Review: Given the uniqueness of his madcap and mind-altering trademark sound, the release of any new album from Tom Jenkinson AKA Squarepusher is big news. Given that his last new full-length landed four years ago, the arrival of Dostrotime has got an awful lot of experimentalists in a bit of a lather. Like many albums that have surfaced in the last couple of years, it was apparently inspired by the "novel, eerie, sublime silence of lockdown", with the title being a reference to "how time passed differently". Review: When Hospital Records launched some 16 years ago, it was primarily to focus on the more soulful side of drum & bass. While London Elektricity's imprint is now about so much more than that, many of its' releases still bristle with an expansive soulfulness. This mixed, mid-price, two-disc affair pays tribute to the label's soulful side, delivering sinewy, string-laden gems, vocal anthems, and liquid D&B classics from the likes of SPY, High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Logistics, Danny Byrd, Phuturistix and, of course, London Elektricity. Who mixed it isn't revealed, but they've done a great job; both discs ripple with melody, emotion and, of course, skittering dancefloor rhythms. This is Fast Soul Music, after all.

Review: On Evolve, Nick Douwma has gone back to the future, offering up an album that giddily mines the music that inspired him to fall in love with electronic dance music in the first place. Review: Dominick Martin's Shelflife series takes us back into the very core of Calibre over the past 20 years, finally sharing tracks which were previously only aired in his DJ sets. It's testament to his rigorous approach to the music he released over that time, given how incredible some of these cuts are, but it's also a relief to finally be able to cop the likes of 'Breather', 'Home' and 'I Don't Care What U Say'. Review: Phonica Records toasts 20 years in style with this three-disc exploration of the house and techno they're best known for. It's no surprise they were able to pull in a heavyweight cast of characters for this collection, but they've made sure to leave enough room for the stars of tomorrow, too. Familiar names include Daniel Bell, Shy One, Willow, Peggy Gou, Midland, Will Saul and Ron Basejam, but there's also surprise inclusions like Tim Reaper and Comfort Zone teaming up for a signature jungle excursion. This is a heavyweight reflection of everything Phonica has represented for the past two decades, but equally a sign towards where they're heading in the future and it couldn't sound rosier.

Review: Metrik has long been one of Hospital Records' most intriguing artists - a producer whose weighty, punchy and futuristic take on drum and bass draws on a wider palette of influences (think Depeche Mode, Bjork, synth-wave, the Prodigy, film soundtracks and so on) than many of his contemporaries. Review: Lo and behold, it's Phace's third solo album and it's sounding like his best LP to date. Powerfully punchy and high impact as it's compacted into a 30 minute hurricane, each cut is a glitchy zip from trip to trip; the wily vocal drop outs on "Downgrade", the sweary speaker kicking "FMS", the wonderfully whimsical "Lazy Day" and the near cosmic synths, gurgling bass and fizzy slapbass on "Obscure" are just some of the highlights that ping and ricochet you around Phace's multi layered, multi faceted, multi dimensional album. It's a two-disc affair that draws both on the label's bulging back catalogue (check out the heavyweight D&B anthems from the likes of Pendulum, Chase & Status, Camo & Crooked, Nero and co-founder Adam F) and a healthy string of unheard exclusives. These come from the likes of heavy hitters the Brookes Brothers and Drumsound and Bassline Smith, though our pick has to be the surging bass-weight and UK funky bounce of Fresh and Roska's brilliant "Keep Your Head Up".

Review: Given that four years have passed since the last volume in the series, it could be argued that Liquidity's latest Galaxy of Dreams compilation is long overdue. Like its' predecessors, the collection delivers an action-packed set of all new and exclusive liquid D&B cuts. Of course, there are surprising diversions - check the melodious D&B/hip-hop fusion of "Miles Apart" by Maduk and Dennis Pedersen featuring Ella Noel and rapper Rino, and the hybrid neurofunk/liquid roller "Rush" by Blooom [Sic] - but for the most part it's an attractive and colourful affair, rich in tracks that put soulful vocals, kaleidoscopic synth lines, bold trance style melodies and EDM-esque riffs front and centre. Liquidity fans will love it.

