Timelines Part 1
Cat: NONPLUS 050A. Rel: 15 Nov 19

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Pacific Heights (5:46)
Sakura (6:18)
Photograph (5:45)
End Credits (6:02)
Review: Eight years after their ground-breaking "Resolution 653" full length, pioneering duo Instra:mental make a welcome return with their new album Timelines, and this first selection of tunes from it gives you a good idea why. "Pacific Heights" is a jumble of minimal drum beats and futuristic synth smears that is atmospheric, while "Sakura" is more sparse and zoned out thanks to forlorn chords which speak of romantic pain. Things slow down into deep rubbery rhythms on the lush "Photograph" while "End Credits" has an unexpected Balearic vibe to it, with breezy chords making for a mood that feels akin to gazing out to sea.

Total XTC (Fixate remix) (4:42)
Way Back When (feat Esther Durin - Halogenix remix) (5:07)
Review: Get unstuck with these two delicious refixes from Unglued's debut 2021 album Interplanetary Radio as two of the most highly respected beat carvers apply their scalpels to one of Hospital's most exciting new-generation stars. The ravey 'Total XTC' is perfect fodder for Exit's Fixate as he winds up the 4x4s and laces it with his own special hardcore essence. The super sweet soul of 'Way Back When' is also a perfect fit for its remixer as Halogenix brings a whole new hazy shade to the dreamy vibes. Far out.

Uniformity Of Nature EP
Uniformity Of Nature EP (140 gram clear vinyl 12" in screen-printed PVC sleeve + download card)

Experimental/Electronic
DYL - "Phrases" (4:05)
Senking & DYL - "Destroyed City Lights" (4:57)
DYL - "Words" (4:29)
DYL & DB1 - "Uniformity Of Nature" (5:58)
Senking - "Launch" (4:31)
DYL - "Semantics" (4:05)
Review: Czech label Detach launched back in 2015 with some low key firepower from Moll+, and now they're back with a split release that showcases some fiery upcoming talent in the field of experimental electronica. The sound DYL is exploring on "Phrases" is rabid and deconstructed, but equally bristling with analogue energy. Senking jumps in with DYL for the more rhythmically structured "Destroyed City Lights", which balances sweet and savage tones beautifully. DYL and DB1 create a stern, percussion led variation of electro on "Uniformity Of Nature" and Senking's solo piece "Launch" jettisons off into misty blue pools of synthetic expression, making this a record that surprises and satisfies at every turn.

Everything Is Possible (5:16)
Fly (4:30)
Constant (5:21)
Elevate (4:32)
Review: Following her arrival on the label in January, south coast soulstress SOLAH delivers her first full Hospital EP. Flexing the most musical, shiniest sides of the genre, positive vibes flow from edge to edge as she takes centre stage over a range of sweetly treated beats. 'Everything Is Possible' is all about the big harmonies, 'Fly' is a light, skippy bubbler with LSB style flurries and big subs humming beneath the textures while her arrival track 'Constant' still sparkles like it did back in January before 'Elevate' closes the 12" on a dreamy note. The vocal side of drum & bass has never been as healthy as it is right now.

Happy (Hammond) (4:07)
Happy (Hammond) (instrumental) (3:05)
Happy (Hammond) (bonus beats reprise) (1:43)
Review: Random Rap Records offshoot Dinked 45 has hit gold with 'Happy (Hammond)', the first single in seven years from Chris Read and keyboardist Rob Barron's occasional So Much Soul Players project. As the title suggests, it's a cheeky and cheery Hammond funk reinvention of Pharrell Williams' classic which features Barron playing the famous melody - alongside a few wild solos - atop a sweaty, bass-heavy, breakbeat-driven dancefloor groove. It's a simple idea brilliantly executed all told and a guaranteed party-starter to boot. Over on the flip you'll find a slightly tougher, shorter 'Instrimental Mix' that cuts down the use of the melody in favour of elongated Hammond chords and more prominent beats, as well as a short 'Bonus Beats' drum track for DJs who like to get busy in the mix.

Skatterbox (6:06)
Review: Breakbeat maestro Hooverian Blur returns for Triple Menace, an EP which, as the title suggests, spans choppy breaks and dastardly bleeps-and-bloops for a 2HKO wielding a stylistic drum & bass greatsword. A singular 10" record houses these twin audio-imps, with the titular 'Triple Menace' occupying older-skool junglist territories, and the latter bringing things forward in time to a future-soundsy rave minimalizer.

