Zegafunk EP
Cat: META 93. Rel: 19 Jan 23

Drum & Bass / Jungle
ZegaFunk (7:16)
Tiger Moth (7:02)
Kalibrate (4:57)
An Uncharted Vision (4:55)
Review: J:Kenzo is known more as a dubstep pioneer, but it's always refreshing to hear producers such as him break away from their pre-established style - in this case, the revolutionary sound is drum n' bass. 'Zegafunk' locks in four new heaters for Metalheadz (it's his debut for the legendary drum n' bass label), establishing a no-nonsense throwback to the earliest incarnations of jump-up and techstep, only repackaged for the present day. In the words of Metalheadz, there's a real classic feel to it, with the unendingly dystopian and robotic sound of late 90s drum n' bass shining through; 'Tiger Moth' and 'Kalibrate' are cases in point, with conveying moods of unswung menace and malicious awe.

DLR & Mako - "Your Mind"
DLR - "10 Steps"
DLR - "Sence Of Wanting"
DLR & Mako - "Seek Knowledge" (feat Rider Shafique)
Review: DLR and Mako: Now here's a drum & bass super duo that genuinely need no introduction! Two 12"s brandishing four tracks, two collaborations, and two originals. Both players and label have excelled themselves right here, as you'll instantly hear when the startling jazzy keys flurry in from nowhere on "Your Mind". Dig deeper for the sharp, steppy riddim of DLR's "10 Steps" and ice-cold synth washes and rhythmic human element manipulation of "Sense Of Wanting". Finally we climax with "Seek Knowledge". Featuring a stark sermon from Rider Shafique, it's an abyss-like halfstepper that's galvanised with industrial strength production that allows every element to resonate deeply. Open up "Your Mind" today!

You're Next (6:06)
Music City (5:02)
Review: After taking a well-deserved break to bask in the reception to last year's debut album The Fourth Wall, South Coast pair James Davidson and Greg Hepworth are back on the 12" flex with this hefty new slab of Ulterior Motive badness for Metalheadz. Lead track "You're Next" pulls no punches thanks to a vicious lead Reese bassline that's got more snarl than a yard full of Rottweilers and some unpredictable drums. Complementing this, "Music City" bristles with sonic tension and energy, implementing similar levels of funk to Ulterior Motive's album cut "Sideways".

Review: Since making his debut on Nu Urban Music Records way back in 2007, Mikal has established himself as one of drum & bass's most well regarded talents. Hopes are naturally high, then, for this belated debut album. Predictably, it hits hard from the start, with the London-based Swede impressing with the depth, variety and armour-clad toughness of his immaculately programmed rhythms. He expertly combines these punchy breaks with twisted samples, clandestine textures, surging sub-bass and pitched-down ragga vocal samples, in the process delivering a range of tracks that sit somewhere between tech-step, sub-heavy darkness, experimental D&B, and classic Metalheadz material.

Review: The wait is over: Metalheadz have been teasing us with the prospect of a Mikal debut since at least 2012. Naturally the Swedish skirmish starter hasn't disappointed. 16 tracks of grazingly fresh designs we range from the sci-fi laser ballad opener "Patterns" by way of dagger-sharp dark tech ("Ruff Life"), elastic space drones ("Segunda") and even slinky, sassy funky drummer work on his ode to the master ("JB's Groove"). Complete with cameos from Break, Xtrah and Buraka Som Sistema's RIOT and Chimpo, this is the type of debut album you'd take home to meet the folks... If your folks understand the virtues of precision engineered drum & bass, that is.

Where They At
The Chosen (with Nymfo)
Control Of People (with RIOT)
Review:  Last seen collaborating with Need For Mirrors and HLZ on a single for Warm Communications, Swedish-born, London-based producer Mikal returns to Metalheadz for one solo cut and two team-ups. Solo track "Where They At" is full of Mikal's trademark bounce, a sparse, atmospheric production with jungle-inspired rhythm fragments darting off invisible surfaces in an irresistible manner. "The Chosen" sees him join forces with Nymfo for something a little more driving, as evil subs push things forward, while RIOT gets involved on "Control Of People", a slow-fast heavy hitter with crushing bass drops. You shouldn't need any proof that Metalheadz is still leading the way, but if you do then this should do the trick.

