Review: Given the uniqueness of his madcap and mind-altering trademark sound, the release of any new album from Tom Jenkinson AKA Squarepusher is big news. Given that his last new full-length landed four years ago, the arrival of Dostrotime has got an awful lot of experimentalists in a bit of a lather. Like many albums that have surfaced in the last couple of years, it was apparently inspired by the "novel, eerie, sublime silence of lockdown", with the title being a reference to "how time passed differently". Quite how this plays out within the music itself is open to interpretation; for the most part, what's on offer is prime Squarepusher - all distorted, full-throttle acid lines, mutilated experimental D&B beats, analogue electronics and rasping, strobe-lit nods to raves,

Review: Tides is the latest album from Hybrid Minds, whose efforts have landed him at the forefront of the contemporary pop/drum & bass race of late. Hot off the heels of an initial LP release, this CD edition of Tides tops up the album's format-ography. The album sounds as huge on optical-digital as it does analogue; every track is effortless in its glossy command of space and bursting vocal synergy, calling attention to Hybrid Minds' collaboration-heavy approach to creation (every track bar one is a feature track, the best of which include Tom Walker, Grimm and Charlotte Plank).

Review: Calibre as we all know is a machine. The man has produced thousands of records, each one as exceptional as the next, across drum & bass, house and bass music. His latest album Rudy shows no dip in quality with another a masterful display of his signature sound making it another timeless classic. Each track is a journey into his famously lush melodies, intricate rhythms, and soulful vocal touches, all of which showcasing Calibre's unmatched skill in crafting emotive drum & bass compositions. From dreamy atmospheres to the pulsating low ends, heart aching samples and driving drums, every moment captivates with its depth and keen sense of musicality.

Review: When Hospital Records launched some 16 years ago, it was primarily to focus on the more soulful side of drum & bass. While London Elektricity's imprint is now about so much more than that, many of its' releases still bristle with an expansive soulfulness. This mixed, mid-price, two-disc affair pays tribute to the label's soulful side, delivering sinewy, string-laden gems, vocal anthems, and liquid D&B classics from the likes of SPY, High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Logistics, Danny Byrd, Phuturistix and, of course, London Elektricity. Who mixed it isn't revealed, but they've done a great job; both discs ripple with melody, emotion and, of course, skittering dancefloor rhythms. This is Fast Soul Music, after all.

Review: There is a mix of old-school dons and new-school talents from all over the world here, each adding their own unique spin to Goldie's timeless. It's a record that remains a drum & bass benchmark, but also one of the most seminal in all of electronic music. The man behind it celebrated its anniversary last year with various different projects and now follows that up by handpicking a selection of remixes to take his most treasured material. Searchlight, aka Irish drum and bass producers ZeroT and Beta2, are signed exclusively to Goldie's Fallen Tree 1Hundred label and bring some lush jazz and broken beats to 'State of Mind' and later 'Sensual' while Metalheadz tastemaker J Kenzo brings dark, minimalistic and tribal sound to his Tribute remix of 'Jah'.

Review: Dominick Martin's Shelflife series takes us back into the very core of Calibre over the past 20 years, finally sharing tracks which were previously only aired in his DJ sets. It's testament to his rigorous approach to the music he released over that time, given how incredible some of these cuts are, but it's also a relief to finally be able to cop the likes of 'Breather', 'Home' and 'I Don't Care What U Say'. The range of d&b on offer here is remarkable too, from moody, heads-down tech steppers to gorgeous, soul drenched swooners, with an unerring quality which lets you know it's Calibre at the controls.

Review: Phonica Records toasts 20 years in style with this three-disc exploration of the house and techno they're best known for. It's no surprise they were able to pull in a heavyweight cast of characters for this collection, but they've made sure to leave enough room for the stars of tomorrow, too. Familiar names include Daniel Bell, Shy One, Willow, Peggy Gou, Midland, Will Saul and Ron Basejam, but there's also surprise inclusions like Tim Reaper and Comfort Zone teaming up for a signature jungle excursion. This is a heavyweight reflection of everything Phonica has represented for the past two decades, but equally a sign towards where they're heading in the future and it couldn't sound rosier.