In The Area (feat Lifford) (4:55)
Citadels (4:50)
Crash Pad (4:45)
Lazy Bones (4:35)
Review: Since signing to Hospital last year Krakota has delivered a progressively on-point stream of rollers and bubblers. Hot on the heels of "Ice Hands" and "Ghosts" comes the Bournemouth artist's first fully fledged EP and it's something of a vibe marathon: "In The Area" soothes with soft harmonic basses in a similar way to early Netsky or perhaps Nu:Logic material, "Citadels" is a floaty, cosmic meander through the jungle milky way. Looking for Krakota's harder side? Look no further than "Crash Pads"; all Experience-era detuned synths and swashbuckling amens, it's undiluted rave juice. Finally "Lazy Bones" brings us back to earth with a piano-shaped cushion... Before packing us off to sub boot camp with some very devious but subtle bass dynamics. Krakota's best release to date, without question.

Booca - "Breath Of My Spirit" (6:21)
DSP - "Just A Touch" (5:56)
Ben Kei - "Desolate" (6:07)
Review: Absolute flames from the Transmute crew as they put together this sweet trippy VA three-piece. Booca takes the lead and sets the tone with "Breath Of My Spirit". Jazzy keys and baggy breaks, there's a lush summery feel running throughout the blend and it's backed by the much more direct and classic sounding jungle of DSP's "Just A Touch". Dalston Chillies' founder Ben Kei closes the EP with the heaviest cut of the set; nasty breaks, evil mentasms and ominous strings. This is war music.

Review: UK Jungle Records continues to set a fine standard with its third EP. It's a various artist affair that kicks off with Simply Dread's old school roller, complete with summery flute lines and old school vocals that bring good time vibes. Omen Breaks then grabs you by the synapses and runs with you down a darkened rabbit hole on "Don Teifion" and Supa Ape brings more celestial and soulful vibes on his widescreen gem "Leviathan". Junglord closes down with "Pabst Blue Ribbon", which is hard hitting and intense.

Review: UK meets Finland meets Poland by way of Germany: Alphacuts have recruited a crack team of forward-thinkers for their latest dispatch. Ridgway pushes the button with a star-lit halftime hybrid that borders on pure trance such is it euphoric width and scope. Deeper again Out Of Fuel provide the most junglistic cut of the EP with echoes of Photek in the drums and spatial dynamic. On the B: Elemental balances an unforgiving experimental aesthetic with a bassline that bounces with London pride and we finalise with Material's DBR-style doomy halftime roller "Tons Dub" that was tailor made for deep mix pleasure. No swift cuts needed here.

Review: German beat mutant Acid Lab dents the discogs on provocative burgeoning imprint AGN7 with four cavernous beasts. All flexing around the Samurai/Metalheadz axis in terms of space and palette, each cut hits hard with authenticity. "Secret Weapon" hits like it's 97 but on a halftime flex. "Unleash" is a savage Rupture level piece of breakbeat chaos. "Shadow Recruit" goes on some cosmic 160 Tipper style elastic bass funk while "Before The Storm" takes you right into it eye then blasts you out with a creepy breakbeat hurricane. Serious tackle, this.

Review: Moscow-based producer Marco Lazovic has scored a few significant releases over the past five years, landing on Lobster Theremin and appearing alongside Minimal Violence on a cassette release back in 2016. After Funkyjaws' opening missive, DJ Craft's Craft Music label has invited Lazovic to throw down his bold and brassy take on soundsystem dynamics in a modern context. This is mellow, melodic music with a hefty bottom end touching on red-lining electro and electronica in equal measure, slipping into ambient jungle territory here and there and overall creating a delightful trip for the mind, body and soul.

Review: 2020 has been a toilet for us all but the sounds of Zero T on labels like Sofa Sound and Metalheadz has been a much needed silver lining. Upping his consistency even more than usual, every release is pure gold... Especially this new one on Lenzman's The North Quarter. "Lonely Night" sets the tone as he remixes Mango & Mathman with soulful style before linking up with old friend Steo for the piano-tickling "Moments Fade". Meanwhile on the B things get much darker and dancefloor-focused; "I Want More" is Zero T is total gully mode while "Clash" is the dubby roller of the set. All flavours, all vibes, one essential 12".

