Cat: JC 019. Rel: 01 Jul 13

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Zunga (feat Rubi Dan)
No No No (Serial Killaz remix)
Review: Two hip-swinging jungle joints from booty-bass bootleg kings Deekline and Ed Solo... With Rubi Dan's inimitable chatter and chubby roll on the bass, "Zunga" is an instant 'sing along' smasher, saturated in reggae juice and sun dried on the Jamaican Blue Mountains. "No No No", meanwhile, sees the Dawn Penn classic go under the expert knives of the Serial Killaz. Bulging with bulbous bass, the skank factor is set to max and the vocal is positioned perfectly in the mix... You really can't fail with this.

Zumbar (6:20)
Temperance (7:08)
Review: Gone but absolutely not forgotten, Marcus Intalex still feels present in the drum & bass scene, such is his massive legacy. Given how much original copies still fetch, it feels right for his very first solo 12" on Soul:r to get a fresh airing and put paid to the sharks. 'Zumbar' leads the way on this two-tracker, carrying some of those ascendant Rhodes notes and dusty brass stabs that made for a new angle on soulful D&B. Sharper than liquid, and a touch fatter than the Full Cycle crew, Intalex struck on something special here. The same goes on the flip with 'Temperance', which leans in on the synths for an amen powered peak time rusher that hasn't aged a bit.

Zootie (Yavas mix)
Review: Rezzett may not be the most high profile name amongst the swelling discography of The Trilogy Tapes, but last year's self-titled 12? for Will Bankhead's label was arguably one of the imprint's highlights to date. The three tracks were a skewed combination of scratchy rhythms and frazzled melodies that took the description "lo-fi" to new places. It's up against some stiff competition but Zootie might be the finest looking TTT so far with numerous hand screen printed stamps adorning both the outer and inner sleeves. It's matched musically too as both "Zootie" and the accompanying "Yavas mix" applies Rezzett's blasted sonics and applies them to some wondrous ambient chords with the former throwing in some speaker blowing hardcore rhythms too.

La Revolocion
Line Dem Up (Murray Man remix)
Line Dem Up (original)
Review: French ragga vibes abound as Krak In Dub switches between vibrant fly-by-night skankwise festival D&B on "La Revolocion" and "Line Dem Up", a deep, swaggering digi-dancehall groove. Conscious, chorus-heavy and instantly likeable, your dancefloor will instantly feel they've known them forever. And for good measure, Murray Man has provided a slamming D&B mix of "Line Dem Up". Switching between dub breaks and something a lot darker and mechanical, you can file it under 'ragga ravaged tear up'.

Digital, YT & Solo Banton - "Bad Bwoy Talk" (3:21)
Review: The mighty Digital introduces a brand new Function off-shoot Function Dubz with a focus on ragga/vocal based jungle. Naturally, it's a hefty launch release: "Zion" is straight out of 1993, all head-twisted amens, crazy-sharp edits and evocative dub vocals. "Bad Bwoy Talk" brings us back to the future on a sleazy bubbly halftime roll and full badman chats from YT and Solo Banton. A full jungle history lesson in two tunes; few artists do it like Digital.

Tapout
Review: Two years have passed since this Brazilian/Swiss partnership last appeared on Dispatch. Naturally they've made up for lost time with two seismic slabs of peak time D&B. "Zero Tolerance" lives up to its name in every way: the minute your floor is subjected to the grimy, neuro distortions and mischievous hookiness of the bassline we guarantee you'll have them in the palm of your hand. "Tapout" is just a tad deeper; rolling with the perfect amount of iciness, the waspy bassline is stretched and warped with a great sense of fun and unpredictability. Just when you thought Optiv & BTK couldn't get any sharper... this is next level business.

No Era (Alex Jann Planet Transmit mix) (5:36)
No Era (Secret Universe Biosphere mix) (5:58)
Review: Adam Shelton returns to his breaks/electro alias A-Future once again with "No Era". Taking off where the launch release "Cybernetic" left us, it's another tense rolling jam that nods back to the very foundations but with added 2020 production punch. Think Tim Wright jamming with Ed DMX and you're on the right path. Remix-wise Alex Jann lays down a pacier, more layered set of rhythm logistics while mysterious alias Secret Universe closes with an authentic jungle reversion, imagine Tim Reaper in a chilled mode and you're on the right star-path.

Review: For his first release of 2020 ASC pays homage to mother nature's strongest push-me-pull-you - the "Zenith & Nadir" of the universe... And he does so in the form of a score to a movie that's yet to be made. A smouldering slo-mo analogue weave of synths and drum machines; from the synth-wave subtle triumph of "Anthe" to the unnerving, skin-rippling intro "Cryogenic" to the melancholy finale "The Milankovitch Cycles", he provides the sounds - you create the pictures.

Datafile (5:12)
Review: Sticky times call for sticky beats. Not content with delivering one of the highlights on his mate Degs' album, gully boy wonder Unglued returns with another full-blast, wide-range EP. "Zen" counters the ruff with the buff as Cimone's soaring vocals are coupled with the smelliest bassline possible. Elsewhere "Algorithm" is a gritty techno-influenced thumper, "Mic Strangler" will be a highlight for many thanks to the tremendous skills of GQ and squidgy Zinc-style basslines by Gluey himself. Finally "Datafile" takes us deep into the rave with a savage array of breaks and layers on layers of darkness.

