Review: Techstep pioneer Trace smashes into 2021 with something the world has waited almost 30 years for... His debut artist album. 10 tracks heavy in its digital form, here we grab six of the best tracks from Retox on clear vinyl and it's safe to say the wait's been worth it. Highlights include the No U-Turn style breaks-meets-Gremlinz-style halftime switches on 'Dark 8', the jazzy drum swing of 'Saboteur' and the grizzly hurricane of a title track which hits all the sweet spots both Virus and his own DSCi4 label hit the best. He's been back for a while but this galvanizes his return and reminds us just how much he helped shape drum & bass.

Review: Alix Perez rallies up the troops once again for another smouldering selection of futurism from a truly all-star cast ranging from Tsuruda to Bredren. Playfully writhing amid that dark but so fertile bass hinterland that joins jungle, hip hop, beats and all shades in between, once again we run the gamut from somnambulant soul (Halogenix's super deep "Trouble") to lively steppy warped D&B (SubMarine's "IWY", Razat's "Simplicity", Monty's "Decisions") by way of the unclassifiable (Alix's switchy swampy beast "Poison Ivy", Deft's "Trips"). And we do say so with that awesome sense of unknown, unease and tension that Alix, his label and his equally innovative affiliates have made themselves known for. Welcome to the future.

Review: Alix Perez's 1985 Music label is a constant source of cutting-edge variations within D&B, and so it continues as Monty delivers his debut album Hit The Lights. The Toulouse-based artist has been blazing a trail since first appearing around 2015, displaying variety and flair in his sound which always hinted at the potential for an incredible album. Now it's finally here, and it doesn't disappoint, veering from the vocal-licked catchiness of 'Vibin' to the exquisitely sculpted dubstep pressure of 'Dreamer' (with Perez himself in tow on the buttons). There's a lot to take in, including guest spots from Chimpo, Eva Mango and Visages, rounding out a mature and accomplished album, just like we always suspected.

Review: Five years already!? Time flies when you're cultivating a community and crew of artists that range from deeply soulful D&B to gutter-chomping 140 business. All kept consistent and at seriously high levels, it's now hard to imagine a bass landscape without the presence of Alix Perez's label. To celebrate the label has put together this neat range of rework vibes over two 12"s. Ranging from the sweet vocal beauty of Break's remix of 'Moving On' to the bubblesome UKG of Sam Binga's remix of 'Melodrama' via Skeppy's 'too rough' take on 'Trinity', it's an exceptional release that highlights how expensive and inclusive 1985 has become. Modern day blueprint business.

Both newcomers and vital vets are all represented here on the third volume, as well as label staples and label newcomers. Numerous styles and tempos are explored from some of bass music's most exciting talents with the likes of Deft opening up with the haunting glitch-step of 'Scars', Alix Perez laying down a soulful roller with 'Blank Pages' and Visages twisting melons with 'Nibiru'. A jam-packed comp for sure.

Review: Visages are a four-strong crew out of Toulouse who fly the flag for a true-school, soundsystem approach to club music. Their drops to date have spanned labels like Flexor Audio, Impact Music and Dispatch Recordings, but since 2020 they've been building something formidable with Alix Perez's 1985 Music label. Now this build up culminates in the knockout From Lead To Gold, a masterful long player of hard-hitting steppers and snaking d&b workouts which will have seasoned heads and new listeners alike getting giddy. Perez himself lends a hand on 'Black Katana' but really the achievement is all in the hands of these four talented up and comers.

Review: After spending eight years showcasing his wares on labels including System Music, Sector 7 Sounds and Coyote Records, deep bass music specialist Drone is ready to unveil his debut album, 'Dance With The Devil'. In keeping with his boundary-blurring approach, the 13-track set presents tracks that variously draw influence from deep dubstep, grime, electro, skwee and d&b. It's a hugely atmospheric and - it should be noted - on-point affair, with Drone being joined by a host of well-regarded collaborators including Snowy, Alix Perez, Hyroglifics, Deft and Elm. Our picks of a strong bunch include the skittish, clandestine 140 business of 'Swamp', the dubby trip-hop/deep soul of 'Ski Mask' and the breathless electro-goes-d&b flex of 'Jugtown'.

Monty - "Tribes" (5:14)
Review: This expansive, DJ-friendly, triple-pack from Alix Perez's 1985 Music label was apparently designed as both a "statement of intent" and a snapshot of some of the producer/label boss's favourite artists "operating around the 85 BPM/170 BPM axis". That means that while the album contains a string of scorching, experimentally minded D&B floor-slayers - see Perez and Fracture's insatiable "Archetyp", Sabre's luscious liquid roller "Holy Water" and the heavyweight, industrial-tinged dubstep/D&B hybrid that is "Tribes" by Monty - there are almost as many blazed, bass-heavy cuts that operate at a much more sedate tempo. These include a number of compilation standouts, such as the skewed but exotic instrumental hip-hop bounce of Ivy Lab's remix of Epsom's "Oksana" and the dub-wise, deep space beats of "Around" by Deft.