Great title, beautiful sounds as Angel runs the hardcore gauntlet on 2020 blades... Within seconds of the breakbeat kicking in, 'Crystals' will realign your chakras while Diamante gets all floatation tank on you with a subversive downbeat remix. Flip for 'Dance Like A Dolphin', an equally ravey piece of hi-NRG dynamite laced with breaks and surging synths and occasional forays in juicy jungle techno 4x4s before Jay strips everything back to reveal a stern and dubby slice of deep house. Go bananas.

Review: Brought up on a strict diet of vinyl, capable of turning a floor into an en-masse gun-finger at the flip of a dub, Hozzy's jungle-loving nu-breed Unglued sounds like he's about 25 years older than he actually is. Here are four fresh examples of his extraordinary future retro abilities: "Total XTC" takes a hardcore standard and gives it the all essential 2020 bubbler twist, "Got 2 Have" jumps forward about 10 years to BC Recordings and Virus with its bouldering distorted bassline and relentless aggy energy, "War Dance" sees him tagging in fellow Hoz murker Whiney and Manny's finest Truthos Mufasa for another amen-lashed turbine funk jam while the spiralling chaos of "Pigeon Funk" doffs its cap to the late 90s Ram and Formation flavours while remaining fully in the new decade. Time to get sticky.

Luminous (Paradox remix) (9:54)
Review: All bless Synkro and his brand new label Synkro Musik. It rises off into the ether with two more truly startling, stop-what-you-are-doing-and-listen compositions. "Luminous" is a twinkling nod to the autonomic golden age with its layers of textures and rolling sense of momentum and soft urgency. "Weakness" is so much more delicate and emotional. Hazy, mournful and poignant, it's Synkro in stop-what-you-are-doing-and-cry mode. Finally the legend that is Paradox steps up for a beautifully spacious remix that teeters mischievously on his Alaska remit with a touch of Seba to the bounding energy and atmosphere.

Tryptamin (6:19)
Review: Denting the discogs of Repertoire, Samurai and UVB-76 in the last 18 months, Manchester's rising deepsmith Artilect brings new blueprints once again, this time on Horizons. Four cuts heavy, it's nothing but an all out love letter to the drums as we're ricocheted from break to break; "Black Fire" is a dizzying blur of Q&A edits and pranged out spatial textures, "Hoax" is pure bittersweet jungle rollage (think Skitty or Seba when he's in a particularly dark mood), "Deep Signals" flips with a stripped back stepper riddim allowing the atmospheres to blast in and coat the groove with illustrative ice while "Tryptamin" closes the show on the darkest note as shades of dub are added to the mix. Think 4am locked in with Loxy at Rupture and you're down the right rabbit hole.

Review: May the clan wars recommence. Hojo Clan founder Shiken Hanzo returns with four more ghostly, constructs. "White Gorilla Cult" takes the lead, marching into the dense unknown fog, the defiance and sense of suspense building as the journey progresses. "Strategy Of Two Heavens" continues the drama with more war drum thumps and tense tones. Cinematic and pregnant with tension, full release is granted on the eerie, chilling breaking down. Flip for "Ujimasa" where momentum is ramped and battle is in full throe; relentless tribal beats are peppered with demonic, alien textures and the sense of conflict is palpable. "Shinto Muso Ryu" brings closure. A poignant calm after the storm laced with feint eastern flutes and a synapse snapping riddim. The battle is won but the war continues...

Review: In case you've not heard, Kings of the Rollers is a new D&B "super-group" featuring the combined talents of scene stalwarts Serum, Voltage and Blade Runner. This is their debut EP and, as you'd expect, it boasts far more hits than misses. As the Rave Alarm title makes clear, much of the material here is far more raw and intoxicating than your average Hospital release. Check, for example, opener "Euphoria", where razor-sharp electronic riffs bounce above fluctuating sub-bass and punchy jungle drums, and the rumbling gut-punch that is synth heavy title track "Rave Alarm". Elsewhere, Get Set Go is a fuzzy, hot-stepping workout, while closer "Running Man" wraps aggressive bass, creepy chords and ghostly flute lines around a retro-futurist riddim.