Review: 2019 has been big for Goldie. The late summer saw the anniversary reissue of his second album "Saturnz Return", and now he's put together a bumper collection of drum & bass gems. Across "60 tracks that smashed it" as the release is sub-titled, the proudly British sound of drum & bass is explored and exposed thanks to music from all the key players including Roni Size, Doc Scott, Photex, Krust, DJ Zinc and many more familiar faces. Of course, the Metalheadz boss' own "Inner City Life" kicks off in triumphant fashion and the vibes keep coming thick and fast from there on in.

Review: Fanu is Finland's and perhaps the world's finest break-beat splicer and re-imaging doctor. His programming, layering, and arrangements of classic break-beats are truly some of the most innovative and by far the most realistic sounding - akin to a jazz drummer with no boundaries and seventeen available drum kits at once. Bill Laswell is the grammy award winning producer of Herbie Hancock, bassist and arranger extraordinaire. Fresh off the amazing Method of Defiance record 'Inamorata', he's completed this follow up recording, on the Ohm Resistance label, which also features Parliament Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell and Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer prominently. If you took the electric period of Miles Davis, with less repetition, more funk, and mad scientist drummer, you might end up halfway to 'Lodge'. Half time vamps swing with steady funk bass from Laswell and one of Bernie Worrell's most inspired keyboard performances since PFunk, 'Lodge' turns it out with much more emphasis on the groove. Bits of drum n bass and floating trumpet maneuver over the core modular pieces; a much less harsh sound than the Method of Defiance project, more demonstrative of the soul of Laswell's funktronics.

Review: Phunkfiction celebrates its 10th release by serving a seriously hot menu: This delicious 2xcd album with 20 un-mixed songs. Well
known drum and bass chefs like Contour, Kubiks, Henree, Eveson and Lomax and more joined the kitchen to create this culinary
delight. Also Amaning, Subz and J-Cut, Camo, Adam Form, Geetox and Concept, Stunna, Royce and many more. You have got no
choice: 'Eat Phunk'! Fruity beats and well-flavoured basses all combined with the secret label ingredient called dancefloor phunk.
Behind the label it's Roman Herbst, (label manager, press & bookings) Sebastian Wolters aka DJ Bass, Tikal (label manager, DJ,
producer) and Carsten Lukas (marketing, artworks). They have the same aim, to promote and push the music they love and live. On
Phunkfiction Recordings they will be releasing a colourful mixture of soulful music with the main focus on soulful d&b. Therefore they
deal with artists no matter if they are already well-known or bloody newcomers. A good piece of music with a great portion of
soul & funk should always be the thing that stands in front of everything for Phunkfiction.

Review: His name is PU22L3. Puzzle if you're slow. Custodial artist by day, bass bin killer by night. PU22L3 found an outlet touring and playing in thrash and metal bands. After everything burst, he decided to carve his niche within experimental music. Local homeless refer to his music as "Drugbient" because of how it induces vomiting and loose bowels after being heard. Or maybe it's the crack they freshly smoked? On "Falling To pieces" his mission is to burn speaker cones and blow out sub woofers. If you miss this Daily City release don't blame us.

Review: From the horses mouth:

"We are 3 blokes who drink beer and moan a lot whilst occasionally making music. Through the haze of many a hangover we have astonishingly and quite fortunately almost finished an album.... its gonna be called The Eleventh Hour because we do everything at the last minute and for other reasons also."

"The Eleventh Hour", the title track and killer intro to the album, is a lot more than the heaviest, fluid, drum rolling, broken up beat-fest - it's a sonic statement that really sums up their frustrations as to what has happened to their beloved music. Alongside their resident MC DRS they have written a track that really tells the truth about a scene which is losing its integrity at an astonishing rate.

Review: Phace is the name of two long time friends Florian and Nicolas who hail from south-west Germany. Since forming in 1999, they have been dedicated, some would say addicted, to refining their unique sound - deep, futuristic and spacey d&b. After seven years Phace have put together something of a masterpiece - "Psycho". This is experimental d&b, breaking new ground, whilst ignoring all the rules. It's deep, dark and brilliant.

Review: The majority of drum & bass artists that achieve a Top 40 hit usually make the mistake of immediately trying to come with another one that sounds exactly the same but it doesn't work. D Kay made no such mistake, instead D Kay just continued to make the music he wanted to make which has included a whole host of underground hits including "Serenade", "Desire" and "Woe" (featured on Jenna G's award winning album). All the while D Kay has been working away on his very own long-player: "Individual Soul". "Individual Soul" is like no other drum & bass album that you would have ever come across. The album isn't even being released in a DJ friendly format. Instead Brigand Records urge you to sit down, put this record on, and really listen to it.

