Review: Where he once mused on love and longing, Norwegian experimental pop and electronica artist Gundelach spends much of "My Frail Body" delivering music (and in some cases lyrics/vocals) inspired by the recent birth of his first child. While his music always feels thoughtful, mellow and glacial, there's certainly many more joyous melodies and positive synth sounds to be found across the album, which also utilizes field recordings, quirky electronic beats, occasional nods towards more up-tempo styles (early Biosphere style deep techno and drum & bass in particular) and copious amounts of both reverb and delay. The resultant set is as impressive and enjoyable as anything the Oslo-based artist has released to date.

Review: James Ruskin and Mark Broom return with a third installment of their wayward electronica project, The Fear Ratio. Far from the bruising techno they normally throw down, "They Can't Be Saved" is an introspective trip into the knotted realms of hip-hop influenced machine music produced down to the nth degree. The beats crunch hard and the atmospheres come shrouded in mystery, slotting in perfectly on the legendary Manchester label Skam. Both a wonderful revival of leftfield electronica and a vital, fresh approach, this third album is another triumphant one. Slap this one on and revel in the sound of two hugely accomplished producers cutting loose and having fun in the studio.

Review: Third time around for Beverly Glenn-Copeland's superb 1986 LP Keyboard Fantasies, which Invisible City Editions reissued last year. Since copies of that pressing are hard to come back, this fresh reissue should be welcomed. Musically, it's something of a killer curio: a set that sees Copeland adding weary, folksy vocals to melodious, synthesizer-based backing tracks. Stylistically it's a little more diverse than that, sitting somewhere between art-rock, lo-fi synth-soul, '80s synth-wave and new age ambience. The looseness of the instrumentation and production is particularly alluring, as is the "home-made" feel of Glenn-Copeland's heart-aching songs.

Review: Micha Jacaszek's music has always been filmic to varying degrees, but it's only in the last decade that filmmakers have commissioned him to write, record and produce music for their big and small screen projects. His latest album, "Music For Films", riffs on this; while some of it was indeed created with specific cinematic projects in mind, some of it wasn't. Listening through from start to finish, where it comes on like a genuine soundtrack to a melancholic, noir-ish film, it's hard to spot the difference. Combining neo-classical string sounds with field recordings, electro-acoustic textures, ambient style chords and melodies, and nods to music concrete, it's an evocative musical journey that stirs the senses and toys with your emotions. In a word: stunning.

Review: Emotional Response bring you some truly healing sounds from Polish producer Bartosz Kruczynski, who first teamed up with the label as The Phantom for the first round of the Schleissen series back in 2015. He's since delivered a debut album to Growing Bin and released as Earth Trax on Rhythm Section and others. The mood across this collection of pieces produced for Polish studio TVP Culture opens up a rich seam of inspiration around the ambient end of Kruczynski's work through short pieces rich in sonorous delights. From fluttering fourth world-isms to hazy dub soundscapes, this is pure listening pleasure from start to finish.

Review: After the expansive run of eXquisite CORpsE EPs on Platform 23 last year, Robbert Heijnen and Debbie Jones' project gets another fresh airing under the XqST guise. The seductive rhythmic incantations gathered on this release were largely recorded in 2003 in Vancouver, once the couple's children were in bed. Quite what the junior XqSTers would have made of the transcendental drum loops emanating from their parents' studio is anyone's guess, but the quality is remarkable. Dense and foggy in atmosphere, but with a sharply defined percussive angle at every cycle of every loop, this is another wonderful document of the often overlooked work of this singular pair of drum obsessives.

Review: Following on from the excellent "Scene In Mirage" reissue that broke O Yuki Conjugate to a whole new crowd, Emotional Rescue return to the archives of the over-looked Nottingham "dirty ambient" outfit. Their second LP "Into Dark Water", originally released in 1987, is just as powerful as the first - a hypnagogic journey fuelled by a global stew of sound, feeding into elegant, evocative pieces. Fans of classic Jon Hassell will find much to enjoy here, but equally those appreciating the exotic post punk undercurrents of 23 Skidoo et al will easily find themselves drawn to the likes of "Ba-makala". Stunning, borderless musings from a hidden treasure of the UK's post-industrial heritage.

Review: Talk about calling a spade a spade. Bongo Joe have opted for a Ronseal approach to album titles with this compilation. If that reference means nothing let's just say it does exactly what it says on the tin. Various iterations of electronica, sometimes dark, in other moments really rather delightful, it's a vast - or at least 17 tracks - showcase of varied talent. 'Etudes' by Claudine Chirac could almost be part of a 1990s video game score (we're thinking more 'Final Fantasy' than 'Tekken'). Pete Philippe Weiss' 'Subway' punches with the unapologetic positivity of 1980s power pop. Opening number 'Untitled', by Andreas Hofer, is an uneasy, brooding mood setter that comes complete with reversed out vocals. D-Sire's 'Wintertime' is a slice of synth-y stepping stuff John Carpenter would be proud of (instrumentally at least). So much worth mentioning - such as stripped electro cut 'Rap Yourself' by Air Project - it's impossible not to find something to feel passionate about.

