Veil/Unveil Issue One
Veil/Unveil Issue One (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: VEILUN 001. Rel: 24 Sep 13

Experimental/Electronic
ASC - "The Noncolour Entity"
Vaccine - "Irradiate"
Sam KDC - "Lovesick"
ASC & Synth Sense - "Glimpse"
Review: Limited to a pressing of just 250 (with a promise of no represses) this clear vinyl release is special in every sense. Powered by some of the most exciting names on the fringes of bass and electronica; each of the four cuts strut with raw melodic futurism. "The Noncolour Entity" rumbles with a dubby techno groove a la Funk D'Void. "Irradiate" comes with an almost Bonobo-like dreaminess while "Lovesick" shakes and shudders with a sub-soaked groove and bright, bold swinging breakbeats. "Glimpse" closes the show on a timeless analogue note. Coming on strong like an old Guy Called Gerald record, it's all synths and classic electro breakbeats. Outstanding.

Loophole
Diffusion Loop (Rumble mix)
Broadside
Ashen
Review: It's been two years since ASC released music on Geoff Presha's Samurai Horo, an experimental offshoot of the New Zealander's main Samurai Music operation. It's ASC's fourth release for the label which finds James Clements spiralling down even further into the nebulous world of Horo, with "Loophole" a perfect example of what the label stands for: unclassifiable drum and bass that sounds like techno. A drone-based "Diffusion Loop (Rumble mix)" is murky with distant breathes of vocals haunting its background while a softly cracking snare hits fills the foreground. "Broadside" is downbeat and full of the similar science-fiction synths that define "Loophole" while "Ashen" sounds like something Samuel Kerridge might make after a night out with dBridge.

Solemnity
Fulcrum
Wave Upon Wave
Lone Star
Review: Auxiliary boss and audio adventurer ASC invites us to get with the "Programme" as he lays down four beautiful compositions that flitter around the idea of concept of drum & bass while remaining wholly unclassifiable and sprung with surprise. "Solemnity" is a beat heavy trip into the cosmos, all crumpled beats and icy textures. "Fulcrum", meanwhile, casts a much dreamier, mesmerising effect thanks to rippling synths and breath-taking washes. "Wave Upon Wave" has a touch of the Vangelis about it; cinematic, wistful and star-gazing, it's full of emotion. "Lone Star" closes the show with the most D&B flavoured track on the EP; the breakbeats cascade delicately in the background while pianos weave in and out of the mix, held in place by ambient pads.

Scope LP Part 4
Cat: HORO 010.4. Rel: 08 Oct 13

Drum & Bass / Jungle
ASC - "Dragnet"
Sam KDC - "Erosion"
Es Tereo & Marlyn - "Cutting You Loose"
Ena - "Dipteran"
Review: Make way for the fourth Scope sampler. Horo's long playing assault on the senses continues with more of electronic music's most adventurous audio conjurers. ASC smelts classic dub dynamics with cinematic motifs and subtle, tricked out amens that whisper in the shadows while Sam KDC's "Erosion" takes directly into haunted steel factory with his industrial echoes and an overwhelming feeling of danger. Further on, the drums on "Cutting You Loose" are so tightly layered and daringly positioned, there's a tangible sense of dizziness. Ena closes the show with the most outer planetary composition of the sampler where a mechanical heartbeat provides consistency in a foggy weave of oppressive atmospheres. Far out.

No Safety Zone
Review: There's something decidedly bleak, almost heartbreakingly sad, about this collaborative album from sometime D&B producers ASC (head honcho of Auxiliary) and Sam KDC. As with ASC's most recent full-length, the steadfastly ambient The Light That Burns Twice As Bright, it's a moody and atmospheric affair, dealing mostly in FX-laden drones, slow-burn melodies and near-endless chords. At times it sounds like a post-modern take on the drifting ambience of Pete Namlook, at others a weary comment on the current state of Western society. Throughout, there's an odd warmth and emotional resonance that belies its introspective approach. Closer "No Safety Zone", for example, seemingly shimmers with toasty warmth.

Review: Amazingly, this is the ninth album from experimental D&B veteran ASC. Those who've followed his career to date should know what to expect; an atmospheric and all-enveloping sound that uses traditional D&B rhythms and structures sparingly, instead flipping between clandestine electronica, IDM and shuffling ambience (see the crackly opener "Spheres", which recalls his recent work with fellow experimentalist Sam KDC on the Decayed Society LP). It's a fusion that delivers real quality, from the late night '90s vibes of "Glass Wall", and guitar-laden Balearica of "Oneironaut", to the beatless beauty of "A Song For Hope", technological grooves of "Prometheus", and glitchy oddness of "Stay True".

Ancestral Voices - "Hypersigil" (6:07)
ASC - "Area Check" (6:07)
Lemna - "Rahu" (6:34)
Sam KDC - "Locus" (5:03)
Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing series of celebratory Decade EPs, Samurai Music has decided to showcase new works by producers known for looking beyond the conventional boundaries of drum and bass. The action kicks off with a wonderfully creepy, feverish and hypnotic workout from Ancestral Voices that abandons traditional D&B tropes in favour of trippy rhythms and an admirable experimental ethos. ASC's thrillingly weighty and industrial-tinged "Area Check" takes a similar approach, while Lemna's "Rahu" - a buzzing and mind-altering excursion - sits somewhere between experimental D&B, slipped dubstep and Livity Sound style off-kilter techno. Sam KDC's "Locus", meanwhile, is the audio equivalent of a hallucinatory trip down the Amazon with only horror movie melodies and slowly intensifying, tribal-tinged rhythms for company.

Ignite (6:08)
Space Echo (6:34)
Reveal (6:55)
Vanium (6:31)
Review: Modern auteur James Clements is back with more fascinating explorations of the grey zone. Starting out with the psychotic acid experiment of "Ignite" it is then business as usual on the title track, with its dark atmospheres and industrial textures contrasted by a belting gabber style beat; it's pretty brilliant. On the flip "Reveal" is another furious 170 BPM experiment, innovative as much as it is utterly confronting, while final track "Vanium" switches to cruise control on this mysteriously bleepy sci-fi epic somewhere between Sahko and the Autonomic sound. Sounds good enough right?

Reform
Review: One of electronic music's most forward thinking minds drops two cerebral cuts of darkly spacious D&B on Autonomic. Following the release of a slew of fine singles and the stunning 2010 long player Nothing Is Certain, ASC's sonic aesthetic is now inexorably linked with the oft-discussed Autonomic sound. Fans have been drooling over the release of these two cuts for a hot minute now, with the languid drums, eerie synths and ethereal vocal snatches in "Reform" slightly edging the more robust tribal rhythms and sub bass of "Starkwood". Brooding stuff from start to finish.

909 Rhythm Track
Review: ASC returns to Samurai, and he's armed with a wide spread. "Polemic" leads, and does so with a sharp-tongued acid stomp. Think Plastikman's "Spastik" but with modern day production values. Pulverisingly dark and stark, it's already found favour with the likes of dBridge and Sam KDC. "Oracle" and "909 Rhythm Track" bring it up the rear; the former pumps with classic Germanic techno tribalism while the latter pings and pongs with 909 delight.
