standout.

Review: Short-lived So Cal band Wheezing Maniac will bring back many nostalgic memories for those old enough to have been wooed by seminal skateboarding video H-Street's Hokus Pokus. Two of its most iconic tunes were by this outfit - 'Dollar on a Platter' and 'Don't Come Close' and both showcase their off-kilter invention and high-energy sound perfectly. The band only recorded 17 tunes in all and each one makes it onto this Shade Through the Night Door reissue on Putojefe Records. A fine remastering job brings them up to scratch and makes this an essential one for the collection for fans old and new.

Review: Originally released in 2017, In Riot We Trust is the second of two studio albums so far released by feminist protest group Pussy Riot, whose provocative punk regularly takes potshots at Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his regime. Since 2011, the Moscow band founded by then-22-year-old Nadya Tolokonnikova has had the membership of 11 women, who are arguably most well known for their guerrilla gigs and stunts, often in sites of national, cultural, or religious significance. Despite the real focus of the group being on speaking out against issues such as Russia's ingrained sexism, homophobia, and racism, totalitarian rule and oppression of rights, and the limelight falling on their IRL actions, this is more than enough evidence that their rage and talent can be distilled onto record to some degree. Potent to say the least.

Review: The fast-rising Purveyor Underground Ltd kicks on again here with a sizzling seventh EP that is as rude as they come - in both meanings of the word - from Die Familia. It is his own East Side Gangster remix of 'U Dat Bitch' that kicks off with hard-hitting house kicks and sleazy vocals over a rugged bassline. 'House Music' (part 1 - Late Night edit) is just as raw but more deep and hypnotic with its ascending synth lines and steamy vocal coos. 'Organic (Like Weird)' might be the best of the lot - a quick and urgent house thumper with silky hi-hats and rolling bass getting you up on your toes amidst swirling pads and a melange of vocals.

Review: The Purple Fade crew has assembled another crack team of dub heads for this fresh platter, 'Be Clean.' Fat Frog is the man charged with produciton duties and does a fine job laying down a killer rhythm with two brilliant vocals - the first is Danny Red who implores us all to be clean on the A-side, while on the flip it's Amelia Harmony who sings on 'Reach Out' and does so with a smoky and sultry tone. Both tunes of course come with slower and more spaced out dubs to complete a fine EP.

Review: Where do we start here? The band is called GBH, otherwise known as Charged GBH, the label Puke & Vomit, and the album City Baby Attacked By Rats. Suffice to say, if you're after blissful ambient or contemporary classical best jog on and look elsewhere, because, friend, this ain't that. In comparison, this is breakneck hardcore punk with early heavy metal touches that stops for nobody and nothing. With track names like 'Slut', 'Maniac', 'Sick Boy' and 'War Dogs', you can probably imagine how thick and fast the chords, riffs and drum rolls come, with the raw energy, rage and wit that has always made punk so damned vital here in full effect and more than a hint of early Motorhead to the pacing and lyrical flow, which should tell you everything there is to know.

Review: Shame On Dry Land (Syndabocken) is an award-winning Swedish movie that picked up the Guldbagge prize for best feature film soundtrack in 2024. That soundtrack has been written and produced by sometime Studio Barnhus associate and mythical young artist Baba Stiltz. It arrives on vinyl for the first time here and is a dense affair with plenty of esoteric stylings as you would expect of a man with a famously hard-to-pin-down sound. It goes from heavy and dark to airy and Mediterranean and needs to be heard nice and loud for the best effect.

Review: Sam Gendel and Marcella Cytrynowicz invite you into a lo-fi and imitate world on new album Audiobook. It's an experimental mix of knackered rhythms and damaged tale sounds, distant shakers and shards of melody. Each track is a collage, a loose jumble, a sketch book of ideas that is run through with a sense of hope, despite the often muggy and melancholic overtones. Track five, 'IJ', is a cover of 'Deluge' by Wayne Shorter of the sort you have never heard before and the second half goes a little more unhinged and unusual, but remains a fascinating listen.

Review: Since the unveiling of their decrepit debut EP Granular Transformation at the end of 2020, Californian doom-tinged tech-death brutalists Apparition have become a hushed name and recommended extremity amongst the caverns of audible ugliness. Following on from 2021's insidious and unsettling full-length LP Feel, the band return with Disgraced Emanations From A Tranquil State; a monolithic opus set to eclipse any of the muted hope of their previous material. Dissecting forms of early psychedelic proto-doom, but with the sole intention of re-channelling those fuzzed out sonics into abyssal swathes of complex, heaving dread, this isn't your beer-chugging, whiplash-headbanging gross out death metal (while there's always a place for that). Rather, this is a cosmic realm of Lovecraftian variety, designed to enthral, impress, touch, harrow, and haunt in equal measure. Arriving courtesy of Canadian extreme metal peddlers Profound Lore, no refunds will be offered for those lost to the abyss.