Review: Under the SolarX alias, Roman Belavkin was one of the leading lights of the Russian IDM scene in the mid-to-late '90s, though very few copies of his cassette and CD releases ever made it in to record stores outside the former Soviet Union. Furthermore, this is the first ever reissue of Belavkin's 1997 sophomore set, "X-Rated", an album that remains a firm favourite in the Russian electronic underground. There's much to admire throughout, with Belavkin effortlessly joining the dots between the skittish, angular rhythms of Autechre, Rephlex-esque "Braindance", Aphex Twin style ambient, early Squarepusher-esque "drill and bass" business and hypnotic ambient techno.

Review: Long time techno tastemakers Plaid were one of the many cult and innovative acts to record a seminal Peel Session with the late BBC maestro. Now they're all being pressed to vinyl as part of an on-going series by Warp, and this collection from the always out there Ed Hanley and Andy Turner is another essential one. Their pair's love of warped synths, unsettling atmospheres and the fusion of electronic, acoustic and organic textures still sounds like it's come back from the future all the years later. "Kiterider" is particularly brain melting, but each of these tracks explores a weirdly naive and innocent sound.

Review: UK-Polish duo Holden & Zimpel return with more adventures in Kraut-jazz-techno, if that's even a thing. The description certainly makes sense on 'Saturday', which opens the scoring here on a tip that is at once informed by Underground Resistance, drone-y avant-garde and something with flutes. Starting as it means to go on, to say the least. From there we run through days of the week in order to 'Wednesday', making this one of the longest weekends we can think of in some time. 'Sunday''s distorted strings sounding almost like a strange species communicating via fraught noises. 'Tuesday' is more rhythmically balanced, almost risking coming close to more standard electronica as its melodies reach ever higher, before the final number closes out with an air of euphoria and subtle drive.

Review: Relentlessly prolific Boris Bunnik brings his electro-focused Versalife alias to 20/20 Vision, a label which has been excelling at a renewed focus on the sounds of electro in recent years. The 808 beats are crisp and snapping, like they should in proper electro, but the synths shape out the atmosphere in brooding, dystopian strokes shot through with a certain mournful quality. It makes for engrossing, emotionally charged material perfect for the dancefloor as much as headphone reveries - just flip to the gorgeous "Aegis" and feel yourself drift away to somewhere mystical in the far reaches of the future.

Review: Although best known for the quality of their reissues, the Rain & Shine Records crew does put out stunningly good new music now and then. This is one of those occasions. "The Watcher" is the debut EP from 21 year-old New Zealander Arjuna Oakes, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and vocalist who's happy to forge his own path through the worlds of jazz-funk, soul and reggae. It's the kind of warm, woozy and effortlessly soulful musical fusion that has long been associated with artists from New Zealand, though it's fair to say that Oakes does it better than most. In fact, as debuts go it's an absolute stunner.

Review: Almost four years have passed since the last studio set from Pantha Du Prince (real name Hendrik Weber), a producer whose output has steadily shifted from club-focused minimal techno to more melodious, atmospheric and experimental electronic compositions. "Conference of Trees" continues this trend, delivering a ten track set whose melodious, otherworldly and alluring compositions were partly created using all manner of specially-created wooden instruments (some of which he hand built himself). While it's undeniably a Pantha Du Prince album - even with the assistance of wood-created sounds there is still a reliance on his usual electronic approaches - "Conference Of Trees" feels somehow different, more human even. Given the spellbinding results, it's a departure we approve of.

Moving beyond the pure club focus of his singles and EPs, the Genie has seized this opportunity to present a widescreen panorama of his sound, leading in with the subliminal ambience of "You" as a springboard to explore breaks, electro, techno, and especially IDM. There are so many ideas swirling round Anthropomorphic Sympathy, it's hard to know where to begin describing it. A true headphone commute for the deep listener to burrow into.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but finally Beatrice Dillon has delivered her debut album - and it's a peach. It sees her "Workaround" a set rhythmic idea - 150 BPM percussive polyrhythms influenced by various global drumming styles - to create a suite of tracks rooted in bass-heavy UK style "broken techno" but vastly different in tone and style. Thanks to a range of impressive guest musicians (techno experimentalists Batu and Laurel Halo both contributed alongside veteran jazz players, one of Britain's best bhangra drummers and a cellist), there's a fantastic hybrid electronic/acoustic vibe throughout, with Dillon's experimental instincts combining with her grasp of mood and melody to create a suite of impossible-to-pigeonhole tracks that genuinely sound like nothing else around. In a word: superb

Review: While most records invite you to listen, this retrospective celebration of Brazilian songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Priscilla Ermel feels more like something that's inviting you into its own universe. A strange, exotic place to most western ears, if World Music wasn't such a generic and painfully sweeping term we'd apply it here. Sounds of the Amazon, sounds of the other, sounds of traditional emigre folk and a load of stuff that defies accurate description, this collection is impossible not to fall in love with. Having spent time learning the sonic ways of indigenous tribes in her homeland, then taking those instruments (among others) and re-appropriating them via field records and electronic synthesisers, she manages to create things of sombre beauty ("Meditacao"), work of percussive seduction ("Americua") and tracks packing mysterious, fantastical, futurist experimentation ("Mensageiro").

