Drum & Bass / Jungle
Run Away
Somethin Heavy
Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

Review: Can you remember what you were doing ten years ago? I think I was trying to get Katie Smith drunk on cheap cider and get into her knickers, but that's another story. What Total Science were doing was setting up what would become one of the pioneering labels of the drum & bass scene. Now, in celebration to their now grown up and rather attractive baby, Total Science have decided to release "A Decade Of CIA Records", a retrospective mix CD which features some of the highlights of the last decade and some of the highlights of the next.

Review: Calibre on Digital's Function. Life doesn't get much better than this. The Belfast doyen has brought along his mate Jet Li for the ride and the results are every bit as golden as you'd expect. "Push Through It" is an immaculate string affair with that classic Signature poignancy while "Trees In The Wind" echoes with a marbled synth texture, sudden flickers of piano and yearning guitar twangs. A match made in soulful roller heaven.

Review: Shogun knows how to throw a party... Their "100" celebrations started in March and they're still going strong three months later! A chance for the label's artists and friends to stretch their skills and signatures, there's been some really exciting, subversion work throughout the series. This final piece in the puzzle is no exception; Fourward deliver their funkiest track to date, Karma gets all soulful, Total Science get all drifty and ethereal while Break simply reminds us why we love him. All four cuts glistening with long-lasting gold, Shogun can carry on celebrating their 100th release for as long as they like as far as we're concerned.

Review: Celebrating 20 years of CIA (and switching from The Funky Technicians to Total Science) Quiff and Spinback have curated an almighty album with some of their label's most popular artists alongside a bunch of label debutants. Here's a taste of the LP with DLR's sinewy tech take on Quiff's 93 agenda-maker "Champion Sound", a sultry slice of piano gold from Calibre and dubbed out stepped jam from the guys themselves as they pay homage to the likes of Digital and Spirit with "Respect Due". Immense.

Review: Total Science take a step back in time with "Catch Up" and "Trigger Happy". "Catch Up" is in a similar vein to the new work by Commix, Nu Tone and Wickaman - it hits the spot well whilst retaining that certain element needed to smash the dance. "Trigger Happy" is more of the old Dread sound - a power tune to drop on the crowd when they look like they're tiring in the early hours.

Review: Another high quality EP in his signature style from Calibre. 'Corner Dance' is a gorgeous piece of future soul, constructed with solid, unrelenting percussion, heavy subs, plunging bass, animated flute flourishes, restrained vocals and sparkling keys. 'True Stories' on the flip side, blends lively classical strings with snappy beats and lava flow bass. The second vinyl includes both tracks 'V Neck' and 'Dirty Mind', which are just as exhilarating.

Review: "Shelf life" contains 21 unreleased classic tracks covering d&b, house, broken beat and dub productions (from 1997 to 2005). There aren't many artists that have a veritable vault of back dated and in demand tracks, but Calibre is an exception to the rule. None of the tracks on "Shelf Life" have ever been on CD format before and have only been played by a select few lucky enough to have been given them on plate.

Sick Of It All
Review: Given his status as one of drum and bass's true heavyweights; you'd expect this eighth Calibre full-length to be one of the most hotly anticipated jungle sets of the year. Certainly, it's a fine effort, packed with emotion-rich atmospherics, fizzing rhythms and intricate, occasional beautiful, musical touches. He seems to be at his best when concentrating on musicality, as the delightful "Close To Me', soulful "Wilderness" and summery "Do Not Turn On" prove. There are, of course, rawer moments (see the tech-tinged "Simple Things" and dubstep flex of "Start Again"), but these don't hit nearly as hard as his effortlessly soulful compositions.

Suspicious (feat Riya - Alix Perez remix)
Review: Drum & Bass legends Total Science add the Shogun Audio label to their stacked discography here, debuting in style with the double plated See Your Face EP. Longtime Total Science collaborator Riya lines the opening title track, adding a lush vocal element to a typically crisp arrangement from Smith and Greenhalgh, which contrasts nicely with the fractured Jungle abstractions of B Side ruffhouser "Hush Ya Mouth". Onto the second plate and the mood remains grizzly with the decidedly old skool business that is "Just Want You" whilst Side D sees Alix Perez turn in a remix of another Riya collaboration "Suspicious" trading the dark garage vibe of the digital only original in favour of something truly soulful.

