Review: 2014 is a special year for Dom Angas. Not only is he turning 40, but it also marks 20 years since the release of his first single under the Dom & Roland alias. As part of the celebrations, he's handed over the parts to a string of classic productions to a veritable who's who of D&B talent. They provide a series of dark, pulverising, rolling and occasionally intense reworks, all designed to cement his reputation as one of the greatest exponents of the artform. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the classic jungle breaks and rave-era rush of BTK and Optiv's rework of "Jungle Beast", to the exotic melodies, foreboding stabs and tech-tinged textures of Mindscape's mighty rub of "Mindfeeders".

Review: Veteran producer, radio host and Metalheadz resident Bailey knows a thing of two about darkside drum & bass, having been one of the scene's major players since way back in 2003. Here, he showcases his skills as selector and mixer with Warehouse Music, an all-action throwdown for V Recordings' offshoot Chronic. Bold, ravey, stomping and suitably bass-heavy, it sees Bailey sprinting through a selection of heavyweight rollers from the likes of Roni Size, Saxxon, Crytical Dub, Command Strange and L-Side. Throughout, the old skool jungle influence is clear, and Bailey barely pauses for air. It's that kind of mix - a quick, thrill-a-minute ride through D&B's bolder pastures.

Review: Surprisingly, it's been four years since Hospital Records last artist-led mix CD. Whether or not London Elektricity's imprint is attempting to rediscover their roots is unclear; either way, there's something pleasingly stripped-back and old-fashioned about this no-nonsense "mixtape" from rising star Etherwood. The DJ/producer picked up a clutch of gongs at last year's D&B Awards, and here takes on a warm, rich, rolling and inviting foray through drum & bass's more melodic pastures. While firmly floor-focused, with tracks from both big hitters and lesser-known names (it reportedly also includes nine previously unreleased exclusives), there are plenty of deeper, looser moments, with Etherwood touching on liquid D&B and deep jungle just as much as big room-friendly smashers and soulful anthems.

Review: Brazil's DJ Marky is one of the few D&B guys still nurturing and developing his sound. It's a delicate mix of exotic, samba-filtered melodies and stunningly beautiful drum arrangements. The title track is exactly what we like to see: shuffling drums, esoteric melodies and suave lyrics. On the flip, "Love Affair" is similarly enchanting and Marky once-again proves everyone wrong by doing what he loves best. TIP!

Review: There's something rather admirable about this new compilation series from Shogun Audio. It aims to showcase "the rising stars of drum & bass", gathering together some of the best demos they've received in recent times. Happily, the quality threshold matches the label's lofty ambitions. There's much to admire throughout, from the cyber-sonic wobble of Karma's "Saturation Point" and the fizzing, string-laden grandiosity of Voltage's "Suspicious", to the sax-laden liquid shuffle of Paul Sg & Soultec's "Wishful Thinking", and the punishing jungle of Nickbee's "Elysium". If this is the future of drum & bass, then the genre is in safe hands.

Review: Rumours have been rife on this for well over two years now. Refusing to hurry as much as he refuses to compromise, Rockwell has taken his time and crafted one of the most distinctive, unique bass music albums: Obsolete Medium. Referencing ghetto-tech, classic hardcore (rave and punk) and formative jungle, every track, even the skits, justifies its place: from the torch-raising Banks-style leftfield ballad "Faces" through to the toxic waste bass and paranoia of "Guts/Bloods/Sex/Drugs" by way of the unadulterated rave mischief of "Please Please Please (Play This On The Radio)" and cosmiche bass of "Technoir", the whole album is detailed, precision articulated and full of surprises. Far from obsolete.

Review: Skope dons his Malux guise for the first time and it's beyond impressive. Usually found lurking around the glitchier territories, Malux is a chance for the UK artist to show his broader, grittier neuro side with two slabs of Bad Taste tactics: "Turbine" is a real hurricane of a track that scrapes up and down with dynamic hype. "Fonk" is more heads-down neuro slappery; precision steps, a toxic bassline and dense psy-line on the drop, shrouded in a classic detuned midrange reece. Devilish.

Review: Russian roustabouts Command Strange and Intelligent Manners collide for some head-to-head fun on Marky's Innerground imprint. The vinyl edition features a select cut of the full album's 12 tracks which do well to highlight the duo's broad style. From the jaw-dropping darkness of "Frontline" to the gully jump up rawness of "Ghetto Drama" by way of soulful duvet moments such as "Jumpin' The Sun" and the jazz-licked "Uptight", each of these cut have been tried and tested by the big bossman himself. Review: Where Hospital's Fast Soul Music compilation was a celebration of the label's instinctively soulful D&B sound, this follow-up is far more steeped in 1990s nostalgia. As the title suggests, Fast Jungle Music highlights the influence of D&B's formative years - and specifically the ragga, dub and breakbeat influences of '90s jungle - on their expansive roster of artists. Being a Hospital release, melody and soul are still present, but often take second place to thrillingly loose and booming jungle breaks, throbbing basslines and deliciously old skool samples. The two discs are vaguely themed, but the differences are subtle, at best. Throughout, what's delivered is a perfect balance between liquid idealism and vintage rave madness.

Review: Marking five years since Bad Taste snapped the singular skills of Sarajevo scientist Billain, Bad Taste recruit four acts to make history and become the first people to remix Billain. No mean feat, but all acts deliver... "Manifold" gets the treatment from Neonlight and Malux. The former get creative with the metallic riff while Malux bull-charges with layers on layers of energy. "Batbots", meanwhile, goes under the knives of Mindscape and Pythius. Here the former really puts us through our paces with relentless drums and full use of the heavy-rev horsepower bassline and the latter adds more of his own characteristic Dutch drama. Each act making sure Billain's first ever remix go down in history, this release is nothing short of momentous.

Review: Last summer, Tony Colman took the daring decision to form his own jazz style big band, in order to perform a set of London Elektricity tracks at the 10,000-capacity Hospitality In The Park festival. It was a rip-roaring success, as this recording of the performance emphatically proves. Given that Colman's brand of D&B is more musically expansive than most, it's unsurprising that tracks such as "Different Drum", "Song In The Key of Knife", "Out of This World" and "Artificial Skin" sound brilliant when performed by a combo containing Dynamite MC and members of Riot Jazz (and, yes, the high tempo drumming is ridiculously tight). Like a true showman, he also threw in a surprise cover - a killer version of Daft Punk's "One More Time".

Review: Following Etherwood and Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y is the next to step up to the "Hospital Mixtape" series with a walloping 31-track mix of which almost half has never been released before. As you'd expect from the bazillion dollar Brazilian, the range is wide with tendencies to gully. Essential exclusives you'd be an absolute madman not to check include his deep-swing twist on Digital's seminal "Deadline", the insane sub bass slipperiness on Random Movement's incredible "In Space No One Can Hear You Funk" and the "Up All Night" style late 90s slap down with his brother Unreal "Enduro". A proper mix and a previously unobtainable selection that's yours for the taking... What's not to love here?

Review: Russian trio rooted in the foundations of Total Advance Music, here we find Gydra making their debut on Bad Taste with two outstanding slices of deep dark neurofunk. "Dystopia" rolls with drums made of pure thunder. Rolling like a super-sized cattle stampede, the drama never lets up as we're teased and teased with the prospect of drop that never comes.
