Review: Drum & bass giants Hospital Records get involved with this year's Record Store Day by serving up a limited white vinyl that also serves as further 25th anniversary celebrations. This is on top of the huge 25 rack album that came back in March and features a load more essential remixes, reworks, VIPs and covers of NHS drum & bass classics. Together they serve as a fine snapshot of the label's past, present and future with Camo & Krooked, S.P.Y, Kings Of The Rollers, Lynx, Think Tonk, Kessler, Villem and The Caracal Project all coming correct.

Submotion Orchestra - "All Yours" (SPY remix)
Review: S.P.Y makes his highly anticipated debut on Hospital Records with Love & Hate, a four-track journey into the darkest depths of D&B with plenty of old skool influences, marking a return to core values and a pure sound. The title track is dominated by pounding sub bass stabs with moody atmospherics and twisted diva vocals. "Clouds" blends brooding virus synths with machine funk for a techstep banger, whilst "Sleepy Hollow" sees S.P.Y strip back production to a Detroit influenced sound with epic synths. The S.P.Y remix of Submotion Orchestra's "All Yours" rounds things off in style.

Review: Carlos "S.P.Y" Lima made his name by putting a decidedly positive spin on drum & bass, filling his 2012 debut album What The Future Holds with string-laden, post-liquid tracks that fused floor-filling rhythms with a breezy, carnival-friendly musicality. On this belated follow-up, the Brazilian producer flips the script, delivering a murkier - if no less beautifully produced - set filled with darker, moodier moments. Given his way with mood and rhythm, it's unsurprising to find that Back To Basics Volume 1 hits home hard. Whether laying down and tech-tinged late night roller ("Brooklyn (Dub)", "Jelly Belly"), a discordant freak-out ("Riding The Void") or an "Inner City Life" style vocal groover ("Dusty Fingers", featuring Diane Charlemagne), Lima is at the top of his game.

Review: S.P.Y's last album, the Drum&BassArena Award winning What The Future Holds, was outstanding and surged him to the very top of the D&B table where he's always belonged. Topping that was always going to be a challenge, but naturally he's delivered... And he's done so by going back underground and reminding us of the very stark, dynamic techniques that made drum & bass what it is. From the icy sheet metal muscle and Charlemagne's arresting quintessential D&B vocals on the title track right through to the gritty evils of "Rise Again", S.P.Y's studio command is second to none. An impeccable sophomore that refuses to compromise.

Review: Ever since first emerging back in 2006, S.P.Y has been tipped for the top. Producer Carlos Lima has always taken a grandiose, musically adventurous approach to drum and bass, marking him out in a scene filled with fly-by-night chancers and darkroom obsessives. It's fitting, perhaps, that this debut album is coming out on Hospital, a label that has long held positivity and fluidity as its core values. What The Future Holds is expansive and upbeat even by Hospital standards, packed with tracks that drip with shimmering strings, bold builds and glistening melodies. Of course, there are tougher and darker workouts - see the "Inner City Life"-ish "Analogue Dreams" and murky "Infiltrate - but these merely serve to emphasize the beauty showcased elsewhere.

Review: While many producers tend to mellow with age, Brazilian-in-Bristol S.PY has taken the opposite approach. His early productions were expansive affairs, musically rich and often smothered in soaring strings, but his most recent album, Back To Basics Chapter 1, was altogether more robust and rolling with clear early jungle influences. This speedy follow-up - a partner piece, if you will - is similarly dark and atmospheric, whilst retaining his ear for melody and love of liquid rhythms. So while the majority of the material spits and pops to the rhythm of classic jungle breaks and surging basslines, there are hints of grandeur amongst the basement beats. "Stardust" and the "Inner City Life"-ish "Lost Orbit", in particular, are amongst his most expansive tracks yet.

Review: TWO albums in less than six months? S.P.Y has been smashing it this year! More importantly, they've been killer albums, too. Here Hospital has handpicked four of the second album's many highlights. And, as the title suggests, they document his love for the roots that he fell in love with at the beginning. A lot of ground is covered; from the glistening synth raindrops of the Bcee-collaborated "Stardust" to the darker, Terminator-style "Heavy Metal" via the rushy jungle skips and breezes of "Guidance", S.P.Y truly is a master of his craft and understands the purest dynamics of the genre consummately.