Review: Perez signs out the summer with one of his biggest releases since launching 1985: 'Without End'. A mini-LP, comprising collaborations with some of his closest allies and kindred spirits (Workforce, Halogenix, Liam Bailey), across the eight tracks Alix takes us down some of his oldest pathways... Deep, barbed soul, restrained in delivered, unhurried in pace and oozing space; these are the roots from which Perez has grown. His dubstep, his twisted Shades material with Eprom, his distinctive designs and artwork on his label, the talent he's brought through... And everything in between.

As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electro funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: One of bass culture's biggest albums of 2023 finally sees the light of wax as 1991 proudly presents his debut album Odyssey. While best known within the realms of drum & bass, here the young UK artist is given space to spread his musical wings and showcase how broad his style and influences are. From the Justice-flavoured title track to the bumping Zinc-style bass house slammer 'Life' via the breath-taking progressive breaks of 'Who Hurt You', 1991 digs deep across the spectrum and joins dots between often disparate musical worlds through the lens of contemporary D&B. An exceptional and very positive debut album.

Highlights can be found on every track including the seasick swoons of Sinistarr's "#Accidental Deathing", Havelock's gully-galvanised juke stepper "Badbwoysound" and the tumbling, cascading almost drunken drum arrangement of Phazz's "Caution". Welcome to the future.

Review: London Sound is the latest album from multi-platinum selling drum & bass duo Sigma. The album is a full-circle encapsulation of everything that's brought the pair to the present moment; featuring an array of drum & bass anthems, including 'Adrenaline Rush' featuring singer Morgan, the album radiates Joe and Cam's love for music creation for dark dancefloors and pop radio alike, and for completely ignoring any boundaries or hierarchies placed in their way. Speaking about the album, Sigma say: "London Sound - this album feels like a homecoming to us. We spent our early years in clubs all around London, soaking in the music, the culture and the energy. This album takes influence from those times as well as us being able to make a fully drum & bass project for the first time since 2015. London Sound feels like the album we've been waiting to release."

Review: London-based producer Otik releases his first album Cosmosis on Martyn's label 3024. The 11-track LP signifies the fourth album on the imprint across its ten-year tenure, showcasing a more introspective side to Otik's musical output. The album leans into delicate melodies, hazy atmospheres and lush analogue sounds, often evoking blissed-out feels and ripples of brilliant colour. Produced three years ago during lockdown, Cosmosis comes after a period of spiritual struggles, where Otik questioned his faith, religious beliefs, and the concepts of right and wrong. While the pandemic allowed ample time for reflection, Otik translated these thoughts into music from his Peckham-based studio, later finding a home on 3024's evolving discography. Keen to release a body of work that explores the journey of enlightenment and the struggles to get there, Otik drew inspiration from the luminary filmmaker Terrence Malick and how Malick portrayed ideas and philosophies in films like The Tree of Life and Voyage of Time. As a result, the record conveys a compelling narrative of rebirth, told through exquisite sound design and a push-pull pace that oscillates across the album.

Review: Three years in the making; 7th Storey proudly present the stark, twisted foundation-setting work of Mark Loy under his Jungle Buddha guise. Originally released in 1993 on Poetic Justice, the originals have been excavated from DAT, mastered, restored and cut back to wax in all their OG jungle tekno glory. Chaotic, rough, ready and riddled with prang aesthetics to make an army of rudeboys run for miles, this is still sounding decades ahead of where we are right now. A serious artefact.

Review: Ludvig Cimbrelius has many different aliases to exercise different musical interests, but his work as Illuvia really stands out thanks to its canny blend of jungle and electronica with ambient. Following plentiful digital releases for labels like Hypnus, this marks the first outing on vinyl for Illuvia, finding a natural home on A Strangely Isolated Place. The combination of raging but artfully submerged breakbeats and expansive drone pads is expertly managed here, sounding at once glacial and furiously kinetic. Like the concept of atmospheric jungle taken to the extreme, this is a unique approach to genre fusion that works beautifully.

Review: This year marks three decades since the launch of Rage, the weekly London club night that not only made Fabio and Grooverider stars, but also proved hugely influential in the development of hardcore and jungle. To celebrate, the long-serving DJ duo is offering up an epic compilation of Rage favourites split over four double albums. Part One offers a great introduction to the series, flitting between familiar favourites (the throbbing, bass-heavy Dub of Leftfield's "Not Forgotten", Lennie De Ice's hardcore anthem "We Are I.E"), lesser celebrated gems (the dreamy deep house of One Tribe's "Is This All"), proto-jungle classics (Wots My Code's sub-heavy, bleep-sporting "Dubplate", Foul Play's lusciously hazy "Being With You") and genuine rude boy smashers (Noise Factory's "The Future").