Review: Since gate crashing the drum and bass party back in 2009, Mefjus (AKA Austrian producer Martin Schober) has consistently delivered high quality material for a range of labels, most notably Critical Recordings. This time out he's operating on Vision Recordings, offering up a second album, some four years on from releasing his well-received debut full-length. After opening with the foreboding, scene-setting cyber-ambient of "Manifest", the long-serving DJ/prodiucer proceeds to lay down a rip-snorting selection of peak-time D&B cuts marked out by dark and throbbing neruofunk style wobble basslines, clandestine textures, creepy orchestration and punchy, occasionally rolling breakbeats that occasionally tend towards the old school. There are also occasional blasts of experimental D&B - see "Ringshifter" and the stabbing "Work It" - and hard-to-define bass music fusions containing notably weighty low-end motifs.

Review: As the FabricLive mix series inches towards its centennial release, the venerated London superclub has recruited drum and bass scene stalwart Dimension to mix the 98th edition. Given that it is his first commercially released DJ mix, we weren't surprised to find out that over half the included tracks are previously unreleased or exclusive "VIP" remixes from fellow D&B producers. At 56 tracks deep it's something of a thrill-a-minute ride, taking in various strands and sub-genres, cuts from rising stars and heavy hitters, and enough rip-snorting breakbeats and rumbling sub-bass blasts to keep any D&B head happy. As you'd expect given Dimension's own productions, there's plenty of soulful vocals and expansive musicality dotted throughout, too.

Review: While Calibre's studio albums are invariably superb, his periodic Shelflife compilations of unreleased tracks and tried-and-tested dubplates are often even better. Predictably, this fifth volume in the series not only hits the spot, but also contains some genuinely grade-A material. Many will naturally gravitate towards high-class DRS hook-up "City Life" and the sought-after Marcus Intalex collaboration "Bluesday" (a typically warm, melodious and soulful affair), but there are plenty of other highlights amongst the 12 tracks on. These largely tend towards the more sun-kissed and breezy end of the D&B spectrum, though there are some tougher and darker workouts (see the low-slung sci-fi growl of "Jaboc") amongst Calibre's waves of dancefloor positivity.

Review: Over the last decade, Hallucinator has carved its own niche in the world of dark D&B, developing a style they call "drill 'n' thrill". Fuzzy, forthright, intense and aggressive, with mutant industrial motifs and thrusting, guitar style riffs wrapped around rip-snorting rhythms, it could arguably be described as the drum and bass version of extreme metal. Certainly, this sophomore album is a deliciously full-throttle affair, with the experienced Italian duo refusing to compromise. The result is a thrill-a-minute set stacked to the rafters with punchy club cuts, raging future anthems and twisted, dark-style madness.

Review: With 2017 drawing to a close, festival organizers turned record label Liquicity deliver their round of the year's best drum & bass tracks. While their style naturally tends towards the "liquid D&B" end of the spectrum, this collection is far more wide-ranging in tone than you might expect. So while there are of course plenty of melodious, head-in-the-clouds moments from Hybrid Minds, FD (brilliantly remixed by Calibre), Kamo & Crooked, Faint and Mohican Sun, the non-stop 33-track mix also boasts a swathe of soaring vocal anthems, synth-heavy smashers, EDM-influenced radio hits and even a dash of punchy jungle revivalism (Smooth's soulful and evocative "My Feeling").

Review: After a six-hear hiatus, Hospital Records has decided to re-launch the Sick Music compilation series. This 2018 edition is something of an epic, featuring two discs of unmixed exclusives (all but one of which have never previously been released) and a thrill-a-minute, 60-minute mix of the same material by Bristol-based label stalwart S.P.Y. Naturally, there are some notable inclusions - a fantastic first solo effort from the hotly-tipped King of the Rollers, a retro-futurist gem from Hospital royalty Danny Byrd, and a host of fresh remixes of material from the likes of London Elektricity, Keeno and Shadow Child - but the standard throughout remains refreshingly high.

Review: Few have served the jungle and drum and bass scene with quite as much distinction as Nicky Blackmarket, a genuine scene pioneer who remains popular on the UK club circuit after three decades in the game. Given these credentials, you'd expect his latest mix CD - his first for two years - to be rather good. It's certainly a thrill-a-minute affair, with Blackmarket squeezing 50 slammers onto two CDs. You'll find jungle revivalism old and new, party-hearty jump-up faire, darker and more aggressive workouts, classic reggae and ragga influences, some deliciously dreamy liquid diversions and more mind-altering wobble basslines than your average Skrillex set. In other words, it's a top-drawer party-starting mix-up.