Review: The Final Call finds Adam K.Roll going deep into a world where dub, techno, ambient, electronica, Jamaican dub and summer sounds from tropical islands all coexist. It is a far cry from the minimal remade back in the mid-00s and one that brings a fresh perspective to warm, heady, deep sound worlds. Review: The irrepressible and unmatchable John Coltrane showed once again what a true stylist he was on this Soultrane album. It takes him well away from the ordinary jazz world, much like earlier albums Coltrane and John Coltrane and the Red Garland Trio, with rhythm section men Garland, Paul Chambers and Arthur Taylor proving themselves to be perfectly adept at powering along Trane's innovations. At this point he was already thought of alongside the likes of Sonny Rollins as one of the most influential tenor sax men in the game and that view hasn't changed all these years on.

Review: Steamin' With The Miles Davis Quintet is one of the group's very many superb albums from the mid-50s onwards. Plenty of them have been reissued several times over including this one, but such is their enduring popularity that they always soon disappear from the shelves. The band was at its peak during the halcyon early days of jazz and is often said to be one of the best in jazz history. Alongside Davis on his trusty trumpet, John Coltrane was on tenor sax, with piano from Red Garland, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on the sticks.

Review: American composer Harry James hails from the southside of Chicago and is known for self-recording acoustic piano and percussion using analogue tools and techniques. His latest long player Off The Record is another one made on Tascam 4 Track and is full of warmth and familiar feelings. It is couched in jazz and broken beat stylings but very much colours outside the usual lines in terms of both sound and technique. Review: Florida based Wave Temples returns with a new EP that takes the form of four new and reworked tunes all pressed up to a great little 7". This is deeply absorbing ambient that take sou to new worlds. In the case of the opener it's like being washed up on the shores of some tiny atoll in the Asia-Pacific. This most dreamy and exotic trip contuses through the indigenous rhythms and howling wind sounds of 'Bikini Oracle' and 'Forbidden Ritual (Jungle Desire)' sounds like just that with its mystic melodic magic and homemade percussive sounds.

Review: Portal ends the year with a delightfully well-crafted and deliciously deep techno long player from Acaera. It opens up in dubbed-out and stripped-back fashion with supple rolling rhythms way down below the most deft of pads. 'Anaesthesia' brings some fizzing static electricity to the mix but the mood remains foggy and bleak in beautiful ways then 'Learned Behaviour' brings a little more thump to the low end but the atmosphere remains sparse. 'Forella' is a dub techno cruiser that floats on airy breaks and 'Reorientation' shuts down with three-plus minutes of eerie ambiance.

Review: Hadsel is a first full length record since Beirut dropped their 2019 work Gallipoli. It is the first on Zach Condon's own Pompeii Records label and was recorded on the Norwegian album from which it takes its name. Condon had to cancel a tour in 2019 to focus on getting well after a breakdown and used the process to recover after growing issues around self doubt. The beautiful songs reflect the vulnerability of the artists with gorgeous melodies and layers of subtly rousing chords, supple rhythms and great contrast between light and dark.

Review: Hadsel, Zach Condon AKA Beirut's first album in four years, is named in honour of the place in which much of it was recorded, a remote Norwegian island that the neo-folk artist stayed in back in 2019. The tranquillity of his surroundings, as well as access to limited instruments (a lo-fi drum machine, a church organ, a basic synthesiser and his trusty acoustic guitar, is reflected in the beauty and slow-burn nature of the music on show, which naturally pushes Condon's distinctive, emotionally charged vocals to the fore and tends towards the atmospheric and musically opaque. The results are genuinely beguiling, with our picks of a very strong bunch including 'The Tern', where Condon's voice sails above sustained organ chords, a tribal-tinged rhythm track, and life-affirming vocal harmonies, and the brass-enhanced warmth of 'So Many Plans'.

Review: Nirvana's legacy is one of the most compelling of any 20th Century rock band. Review: Mateo Dufour hails from Argentina and runs a number of his own labels but here finds himself on Politics Of Dancing with an irresistible new hand-stamped white label 12". It's direct to dancefloor business from the off with the bristling drums and perc powering along 'Let Yourself Go' beneath snatched vocal yelps. There is just as much silvery metallic texture on show in 'Power Of Them', a jacked-up house sound with more vocal encouragement and neon melodic phrases panning about the mix. 'Dashed Street' is a third and final steel-plated house cut before cultured Frenchman D'Julz remixes 'Dashed Street' into a smoother tech house cruiser.

'Xtra Tall Tee' has a physical, unrelenting low end with just the right amount of distortion to make it sleazy, and is overlaid with hurried synth sequins that bring neon light and curious energy while some scratchy background vocal and raw as hell snares finish it in perfect style. Review: Swedish band Dina Ogon have become one of the most celebrated groups in their scene. After their well received ;east album 'Oas' they now return with 'Orion', which includes the already well received lead single 'Glitter.' That tune is, say the band, "a journey upwards, forwards and inwards." That message somewhat gets against their previous vibe with has been described as backward-looking and Nordic-nostalgic. Review: So-called 'ethno-industrialists' and Paris-based outliers Vox Populi are next in the spotlight for Platform 23 Records as it continues on its mission to unearth archival treasures both known and unknown. Half Dead Ganga Music is widely thought to be one of the group's most cohesive records as it meanders through lo-fi drones, muggy ambient and voodoo ritualism. Founder Axel Kyrou and partner Mythra who provides the ghostly vocals cook up alluring yet oddball sounds with obscured bass, rich layers of tape processing and weirdly uplifting gloominess. The electrifying duo are one again not mucking about here as they serve up some pumping techno bangers that have a playful heart and plenty of great designs buried deep in their unrelenting grooves. 'New Set Up' for example is backlit by a nice heavenly synth glow and 'Plague' is a real head wrecker with twisted leads and super sized hi hats. 'Tango' is a minimal number that moves like a cat on a hot tin roof and seems to get ever quicker throughout.

