Track 6 (5:54)
Review: 10 PILLS MATE is on one hell of a roll in closing the year off; after Andrew Red Hand's absolute killers, here comes six more techno bruisers from newbie Faur. The young chap is in no mood to mess around, and it's clear that he means business given the raw jungle power of the opening "Track 1", and the jacking, tooled-up techno of "Track 2" and "Track 3", the latter of which slips steadily into a nightmarish wormhole of hypnotics and pure dread. "Track 4" is a loose, distorted arrangement while, on the flip, "Track 5" is totally dancefloor-bound with its stealthy techno slither, and "Track 6" ties this magnetic EP off with a rugged beat flex that reminds us of the golden days of the DJAX label. BAD-ASS.

The Mercenary (with Andy Skopes) (5:13)
A Break From Suspension (5:16)
Review: TC1's Dispatch Recordings label kicks off its second century of releases by welcoming back Mako, who last starred on the imprint back in 2014. During the three years he's been away, the experienced producer has showcased his wares on Metalheadz, Symmetry, and Warm Communications, amongst other labels. The two tracks here are typically weighty, with Mako's brilliant percussion programming and weighty basslines coming to the fore. We're particularly enjoying the A-side collaboration with Andy Skopes, "The Mercenary", which successfully builds into a rip-roaring dancefloor smasher following a deep and atmospheric start.

Review: Having emerged on the label in 2015 with Jack n Phil's "Past Present & Future" EPs, the shady Shadow Cartel have dented Basement's discography with a series of hurters such as "Feed Me Bass". Now back with a series of releases, it's the business through and through; "Spirit Of Africa" grumbles with a distorted reese bass, "Spirit Of The Shadows" rolls with intricate drum edits and a cool jungle feel while "No No No" hits with big cymbal-heavy drums and a vibey sample like an old A Sides record. Finally "Ghost" flips all the switches with a shimmering vocal adventure that sounds somewhere between Lamb and Wilkinson. The full spectrum.

Review: One of two four-track EPs from Basement's mysterious Shadow Cartel. There's some serious displays of versatility and breadth going on in their lab right now. "Everybody In The Place" is a unique take on rolling tech with subtle neuro elements, "For The Night" shoots us into the cosmos John B sci-fi style while "Higher" goes all 2 Bad Mice on us with its spine-tingling detuned synth riff and heavy percussive rolls on the breaks. "Stagger" shuts down the show on a jumpy flex with twisted glitches galore. Who's in?

Carlotta (Al Zanders remix) (8:01)
Oddity (Moomin remix) (6:20)
Review: The latest release from the reliable Wolf Music camp is a limited edition, hand-stamped affair, and features two previously unheard remixes of tracks from Casino Times' Familiar Circles full-length. On the A-side, Al Zanders does a stellar job reworking "Carlotta", in the process laying down a hypnotic, percussion rich deep house shuffler full of bright cowbell hits, sunset-friendly jazz guitar licks and bubbly electronic melodies. On the flip you'll find a more than pleasant surprise: a deep, dreamy and utterly beguiling drum & bass remix of "Oddity" from Smallville regular Moomin. Its expert combination of evocative musical elements and crispy, snare-driven D&B rhythms is reminiscent of the golden age of Bukem-style liquid D&B.

Run The Jewels (5:16)
Review: Respectfully honouring one Dillinja's finest tunes in their name and respectfully honouring our ears in their short-but-super-sweet output so far, DJ Slap's WOC imprint is kicking with serious statements of intent. Following Saxxon's launch, US firebrand Dave Owen takes over with three equally on-point compositions; "Breaking Through" sits somewhere between Utah Jazz and Need For Mirrors with its rushy pianos and wasp-like electrified bass sizzles, "Twin Stars" takes us deeper into a more soulful introspective thanks to its ghostly vocal moans and weeping strings, "Run The Jewels" shuts down the show with the biggest weapon in the cabinet... A gully, swampy tech funk roller with heavy halftime sensibilities. All bases covered, all shots fired... Bring on WOC3!