Review: ***B-STOCK: Records ever so slightly warped with slight surface marks, also creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Deep in the trenches of the acid house revolution, Fabio & Grooverider were experimenting with a darker blend of sonics week in, week out at Rage, one of the UK's formative acid house nights. Detroit and Belgian techno, US house, UK breakbeats, hip-house, Sheffield bleeps were all in the mixing pot as they started to pioneer a sound that would eventually become jungle. Celebrating 30 years since this seminal event, they've curated a series of albums that join the dots between the movement's cornerstones. From Frankie Bones' "Just As Long As I Got You" (from his fabled Bonesbreaks series) to the much darker side of Balearic king Nightmares On Wax in the form of "Aftermath", these are some of the many key records Fabio & Grooverider dug for to create a culture that's just as strong now as it was when it began 30 years ago. One of a four part series, each one is a keeper.

Review: Perhaps the spiritual successor of the Rage LP that made waves several years back, 'Generation Liquid' is a new series of compilations of soulful drum & bass tracks curated by Fabio, one of the pioneers and godparents of the genre. The 12" celebrates the legacy of his Speed, Swerve, and Liquid Funk events, and channels the spirit of his radio shows, collating works from Marcus Intalex, High Contrast, D Kay, and more. The mood of the compilation is unmistakable, and not one usually trodden in the world of nostalgic drum & bass reissues, with most of these tracks consisting of radio-ready emoters of the more polished kind, rather than the 'realist', 'raw' favourite of the day, liquid jungle.

Review: After the success of the first volume, Fabio returns to curate a second round of Generation Liquid featuring the absolute pinnacle of the liquid d&b sound. As a genre which gave rise to a tidal wave of imitators and formula followers, it takes the authority of a legend like Fabio to sift through and present the real deal, whether it's widely hailed classics or hidden treasures that help paint the picture. Soulful, uplifting and driven by d&b's relentless energy, this is another testament to liquid's vital role in the story of breakbeat evolution, featuring legends aplenty from High Contrast to Calibre, DJ Marky to Alix Perez.

Review: Broken soul pioneers Dego & Domu reunite for a collection of pieces that both dig into a very particular time in jungle history while remaining very much contemporary and futuristic. Across Anachronistic the duo imagine an alternative 1997 - a point in drum & bass history where the technical and experimental aspects were at an exciting peak and had become artforms unto themselves - and write modern songs as if that approach were still in place. The result is an exciting range of ideas and dynamics that range from sci-fi disco scutters like 'Idiom' (where the clipped synth notes are chopped on every shard of breakbeat) to almost cute, riffy game-like halftime tracks like 'Filigree' to all-out acid hardcore like the title track itself. Tapping into the Detroit roots just as much as London's, there's a timelessness to this that transcends the typical futurist or nostalgic tropes a lot of concept albums come with. Vinyl only, too. Grab it while you can.

Review: 21 years later... One of Reinforced Records' strongest and most consistent artists during the mid-late 90s Colin Lindo returns with another adventure around The Ninth Level. His first journey to that mythical level was in 1999 and was a key record in that heavy, boundary-breaking late 90s technological surge. Now we're taken for a return with this collection of unreleased tracks and dubs. Ranging from the swinging jazzy whirls of "The Get Down" to the rasping, interstellar rocket fuel reeses of "First Contact" by way of the exfoliating breakbeat thrust of "Formants", it's another timeless trip from Lindo and AKO. Level up!

Taking off where the Unknown Elements series left us, the album brings together AKO affiliates and like minds to form a who's who in jungle in 2018. Review: It's been a fair old while since Dennis "Dego" McFarlane last donned the Tek9 alias, a solo pseudonym he first used in 1991 on the bass-heavy, Bleep and hardcore influenced weightiness of "Kingdom Of Dub". This album - his first under the name since 1999's jazzy and downtempo "Simply" - is not entirely new, but all of the music is previously unreleased. The tracks were produced at various points between 1995 and 2019 and mostly offer warm, melodious, funk-fuelled takes on jungle and drum and bass rich in bustling basslines, snare-heavy beats, jazz-funk chords (something that has long been a feature of McFarlane's work) and picturesque melodies. There are some heavier, rougher and more ragga-influenced cuts present, but the prevailing vibe is warm and positive.

Vintage: Lost Jams From 92-95 is a collection of VIPs, unreleased tunes and a special remix from Tom and Jerry. Presented with the original vinyl artwork on black wax this is a real history lesson that any drum & bass fan needs in their life. Opener 'Nine & Fifty' is a flurry of drums and ping sub bass to get things going in fine style and from there things never let up. That said, next to the floor-facing rollers, there is also a couple of atmospheric interludes that give you room to breathe.

'Ilk Hummer' is another one that shows off this producer's knack for cinematic soundscapes as well as dance floor beats.
