Burning Babylon (4:53)
Empty Words (4:31)
Review: Appearing on a rather gorgeous blue marbled vinyl 12", 'Burning Babylon' is long-serving D&B producer Alix Perez's first outing of 2021. It's rather good too, with the title track offering a clandestine, charred and mind-altering blend of fuzz-soaked rave riffs, bowel-bothering sub-bass, hot-stepping D&B beats and vintage reggae vocal samples. The moody, warped heaviness continues on flipside 'Empty Words', where R&B style vocal snippets periodically pop up above ghostly chords, experimental jungle beats, growling riffs and more wobbling, bassbin-damaging sub-bass. Both tracks are moodier and a little more aggressive than some of his older outings, but that's no criticism: what's on offer is genuinely excellent.

Review: More previously unrelease gold from the Blueskin Badger camp! Omni Trio don Rob Haigh and Syko dig deep into the vault and dust off these three gems: 'Dead Centre' lifts off with a soulful charm years ahead of its time. Big brushed breaks and Rhodes from here to Valhalla. 'Compulsion' is a big pile driver of a track with a rolling technoid twist. Last but not least 'Nautilus' sends us off packing on deep low-tempo jazzy number, the likes of which wouldn't have gone a miss on K&D sessions.

Review: 'Ruthless In Purpose: Insidious In Design'... Just in the title alone you know the Odysee captain means business with these three tracks. Lavish is their cinematic feel and brazen organic drum tones and textures; each cut gets darker as we creep around in the jazzy 3am shadows of the title track, we're pranged out by the minimalism and stark spikes of 'Provocateur' before doing the running man all the way home to the heavier, more curmudgeonly design and purpose of 'Status Anxiety'. Ruthless, insidious and seriously authentic jungle.

Review: Man of many aliases Felix Raeithel (AKA Error 23, AKA Jungle Youth AKA Toy Boy AKA Bass Buuccanier to name a few alter egos) returns to one of his earliest releases - 1997's 'Inner City Fear'. A noxious, off-kilter cut-fest of breaks and sublime reggae samples, it still sounds way ahead of its time to this day and now it's been turbo-charged with a whole slew of new reboots. Fellow German experimental kindred spirit Terrorrythmus gets jiggy with it, Polish breakbeat mutants We Rob Rave get completely freaky with it while Dutch contemporary junglist FFF gets dubby with it, signing out with a deeper, meditative vibe. What an update.

Guilty (feat Catching Cairo) (4:32)
Kanjiru (4:35)
Review: Critical Music has always operated in its own unique niche within the drum & bass world, and label founder Kasra's own output has been largely responsible for that. This cheeky new 10" is a real heart-wrecher. The drums are sleek and minimal, rubbery and kinetic and make for a seductive groove that is embellished with super soulful vocals from Catching Cairo. On the flip side is a much more dark and deadly stepper: crunchy breaks get you moving and monstrous bass sprays about the mix with real menace. A brilliant two tracker with very different tunes on each side.

Who's Tony? (4:50)
Headstuck (6:28)
Review: Yung Cuzzie makes his debut on Dead Man's Chest's Western Lore with two brisk hardcore homages. 'Who's Tony?' poses questions your dancing shoes are too busy to answers. All sweeping breaks, breathy vocals then a sudden switch into classic ravey stabs, by the breakdown you don't even care who Tony is any more. 'Headstuck' follows a similar suit but with more of a windswept, Future Sound Of London vibe but with turbo charged stabs that transition into some hyper mode 92 flavoured beast. Both cuts super frosty and delicious... They're great, as one famous Tony might say.

Valley Of The Shadows (long Dark remix) (4:43)
Review: If we're going to talk about seminal jungle records they don't come much more important than this one, right? Origin Unknown, aka Andy C and Ant Miles, defined a new darkside direction for breakbeat hardcore and jungle when they committed 'Valley Of The Shadows' to wax. The iconic samples, the looming sub bass, the tight as you like break edits - it's just the perfect track. Most people forget it was originally paired up with another tune though, and 'The Touch' deserves some praise too. It feels more in line with the general wave of hardcore that was prevalent when the record dropped in 1993, not least thanks to the gnarly synth lines and vocal slices, but it's still a totem of the genre at its best. Remastered, repressed and ready to destroy the rave all over again.

Luis Pitti - "Back To The Beginning 2.0" (6:10)
Review: Bennasar and Luis Pitti take care of two tracks each on this split EP for Hardcore finalists that takes you all the way back. The rude boy old school sounds abound from the off with Bennasar's 'My House' working a hip house vocal into a high speed breakbeat. The big rave stabs will always get monster reactions, while 'Raggamuffin DJ' is another dark but enticing drum workout with crashing hits and turbo-charged stabs. Luis Pitti's 'Rhythm Code' keeps the vibes alive with high-energy jungle sounds and machine-gun synths then rounds things out with 'Back To The Beginning 2.0.' It's the darkest of the lot.

Review: Where were we in 93? Probably in a field dancing to seminal cuts like this game-changing record from DJ Pulse and Wax Doctor's Bounty Killaz project. One of the earliest Creative Wax releases, across three tracks the duo map out exactly where the music was... And where it was heading. 'Brighter Future' had the heavy hardcore flavour with the 4x4s and breaks that the likes of Jack Smooth pioneered, 'Bounty Killaz' is pure ice with sheets of 27 Gun Badboy style dubby breaks while 'Voices' finishes the EP with a very astute forecast of where jungle would head a year or two later. Pivotal sounds.