Review: Recently spotted shaking bones and souls on Inperspective, Dissident's 2017 Alphacut release gets a well needed reissue. Stepping between halftime, full pelt and ambient, the 12" is a vast bag of treats. "Flowhunt", "Soteria" and "Bricolage" all writhe around the snake-like halftime dynamic under heavy atmospherics, "Through The Eyes Of Ice" is a stark slice of beatless atmospherics while "Thelema" is a straight up neck-snapper. Glow big or glow home.

Review: Alive, kicking and whipping up the ghosts of rave, Eveson's Dead Man's Chest project continues to tap deep into the roots with modern day production muscle and dynamics. "Tears" is one for the rush crew: a one-way ticket to 1991, complete with authentic MC samples and breath-taking R&B vocal harmonies. "Rinsa" is more your 3am darkside joint. The type brock out Gachet or Doc Scott would have dropped back in the foundation era. Pranged, barbed and mean - your floor won't know what hit it.

Tech 2 (5:53)
Review: South Coast D&B sorts Ulterior Motive impressed with their 2014 debut album on Metalheadz, The Fourth Wall. Since then, they've released a handful of singles on Goldie, Kemistry and Storm's historic imprint. This two-tracker marks their debut for DJ Friction's Shogun Audio stable. It begins with "The Real", a punchy combination of sharp beats, mutant sub-bass, mangled electronics and tidy rap vocals from Ben Verse. While decent, it lacks the instant gratification of flipside "Jungle Jam", a love letter to the halcyon days of early D&B that boasts skittering jungle breakbeats, fittingly vintage vocal samples, and some speaker-bothering sub-bass.

Review: Back in the autumn, sometime Metalheadz regular Lenzman launched his own label, The North Quarter. Here he returns for a second outing, bringing with him a quartet of tasty tracks. IAMDDB lends a hand on the sweet, skittish and soulful opener "In My Mind" - all fizzing D&B breakbeats, tumbling piano lines and evocative vocals - before soul man Steo unfurls a heartfelt vocal on the similarly breezy "Tender Love". On the flip, you'll find the moody, urban-sounding D&B-rap roller "Park Hill" (which may or may not be a tribute to the infamously bleak Sheffield housing estate of the same name), and the jazzy D&B warmth of Subphonics' collaboration "Bayview".

Review: A special vinyl-only remix couplet from Critical's bashment professor Sam Binga. First-up the ever-sharp Sully jungles the dickens out of the Warrior Queen-front "Wasted Days", adding a whole hurricane of energy through the crafty edited breaks and cool sense unpredictability. Flip for a trip to Livity Sounds circa 2013 where Pev & Kowton laid down a delicate synth jam and Sam craftily brings it up to around 160, adds a few fluttering twists but loses none of its crystalline soul. Grab this while you can.

Review: Following releases on UVB-76 and A14, Pessimist makes his Osiris debut with a four-track adventure of broadsword designs. "Pagans" sets the tone naturally with a lean, linear step that can be traced throughout his work for the last seven years before "Astrous" and "Inner Circle" take us down much darker techno corridors in a similar way that Damon Kirkham might under his Jon Convex guise. "Mist" shrouds the finale in deep pads and a palpitating heartbeat drum and graveyard chords. Godlessly deep.

Sia and Sean Paul's huge 2016 smash "Cheap Thrills" gets a rolling subby fix-up that works way better through the speakers than it does in any description. Flip for a classical rewind as Jill Scott's sublime "It's Love" gets the treatment, contemporising the massiveness of Falcon & Dreazz's 2001 historic with more modern soulful twist. Instant dancefloor charmer.