Review: We've come accustomed to SPY serving up cinematic, soulful drum and bass, so there's something a little disarming to hear him revisiting his original jungle roots with an album that's as "back to basics" as the Brazilian producer may ever get. The 15 tracks that make up "Dubplate Style" are heavy, fuzzy, raw and punchy, with SPY peppering crunchy old school jungle rhythms with bombastic sub-bass, buzzing electronic riffs, sped-up hardcore style vocal samples, reggae toaster vocals, bouncy dub riffs and the kind of spine-tingling, warehouse-ready stabs more associated with turn-of-the-90s house than early UK jungle. The results are uniformly superb and joyously rush inducing, making this unashamedly retro-futurist affair one of SPY's most intoxicating albums to date.

Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y has been in fine form this year, churning out the hits at a rate of knots. Here he serves up five more slammers to round off the well-received Alone in the Dark trilogy. Opener "Transmission" is undeniably one of his moth forthright tunes to date - a bombastic, riot-inducing anthem fuelled by thunderous electro bass and mind-altering riffs. There's also a tech-tinged feel to the rave-meets-D&B heaviness of "Transmission", while "Dominator Mode" contains some of his toughest drums to date. Elsewhere, "Lockdown" is a buzzing hum of throbbing energy and "Dreaming" tips a wink to the producer's liquid past via a wonderfully sauced-eyed fusion of blissful musicality and tight bottom-end pressure.

Review: Hitting a remarkable 400 releases in their catalogue, the mighty Hospital Records enlist a whole spectrum of high grade link-ups to celebrate. First up is the bossman London Elektricity and Hozzy heavyweight S.P.Y on the prowling, purring 'Find Another Fool'. They're joined by Subwave, Bop and Degs on the cosmic soul vibe 'The Shade' before Makoto and Urbandawn get all hairy and ravey on the walloping Conrad-featured 'Magic Eyes'. Rounding up the EP comes the jazzy vocal yearns of 'Broken Bones' from Mitekiss and Whiney, Fred V and Loggy on a planet-bounding bruise-up with 'You Keep Me High' before Keeno and Polaris close the EP with skin-rippling operatic anthemia. Here's to another 400.

All of these will send you right back to the 2014-2016 era in which they were made. Review: Over the last decade, few drum & bass producers have impressed more than Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y. While his default setting seems to be summery, string-drenched and giddily soulful, he's also capable of delivering dark and weighty dancefloor onslaughts. Certainly, that seems to be the idea behind the Alone in the Dark series, which launched earlier this summer. There's naturally much to enjoy on this second double-pack in the series, from the booming sub-bass, scorching beats, wavy vocal samples and twinkling pianos of "Get Up" and aggressive, stripped-back moodiness of "Cold Wave" (complete with both industrial sounding riffs and pulsating sub-bass), to the hip-hop/dark jungle fusion of "Mind Over Matter" and ridiculously heavy opener "Termination".

Reso - "Voice From A Distance Star"
SPY - "Untold Future"
Review: Whilst now widely regarded as a towering institution of the drum and bass world, there was a time when Hospital Records' uniquely melodic brand of "disco D&B" was thrillingly cutting edge. Tony Colman's label drops this second vinyl sampler to accompany their impressive Fifteen Years of Hospital double CD compilation which sees the boundary smashing Reso line up for twelve inch duty with the ever excellent S.P.Y. Londoner Reso is no stranger to gnarly, corrosive productions and "Voice From A Distance Star" ranks alongside his most impressive tracks, effortlessly melding foundation worrying bass with dubstep swagger. It's matched by "Untold Future", S.P.Y.'s contribution on the flip which is typically dystopian in tone, unfurling into a noirish, tightly wound sci fi roller of the highest order.

Review: Following Etherwood and Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y is the next to step up to the "Hospital Mixtape" series with a walloping 31-track mix of which almost half has never been released before. As you'd expect from the bazillion dollar Brazilian, the range is wide with tendencies to gully. Essential exclusives you'd be an absolute madman not to check include his deep-swing twist on Digital's seminal "Deadline", the insane sub bass slipperiness on Random Movement's incredible "In Space No One Can Hear You Funk" and the "Up All Night" style late 90s slap down with his brother Unreal "Enduro". A proper mix and a previously unobtainable selection that's yours for the taking... What's not to love here?