Review: Throughout the nineties there was one act that very quickly became synonymous with the hardcore rave scene, playing at every party and responsible for producing some of the biggest anthems of the time, they were Top Buzz. Originally formed in the late 80s by three guys from London, they were Jason Kaye, Mikee B & MC Mad P. During the early 1990s Mikee B took a back seat for a while before returning as a member of the famous Dream Team and left Jason & Mad P to continue building the Top Buzz name through the early 90s. Becoming legends of Amnesia, Dreamscape, Fantazia, Obsession, Perception, Raindance, Telepathy & Tribal Gathering and many many more, there was hardly a major rave in the early 90s that they weren't playing at. It was during this era that Mad P coined the now infamous term, "Jungle techno" to describe this exciting new sound that was emerging from the rave scene and had to be the title for this latest Urbanthology release. In 1990 the guys hooked up with the Infamous Basement Records and recorded a string of releases such as "Living In Darkness" & "Maintain Her", which helped forge the sound we now call drum & bass. They also recorded some top remixes of acts such as The Prodigy, Raging Rockers, Anthill Mob, A Homeboy A Hippie & A Funki Dredd & Criminal Mindz. So with a huge following for both their live performances and releases you'll understand when you put this CD in your player, you will instantly feel a tingle through your spine, you will fly back to days gone by, as soon as the first beat drops and Mad Ps voice comes across, you will realise that there was a music and a time that can never be forgotten. Bring on jungle techno, bring on Top Buzz.

Review: Enduser is one of the cornerstones of the modern eclectic electronic music. Support from BBC Radio's Mary Anne Hobbs and
a list of DJs too long to fit on a one sheet, from many different genres, and releases across many platforms have built him into a
juggernaut. A usually prolific artist, having recorded for Hymen, Ad Noiseam, Sublight, Cargo, and many others, he took 2007 off,
working on something very special - his debut album on Ohm Resistance, 'Left'. Having relocated to San Francisco, a new lease
on his creative power is demonstrated adroitly over the entire album. 'Left' shows the most range of Enduser's album making career.
Intensely personal, intensely musical, and just plain intense at points, the album showcases a spectacular array of skills across the
board. From radio play material ('black light') with Aussie vocalist Sol Thomas, to collaborations with and remixes by influential electronic
acts Scorn and Counterstrike, to absolutely stunning, no boundaries drum n bass, the album is diverse and full of powerful compositions.
Compelling from start to finish, 'Left' is the culmination of more than a year's work.

Review: Bungle, Brazil's very own drum & bass wonder boy, is the hottest thing to hit dance music since the first wave of the Brazilian invasion in the late nineties. His remarkable gift for producing tunes that cover all styles of drum & bass is second to none. Bungle, better known in Sao Paulo as Andre Oliveira Sobota, has been making music since the age of seven. Bungle truly is a drum & bass artist with a difference. His debut studio album "Down To Earth" reflects on his versatility with vibrancy and vision. The breadth of his talents is highlighted as the album moves through a selection of styles; from dense, dark, and dangerous beats, to magical, musical melodies oozing with lush vocals from Darrison, Ayah and Laura Pacheco. DJs currently supporting tracks from the album include DJ Marky, Hype, Bryan Gee, Fabio, Grooverider, Flight, Bailey, Cyantific, Total Science, Q Project, and more.

Review: Though the name Gouseion may be unfamiliar to you, you may well have heard his work in the past. Cassidy Demarco, as he is known to his friends, keeps himself busy by recording under an astounding eleven aliases, including C++, Monodec and Minijack, as well as participating in three collaborative projects. "Puisne" is a record that blends and bastardises electronica with hip-hop, breakcore and more. Using lofi 8-bit sounds with seriously heavy production techniques, every sound cuts through the mix and forces you to fall head first into the body-moving rhythms and jarring synth lines on offer.

Review: From there on the mood ebbs and flows nicely, taking in some of Zero T's own work, such as his remix of the Slam classic "Positive Education" and the Steo collaboration "Walk Away". We're not talking Villalobos levels of self congratulatory mixology here though, and there are plenty of highlights. The moment where the dread vibes of System's "Speed Of Light" gloriously melds into the crystalline light of "Heaven" by Lemonade for example. The intermittent usage of vocal tracks the heavy bass rollers keeps it interesting for non drum and bass fans - something Zero T made a conscious effort to ensure when tasked by Fabric with this mix.