Review: The voice of some of autonomic's finest dubs over the last year (notably on the latest Heartdrive mix), Alia Fresco makes her full debut. Produced by label boss and multi-alias auteur Damon Kirkham, aesthetically each of these four cuts fuse the duo's rawest, most powerful soul and future sound skills but it's how it's all brought together with an almost poppy sensibility. From the smouldering "Ordinary Thing" to sci-fi tropical dancehall "Let You Go" by way of the tub-thumping Sofie Letitre-style "Guys Like You" and the mindblowing gospel soul of "Break Me Out", it's a beautiful collection that lives in a space of its own. For heads, hearts and homes... This is the future.

Artilect - "Red Zone" (6:19)
Review: Ruffhouse & Gremlinz' label continues to stride into darkest of corners, ably soundtracking our future with fittingly paranoid, edgy, forward-thinking designs. Building on their matchless output last year, they ignite 2017 with friends old and new: Skitty returns with more oppressive business as "Rocka" loops with an insistent and tribal techno-like mindset while Manchester OG Artilect makes his label debut with a steppier shakedown "Red Zone". With its booming distorted bass punching with every kick and warped textures creating shades in the background, it's an instant smackback to 97 with raw authenticity.

Review: Devon duo Fred V and Grafix has been slowly building their career since 2009, with 2014 debut album Recognise thrusting them towards the higher echelons of the drum & bass community. Oxygen is their sophomore set, and builds on the attractive, soulful and melodious liquid D&B sound showcased on its' predecessor. A variety of vocalists - many with soft and folksy voices - take it in turns to add their distinctive tones to the duo's rolling rhythms, dreamy chords, shimmering synthesizers and mood-enhancing melodies. While there are plenty of tried-and-tested dancefloor numbers present - see the skittering "Rainbow Road" and radio-friendly "Living In The Past" - the album's most attractive feature is its' cozy, home listening feel.

Review: At last: Phil Tangent's back with his signature space-aged soul. Kicking off with "As Much As I Can Take", Hannah Eve softens the rough bass edges consummately as we rise and fall gracefully in a similar way to that of Integral bosses AI. Further into the wax we glide: "Drawing You" has that rich mid-noughties feel with a succinct vocal sample and layered instrumentation while "Illuminate" emphasises more drum thrust beneath cosmic pads. Deep dreamy and barbed with just the right amount of darkness... Phil's only fault is that he doesn't release as much as we'd like to him to.

Review: Pure unadulterated jungle choppage from Newcastle producer Champa B: "Reform" has so many edits, dices and splices it could easily be a Paradox record. With full focus on the drums there's just a smidgeon of space for airy pads and velvet subs. These classic signatures are maintained on the B as "Past & Present" subverts a snare roll to the point of obliteration while more dominant chords guarantee rushes for even the most hard-nosed junglist. It really doesn't get any more real than this.

An album many of us have known will be game changing since they arrived on the scene two years ago. First, though; the samplers... Review: Methlab: the agency behind some of the biggest names in tech D&B and innovative events around Europe continue their pact with Vegas & Maldini's Bad Taste imprint with the second instalment of in-house creations. As you'd expect, it's an all-out assault as Current Value leads the charge with a sizzling neuro racer "Pelham 212", the ever-innovative Billain tumbles behind with "Metal Jaws", a loose and frantic cut with drums that really shouldn't make sense, but definitely do. Elsewhere Optiv & Cza get gritty and abrasive on "Sub Surface" while Disprove, Signal and Audeka shove their middle fingers up at the space/time continuum with "Ritual". Brutal.

Review: Rewind to 2014: Nuage released a golden shore Balearic album that trembled with future wave and tropical echoes. Fast forward to 2016: Four of the album's many highlights are given the D&B treatment they deserve; Blu Mar Ten retain the humanised elements while adding a strong skip to the break while Nuage themselves switch the cascading harmony of "Waterfalls" into a pacier halftime/deep jungle hybrid. Bop follows with a spring microfunk shake up of the Afrobeat while the smoky introversions of "Shining" are flipped into something much more persistent and jazzy by The Levels. Bliss.

