Submotion Orchestra - "All Yours" (SPY remix)
Review: S.P.Y makes his highly anticipated debut on Hospital Records with Love & Hate, a four-track journey into the darkest depths of D&B with plenty of old skool influences, marking a return to core values and a pure sound. The title track is dominated by pounding sub bass stabs with moody atmospherics and twisted diva vocals. "Clouds" blends brooding virus synths with machine funk for a techstep banger, whilst "Sleepy Hollow" sees S.P.Y strip back production to a Detroit influenced sound with epic synths. The S.P.Y remix of Submotion Orchestra's "All Yours" rounds things off in style.

Review: We've had five consecutive days of blistering sunshine in the UK, so it must be time for the annual Hospitality Summer Drum & Bass CD. Now something of a staple in the release schedules, it rarely fails to please with its sweet, soulful, energetic and, above all, funk-laden take on jungle. This year's edition is mixed by Hospital bossman London Electricity (aka Tony Colman), who squeezes 30-plus tracks into an hour of mid-price, festival-friendly fun. There's little in the way of surprises - by now, we should all know what to expect from Hospital and their shimmering brand of 'disco drum and bass' - but plenty of bangers, making it a snip at L4.99.

Review: Three times deep obscure electronics - Think along the lines of the latest Carl Craig or Marcel Dettmann productions. Deep!
Revived is the Delsin sub-label Ann Aimee! Again an outlet for the more experimental sides of Delsin's electronic music.
James Kumo is a new talent from Manchester, and debuts with 'Kumomusic Vol 1' and these three tight productions.
'Fluid' is a fluffy deep house track, '45 Days' is all dark and mean, while 'Koma' brings in stripped-down, spacey, hypnotic synth galore.

Review: ''Rock My Soul'' sees a great borrowed vocal from Delano Tyler topping a bass-heavy backdrop from the Octave One folks, with stabbing old school synths, great percussion, chunky beats, and that great meaty bassline all helping to work the floors. You also get a vocal-free take for all you bass driven peak-time house lovers. On the flip is a chunky techno-fuelled houser packed with solid synth lines, driving beats, and a strong bassline.

Final Approach
Review: The first of three Creme Jak releases to land on our shelves this week comes from James T. Cotton and D'Marc Cantu's 2 AM/FM project. "The Final Approach" opens in cinematic fashion, a menacing bass throb working underneath slowly swirling synths. Soon after a compressed kick drum enters the fray, complemented by twinkling keys which give the tracks a small ray of light. The track then all but finishes before kicking back in with more ominous vocals and a spacey Frankie Knuckles-esque Chi-town synth pattern, bringing to a close another epic galactic adventure on Creme Jak.

The More I Want (feat Rox)
Take That
Review: Exclusive Ram signing DC Breaks follow up their 2009 smash hit "Pickett Line" on sub-label Frequency with another hands-in-the-air anthem featuring lush, soaring vocals from Rox. DC Breaks fans may remember her from the duo's superb remix of "My Baby Left Me" a year or so ago. Catering for the Annie Mac market this time, they blend rolling percussion with sonorous, melodic strings and finish it with a glossy polish. "Take That", up next, kicks off with unnerving notes, sci-fi synth swoops and sweeping strings, before dropping into classic Ram tear out, complete with rowdy bassline, growling vocal sample and soaring synths aplenty. Massive.

Data Economics
Review: The third in Delta Funktionen's Setup One series maintains the Dutch producer's ability to make deep, robust techno that simply works on the dancefloor. "Another Dimension" contains those idiosyncratic rasping hats and disturbing vocal cuts - and like all techno primed for the floor, the beat just feels that little bit more robust when it comes back in after the breakdown. "Miss Communication", up next, contains some thunderous drums rolling deep beneath radar bleeps before the unbeatably named "Minds Into Meltdown" maintains the sweaty momentum on the flip. The toughest of the lot though has to be "Data Economics", one of the most weird, paranoid, downright brilliant dancefloor tracks we've heard all year. Just don't do what we did and accidentally blast it through the office speakers at 45 RPM...

Review: 'Kings of Techno' is the 6th instalment in a compilation series that grows more ubiquitous with each release. Over 130,000 albums have been sold in a series that brings together globally renowned DJs & producers to reveal their favourite tracks in the genre they themselves have become best known for. 'The Kings Of' albums allow compilers to make choices well beyond the usual restraints imposed on them. Each release features striking artwork from 60s Rolling Stones photographer & bon viveur extraordinaire Michael Joseph. Techno has its roots in Detroit, more precisely in the eclectic late radio programs of Charles "The Electrifying Mojo" Johnson which heavily featured early electronic works (Moroder, Kraftwerk...) and funk, giving birth to a new genre in the mind of a fistful of African-American students, 'The Belleville Three': Derrick May, Juan Atkins & Kevin Saunderson. Featuring a percussive, synthetic sound and a 4/4 beat, techno developed from a strictly underground phenomenon to an established, global genre when it came to England and from there the rest of the world. But this album is not your average techno mix album. How could it be - it features two of dance music's most significant players of the last 15 years. Laurent Garnier was one of the first Europeans to mix American house and techno music in Britain, earning his crown in the glory days of the Hacienda in the late 80s. Some tracks of his mix will be immediately recognizable as techno, such as the obscure 'Just A Feeling' by Instinct - deeply evocative of a 101 lost weekends in the 'Hac', as it affectionately became know by regulars - or the phenomenal 'Utopia' by Jeff Mills - a track which best defines the atmospheric soundscapes associated with the genre. But far from being strictly techno, Garnier's mix is both a testimony to the genre's main influences and an eclectic tribute to the town that saw its emergence: Detroit. The great beauty of his mix is the layering of the many styles, travelling from Alice Coltrane and Aretha Franklin to The Stooges, from Motown's Temptations to Slum Village to futuristic hip-hop-anthem-in-the-making Dabrye's collaboration with Jay Dee on 'Game Over'. Carl Craig grew up in Detroit; his diverse musical output has gained him fans from a broad range of musical backgrounds. Considered as one of the main figures of the second generation of Detroit techno producers, his extensive DJing all over the world witnessed the development of the genre. In direct contrast to Laurent's mix, his takes in music that mostly emanated from Europe. Like Laurent's, some falls easily into the techno category: Nitzer Ebb's industrial bass heavy 'Join In The Chant' fits seamlessly with Capricorn's 'I Need Love' from defunct early 90s trance label Sperm Records. Visage and Human League will be remembered for European chart success in the glory days of late 70s, early 80s pop music, the former perhaps better known for their hit 'Fade To Grey', the latter for their massive 'Don't You Want Me Baby'. Both had a high voltage current running through their music and significantly these tracks still gain a cheer on today's dance floor. So expect the unexpected, once again the meeting of minds in the 'Kings Of' series has spawned an informed, genre-defying double CD that's mixed to perfection, and that takes us on a journey from which we won't want to, or simply can't, return.

Review: Gene is back again fresh off his Abe Duque Records contributions. Best known for his voodoo style techno on labels Cocoon and Stripped. "Off the Wagon" is quite a journey with a rolling bass thump leading into swirling synths and mysterious stabs grab hold of the sound. A long build pauses the mix and the hair raising twist begins. On the flip "Tantra" is sexy, very in tense and very voodoo just perfect for ADR.
