Review: O! Kult was a post-punk and industrial band from Yugoslavia that was active in the 1980s. Like many of their peers at the time, they were censored by the communist party that was in charge but that didn't stop them from making music and gaining a cult following. Their cut 'Zvestoba' has been found in old Radio student archives and brought back to life here and then remixed by modern luminaries Silent Servant, Christian Kroupa (who is one half of Black Dot) and 198319831983. Review: Mple Soul's Fat Jon is back on top form with this new slice of blissed out hip hop. It comes in 7" form on Ample Soul and opens up with the a-side roller 'Your Purpose' which was originally featured on the Samurai Champloo series. It has dreamy chords and gently tumbling drums that are imbued with an enchanting melody line. Flip it over and you will find 'Why We Dream,' a cut with noodling bass and airy broken beats and that is no particular hurry to go anywhere specific. Review: As one of the most cherished of all house tracks ever made, you have to be careful who you ask to remix Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's 'Your Love'. Darius Syrossian recognises this as he offers a contemporary version of the track on this 12", threading a chunky, lightly swung tech house back bone to the track and slipping some breakbeats in underneath those dizzying emotional peaks in the track. Meanwhile Alan Dixon creates a version that holds closer to the original and simply beefs up the drums and threads some fatter synths into the mix. Review: The Essence Of Life is very much listening to the sort of sublime soul music that is always offered up by the Epsilon label if you ask us. This latest limited edition 45rpm features their 'You're An Angel' which is one of the many tunes that made the group such favourites back in the seventies. They formed in Charlotte North Carolina at Johnson C Smith University and are made up of a pair of basketball players who were allegedly overheard singing in the shower and asked if they wanted to form a group. They went on to perform with plenty of stars of the day and as you can hear from this 7" their falsettos are to die for.

Review: 'You Think I'm A Fool' is an original rocksteady heater from back in 1968 by Hemsley Morris. Produced by Clancy Eccles, it has become one of the most sought-after nuggets of its kind in the year since and now for the first time since its original release it is served up next to the instrumental version, 'Heart Beat,' by Ernest Ranglin. The a-side has super lo-fi sounds and muted organ stabs next to noodling bass and ass-wiggling drums, all topped off with an aloof vocal from Morris, while the version is a little more light-footed and airy. Review: Not to be confused with either the album of the same name nor a prior 7" single with different music on it, this limited cut contains four outtakes and demos recorded by T. Rex's Marc Bolan in 1966. Later in 1981, backing instrumentals were recorded and added to Bolan's vocals, under the watchful eye of his trusted former manager Simon Napier-Bell. From 'Mustang Ford' to the later hit 'The Perfurmed Garden...', Bolan sounds all but overdubbed here; he is at one with each rollicking, slick backing, freewheeling and near yelling on this rock altarpiece.

Review: Howard Lemon Singers was an incredible group back in the 70s. They released a very rare and much sought-after album Seasons released on the legendary TK Records subsidiary Gospel Roots back in '77 and this 7" offers up two of the best tracks from it. Both tracks bring good vibes and positive sentiments with real harmony found between secular and spiritual sounds. The group managed to modernize the gospel sound as they went with 'You Are Somebody' being a modern soul heater that will have heart, body and mind in a spin. Review: Following the release of the (rather good) multi-artist EP, Balance, Satya is back to serving up solo showcases - in this case a third label outing from sometime All Day I Dream contributor YokoO. He begins in typically warm and woozy fashion, wrapping rising and falling analogue synth sounds, cut-up vocal snippets and tech-tinged electronics around a deep-tech groove ('When I Wait Next To You'), before reaching for more minimalistic beats, trippy noises and wobbly, UKG style sub-bass on 'I Look at You'. 'I Want More of You', which boasts selected vocal snippets from a late-80s classic, is pleasingly dubby, dreamy and ultra-deep - the EP's most potent moment in our book. Review: The aural aesthetics of Flying Lotus go hand-in-hand with film scores. There was the original music contributed to the Blade Runner 2049 anime prequel, tunes for Carole & Tuesday, and the small matter of his label Brainfeeder's new film division. Now we have Yasuke, his first full score.
If you're unaware, Yasuke is the Japanese animated series that's been a hit among fans of Far Eastern cartoons since arriving on Netflix. So far so factual, what about the actual tracks themselves? Well, this collection of arrangements is at once very FlyLo, and then not that FlyLo at all. Yes, there's plenty of deep genre diving going on, nodding to freewheeling jazz, prog rock, trap and more. But here it's much more minimalistic than many might be used to - resulting in a thoroughly original approach to soundtracking a samurai story, void of stereotypes, while never fully breaking from tradition.