Simple Emotion
Review: Put your hands up if you remember Calibre's exceptional "Steptoe" from a few years back! Deep hypnotic dub made with a D&B mindset, it resonated with true sub low funk and that unique soul the Belfast producer has always maintained. Well here's another track cut from a similar sonic cloth; "Temple Step" is like "Steptoe's" meaner, moodier brother. More spacious than a Hummer glove box, darker than a Frankie Boyle joke, this is deep and deadly material. Meanwhile on the B "Simple Emotion" takes up back up the swift, lightfooted hats and fat kicks Calibre is best known for. With a warped bass groove and dark, minimalist production approach, this is guaranteed to add great texture to your next set.

Review: Some things are worth waiting for: it's been 11 years since Total Science's debut Tuned In collection. Not ones to fire out releases willy-nilly, they've toiled hard to curate an immaculate compendium that celebrates drum & bass's most timeless, enduring aspects. Over three plates we're treated to some immense cuts that will tickle all D&B DJs flavours. Break's outrageous sub session "Slipstream", Calibre's dubcentric stepper "Clipper Man" and Serum's ghetto-bang drama screamer "Vendetta" are just three of these gems. Get tuned in or go home!

Mutated Forms - "Best Served Cold VIP"
Review: Remix alert! Zero T's been given the keys to Total Science's 2002 stonker "Lightweight" and he's nailed it with distinction... Where once the percussion was the main attraction, Zero's taken the bubbling bassline and made it much juicier and warpish. Adding a whole layer of additional FX and sounds, it's the perfect complement. Meanwhile on the B Mutated Forms add just a teensy bit more welly to their already walloping "Best Served Cold". Heaviness.

Review: Signature drop Calibre's best work to date with "Steptoe." A deft halfstepper that displays rigid programming and sumptuous bass weight, this is a subtle killer from Calibre. It has hint of jungalism and the peaceful melodies set it apart from the rest of his work. B-side "Silence" is less refined but rolls out a worthy number in itself.

Castaway
Review: Veteran Jungle professors Total Science continue their fruitful production partnership with the prodigious whippersnapper known as S.P.Y. - dropping two more cuts of pressure on this rather smart looking clear yellow ten inch. "Stay" will have the jungle purists all misty eyed with thick gloopy bass excursions reverberating from the nether regions amidst a delicious steppah's riddim augmented by evil sub bass deviations - a superlative example of drum and bass at its most dark and danceable. On the flip "Cast Away" proves just as crucial, laying down a dubbier rhythm over sprawling Detroit chords and tinny beats before dropping into the core segment of f***ed up, growling machine funk. Every bit as worthy as their recent Ghost Rider drop.

Redlines (feat Riya - Break remix)
Scaremonger
Review: One of the most highly revered and rotated vocal D&B tracks from the past six months is back, this time
with an ice-cold twist ready to take us into the frosty autumnal months. Drawing in the talents of Critical
playmate Break to add his deft touch was always going to result in one thing – absolute dance floor
devastation! Oozing class while smacking up the dance is something many producers can only dream
of….the masterclass starts here.
Drifting pads with sexed-up guitar touches intro the ‘Redlines’ remix before the drums kick and we’re
away on a blues-infused excursion with full vocal riding on top as the chords roll out. Don’t be fooled
though as the fun’s just about to start! A quick repeated refrain and suddenly in crash the amens,
edits and the most gut-wrenching sub to demolish the place. Vocal teases run throughout together
with swathes of guitar but it’s the sheer tearout that wins in the end. Absolutely fantastic.
Flipping things over and Total Science come back with the classic sounds of ‘Scaremonger’.
Seemingly an ode to the vibes of yesteryear, this one bounces with the best of them. A hot twostepping
break carries the stabbing b-line that morphs subtly as this wicked bubbler moves along with
ease. Proper Total Science doing what they do best.

Review: Calibre on Exit... Need we say more? Four tracks deep, each one as subtle and classy as you'd expect. "Strumpet" balances swooning somnambulant strings, distant harmonies and a bumping bass that billows with the perfect amount of gruff. "Stranger" is a sharper, steppier blend with metallic twists to the undulating subs, "The Sweet" is all about the rhythm thanks to insistent percussive jungle shakers and a drum dynamic that switches from lean to mean at the drop of a snare. Finally we hit "Concrete". The hardest track of the pack; here we find Calibre in a more unrelenting mood as an array of bass tones ebb and flow over a thicker, more robust rhythm. The clue's in the title... Calibre is indeed a sonic strumpet of highest order.

