DJ Fresh - "Dancing In The Dark" (feat Buunshin) (3:16)
Heavyweight (AMC remix) (4:37)
Review: DJ Fresh is a legend at this point. Whenever he drops new heat it is worth tuning in, especially when it's a 12" picture disc like this from Breakbeat Koas. The A-side is a collab with Buunshin. 'Dancing In the Dark' is a hardcore gem with pitched-up vocals and monstrous breaks over spin backs, raw bass and thrilling synth lacerations. Then comes an AMC Remix of DJ Fresh's 'Heavyweight' that is just that. It rides on silky breakbeats with a rising sense of tension that keeps you locked until the explosive bass and jump-up drum head to the level.

Review: There is a mix of old-school dons and new-school talents from all over the world here, each adding their own unique spin to Goldie's timeless. It's a record that remains a drum & bass benchmark, but also one of the most seminal in all of electronic music. The man behind it celebrated its anniversary last year with various different projects and now follows that up by handpicking a selection of remixes to take his most treasured material. Searchlight, aka Irish drum and bass producers ZeroT and Beta2, are signed exclusively to Goldie's Fallen Tree 1Hundred label and bring some lush jazz and broken beats to 'State of Mind' and later 'Sensual' while Metalheadz tastemaker J Kenzo brings dark, minimalistic and tribal sound to his Tribute remix of 'Jah'.

Review: When Hospital Records launched some 16 years ago, it was primarily to focus on the more soulful side of drum & bass. While London Elektricity's imprint is now about so much more than that, many of its' releases still bristle with an expansive soulfulness. This mixed, mid-price, two-disc affair pays tribute to the label's soulful side, delivering sinewy, string-laden gems, vocal anthems, and liquid D&B classics from the likes of SPY, High Contrast, Nu:Tone, Logistics, Danny Byrd, Phuturistix and, of course, London Elektricity. Who mixed it isn't revealed, but they've done a great job; both discs ripple with melody, emotion and, of course, skittering dancefloor rhythms. This is Fast Soul Music, after all.

Review: Danny Byrd's 'Shock Out' on the Hospital label, is already becoming an anthem across the
board. Not only big with fans of old-skool and choppage, but with the main room destroyers like
Andy C all jumping on board. 'Labyrinth' on the flip is unadulterated Byrd euphoria. Simultaneously
as deep as you like, but with the energy and drive to keep the floor packed, it’s a magical combo.

Elektricity Will Keep Me Warm
The Plan That Cannot Fail
Review: Hospital Records mainstay London Elektricity returns with the first new music in over two years - with "Elektricity Will Keep Me Warm" the first fruits from Yikes, Tony Colman's forthcoming sixth studio album under the LE name. The track does a fine job in presenting a different angle on the drum and bass formula, with a stripped down backing formed of twisted think breaks, introspective touches of piano chords and subtle bass hits which is augmented by the haunting vocal talents of Elsa Esmeralda. This is complemented by "The Plan That Will Never Fail", another track that will feature on the album - with Colman in familiar instrumental D&B territory dropping plenty of hands in the air piano moments amidst expertly chopped breaks and warm glistening bass.

Irregular
Review: His first proper Hospital 12" since signing earlier this year, Krakota showcases just why the mega-indie snapped him up in the first place... "Xylo" is appears light and sprightly on entry; all positive chords on a steel drum riff, but the underbelly that mirrors every top line move is a really dark and heavy affair. The result is a perfect example of infectious sonic contrast. "Irregular", meanwhile, is just straight-up dark. All gritty and scratchy with elements of neuro production, it's a proper heads down business that wouldn't go amiss at a Renegade Hardware bash.

As well as being a sweet D&B DJ weapon, there's a fresh approach to arrangement and melody here that makes it really stand out. With rhythms and phrases playing call and response with each other, the tune shifts constantly and will keep you addicted.

Flip for some Brazilian remix magic as Urbandawn adds an entirely new synth top line to "Clouds Across Skies", switching it from deep and emotional to dramatic and emotional. Don't sleep!

Review: Classic Hospital tracks from Cambridge man Sonic, who's made previous appearances on the label's Weapons of Mass Creation compilation, and now makes an impressive debut with these two killer workers. "Piano Anthem" comes complete with stunning vocals from Diane Charlemagne, and has a soulful and joyful vibe that'll set a room alight effortlessly. On the flip-side, "In The Vortex" is also well worth a look-in, coming in on a slightly darker tip but just as quality.

Review: Under the now familiar Nu:Tone alias, Dan Gresham has never been a prolific maker of albums. Even so, it still a surprise to find that Little Spaces, his fifth full-length excursion, is actually his first album for seven years. So, was it worth waiting for? Undeniably. Gresham's drum and bass beats remain alternately skittish, shuffling and crunchy, with warm and weighty sub-bass sitting beneath, while the soul-fired sonic sparkle and aural colour that has long been a trademark of his productions (think ear-pleasing synth sounds, simmering orchestration, nods to jazz-funk and intricate musical arrangements) remains to the fore. As a result, it's an album packed to the rafters with highlights, with our current faves including DJ Rae collaboration 'Shelter', future liquid classic 'Souled Out', and the string-laden 'Sweeter'.

