Review: The fledgling Detach label continues to show it means business with a new 12" in a lovely screen-printed sleeve. Romanian artist Dyl is the one in charge and has been serving up consistently excellent and innovative sounds now for serval years. All of these cuts mix up great sound design with languid rhythms - the first is eerie, with watery droplets and glassy tinkles hanging in the air, while 'Glasshouse 2' has a percolating rhythm down low. 'Glasshouse 3' gets a little more dynamic with a shimmering low end and freaky abstract life forms and 'Glasshouse 4' layers in more intense and ever-shifting synth lines while the closer sounds like it's roaming through a deserted factory long after it shut down.

The El B remix brings fleshier low ends and more swagger and shuffle while the vocals remain in place to blow up your spot. Given that his last new full-length landed four years ago, the arrival of Dostrotime has got an awful lot of experimentalists in a bit of a lather. It's an EP inspired by the sound of the English club scene in the nineties and noughties, labels like Good Looking Records and artists such as Mike Millrain. Opener 'Losin Control' sure is a compelling mix of electro and breaks that soars on cosmic lines with euphoric vocals in the distance. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Here he finally brings his brand of simmering, soulful and emotion-rich drum & bass to vinyl for the very first time. The original press of 'Afterglow', arguably one of the most important songs to galvanize drum n' bass as a truly Top-40-worthy style for the 2010s, has long been out of print. Review: Bristol jungle lynchpin Dead Man's Chest is usually found steering the good ship Western Lore, but back in 2017 he did a series of drops for Ingredients billed as Trilogy Dubs. Originally available on the label's Bandcamp site, now the first volume is pressed up on 10" for some deck-based air time. 'Tears (Fantazia Version)' on the A-side leads with a sad-eyed r&b sample and some lingering piano, but when the drop comes its pure Reese power with a slant towards d&b rather than the jungle DMC's more commonly associated with. 'Rinsa' on the flip is a rowdy slice of Mentasm trickery - the perfect counterpoint to the lead track's solemn vibe.

'Ready' is first up from the eponymous production team and it layers a Fugees vocal over a flurry of breakbeats and ragga vocals with a monstrous bassline powering it along. Carnage. 'Slippers' then flips the script completely mid-tune as a stoned dub gets spun back and flipped into another all-out raga jungle assault with an Underworld sample dropped in along the way.

Review: Italian producer Donato Dozy rightly has a cult following as he has a fantastically well sculpted style whether making ambient deep techno or as is the case here, drum & bass. He opens up with the pulsing loops of 'Mai', which always hints as some sort of big rhythmic explosion that never quite comes. 'Dusty Bones' is a flurry of sci-fi sounds, tribal drums and frosted bass that leaves you in a spin. 'Sanza High' is a DJ Python style half stepper with menacing bass and 'Tao' is a more traditional drum & bass beat with trademark silky synths.

Review: What happens if you take a big vocal sample and drop it over a rinsing, old school jungle break beat? The first tune here, 'Opus III', that's what. It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Flip it over and you'll find something just as divisive - another clattering jungle tune filled with kinetic kicks and flurries of snare, and once more a well-known vocal from Whamdo Project's 'Kings Of The Castle.'

Review: Serious history business: 'Some Justice' was the first time Micky Finn and Aphrodite joined forces and launched a partnership that would change drum & bass history. Prior to them linking, Urban Shakedown comprised of Aphrodite and Claudio Giussani who had a run of fantastically euphoric hardcore crossover records during that golden rave era. 'Some Justice' landed in 91 and the instantly goosebumping vocal cut 'Burnin' Passion' landed in 93. Both of them enjoyed these touch-ups in 94, which still sound fantastic today. Feel the burn.

Review: Fokuz Recordings has been one of the leading drum & bass labels in the Netherlands for some time. Now well into triple figures when it comes to catalogue numbers, the label is still turning out interesting sounds as evidenced by this new purple-marbled 12" from Spearhead bossman BCEE. There is a beauty in the way ever so delicate one-finger piano notes are draped over the relentless bass of opener 'Alpha' that soon wins you over. 'Dogs Behaving Badly' is deeper, more soulful, more tender and insular and then 'Days Like These' is a fluid roller with well-treated string sounds before 'Overleaf' layers dub vibes with jump-up drum goodness.

Review: Presha's debut EP RATS gets pulled apart and restructured by a crack squad of drum & bass talents on this fresh new red 12" from Samurai Music. Up first, 'The Spell' (Artilect remix) is a mix of heavy drum breaks and paranoid synth lines snaking about the background. Sam KDC's remix is another dark one with double time drums and drilling bass. The Untouchables remix keep it funky with their lolling loops and icy hi hats and the Last Life remix of 'Vedetta' goes for a textured, industrial vibe to make its mark in a blackened warehouse.