Review: Six years on from his last album, Underground Superstardom, German drum and bass madman Mathis Mootz aka The Panacea is back with his sixth full-length set, Chiropteran. Any ideas that this renegade producer might have gone soft over the years are thoroughly dispelled right from the outset, as the sinister opener "Gjallarhorn" launches a horror-core assault on the listener, breaking into a tight drum break right at the end and launching into the furious "Creatch". As the album progresses, Panacea takes it on to new levels. "4/4 FrsTYL" is gabba brilliance, while the equally off the hook "Crypto" keeps a techno-gabba vibe to the intro before breaking off into some genius warped jungle lunacy. Incredibly well crafted with enough ravey power to last the whole summer, Chiropteran is a sick masterpiece that shouldn't be allowed to pass you by.

Whilst some names such as June Miller, Cause 4 Concern, Data and Spinline, others may not. Highlights from across the selection include Cause 4 Concerns murky, moody roller "Under Forever", Amoss' "We All Grow" with its politicized lyrics and warping dubbed out b-line and fidgety Rockwell-esque edits and Data's opening cut "Formless", with its clicking beats and growling b-line. A nice taster of what we can expect from Horizons in the future.

Review: When we think of Berlin, it's rarely as a hotbed of paranoid, mind-warping drum & bass. Yet in recent times the Trust in Music label has strived tirelessly to put the city on the junglist map. Here they unveil the first full-length from Euro-junglists Rregulta and Dementia, two producers best known for a bold, often fierce take on D&B. Echoes From The Future continues this dark, tech-tinged approach, mischievously flitting between darting cyber-jungle ("The Chippy"), colossal darkroom rollers (previous single "Sludge Tunnel", here remixed by Optiv), piano-laden wobblers ("New Orleans") and electro-dipped vocal fare ("Insilva", featuring MC Flava).

Review: Austrian drum and bass four-piece Fourward have been slowly building a reputation on the jungle scene since 2009, largely via 12" singles on Citrus, Fokuz, Audio Porn and Virus. Here they present their debut full-length, a tech-tinged collection of brain-melting D&B rollers that touches on a variety of junglist flavours. So while Fourward's default position is heavy and dark with a hint of stoned paranoia, there are also upbeat forays into piano-laden territory (the anthemic "Amigo"), Timeless-ish, Amen-laden vocal numbers ("Enclosure"), twisted dubstep ("Temptations") and snappy jungle-funk ("You & Me"). Throughout, the combination of light and dark elements is refreshingly stark.

Review: Japanese producer Makoto Shimizu first made his name on LTJ Bukem's legendary Good Lookin' imprint. In recent times, he's continued his D&B explorations whilst pursuing a more soulful sound that takes in slower tempos and influences from a wide range of styles. Souled Out, his first album in 2007, continues this theme, utilizing a multitude of vocalists and a variety of rhythmic styles to deliver a smart, 21st century soul set brimming with slick and stylish songs. So, while the sparkling D&B jams remain (see "Keep Me Down" and "Woe"), Makoto also offers up sassy future boogie ("Girl Am I Running Back To You"), life-affirming soul stompers ("Tower Of Love"), R&B and broken beats.

Review: The mighty Austrian duo who have brought us smash hit singles such as "Make The Call" and "All Fall Down" now step up with their piece de resistance Cross The Line on genre-defining label Hospital Records. Featuring collaborations with Ayah Marar, TC, Skittles, Shaz Sparks, Futurebound and Jenna G, the album spans D&B, dubstep, drumstep and electro-house in a 14-track genre-crossing opus that will have you raising the roof with excitement. Highlights from across the album include the immense, tempo-switching "Run Riot" and the euphoric, feel-good title track "Cross the Line". Essential listening.

Review: Congratulations are due to veteran British D&B label Shogun Audio, as this compilation of never-before-heard tracks marks their fiftieth release. As you'd imagine, there are some reliably big hitters present, including Commix, Friction, Icicle and Rockwell. Musically it's impressively varied, flitting between slick, garage-influenced soulful flavours, pulsating low-end skank and relentless rollers. There's even the odd trip into atmospheric dubstep territory (see Icicle & Distance's "Exhale"). With such high-grade producers on show highlights come thick and fast, with Break's flourishing "Tryin" and the smart two-step soul of Alix Perez, Spectrasoul and Rockwell's "Montellier" standing out. An essential purchase for junglists everywhere.