The production alias of 19 year old Nico Mpunga, these ten tracks reveal Kimyan Law to be quite the precocious talent with a fresh sounding take on drum and bass that will appeal to many. A sheen of shimmering cinematic atmosphere is evident throughout the dreamy soundscapes the Congolese/Austrian newcomer weaves on Couer Calme and it is a set that will bring new qualities with every listen. After quite a distinctive debut it will be most intriguing to see where Mpunga goes next with Kimyan Law.

Since 2003, the Intrigue crew has been providing Bristol clubbers with regular doses of liquid funk and musically expansive drum and bass, first at their regular parties and, since 2008, on their offshoot label. Predictably, there's much to enjoy on this celebratory 12". Old pal Break steps up first with a veritable warm summer breeze of a roller, "Mind's Eye" - all punchy, snare-heavy beats, acoustic guitars, rumbling bass and dreamy freestyle vocals - before Superior Selectionz and Ben Soundscape join forces for the slightly more weighty but no less attractive "Justa". Over on side B, Soundscape returns to action alongside Ryogreen and Protone on the wobble bass-propelled stepper "Ruffneck", while Lurch - a lesser-known stalwart of the Bristol scene - delivers some delicious, Afro-tinged liquid funk alongside Joakuim. Rock solid.

Having scaled the heights of global superstardom over the last decade, Chase & Status last year returned to their more roughneck D&B roots with RTRN II JUNGLE, their retro-futurist fourth studio album. Here they continue that trend via RTRN II FABRIC, their first contribution to the legendary London club's popular DJ mix series. Full to bursting with high-octane Amen breaks, bowel-bothering sub-bass, punchy rhythms and MC flows, the mix sees the long-serving twosome pack 44 killer jungle and D&B cuts old and new into just under 80, all-action minutes. As you'd expect, it's packed with exclusives too - not least a wealth of unreleased Chase & Status productions and 'VIP' dubplate versions. If you love jungle and D&B, you need it in your life.

You could do a lot worse than this when trying to find an EP that hits its nail on the head of a British dance music scene in late-2020. Drum 'n' bass mogul Krust offering up his originals for a trilogy of remixes that represent a breadth of noises, not to mention some pretty strong emotions - from frustration and anxiety to reflection and rave-y love.

Starting with the latter, fellow 170-don Calibre delivers a typically soulful, warm, liquid cut that's always going to have broad appeal. Bass experimenter LCY does the opposite, all abrasive EBM sounds and intense, broken rhythms, with Flynn stepping in for the final part of the triptych - a classy slice of sparse and system-troubling dubstep. A very strong selection that's going to keep a variety heads interested.

After its recent appearance on Hospital Records' 25th anniversary compilation, Makoto's superb D&B cover of Al Hudson & The Soul Partners' 1978 disco classic, 'Spread Love', has been released as a single. It's well worth picking up, specifically for the A-side 'Full Length Mix', which ekes out the life-affirming, mood enhancing pleasure by another minute or so. It's a terrific version - as is the original mix, which you can find on the flip - and features British soul man Pete Simpson, backed by a big group of backing singers, belting out the loved-up lyrics atop swooping disco strings, warm synth sounds, booming bass and skittish D&B beats. Bonus cut 'Contact' is worth a listen to, featuring as it does floaty ambient intros, aggressive post-jungle beats, wavy vocal samples and some seriously bowel-bothering sub-bass.

Balance Over Symmetry begins with a sparkling, synth-heavy tribute to mid-80s NYC freestyle ('So Close'), and ends with a weighty, dubstep style collaboration with Demolition Man ('The Life of a DJ (Rockers Mix)'); in between, the fast-rising producer breathlessly rushes between typically heavy and ear-catching, club-focussed drum & bass jams, revivalist ragga-jungle workouts (Sweet Irie hook-up 'Natty Love'), stunningly atmospheric ambient interludes (see the spacey 'Consciousness'), immersive experimental D&B ('Moonshine'), and up-beat synth-wave goodness ('Endless Dreaming', with Belgian Goddess). He tries to capture the magic of the party on this new EP and does so admirably. The 6 tracks on the EP feels clever but charming. It's a collision of hardcore flurries, warped synths and day-glo keys that is often chaotic but also comforting. Drum & bass, rave, future grime and more all colour its grooves, but the resulting sound is pretty much impossible to define (in a good way).

There's something about the synths Potential uses - every sound is unique to him, his music is so completely different to anything else out. The flip is another chameleon job. "Rumours" is lovers rock, It's jazz, it's funk, and it's soul.