Review: According to Integral head honchos Artificial Intelligence, their latest EP "comprises four exhilarating episodes that will take you on an exhilarating journey". It is, then, a box set of sorts: a short season of all-action cuts designed to entertain from start to finish. They fittingly begin with something suitably filmic - the sweeping cinematic movements, head-in-the-clouds atmospherics, punchy beats and sumptuous vocals of "Degrees of Separation", before fusing elements of soul and neo-classic on superb liquid roller "Missing Piece". The experienced duo cleverly ratchet up the tension on the creepy, heavy and intense B-side opener "Tannan", before reaching a triumphant conclusion via the smooth and life-affirming brilliance of "Street Scense".

Review: Binga and Redders join forces once again for a unique hybrid of digi-dub, dancehall and D&B. "Tek Nah Chat" is spacey, gritty and primed for the dance as both characters' unique styles complement each other with physical rawness that no other producer/MC combo can boast (with, perhaps, the exception of Phizzy and Strategy) Further on we get all tripped out by the bending toplines and woozy synths of "Elastic", we get pranged out by the late night future grime "Steppin" and get thrusted back to the oldest of schools with the rampant jungle homage "Chasic". Not a dull moment, Binga is in a league of his own right now.

Review: The seventh volume in Beat Machine's ongoing "Swinging Flavors" series of singles arrives on vibrant turquoise vinyl. This time round, it's a relatively new artist at the controls: Breaka, whose debut 12" on Holding Hands tickled our fancy earlier in the year. Happily, "Damn Hot" lives up to its title, brilliantly joining the dots between the snappy drum machine snares, cut up vocal samples and incessant hustle of Chicago Juke, the crunchy breakbeat since of old school jungle, and the futurist intent of contemporary drum and bass. It's really rather good, all told, with Danny Scrilla's flipside remix - a spacey fusion of intergalactic synthesizer melodies and ruffneck early '90s jungle tropes - also hitting the sweet spot.

Abscess (5:20)
Momentum (5:32)
Review: More thrillingly heavy and mind-altering fare from UVB-76 offshoot Droogs, this time from previously unheralded Bristol producer and "close crew associate" Holsten. A-side "Abscess" is suitably dark and wild, with Holsten utilizing creepy, bass-heavy breakdowns to ratchet up the tension before unleashing the mother of all jungle riddims - cut-up and edited in true early '90s fashion - some distinctively trippy vocal samples before moving on to the flipside where the clandestine, paranoid feel continues on "Momentum".

Frankie Gunns (Gremlinz version) (5:19)
Frankie Gunns (Paradox remix) (6:49)
Review: Dev Pandya AKA Paradox clearly thinks that "Frankie Gunns", a vintage Gremlinz production from 2009 that first appeared on a multi-artist Renegade Hardware double-pack, has been a little overlooked. He's decided to reissue it on his label, adding a fresh 2018 remix of his own. Gremlinz head-in-the-clouds original - a wonderful combination of slowly shifting ambient chords, hedgerow field records, rambunctious jungle breakbeats and booming sub-bass - nestles on the A-side, with Pandya's revision on the flip. His rework is, arguably, even better, with deliciously dreamy ambient chords seemingly drifting in and out of a backing track rich in punchy D&B beats, stabbing riffs and rumbling bass. When Pandya ratchets up the ruffneck riddims midway through, the hairs on your arms and neck will leap to attention.

BXL (5:00)
Caligo (with Monty) (4:30)
Live With It (with Icicle) (4:35)
Slink (4:56)
Review: 1985 is a London based platform for forward thinking electronic music, basing its roots in 170/85 BPM and beyond. Label head honcho Alix Perez takes charge of the label's next release alongside label staple Montgomery Brimley from Toulouse (aka Monty) and London based Jeroen Snik aka Icicle (Shogun Audio/Entropy Music). Perez first flies solo on the darkside techstepper "BXL", while "Caligo" (with Monty) builds the suspense with its industrial edged atmosphere. On the flip, "Live With It" (with Icicle) is minimalist breakbeat science with a futurist edge, featuring pitch shifted and melancholic vocals, with a sub-bass that tears through your speakers like a chainsaw.

Everything (6:15)
Special (5:31)
Review: Following "Make It Right", Dublin beat splicer Ricky Force returns to Repertoire with two more highly charged jungle workouts. "Everything" smacks on a Paradox level with every beat chiselled and spliced into smithereens and slammed back together at high pressure. Loaded with cries, groans and shouts, this is an emphatic salute to the deepest of foundations. Meanwhile on the flip we hit "Special", a lighter jam with more of a rusty step to the rolling amens and a precision one word vocal sample that adds more funk that it technically should. Special indeed.