Review: Johnstown, Pennsylvania isn't the first town on everyone's lips when it comes to deep dive electronics. But then, sadly, most people still don't seem to have encountered Nondi. Better known to some of those who have as Tatiana Triplin, the US producer and head of the 'net label HRR has developed a cult following for her experimental takes on some already quite leftfield electronic genres: breakcore and footwork, alongside Detroit-hued techno. What's remarkable about all this is the fact she confesses to only really having direct experiences of these genres online, as oppose to amid the sweat and frenzy of the situations they were first intended for. While this might lead some to assuming her work lacks authenticity, nothing could be further from the truth - it's all so authentic because the interpretations are entirely hers.

Review: The Cure are one of those bands everyone should know, and do their best to try and see. With their roots in what was a nascent post punk sound, they quickly - like album two, quickly - turned to a darker, altogether weirder and artsier hybrid New Romantic sound before introducing clear pop sensibilities a little later. You can't help but feel they've carved out a completely unique place for themselves in the pantheons as a result. Of course, that's in retrospect and13 studio albums, 30 singles, and 30million unit sales later. But, as this collection of live recordings for broadcasting icon John Peel's BBC radio shows proves, even in their earliest incarnation there was something very different about Robert Smith and comrades. There's not a lot more that needs to be said, really. Perhaps aside from 'buy it'.

Hector Couto brings the looped up sample bounce to 'Soul Train' while Lauren Lo Sung takes things deep and dreamy without skimping on the bump for 'Free Your Body'. Also watch out for Kellie Allen's 'The Music Box', which has a funk all of its own on a record full of distinctive grooves.

Review: It's been a while since we heard from US outfit Pittsburgh Track Authority. Now a duo made up of Adam Ratana and Preslav Lefterov after Thomas Cox left, they are back with more of their fine analogue machine sounds almost a decade after first emerging. This limited 12" comes on their own self-titled label and features four versions of one new tune featuring the vocal talents of Brandon Markell Holmes. 'Slide' (7am mix) opens up and is a smooth-as-you-like vocal deep house roller that gets a little more raw and funky with the Drum Mix. Shawn Rudiman's remix pairs things back once more and adds some tech drum texture and last of all is the silky Slide Free dub.

Review: Pierre Bastien and Michel Banabila are bonafide musical visionaries who have come totters for the first time on this debut collaborative album, Baba Soiree. They have achieved plenty over their careers in electronic music and draw on all of it here as they fuse their own idiosyncratic styles into something new. The churning and rigid mechanical loops and experimental instrumental setups come from Bastien while the sound designs and superbly chosen and assembled samples come from Banabila. Sitting somewhere between dance floor fun and avant garde invention this is a great piece of sonic alchemy.

Review: It's hard to keep up with the hugely prolific output of UK don Burnski and his several different labels these days but one thing is for sure - Pilot keeps on serving up the goods. For its 15th release, the tech and minimal focussed label welcomes Robin Graham who opens up with the lively and colourful synths of bustling groover 'Check Me Out'. 'Spark Plug' is more business-like - the dry drums and hits overlaid with retro chord stabs that amp up the crowd and 'For You' then gets loose and funky with some twisted and sugar synths over garage-flecked beats and 'What's That' (Refix) offers a jumbled percussive sound full of dynamism.

Review: Jurgen Paape has a brilliantly characterful sound and wrote one of our favourite silly records in 'Ofterschwang' some 13 years ago (go check it out, it's brilliant.) We're glad to hear some new music from the long time Kompakt legend and co-founder and once again it's not what you would expect. 'Allein' is a downbeat piece with oriental melodies and gently plucked strings over warm bass. It's not for the club, that is for sure, but the flip side version 'Allein In Italien' sure is. This one is a chugging and brit Italo disco number with retro 80s synth sounds and plenty of joyous grooves.

Review: Australian alt rockers The Triffids were destined for greater things than their homeland realised at the time. While enjoying some success Down Under between the late-1970s and late-80s, it was in the UK and Scandinavia that they really seemed to resonate. A decade-long love affair defined by some very 1980s singles (in the best possible way - 'Wide Open Road', 'Bury Me Deep In Love'), long before all that they put out Treeless Plain, a record that nodded to their future but was a far more DIY sounding thing. Suffice to say, when it arrived in 1983 the record made an impact, critically if not necessarily in mainstream consciousness. Blending folk with an altogether edgier and artier guitar sound, the songwriting and structure are still commendable. Listening back now, 40 years on, the evidence is clear - here's a band we should always list among the best of Antipodean weird-pop.