Future Prophecies - "Rave On"
Kos & Tenchu - "Last Days"
Review: Future Prophecies made their name with seminal and diverse tracks such as 'Colors', 'Rage', 'Eastern Organic' and 'Dreadlock'.
Sticking to a formula of 'whatever works', their music has always stood out from the crowd by being varied and yet recognisable
in style. No wonder they've been picked up by Fresh and Adam F's Breakbeat Kaos imprint. Future Prophecies take the wheel
for the stupidly infectious T99 sampling 'Rave On', a track that was previously scheduled for BBK and has been battered on plate
by plenty of the scene's elite. New artists Kos & Tenchu take over on the aa-side with the huge sound of 'Last Days' which makes
this 12" essential purchasing. DJ support from: Adam F, Fresh, Bryan G, Pendulum, Zinc, Dieselboy, and Concord Dawn amongst others.

Invisible Heating
Review: Tense, ticking beats in an Alix Perez vein set the tone for the intro of "Insignificant Thoughts". Proving that stripped back, poised D&B is just as effective as the soaring highs and lows of its more mainstream counterpart, Dutch producer Nymfo makes his mark with this excellent release on Spirit's label, Inneractive Music. Understated elegance is at the heart of "Invisible Heating" too, as futuristic, trance-addled synths splay out across the soundscape, before rolling out into a more tense, spaced out Phace + Misanthrop future funk stepper. Super sleuth tactics all the way here.

Innovatah - "Look Yout Man"
Dope Ammo - "Look Yout Man VIP"
Review: Taking some familiar Reggae samples and twisting them up into new and interesting ways is the name of the game on this latest 12" from Ease Up Recordings. Label boss Innovatah knocks out a bass heavy dancefloor roller with all the appeal of a Friday night kebab after 10 pints! On the flip d&b legend Dope Ammo gets his jump up on with a fast and furious re-rub that will smash down any dancefloor you choose to unleash it on. "Look Yout Man" is heavier than a rucksack full of cement.

Review: The Midget is back, More stabbing beats! More punching bass! This is about as aggressive as you can get on the dance floor while still wearing a smile on your face. This time round featuring the vocals of a real midget MC 'bloody charmin', Rhythm Beater pushes boundaries with a jump up riddem unmatched in recent innovation. Artwork by Zombie. Entertaining London for 10 years with his unique characters, Zombie is a legend who can lay claim to just about every postcode in the City. Almost as elusive as prolific, Cutterz Choice are proud to be able to present Zombie on the Graff series.

Review: Bringing forth dynamic, dancefloor drum & bass, Generation X Recordings is the brainchild of London-based producers Malachai and Angle,
better known as Nightbreed. Following the huge success of their first 12" 'It's Alive'/'Some Men', Nightbreed have enlisted the talents of
some hard hitting new blood for their second release. High Rankin & DJ Dangerous supply Generation X with 'Hills Have Eyes' while Eddy
Woo comes correct with the intensely sickening 'Roam'. Building with an increasingly epic and horrific intro 'Hills Have Eyes' drops into a full-
on assault of beats, bass and grungy distortion that's sure to turn your stomach. Keep your eye on High Rankin & DJ Dangerous, these boys
are serious! Backing it up is another hugely talented producer, Eddy Woo made his name producing a wide range of diverse flavours, but here
he's turned out a massive dancefloor smacker that will pound you across the face like a drunken pimp.

'Jealous Skies' leads the way with hypnotic rolling drums, swooshing sound FX, and eerie pads which build the vibe nicely, unleashing a catchy analogue bassline. Review: Macc drops two sublime pieces of jazz and funk inspired d&b on Breakin. He has been carving his little niche in the scene for a while now with his live performances and releases on Paradox s Outsider label. 'The Way Of The Small Thought' opened the recent Knowledge CD by Offshore boss DJ Clever and is probably his best work to date. A8R backs this up with Kung fu samples, funked up bass and tight breaks.

Critical Orbit
Review: A punishing yet melodic track, "Orbit" opens with an epic intro before tight crunching amen's take to the stage and thrust this track straight into dancefloor territory. Heavily supported and currently taking clubs by storm all over Europe and the US, "Orbit" delivers a memorable vocal hook alongside a washing backdrop of horns and synths, and when combined with the deep subby bassline you are left with a genre-defying piece of music that will add serious weight to virtually any set. ASC strike gold.

Warlordz
Review: Keeping the quality control once more on top, DJ Basher's debut release 'Leachcraft' has been an absolutely massive hit with just about everyone within the d&b scene. It features vocal snippets from the infamous Singing Fats and has gained plays on Grooverider’s Radio 1 show, as well as being played by DJs such as Baron, Pendulum, Andy C, Hype, Zinc and many more. 'Warlordz' goes on more of a heavy tip with its haunting half time intro and reece b-line. Switching beats & bass keeps the track charging along with movie vocal snippets giving the hook. 'Warlordz' has been gaining plays from the likes of Sub Focus, Red One, Dylan, Fresh, L Double, and Pendulum. This is a great start to DJ Basher's production career with plenty more releases pencilled in for Frequency and sister label Ram.

On the flip "Jump & Twist" is a rocking breakbeat anthem with reggae vibes, dope female vocal samples, skanking synth rhythms, a touch of a rasta vocal and a huge building over the top explosive moment.