Artificial Intelligence - "Warhosre" (feat DRS)
Loxy & Resound - "Paradigms"
Review: Has it really been over ten years since the last Platinum Breakz compilation? Ahead of Metalheadz dropping Vol 4 of the most revered compilation series in Drum & Bass, a second two track sampler arrives to further whet appetites - as if that needs to happen - with cuts from Artificial Intelligence and DRS and the Rufige pair of Loxy and Resound. Glenn and Zula sound on inspired form with "Warhorse" a powerful, snarling steppers anthem that's made all the more venomous thanks to DRS's vocal contribution. Face down, Loxy & Resound rep the Rufige sound and indulge in some vintage Metalheadz flavours on "Paradigms" which is pitched perfectly between elements of darkness (Reese drops, mangled breakbeats) and light (haunting vocal harmonies and swirling synths).

Sierra Mist (6:51)
Review: Longtime Headz affiliate and frequently Goldie's co-pilot in the studio, Heist returns to the label with his largest EP to date and its business from of the off as "Violent Rain" oozes Timeless era synth tones and drums so live and sweaty you can almost see the drummer's sweat coming from your speakers. Dig deeper for Heist's most versatile showcase in years: "In Pursuit" is all stripped back and slinky (think Enei but wider), "Sierra Mist" is a sci-fi stepper that nods towards Riya's soulful style, "Unauthorised Transmissions" is a cheeky underground squelcher, "Grebe" is thoroughbred alien funk with just a sly nod towards his more standard jump-up signature while "Ghost On My Shoulder" closes the show on a beautiful glitchy vibe that's somewhere between Culprate and Squarepusher. Properly unique, creative and immaculately produced, Heist has smashed it on this one.

Review: OOOF! Metalheadz come through with two absolutely brutal VIP versions of Dom & Roland cuts, pressed up JA style on 7" for proper dancehall selectors! First up is a VIP of "Unofficial Jah" last year's refix of Goldie's "Jah" by Dom which went down a hellish 2 step route to devastating effect; this new version amps up the sub pressure, weighs down those kicks and adds plenty of delay and dub. Any Metalheadz fam that locked into the label's Christmas podcast last year will know all about the "Outta Endz" VIP on the flip which is a masterpiece in unrelenting Jungle production. Do not sleep!

Outta Endz
Review: It's been a year since his last release ("Strobe/Goliath" on his own Dom & Roland label) but boy has it been worth the wait... "Unofficial Jah" is astoundingly dark and textured with myriad levels of precision processed sound design. Rich in every aspect, it's Dom and his trusty Roland at their finest. "Outta Ends" is equally stunning. Much more pummelling in its dynamic make up, there's a strong feeling to the dark drums and loopy vocal sample. Dom & Roland kills it every single time, but this one is particularly special. Do not miss out.

Review: Metalheadz might be celebrating 25 years in the game in 2019, but they are not spending too much time looking back. Instead, Goldie's vital label continues to serve up forward looking drum & bass, this time from Jem One. A year after his debut on the label he's back with another varied three tracker. Form the swirling pads of liquid roller "Lotus" to the more angsty, tightly coiled drums of old school jungle cut "Transpose" and on to darkened minimal stepper "The Hardcore", there is a lot to love here.

The Prayer (Om Unit remix) (4:37)
Review: Almost three years old and To Have & Have Not continues to spawn fresh creativity. Blocks & Escher fire up the remix engine with a thunderstruck live drum shake-up of Jubei & Goldie's "The Prayer". Skeptical follows with a slightly swung twist to "Incognito" that thrusts Jerome's vocals further under the icy spotlight while Ulterior Motive add a little funk with cymbal splashes and reverbed FX on the synths. Finally Om Unit brings us back to where it all started as the foundation angst of "The Prayer" is simmered down into a cosmic halftime stew with a vibrant amen aftertaste. To not have "To Have & Have Not" would be criminal.

