Review: Jeff Mills throws a spaghettifying curveball with latest EP 'The Trip'. Themed after the terrifying notion of entering a black hole, and likening this to the vicarious yet no less enjoyable illusions of grandeur that might go hand in hand with attending a Millsart rave, 'The Trip' has been routinely billed as "the world's first cosmic opera" (in its performance incarnation), and attempts to sonically answer the question as to what exactly happens when we cross that fateful event horizon, in ambitious, live-jam-born-recorded form. Via eight cosmic suites of terrifying techno wizardry (we'd expect nothing less from the Belleville 'blazer), Jeff Mills brings his originally live, light-eating vision to vinyl, nailing the cosmick perceptual horror of being "sucked in" through dust-bitten repetitions, descending mind-melts and dissociative-detuned fugues - the latter is most intriguing; 'When Time Stops' is the track of choice for exploring Mills' least repetitious and most improvisatory tendencies.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

The Bells (Blue Potential version) (5:02)
The Homosapien Sapiens (2:46)
Review: For the latest volume in his ongoing retrospective series "The Director's Cut", Jeff Mills has decided to offer us another chance to own his most iconic and celebrated track, "The Bells". All techno heads should know the 1996 original version that kicks off the EP, but if you don't, it's a stomping, heavily percussive romp rich in looped synth stabs and chiming melodies. Here it comes accompanied by the stunning version found on the "Blue Potential" DVD, in which Mills performed live with Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra), and bonus cut "The Homosapien Sapiens", which appears to be a previously unreleased cut. While of interest, it's the version of "The Bells" that make the EP an essential purchase.

Rise (5:43)
The Storyteller (6:40)
Entanglement (5:38)
Review: His adoring but party-focused audience may not always realise it, but Jeff Mills - the Detroit raised, Berlin-based techno icon - never programs a kick drum or hi-hat without some serious thought being put behind it. 'Extension' is apparently the latest in a series that started with 'Growth' in 1994 and continued with 2004 with 'Expanded', under the same concept, namely an attempt to "bring forth the notion that the Future could provide more than what we are doing now." The three tracks begin with the fizzing, watery ambience of 'Rise', kick drums present but somewhat muted, before 'The Storyteller' provides a more traditional 4/4 framework for some genuinely out of this world effects. 'Entanglement' clocks in somewhere between the other two, bubbling away beatlessly, then eased along by ride cymbals until finally a pulsing kick enters the fray over what sound like bleepy Morse code signals being beamed to other planets. More atmospheric than simply downright banging, this is Jeff Mills at his most original.

The Dance Rebellion Starts (8:46)
The Other Maria (5:35)
Freder's Reality Switch (5:35)
Review: As Jeff Mills returns to his third deepest obsession after 909s and UFOs, he presents an addendum to his renewed Metropolis Metropolis soundtrack which doubles down on three of the themes and gives them a different framework through the lens of a 12". This is still the more cinematic end of the Millsian spectrum, but there's some intensity which may well be of use to the more dramatic or daring techno DJ. 'The Dance Rebellion Starts' is plenty loopy and disorienting, full of interwoven, clangorous patterns which should stay nicely in time if you get them locked in the mix. 'The Other Maria' might well be the star of the show though, a nightmarish, ever-building drone piece with some half-time percussion stalking around the edges for guidance. 'Freder's Reality Switch' completes the picture with a slightly more stable synths n' strings piece, but there's still that innate sense of otherness Mills always threads into his work.

Review: Star Chronicles: Orion may sound to some like a straight to video sequel to a shoddy B-movie consigned to the depths of history, but it is in fact the first instalment of latest project from Detroit techno visionary Jeff Mills. Taking its inspiration from the constellation Orion, the EP moves through six untitled tracks of stripped down, futuristic techno with distinct sci-fi leanings. Opening with what sounds like a series of radio transmissions from a distant nebula, the record soon launches into life with a 4/4 kick drum holding together its interstellar frequencies, whilst the third track combines brittle percussion with bass heavy synth oscillations. The B-Side begins with a track of hypnotic wormhole techno, whose wobbling monophonic synth line creates the impression of a distant distress signal at the heart of a far off galaxy; this is followed by a beatless track which recalls early bleep techno, contrasted with strings and keys that evoke library music oddities, whilst the EP is closed with a short track with aquatic Drexciyan undertones. An audacious concept, but in the hands of a master like Mills, the extraterrestrial sounds evoke some striking imagery. Highly recommended.