Review: South Korea's intimate and acclaimed venue, The Edge, was the address Parisian IDM and electronica talent DK chose to record this limited 12" journey into deep, atmospheric sound. Given the shamefully sweeping and stereotypical view of everything East Asia being steeped in traditions of spirituality, it's hard to imagine a more fitting location for these wares to be laid out. Less a case of individual tracks, and more along the lines of movements - to borrow from the classical world - listeners should prepare for a slice of avant-garde ambience here, with compositions offering moments of tension, release, subtle rhythm and soaring sonic scapes. Very much one for those who want their keys to grow and build like organic lifeforms, there's not much else to be said, other than you should prepare for a real aural experience.

Review: Coup d'etat is a collaborative project from Kane Ikin and Harvey Sutherland. Working from their respective fringes of electronic music and produced in moments of respite between extensive touring and recording commitments, the project offers a glimpse into the pair's mutual influences and inspirations; part Maurizio, part Moroder. Kane Ikin, a meticulous producer of abstract forms and polyrhythms, weaves percussive static and drone amongst Sutherland's considered syntheziser work - a leftfield turn from Harvey's brighter moments. Ikin also traverses new rhythmic territory and signals a departure from earlier ambient works. The inaugural release for new imprint CDT, the 12" was mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy and features full sleeve artwork from Traianos Pakioufakis.

  2. Missing Us
  3. Missing Us (dub)
Review: Marking the start of an exciting new collaborative project, Wolf + Lamb proudly share the debut release of The Waves & Us. Formed out of
a creative meeting of minds between Maayan Nidam, Markus Nikolaus and Louis McGuire, theirs is a sound that strengthens the storied
approach of a live band with the experimental thrust of analogue electronics. Pop and rock fundamentals lend an earthly hook to the
tracks, but these are anything but straight-forward songs.
Maayan has already forged a formidable career in electronic music, both under her own name and as part of Mara Trax, scoring releases
on such celebrated labels as Perlon. Markus performs his own solo project Cunt Cunt Chanel, while Louis is part of Ballet School, a band
releasing on noted indie label Bella Union. The whirlwind of creativity that has whipped up around the trio has yielded an album which will
follow this single, made up of one-take recordings that capture the energy and adventure that powers The Waves & Us.
Maayan's electronics provide the atmospheric backdrop to the songs, running modular synthesisers and drum machines through detailed
chains of processing and effects with an emphasis on a warm, charmingly rough finish. Markus' guitar undergoes a similar fuzzy treatment
while his voice calls out introspective, abstract lyrics to set the mind racing. Louis' bass underpins the music with a dubby sensibility,
bringing a necessary balance to the frequency range.
Making the most of their in-the-room recording approach, the singles will feature alternative takes of the songs that will appear on the
album, providing a little insight into the flutters and fluctuations that shape the development of this project. With their eyes fixed on live
performances and an arresting sound already formed, this is a vital time for all three artists and the people that listen to them.

Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form. Get this album while you can.

Review: Michael Mayer's Kompakt is at it again, delivering dance music that's unexpectedly different without being jarring. Or at least that's the case with opener 'Frame Dragging' - a track that feels like an electro-charged, disco-infused tech workout, but seems to disconnect its various elements with a beat set to the back of the arrangement. 'Gravity Well' belongs in the celebrated label's much-loved ambient ends, while 'Gamma Quadrant' delivers a bouncing kick drum set to soaring string refrains, giving the feeling of interstellar exploration, or at least constant cosmic build. Polished off with 'Protostar' and its downtempo, crystalline chords, packing stadia-filling atmosphere in abundance, it's a very good example of why Kompakt almost always means exceptional quality to experienced electronic heads. No anthems, just very, very good music.

Review: It has taken five years for FKA Twigs to follow up her astonishing first album, "LP1". With that kind of timeframe, you can't help but have high expectations for the finished product, expectations "Magdalene" more than meets from the off. An artist in the truest sense - with every step and stage in the recording process controlled by her - it's an accomplished comeback for a woman who in the last half decade has experienced both personal loss and major physical challenges. Don't expect more of the same, then, but instead a talent finding new purpose and new confidence following difficult times. With the ever-impressive Nicolas Jaar giving a helping hand, the result is a raw, honest record that's deeply personal, full of self-reflection and, ultimately, accepting and positive. Not to mention destined to be on repeat. Her position as one of the UK's most vital and compelling acts re-confirmed.

Review: It's quite shocking it's been six years since the last Caribou album, 2014's knockout "Our Love". Dan Snaith has never felt the need to rush his music out, and there was an interim Daphni album in 2017 to be fair to the guy, but here we are with a new set that sees Snaith returning to a little of the delicate songwriting and winsome electronica he forged his reputation on in the early days. There's a lot going on in here, from smooth as silk yacht rock-isms to deliriously modernist cut ups and more than a few wild pitch shifts to keep listeners on their toes. It's playful and heartfelt, and rarely lingers in one place for too long while still retaining a sense of calm. It may be not at all what you expected from Caribou's return, but we'd wager it's even better than you hoped.