Review: Planet Euphorique is back in business for a fourth volume in the on going Tiny planet series. It is an always interesting various artists collection that offers a widescreen take on tech house and minimal. Emkay keeps it deep, bubbly, pumping on the opener 'Dennis' then things get more wonky and tripped out with Eversines & RDS's 'Milky Mouse.' On the flip side is ZDBT & DJ Vendetta's electro-tech fusion 'Tie Me Up' with its sleazy vocals and hyper speed rhythms and Byron Yeates & Brandi then closes out with another swaggering ghetto vibe on the fresh sounding 'Activate.'

Review: This might be a new Metalheadz 12" but it has a throwback, vintage feel to it. Part of that is no doubt because of the three legendary artists it involves in Ink, Loxy & Resound. Loxy & Ink go first and serve up the superbly space-age sounds this label has always been known for on 'Irrelevant'. On the flipside, things get a little darker. Resound joins the fray for 'Token' and sinister sounds and menacing bass prevail. These are ageless tunes that will unite new and old heads alike. Essential stuff from the ever-green Metalheadz.

Review: SB81 first appeared on Metalheadz back in 2013 with the Dancer In The Dark / Back To 33 12, and since then the Wolverhampton mainstay has kept up cosy relations with Goldie's D&B temple. Picking up where 2018's Future Point EP left off, SB81 goes in on four detailed, cinematic cuts that show how much space for world-building there really is around razor-sharp breakbeats. 'Picture This' is drenched in dramatic poise, while the beats fall more like crunchy electronica than run of the mill D&B. 'Etched Within' has a sweeter demeanour, but it's no less richly rendered. The production and composition are absolutely next level throughout this record, proving SB81 is still in a league of his own, and that Metalheadz still know how to sign a deadly record.

Review: Bournemouth institution Drumfunk launch a brand new foundation-flavoured imprint Junglefunk. Bossman Judda takes the lead with a hardcore jungle edge. 'Damn Right!' is a concentrated headbutt of hardcore elements tightly wrapped up in a positive affirmation; big detuned stabs, rusty breaks and hypey vocal samples. 'Let Me Tell U' touches more on the ravey elements with pitched up vocals and more focus on the riff. Damn good.

Review: As if Marcus Intalex and ST Files' M.I.S.T project wasn't quite enough soul power back in the 2000s, along came the eminent Dominick Martin, adding a big 'Cal' at the end. There's a wealth of material from the trio out there, a lot of which hasn't been digitised, and, as you'd expect from such a trio, the tracks haven't dated in the slightest. Both 'Just A Little Herb' and 'Memory Log' still soothe the soul with 170BPM charm. The former celebrates the sticky stuff with shimmering skanks and happy-slapping Amens while the latter takes you on a cruise around the d&b cosmos. Beautiful. What a reissue. Marcus Intalex RIP!

Review: Coco Bryce's Myor does the damage once again with new artist Pepe. Not a lot of information on Pepe is out there yet but these timeless beats give you more than enough to go on for now: 'Angels' writhes and weaves in a stark percussive ocean of ice before building up into a huge emotional wave in a similar way to Sully when he's jangling his foxiest materials. 'Birdfeed' is a little more sprightly and sun-kissed. Dreamier pads, lighter percussion but still bites hard when it needs to. Le phew!

Review: As the Rasta Vibez label nears its 25th release, the eponymous production outfit take care of this new orange 12", and do not muck about. 'So Mi Like Ii' is a barrage of amen breaks and drilling dub bass. It's overlaid with a flurry of extra drums and perc and has rasta vocals lighting it up even further. A real dancefloor filler. On the flip is the sun-kissed sound of 'Messed Up' with its patios vocals, dembow overtones and hard-edge drums eventually turning into another jungle workout. Killer stuff.

Review: Rua Sound continue to lay down timeless jungle and breakbeat sorcery with this wide-armed set from Russ Brooker. Wrapping up a busy year with releases from the likes of Noroi, Prayer and San, Russ sets his deep space phasers to stun in three vivid ways; '97-99' lives up to its name with an industrial techstep you'd expect from such a title, 'Microfilm' goes for much more of a wild drumfunk vibe while 'Breathe' closes the EP on a slower, dreamier note. Full spectrum vision and textbook delivery, we suspect Russ will be back on Rua in the future.