Review: Identified by GQ's Emcee Recordings many years ago, Jubei's been contributing to drum & bass with consistency and icy, industrial strength confidence since 2006. Repping on Metalheadz since 2010, a debut album has been long overdue... Naturally he's not disappointed. Here are selected highlights spread neatly across three 12"s. Ranging from the almost cosmic, far-gazing fusion of the Goldie co-lab "The Prayer" to the minimal dub-tech of "Neon Eyes" via the mournful soulful yearning of "Incognito", each track reps Jubei at his brightest, boldest and baddest. Essential for all D&B heads.

Review: Five years have passed since Artificial Intelligence last gave the world an album. The world of drum & bass has changed vastly since then, but they continue to plough their timeless path uncompromisingly. Like the first sampler, this EP features some very well selected guests (Terri Walker who has worked extensively with Spectrasoul and Swindle and the anonymous Dawn Wall) but the real stars are Zulu and Glenn. "Is This Real" is a purring double bass glider a la Full Cycle, "Scrolls" is a majestic diva-peppered dreamer (think early High Contrast or Logistics) "Justify" is a big old soul shock-out that's up there with their modern-classic "You Can Dream". Album hype doesn't get more beautiful than this.

Review: Peeping over the precipice of their second album, AI tease us with two unruly mood-setters. "Pass The Buck" features D&B's most consistent MC voice DRS who delivers in style over a stark understated bass tear that rips only when needed. Flip for an exclusive sampler-only collab with the ever-impressive SCAR: here the bass is anything but understated as it churns and groans and grizzles with twisted creativity. Two sure signs the album is going to be important when it drops later this month.

Review: Five years have passed since AI's debut album Stand Alone. Five years' worth waiting: After a string of universally received samplers, Glen and Zula finally unleash the whole set. Clearly in journey mode, the LP works really well as a listening experience as much as it does in the dance. From the gentle wafts and breezes of "Aroma" to the much darker DRS-drenched designs of "Pass The Buck" and the gritty, Metalheadz homage "The Source" back the majestic touches of two Dawn Wall collaborations, this is Artificial Intelligence at their most comprehensive and clear. Attention to detail has been paid to the finish of each track, ensuring a sheen and consistency that you really don't hear in drum & bass albums that often. Timeless.

Review: Despite a production history that stretches back to the turn of the millennium, Artificial Intelligence has only ever released one album, 2010's Stand Alone. Five years on, they return with a belated follow-up. Happily, they've skillfully avoided the pitfalls of "second album syndrome", delivering a rich, entertaining and soul-flecked set that arguably tops their impressive debut full-length. Heavily influenced by vintage jungle, classic liquid D&B and - more surprisingly - the celebratory pump of vintage Chicago house, Timeline is dancefloor-focused, but musically expansive enough to encourage home listening. They've roped in some great guests and collaborators, too, including Terri Walker, DRS, Sense and Dawn Wall.

Review: Two massive VIPs on one gargantuan 12"... Metalheadz sure know how to spoil us. First up is a stark, gritty twist on Jubei and dBridge's star-grasping "These Things". Boasting a darker underbelly than the original, it's an instant riot-charmer. Meanwhile on the flip AI finally unleash their special version of the Dillinja homage "Dillirious". With more emphasis on the drums and a bassline that's so brittle and disarming it could chill the devil himself, it sums up exactly why VIP culture has remained the gold standard in jungle since day one.

Review: Not content with making it to the finals of Masterchef, Survival's also been cooking up Michelin star level jungle with Script too. Make that five Michelin stars. Maybe even six... "The Wrong Side" is simply incredible. Concreted abstract jungle theatre with belting vocals from Naomi Pryor, this has potential to be a tune of the year. Deeper on the menu we find "Make 'Em Know", a one way ticket on the bludclart bus to the Leisure Lounge circa 97 before signing out with cosmic sax blasts and velvet harmonies from Hadwen & Higgins on the sublime "Beside Me". And if that's not quite enough, there's even a 2 Bad Mice remix. For reals. This really is too good to be true...