Review: Holding Hands have always hinted at an inner jungle spirit with their freeform releases and penchant for broken beats and heavy atmospheres, but this is the first time they've pushed the tempo up this far... And it's a very special record to celebrate the moment with. Introducing Ocean Stirs, who you might recognise as Tom Jarmey with releases on the likes of Lobster Theremin and Banoffee Pies. Now armed with a new alias he goes in deep on this icy, jittery drum & bass explorations. All nodding at the headsier, cosmic side of Moving Shadow or the early sounds of Justice or Dextrous's Solid State project, highlights range from the wonderfully spacious dubby bounce of 'Hollow' to the almost electro-like rattles and echoes of 'Nocturnal'. Stir it up.

It was the start of an epic ride and it kicks off kicks off a new series of retrospective releases to make the label's 30th anniversary celebrations. This sizzling six track EP has it all - hardcore, piano laced jungle with super sweet soul samples, rave collisions that are dark and dirty with devastating bass and techno-tinged drum workouts that leave you feeling utterly breathless. Our pick is the pure rush of joy and euphoria that is 'Straight From The Heart' with its mega pianos and unbridled vocal energy.

Review: Woi and indeed oi, V return to their vinyl-only Legends series where they dig deep into the vaults and pull out key dubplates that never saw the official release light of day. Key dubplates like these two big Bristol bruisers from DJ Die. Both written in 96, Die's Full Cycle rawness and innate sense of groovemanship is present and correct on both sides - the jazzier, busier work-out 'Capers' and the heavier, stripped-back 'Inside' which you can imagine was made in response to some of the game-changing sounds Krust was making at the time. Legendary business.

Review: The legendary Fokuz label outta the Netherlands hits a 110th release and opts for a selection of remixes from various artists. AirK & Cephei open up with 'Desire,' a slick roller with booming bass and epic synths. Break then comes through with tight remix of A2 Soligen & Type 2 's 'Can't Go' complete with expertly design hits. Break then goes it alone on the original 'Coming 4U' with its low end oscillations and closes out the EP back in remix mode. His take on 'What Are You' is a roaming, textural affair with twisted leads and flurries of toms.

Review: Loxy & Ink on R&S... This is a major moment right here and the music backs it up in every possible way. 'Manifested Visions' brings a bit of old school UK hip-hop flavour as both men touch mic and deliver fire lyrically as well as beat-wise. Deeper into the EP we're pummelled with turbine jungle on 'Phoenix Rising', we're tripped out by wild beat designs on 'Give Me A Dubplate' (with Resound), and soulfully soothed on 'Embrace The Meaning'. Last but not least 'Get Back Up' (with Tha Lion) brings everything back to the source as we close on a rootsical tip. The full spectrum.

Both cuts echoing with the heritage and legacy of nights like Speed and labels Good Looking, these were part of the building blocks of what is now known as liquid. 'Chasing Rainbows' hits with a soft jazzy touch and some deliciously broad and splashy drums while 'Airstream' fixes our focus on the edits and the break-craft but carries us on a bed of dreamy pads and chords. 24 years later and they still sound completely relevant and exciting.

The warped synths and jumping bass of 'Pulse Fiesta' open in visceral fashion. It's a big, booming cut for lively dance floor workouts. The subtle arrival of an acidic, turbocharged synth line adds fuel to the jungle breaks of 'Acid Tool' that will ensure it cannot fail to go off, then 'Not To Be (Rude)' blows minds with its dense jungle drums and percussion and lithe synth work. Closer 'The Slip' is a dark, face screwing and brain-melting monster.

Opener 'Exoplanet' features Dev/Null and is a big intergalactic opener with sled cosmic melodies. 'Searching' gets deeper, with heart melting chords and a soulful vocal giving the tune real heart. On to the flip and 'Can't Get Enuff' is a fresh vibe with skittish synths darting about the mix, a big spin back and some seriously lumpy old school breaks rattling the walls. Closer 'Swamps & Marshes' ends this high octane EP on a futuristic tip that barrels forwards relentlessly.

Review: Destination Finland: Resound returns to Straight Up Breakbeat with three proper punishers and a remix. 'Hidden' takes the lead and sets the scene with its pulsating technoid bassline and super-chiselled 45 King rim shot breaks. It's backed by 'Sapiens' which nods towards the late 90s Virus sound but with added 21st century tension and paranoia and 'Monomial' which brings down the intensity with a deep introspective vibe and a purring harmonic bassline. For added heftiness check fellow Finland artist ESC's remix of 'Deus'. The original, created under Resound's experimental alias, was already a pulsating piece of urgency. Now with added breakage and sudden twists, it's even more hectic. Massiveness as always from both Resound and Straight Up Breakbeat. .

Night Prowler (with Inja - Alibi remix) (4:53)
Review: Brazilian badboy L Side gets the remix treatment from some exceptional names in drum & bass right here on V Recordings. Break sets the benchmark once again with the already stunning 'High Times' with Fats. Dogger & Mindstate make the soulful Manchester connection on the DRS-fronted 'No Sound' while Alibi turn 'Night Prowler' into a disturbingly dark shock-out. But most importantly, we have one of Spirit's last ever productions here with his remix of 'Spellbound'. Made not long before he passed in 2018, it hits just as sharp and forthright as he always did. Rest in peace.
