Zyon Base - "Snow Country"
Greeley & Lomax - "String Thing"
Review: Zyon Bass explores the deep side of drum n bass with his proper killer "Snow Country", released on Fokuz. Razor-sharp beats, crispy rolling amens, deep pulsating neuro basslines and wicked strings all in place here, make no mistake! On the flip its Greeley & Lomax with 'String Theory', a track with beautiful atmospheres, big, bad bassline and seriously rolling beats.

Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint got off to a promising start last year with the Wrong Headspace 12" from Latvian artist N1L. Gamble's purview for the label is clearly international as this second UIQ release dips into the world of Zuli, aka Ahmed El Ghazoly, Egyptian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Cairo. Limited to 400 copies. Jagged beat experiments merge with high definition sound design plus classic and exotic instrumentation on "Robotic Handshakes in 4D", it's an apt title, really. New frontiers in bass music are explored on "131001G", texturised minimal techno on "Ahmed?" and rather abrasive bass assisted noise experiments like on final track "Dr Beckett". What next for UIQ? Consider us intrigued.

Sweetz (7:08)
Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

With Love
Review: The original enfant terrible of the bass music world is back with a new album, marking his second long player for 4AD with a sprawling opus of more than 30 skits and skirmishes daubed in his trademark colourful sonic scrawl. There is plenty here that reminds you of the early days of the producer's emergence when dubstep was a younger beast, from the spacious "Horrid" to the measured arpeggios of "Pray For Me", but you'll also find more intricate musings such as the dynamic and dramatic "Memories". Hype abounds on the creepy Funky of "VI-XI", while "Overdose" launches enthusiastically into a jungle tear out. At any given turn, you'll find yourself surprised, lurched from a serene mood into a manic one, only to be tempered again. There's a staggering range of ideas and styles to comprehend here, but would you want it any other way from one of electronic music's most outspoken upstarts?

Surf I (5:44)
Surf II (4:34)
Slime (4:47)
Acid Surf (3:41)
Review: Let's Jam sees the return of London's Zomby after his recent escapades with grime producer Wiley, and the bass experimentalist lands on the mighty XL Recordings with two EP's, this being the first part. On the A-side, "Surf I" and "Surf II" are the housiest things we've heard from Zomby, but although many producers seek to imitate the 4/4, our main man does it his own way. "Slime" is a wonky bit of stutter-house with clear grime influences, and "Acid Surf" is a bumping lick propelled forwards by gargling swirls of 303 delight. Strong.

Peroxide (3:20)
Xenon (3:36)
Review: London's shadowy bass maestro Zomby lands on the above-the-line XL Recordings with four hybrid tunes, a blend of pure experimentation from the lower end of the sound spectrum. "Neon" is a wonky, bleeped-out jam, whereas "Bloom" is more of a contemporary hip-hop instrumental. On the B-side, "Peroxide" takes a slow tempo and dabs plenty of gunfire over its groove, and "Xenon" prolongs that vibe into an even more melancholic bundle of sounds and beats.

Review: Zomby returns to Hyperdub with his first album in three years, trailed in high profile fashion by that Burial collaboration "Sweetz." That particular tune is one of Ultra's headline attractions, alongside eyebrow-raising collaborations with Darkstar, Banshee and Rezzett. What really impresses, though, is the skewed, left-of-centre nature of the mask-wearing producer's heavy, post-grime rhythms, sparse but sparkling synth work, and the breathlessly cut-up R&B vocals dotted throughout the set. Interestingly, there are subtle nods towards new wave synth-pop, ghetto-tech, spacey ambient and alien IDM, making Ultra Zomby's most intriguing and consistently on-point album to date.

Review: Zomby is as elusive as he is brilliant as he is outspoken. For that reason he has become a firm favourite in the UK underground scene. This EP is actually a collection of some of his most cherished but long lost sounds and features sought after jams 'She Loves Me', 'She Loves Me Not' and 'Soundbwoy R.I.P.' They are all well designed, wall-rattling and brain twisting rave bangers with militant breakbeats, hoover sounds, rude-boy vocal stabs and jungle rhythms. They perfectly embody the whole history of the UK hardcore continuum and are sure to still sound as good years from now.

Review: Zomby is back with another instalment of his Chaos Reins series. It is made up of music that the loudmouth but well respected UK producer has dug out from his vaults, but the material has all aged well. In fact, stylish breaks and bass like this is pretty ageless: people are always going to want to lose their shit to dark steppers and post-rave cuts such as these in a grotty and disused space. This one starts on a deep and introspective bleeps tip, then takes in reflective and glassy melodies on a shuffling garage beat and some haunting late night bass. For us, the eerie pads and skeletal rhythm of 'Fragments' is the real highlight for the way it subtly layers in an r&b vocal that brings hints of hope and soul.

O To The M (6:07)
Diviner (6:10)
Review: Not a huge amount is known about Zodiac Childs besides the fact that this is their debut release (under this name at least), Zodiac Wax is their label and the sounds are seriously intergalactic. All spacey breakbeat jams flexing around the 125 mark, there's a timeless cosmic rave feel laced throughout. "Basic Process" flutters with psy-like twinkles and Vamp-ish stabs, "O To The M" is a euphoric spine-melting vocal cut with some great doubled up drum layers while "Diviner" strips things right back to bare bones acid wriggles. Whatever your star sign, Zodiac Childs forecasts a groovy future.

Loss Config
138
Review: Canadian producer Zodiac (nee Jeremy Rose) was allegedly uncredited for his production on a record by The Weeknd, but now returns (fully credited) with his own EP for Jacques Greene's Vase label. What we get is five slices of exquisitely produced 'cerebral-hop', if you will. "GirlGirlGirl", basically takes an early 90s R&B sample and slows it right down, getting to a real grind pace, before draping it in silk sheets of seductive synths. "Come" is a bleepy, sleepy, slow jam with a Maxwell-style vocal from Jesse Boykins III. "Loss Config" is an unusual instrumental featuring a classical piano motif and "138", with its hands-in-the-air melodies and lilting beats, ends things on high. Classy stuff!

Oni (Om Unit Wrongspeed)
Review: Bristol's Crazylegs night inaugurate their freshly minted label with the debut release from the hotly tipped Ziro, who delivers two tracks of hard-hitting swung techno with a pinch of UK bass style. "Coded" and "Oni" deliver the same kind of stripped back, darkly functional rhythms as fellow Brisolian Artifact, full of swagger and impeccably off the grid beats. Remixes come from Om Unit, whose incredible "Wrongspeed" remix of "Oni" sounds like breakbeat footwork with pieces missing, and Thefft, whose remix of "Coded" adds all sorts of rattling fills into Ziro's spacious original.

Review: Bristol's Ziro is fast becoming his city's most sought after new artist, and we can't go anywhere these days without hearing his name being mentioned. So, we expected good things with this latest outing on his native Crazylegs, and we were certainly not disappointed with these five scorching bass swelters. "Lionheart" itself is jagged, heavy and brings forth a mass of broken drums like stabs to the chest, and "Strafe" carries that vibe forward but manages to lock the groove into tighter space. "Dun Talk" features the ragga style vocals of Riko Dan, making for a heavy bashment kind of vibe, whereas "Distant" is a pensive electronic moment for those wishing to meditate on some low-end, and "Rapture" is a true UK hybrid - house, dubstep, broken and garage all run through its veins.