Track 4
Review: The opening track on Taken is a piece of hypnotic, deep techno from one of the genre's pioneers, showing that Jeff Mills can still knock out some fantastic music. An all-encompassing rhythm structure drives the track along as subtle pads gently trample over a rock solid beat. We hit more traditional techno territory with the second track, a relentless attack on the senses with an almost inescapable sense of dread pervading throughout. The third cut takes us on a deep space exploration into sound, with robotic bleeps dancing through an unnerving series of textures and pads. The percussion and kick-drum take a back seat as Mills allows his depiction of the future to make the rhythm move. The intensity grows with each passing second making this another track that simply won't let go. The EP closes out with "Track Four" and another piece of Videodrome, nightmare techno. You'll be falling through a black hole as clocks whir backwards all around, and visions of your past wrongdoings flash in front of your eyes. This final cut keeps you spiralling down into the deepest pits of human despair until there is nothing left but your mind and a guilty conscious. Highly recommended.

Review: Since launching Something In The Sky as an offshoot of his Axis label in 2009, Jeff Mills has used it sparingly. Yet its releases are among his best. Giving him license to fully explore his obsession with space and techno's intergalactic boundaries, his contributions to the label's discography usually sound like they've been beamed in from a satellite broadcasting classic 1980s Detroit techno experiments. That's certainly the case here. The four untitled tracks bubble and pulse menacingly, offering spacious synths, hypnotic rhythms and more alien electronic noises than your average episode of Star Trek. Being Mills, each of these blasts-from-the-past come loaded with bittersweet machine soul, making them brilliant DJ tools.

Review: The classic album that first truly broke Jeff Mills into Europe 20 years ago gets a 21st century snazzing-up, and it's remarkable upon re-listening just what breadth there is to the earliest of the Detroit hero's output. With some sly shuffling of the running order, nothing can prepare you for the switch from visceral intensity of "Jerical" to the piano-led stompathon "Changes Of Life". The complexity within Mills' production is staggering for the time, as frantic, interlocking pulses of rhythm come daggering out of his machines. Still it's the more accessible cuts such as "Late Night" that should find favour with DJs new to the Purpose Maker's ways.

Review: Another one from the Tresor vault - this one dates back to 1994. Once again it's Sir Jeff at his unrelenting best, bringing his Detroit influences to the nascent post-wall Berlin techno scene, and once again the BPMs hit the heart attack zone. If you want an idea of what those parties were like in the vaults of the old Wertheim department store, just listen to "Whisper" or "Basic Human Design" and you'll start to get an idea of how amazing this scene actually was. Mills, we salute you. This is one for the ages.

Review: Sir Jeff returns with this sampler 12" featuring highlights from his recent album The Power, released on his own Axis Records imprint. Exploring a similar, albeit slightly denser, sonic terrain to his recent Something In The Sky releases, A Side tracks "Microbe" and "The Exchange" are imbued with tense loops and an almost overwhelming sense of intangible menace. Flip over for the stunning, hypnotic chiming melody of "Spiral Therepy" - backed by a beat so delicate and fragile you have to really listen to realise it's actually there. The beats disappear entirely on "The Diagnosis", leaving ghostly echoes and synth washes to tiptoe cautiously across the bleak sonic landscape. A supreme exploration of restraint from one of electronic music's most relentlessly forward-thinking characters.

Review: Techno deity, Jeff Mills, returns with his latest array of goodies for his own Purpose Maker imprint. "Transport" gets things rolling with a typically-Millsian Detroit techno bubbler, with percolating synths, deep bass, and crisp beats all working the floors nicely. On the reverse, "Kat Lick" goes for a tougher, more analog techno workout, with driving beats and synths topping a rumbling bassline. "The Clairvoyant" completes the trio with layered drum patterns, filtered synths, and a rich techno bassline blending into a lush late night techno gem.

Review: Jeff Mills' Something In The Sky series started when the Detroit veteran noticed a distinct lack of functional records on the market, namely 12"s that could be manipulated by adventurous DJs keen to modify basic grooves into their own unique DJ sets. Thus the SITS releases have hallmarked by sparse, stripped back 909s, shuffling hi-hats and eerie atmospherics, while the artwork points to Mills' affinity for extra terrestrial life. Simply put, yet another essential addition to the collection of any Mills completist or techno DJ with a sense of artistry.

Review: The "Man From Tomorrow" presents a concept and soundtrack album to Fritz Lang's hugely influential silent film, "Metropolis". This album is an "electronic composition", with its purpose to be heard while watching the 1926 masterpiece. Mills' own mastery of the sound of the future excellently matches Lang's master vision of the Utopian Dream: narrative, passionate, and timeless. The future of electronic music is now. Listen to it and understand why Jeff Mills is know as the best techno producer in the world.