Hydraulic (10:19)
Review: D&B darling Rob Dimension does it again... Both "Automatik" and "Hydraulic" capture both sides of D&B's ever-flipping coin right now. The former tips a slight nod at Rob Swire with its space-aged vocal processing, hookiness and Sub Focus style hook while the latter takes us much deeper into the dance with a brutal techy swing. Serious mechanical mischief both tailored squarely for the biggest crowds.

The Space Between Remixes Vol 1
Cat: CODER 009. Rel: 21 Jun 16

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Satisfy (Bcee & Villem remix) (5:16)
Kanto (Quadrant remix) (5:47)
The Space Between (Method One remix) (5:50)
Review: California roller merchants BoS delivered one of 2015's finest D&B albums in the form of The Space Between. Now, as the LP dust begins to settle on the ever-developing D&B landscape, they've recruited some equally talented acts for a series of remixes.... Bcee & Villem twist up the bass and polish the strings on "Satisfy", Quadrant, meanwhile, adds a whole new level of dark drama to the deep dream dynamics of "Kanto" while Method One breaks down the album title track and rebuilds it somewhere off the second sun of Kepler-1647. Dive deep.

A Sides - "Atlantic" (5:26)
Will Miles - "Bass God" (5:17)
Review: American drum & bass is thriving right now and Elm Imprint is right in the eye of the storm with its monthly dispatches. This is the first time they've split artist duties across a 12" and it works a treat... Side A is all about A Sides with brash cymbal-splashing jungle roller while side B is all about the unstoppable Will Miles who pays homage to the 97-era techstep with brittle two-steps, gnarly bass plunges and a classic spoken sample. On-point.

Legion Of Boom EP
Cat: GF 016. Rel: 05 Jul 16

Footwork/Juke
Standard Affair (4:48)
Legion Of Boom (3:55)
Morro (dub) (4:26)
Dr Know (4:55)
Review: Addison Groove is always a great reminder that's it's not always DJ Rashad (RIP) and RP Boo that you need to look up for footwork. Hooking up with DJ Die on his Gutterfunk label the two chalk up four bangers, though some melodic moments are there to be found on B2 cut "Dr Know" which at some points almost sounds like a friendly throw back to classic DJ Marky. "Standard Affair" is frenetic but punctuated by snare-heavy break downs and 808 percussive bleeps. Indiana Jones referencing "Legion Of Boom" ups the tempo and funk with the most liquid cut on the EP while undoubtedly the biggest, baddest production here is the cut up vocals, spastic percussion, gun clacks and deep Rhodes of "Morro".

Calibre - "The Trot" (6:44)
Villem, McLeod & Hydro - "The Feels" (4:32)
SPY - "Be Strong" (5:07)
Chroma - "Deja Vu" (5:17)
Review: Total Science are one of the rare acts who have consistently delivered innovative music every single year since first emerging in '92. The very same can be said of their label CIA when it launched four years later. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Total Science have recruited kindred spirits from across the generations to contribute with equally forward-thinking cuts. Every artist delivers something special; S.P.Y gets ways deeper than he would on Hospital with "Be Strong", Calibre surpasses himself with his cool combination of sci-fi and soul on "The Trot" while The Invaderz work up their frothiest drum frenzy to date. 20 years is a long time in any game... In drum & bass it's several lifetimes. Both Total Science and CIA have soundtracked each one.

Over Out EP

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Over Out (4:18)
Torpedo Riddim (4:10)
King David Riddim (4:58)
Rolla (4:48)
Review: TMSV is hitting it hard this year. This is his third jungle-flecked release in as many months, having smashed it on Artikal and Rua Sound earlier this year. Now he's delivering the goods on Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge... And it's every bit as raw, choppy and dizzy as you want it to be. "Over Out" fires with relentless drum edits and vocal processes, "Torpedo Riddim" is lesson in molten lava bass, "King David Riddim" is all about the percussive textures while "Rolla" lives up to its name with some precision sample magic and kicks that bowl for days. Super sharp stuff, TMSV have been on such a roll.