Dream Of You (5:32)
Review: After a stupendously prolific 2013 and 2014 (wherein he delivered no less than four albums), Calibre appears to have taken his foot off the gas and slipped into a more comfortable release-rate. Following his "Strumpet" EP on Exit comes this ace four-tracker that represents all his drum & bass styles: "Boogeyman Bullshit" is Dominick Martin at his darkest and most mischievous, all wobbly bass and slippery. "Smother" (featuring long term compadre Marcus Intalex) slaps with big washy chords that chime with an almost Detroitian hypnotic affect, "Multi Tasking" is a swam of sonic bees that have set up a nest in Metalheadz HQ circa 1997 and show no sign of budging. Finally, with its twinkling arpeggios and major chords "Dream Of You" is Calibre at his dreamiest and most emotional... Then drop comes and, once again, his sub bass melts your cones. Immaculate.

As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Review: It's by Calibre and it has balls in the title... Does any more need to be said? Not really, but credit where it's due - no artist comes close in consistency, proliferation and out-and-out distinctive style than Calibre. Here he is in "Posh Boy" mode - all sizzling in the bass and hazy in the chords - "Iron Balls" is nasty but restrained, cruel but kind, furious but funk. "Angel Breach" takes us even deeper into Calibre's darker side with a ricochet drum set and bassline that ploughs deeper and deeper into the abyss. There's no mucking around here - just up dark style Calibre.

DLR takes the lead with a wriggling, sinewy acidic number where the elements are tightly woven but have stacks of space between them at the same time. Flip for the deliciously wonky funk cut from DLR and Total Science as "On The Edge" does a really far-out springy off-beat thing that sound odd to begin but grows on every listen... Ed:It and Pennygiles's 2014 firecracker gets the treatment from Ulterior Motive, adding just a lick or two of shade to the already solid groove. ST Files and Response follow with a beautifully restrained deep stepper that's not dissimilar to erstwhile ST collaborator Marcus Intalex. Total Science and FD maintain the deep theme with a soulful rolling track that's not dissimilar to their Funky Technicians material. Villem and McLeod anchor the EP with a unique halftime roll that balances dark and light tighter than your nan's 1950s television. A truly spotless EP.

Review: It's been almost two years since we last saw a Dispatch disc from Dutch damager Nymfo. In that time he's hammered hard across Metalheadz, Commercial Suicide, Fokuz and Renegade Hardware with his trademark twistedness keeping us on our toes from release to release. And our toes aren't set to rest any time soon... "Marching Machines" lives up to its name with a deep droning bass and a really cool Nicholson sample. It's backed by two major collaborations: with DLR he goes all heads-down, gritty and mildly tribal on "Affliction" while with Total Science he goes all bouncy and funky with "Forward Motion".

The lead track takes us right back to the mid-'90s with cavernous space and sheet metal scrapping textures. "Soul For Sale" is a jazzier jaunt with spasmodic synth flurries and a two-step so sharp you'll lose your lobes. "Contraband" weaves such strong drum magic you could be convinced you've gone 20 years back in time while "All Massive" is a straight-up heads-down affair. Noteworthy.

Part two continues the same broad-screen vein of creative form as we glide from meanie heads-down rollers ("Lost Life") to digidub halftime ("Rise") to raw tech grit ("Lightworks") before climaxing with the immense jazz swing of "Catch". Review: While the mighty Aswad once told us "Don't Turn Around", the even mightier Total Science have now advised us to "Turn Around"... And with its dreamy cosmic synths, surging vocal and classic snare rolling jungle break, we know whose orders we're going to believe. The fun doesn't stop there as the all star cast continues... Break joins the party for the bone-rattling Headzy tear-up "Big Time Winners", Calibre jumps on the remix tip with a delicate lilting twist on the Riya-fronted "Walk The Same Lines" and DLR taps in for the heads-down, purring-sub stepper "Too Close For Comfort". Heavyweight and high grade, this is an incredible EP.

Review: Nominated as the best Drum & Bass act at the Urban Music Awards 2005, Total Science, quite possibly the most prolific artists in D & B history, have taken a year to create a truly international project for this, their fourth album. Crafted between two studios, their Oxford base and Philadelphia (where they utilised the vocal talent on hand), guest performers on this project include Grand Agent, Phone, Patrice Williams, Darien Brockington, Lady Ama, Kaidi Tatham (Bugz in the Attic), DJ Craze and MC Conrad. Covering the entire range of the TS sound, we go from soulful vocal tunes to MC ed dancefloor rollers, bouncy bass through to anthemic crowd pleasers with the neo-soul ‘Vibe’ picking up pays on Trevor Nesons ‘Soul Nation’ show and 1Xtra’s Ronnie Hare, ‘Sweet Music’ has become a highlight of Dego’s (4 Hero) sets after having been picked up by King Britt. ‘Defcom VIP’ (aka Defcom 69 remix), not only was a huge anthem last year, but in it's VIP mix has made it onto EA games ‘Fifa Streets 2’. IDJ "Total Science have been at the forefront of drum & bass for over a decade.