Review: Opolopo is a machine when it comes to serving up superb disco, funk and soul sounds. He's done so for two decades on plenty of top labels from Toolroom to Version Galore to Gamm. Review: Yuki "Monolog" Kanesaka is a soul, jazz and r&b producer who is based between Boston and Tokyo, and Yuki "T-Groove" Takahashi is widely regarded as one of Japan's best remixes. Together they are Golden Bridge and they make timeless soul sounds steeped in magical musicianship and lush production. Elements of greats like Herbie Hancock and the Mizell Brothers loom large over these tunes which come from their eponymous 2019 album. 'Wouldn't Be The Same' opens in funky and stepping soul style with neat bass riffs. This is the kind of stuff that lovers of Mindshake and Rawthentic will be all over. First up "Mind Blank" brings the tough yet sultry attitude that you could imagine playing peak time at Amnesia. "Works On Sunday" takes the tempo down a notch or two for something more suited to the afterhours, but just as sexy. Review: Floridian musician Tedi Robinson specialises in what he calls "mellowfunkism" - a smooth, colourful, Prince-influenced take on retro-futurist soul that various draws inspiration from jazz-funk, '80s groove, contemporary R&B and P-funk. It's this attractive, effortlessly soulful trademark sound that's showcased on Robinson's second Six Nine Music "45" as Son of Pearl. Robinson's dazzling bass and smooth vocals take pride of place on A-side 'Wonderful', alongside head-nodding, hip-hop style beats, glistening guitars and twinkling electric piano sounds. Over on the reverse, 'The Other Side of Nowhere' boasts all manner of kaleidoscopic, P-funk-influenced synth sounds, crunchy R&B drums and more elastic bass courtesy of Robinson, whose vocals are once again superb.

Review: Kareem Lotfy and Heith are back with their Ghost Lemurs project, and arguably their most conceptual and captivating record to date. Describing Wombs & Spirit Aliens as "a type of folk music devoid of a specific homeland, but resulting from the authors' heritages, simultaneously divided and united by the Mediterranean Sea", it feels like stepping out of our traditional timeline and into another dimension. Unarguably psychedelic - you can almost hear the shooting stars wisp by core arrangements as you desperately try and stargaze in the mind's eye - it's also unarguably earthly. Polyrhythms and melodic motifs seem to be taken straight from the ceremonial practices of long lost communities and tribes. Those who built their civilisations around a connection with the terrestrial and extraterrestrial, something most of us can only really hope to imagine in 2024.

Review: Some of Europe's finest purveyors of underground sounds come together on this fourth rase from the One Eye Witness label out of the Netherlands. Asphalt DJ kicks off and lays out a steamroller of a techno banger in 'Blades' which is pulsing, hard hitting but supple. RDS gets for a much more minimal and cosmic vibe on the tight and bouncy 'TH Only' then Ste Roberts brings some machismo and texture to 'Tune Pitch Decay' with its industrial tech aesthetic. Tammo Hesselink closes down the EP with the loose and bendy tones, scattered hits and late night minimal eeriness of 'Untitled 42.'

Review: Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has continually spread its wings since conception in 2005. Championed by fans of techno, dubstep, experimental and drum & bass alike, his latest EP for Honest Jons (and rumoured to be his last under this monkier) showcases the amalgamation of styles and sounds that has earnt the German such a far reaching fanbase.
If it does prove to be the final T++ release ever, then the alias will have left us with the most expressive and energetic of his works. Adding a real sense of personality, Profrock unearthed a handful of samples of the singer and ndingidi player Ssekinomu, recorded in East Africa in the 1930s and 40s in the label’s vaults for this release. Skilfully, the producer works these snippets into the complex rhythm structures, giving his music a human touch that has never been seen before. Profrock looks to the radical fringe of UK garage for the snapping 2 step vibe in these rhythms that remain central to all four tracks on the EP. This results in a clutch of tracks that take on an immensely tribal and subconsciously innate feel. They morph new structures from the forms of 2 step, techno and drum & bass around which Profrock wraps twisted FX and weighty sub bass to create one whole, throbbing organism.
So with quite possibly his final release, T++ leaves us, rather fittingly, with a record that sounds at once both ancient and modern. It has a totally unique tone, like a form of tribal language that can only speak to and be understood by today’s culture through these sub-heavy, atmospheric sounds.

Review: XAO is back on his long-term label Canvas with another scintillating new album, Wirehead. It is his second following the head tuning 2019 debut Eternal Care Unit and it comes with liquid metal surfaces, chrome sheen and wispy sound design that is utterly futuristic. Though very much a clean digital album laden with video game FX and contemporary sound design, there is warmth and humanity in these tracks. Delayed percussion, guitar fuzz, celestial chords and rich, hearty bass all make it so as techno, IDM and electro are all fused together.

Review: The fourth LP outing from the Nottingham band sees revelling in 60s psychedelia and folk sounds, checking in somewhere between the whimsical glories of The Left Banke, the powering grooves of The Doors and the beguiling melodicism of Nick Drake. It's a nostalgic sound but it's not lacking in dynamics, especially when driven along by the glittering, sparkling drums of founding member Adam Carr, which often feel like the lead instrument as the vocals of Leonore Wheatley and the guitar, bass and keyboards mesh into a hazy supporting act.

Review: Frank Staniek has previous form in the minimal tech house scene as Frank Sonic, recording for the likes of Trapez and My Best Friend. Now he's helping shape out the sound of new San Jose label Wild Palms Trax by laying down the second release under a new alias, Link Gaetz. This is minimal delivered with a crisp focus, from the deliciously pointed 'El Camino' to the deep-diving 'Floripa'. The rhythm section is precision tooled and the atmospherics walk the line between escapism and restraint with ease. 'Cactaceae' is a freakier offering on the flip, but it's still looped up for a direct hit, while 'Into The Redwoods' plays around with vocal hooks and synth riffs for something more like an end-of-set knees up, minimal style.