Review: With their spiralling synth melodies, bombastic rhythms and attractive pop hooks, Austrian duo Camo and Krooked are fast becoming one of drum & bass's biggest attractions. Their sound - bold, attractive, brash and shot through with electronic funk - is a perfect fit with Hospital Records' current fascination with festival-friendly drum and bass. This fourth album for Tony Colman's veteran imprint delivers more smile-inducing thrills, offering the kind of fare that should find wider appeal outside the D&B scene. Unashamedly dancefloor-focused, Zeitgeist oozes positivity, from the tropical jungle of "Aurrora" and darkside pomp of "Ruhepuls", to the cut-up white-knuckle ride that is "Vice".

Dolorous
Review: "Dolorous" was a considered highlight of The Mesozoic Era, the 2010 LP from Alaska, aka scene veteran Dev Pandya, not least for the plaintive vocal contribution of Robert Manos. Fans will no doubt be delighted that the pair have elected to work together again with this 12" apparently an appetiser for a live show Manos and Pandya are busy readying. "Zeal" is as epic as you'd expect; great swooping orchestral movements complemented by crisp drum breaks and lent a dose of mournfulness by Manos' voice. In addition, this superbly presented 12" also features a reworked version of their former glory which strips down proceedings markedly, allowing the breakbeat centre stage.

DLR & Mako - "Seek Knowledge" (feat Rider Shafique)
Review: DLR and Mako: Now here's a drum & bass super duo that genuinely need no introduction! Two 12"s brandishing four tracks, two collaborations, and two originals. Both players and label have excelled themselves right here, as you'll instantly hear when the startling jazzy keys flurry in from nowhere on "Your Mind". Dig deeper for the sharp, steppy riddim of DLR's "10 Steps" and ice-cold synth washes and rhythmic human element manipulation of "Sense Of Wanting". Finally we climax with "Seek Knowledge". Featuring a stark sermon from Rider Shafique, it's an abyss-like halfstepper that's galvanised with industrial strength production that allows every element to resonate deeply. Open up "Your Mind" today!

Review: After taking a well-deserved break to bask in the reception to last year's debut album The Fourth Wall, South Coast pair James Davidson and Greg Hepworth are back on the 12" flex with this hefty new slab of Ulterior Motive badness for Metalheadz. Lead track "You're Next" pulls no punches thanks to a vicious lead Reese bassline that's got more snarl than a yard full of Rottweilers and some unpredictable drums. Complementing this, "Music City" bristles with sonic tension and energy, implementing similar levels of funk to Ulterior Motive's album cut "Sideways".

Be Good To The Ones (You Love)
Review: As argumentative as it sounds, we can say from the off that Klute got it wrong with the title of this release. It's totally not what we expected to hear from the head of Commercial Suicide as his first release of 2015, but then again who ever said "I love it when things stay exactly the same"? It's a melodic and tastalisingly tuneful delve into a more harmonious Klute domain, with "You Won't Like It" mixing tasty, techy bass rumbling with a disarmingly delicate melody. "Rays"'s beautiful hook bubbles and rolls over old school drums and finally "Be Good To The Ones (You Love)" finishes off the lush and dare we say it, lovely theme...albeit with a deeply addictive bassline. Guaranteed - you will like it.

Manic Minor
Review: We last saw Amit almost a year ago with the critically acclaimed 9 Times on the Commercial Suicide imprint, an album that brought together a unique blend of sounds and concepts and united them into one devilish whole. An overdue return is made possible via D Bridge's Exit Records, with You Look Better Dead, a two track 12" that proves to be equally stunning. The title track features some mournful vocals from Rani amidst a melancholic arrangement dominated by booming bass and rattling breaks. Proving his production mettle, Amit switches things up on the frenetic flip, with "Manic Minor" switching between the SFX bleeping, booming subs and barely there percussion.

Fracture - "Tunnel Track" (Mark System remix) (6:27)
Review: Wow, have we really had to wait five years for a new Mark System 12" on Warm Communications? Apparently so! You Gave Up My Love arrives with the Juno office stereo still giving Mark System's Final Approach LP for Exit some rotation and is a rather sublime slab of modern bass science. The title cut leads the way, pairing off the gentle vocals against the deep subs and enveloping basslines with instant classic results. Complementing this, the B side finds System squaring up against a Warm Comm classic in the shape of Fracture's "Tunnel Track" which flushes out the original's claustrophobic haze and lays down a luscious arrangement in its place whilst retaining some grit.

Review: Continuing their current vein of rich form via labels such as Metalheadz and UKF, AI let rip with four more emphatic D&B blinders. Each one tickles a different psyche of the dancefloor; "You Can Dream" is the radio-ready roller complete with soul smouldering vocals from the currently unavoidable Steo while "Let You Go" is a peak time, spine-melting injection of raw euphoria. If you're fonder of AI's darker side then head straight for both "Freedom Come" and "10 Outta 10"; both sporting two of the best MCs in the game, they're undiluted tear-ups that guarantee chaos.