Soul Patrol (Full Length version)
Soul Patrol (MJ Cole dub mix)
Review: Featuring the timeless vocals from the world famous MC Conrad and remixes from UK garage pioneer (and once again hot property) MJ Cole, this is the stand out track from the 'Mars Needs Total Science' album. Having featured in a mass of DJ top tens, DJ sets and on BBC Radio 1Xtra, Asian Network & Radio 1 playlists 'Soul Patrol' is quoted by Artificial Intelligence to be a "real good party summer-tune that everyone loves", DJ Friction claims "This is what drum & bass is all about". Other quotes come from Kev Hill @ Solar Radio "Well nice solid groove with more than a hint of commercial appeal" and the MJ Cole remixes getting high praise from Annie Mac & Aaron Ross, whilst Conrad's spar LTJ Bukem adds "Conrad shows what he's all about and Total Science do what they do, make great tracks". First 12" features the original mix and a dub mix from MJ Cole. On the remix 12", Total Science deliver their own remix with additional guitar from Bungle, while MJ Cole turns in a more house flavoured mix.

25 Years Of Metalheadz: The Series Part 6

Universe 92 (4:28)
Jungle Jungle (remastered) (5:34)
Review: As the celebrations of Metalheadz continue apace 25 years into their tenure at the top of the D&B food chain, attentions turn to the mighty Total Science who are looking back on the same length of time since they first committed their tunes to wax. On the A side of this 12", they're rolling low and nasty with the hardcore stylings of 'Universe 92'. It's a new production, but it sports the gnarly stylings of a vintage track in every possible way. Meanwhile they turn to a classic on the flip, offering up a remastered version of early 00s roller 'Jungle Jungle' which is in fact more of a sharp-shooting D&B masterclass that's been out of print for far too long.

Gun Finger

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Gun Finger (4:47)
Acquiesce (4:32)
Review: Break and Total Science first worked together back in 2019, delivering the well-received 'Dog's Dinner'. Here they re-ignite their cross-generational production partnership with a fine two-tracker, which also marks the debut of their new jointly owned label, Triii Audio. Lead cut 'Gunfinger' is particularly potent, with the trio doffing a cap to drum & bass's soundsystem culture roots. The track not only contains pitched-down sections of sampled reggae grooves, but also ragga-jungle era vocal samples, crunchy and retro-futurist breakbeats, and bass so warped and gnarly it may be capable of blowing speaker stacks. Flipside 'Acquiesce' is a moody and punchy affair, with soundman bleeps, echoing vocal snippets, rasping rave noises and creepy chords rising above foreboding bass and blistering beats.

Blame You (5:39)
Aardvark (4:55)
Review: The story of Triii continues as Break and Total Science continue to ramp up their new co-lab imprint with two more powerful link-ups. 'Blame You' is all about those warm dubby vibes. Soul stirring vocals and a big old sausage of a bassline; like all of their collaborations, you can hear both acts' sounds so clearly in this. 'Aardvark' follows with even more oomph and ooh-la-la. Big on the ravey vocal sample and even bigger on the turbine bass drone; this one is going to enjoy a lot of heavy rotations over festival season. Wowzers.

Review: Is there a more consistently policy and famously high quality producer in all of electric music - let alone just drum & bass - that the universally respected Irishman, Calibre? The don of drums and baron of bass is by now a master of his art and the one going Shelflife series continually proves that time and time again. This seventh volume is once again jam-packed with silky rhythms, soulful sounds and meticulous craftsman ship across a wide range of tempos and moods. There are roomy steppers like 'Ready Beek' next to darker, edgier and more menacing cuts like 'Snoopy' signature emotive sounds like 'Nearly Nothing.'

Review: Dominick Martin AKA Calibre has made many fine albums in his time, but even by his standards Feeling Normal - his 17th solo set - is something special. While naturally rooted in the soulful, emotive style of drum & bass that he's become renowned for, the album's 13 tracks also incorporate rhythmic and musical elements drawn from two-step garage, the sub-heavy end of UK techno, ultra-deep house, dub techno and dubstep. As a result, the vast majority of the cuts on show neatly sidestep convention, delivering hybrids that gleefully celebrate the impact of soundsystem culture on the UK bass continuum while also offering something new, fresh, melodious, hugely listenable and exceptionally entertaining.
