Review: Ray Keith is a drum & bass great, as well as being a relation to electronic great, Joy Orbison. As the title of this one suggest, his golden era was the mid-cities and to honour that the Kniteforce label serves up this comprehensive box set featuring 10 tracks all remastered from Dat and cut loud and clear view Ray's own personal cutting engineer. It is an unmissable selection including two dubplate mixes of 'The Terrorist' as well as VIP versions of 'Sing Time' and 'The Chopper'. There are also a few never before released, personally selected gems from Ray included.

Review: Now here's a treat for d&b heads on RSD 2023. Remastered and reissued for the first time since 2012, this deluxe and highly limited box set version of Wormhole sheds a whole new perspective on one of the genre's most pivotal and game-changing albums. A ground zero for many producers, the whole album captures a blueprint moment in dark, dystopian drum & bass that still carries just as much weight and tension as it did in 98. Each cut with a side of vinyl to itself, and a booklet to complete the deal, this is the type of package Wormhole always deserved.

Review: Marking label Critical Music's 20th birthday, they have compiled 22 tracks over 6 discs of the finest underground Drum n Bass has to offer, in a stunning limited box with designs by Steiner Grafik, with a special design on the sixth plate to commemorate the birthday. From breakbeat cuts by Calibre to more melodic vocal cuts by Envy, the biggest names in the label come together for this expertly curated and mastered compilation record following the label's takeover of Printworks back in March. The 6 discs span a wide, international selection of the different pockets and scenes that Drum n Bass inhabits, with just as many mind-melting amen breaks as there are smooth and subtle ambient d&b cuts. This box set is both a reminder of what makes Critical Music so respected, as well as a show of what we can expect in the future. Expect the unexpected and try not to blow your speakers out.

Review: Ray Keith is a stone cold drum & bass don with a great sound and maybe an even better look. Influential welcome the 21st Century Junglist for an album with that fitting title which spans no fewer than 10 sides of vinyl. It is fitting that a man with his legacy gets the space and time he deserves having helped to shape the genre so immeasurably. It finds the man draw on his peerless three decades knowledge, skill and talent to cook up a record packed with straight up and stylish jungle bangers that tick all the boxes and then some. This is the very definition of all killer no filler.

Review: 20 years deep and Steve Jefroy remains a leading light in the field of melodic, pop-minded D&B. He's toasting the anniversary of his BCee alias with this four-disc box set which looks over his career for a wealth of highlights. There's soulful swooners like 'Spirals' featuring the vocals of Solah, and the nifty singalong 'Let Go Of Love' featuring DRS' dulcet tones. These vocal performances are a vital part of the BCee sound, focusing on songwriting within a breakbeat context and coming up trumps every time. The hits are spread all over these eight sides, and there's even some fresh remixes from the likes of Kiril and Tim Reaper, making this a damn fine celebration of a producer who by rights should be a household name in and out of the D&B scene.

Review: Toronto besties Gremlinz and Jesta have been plotting, scheming and collaborating their entire adult lives - off and on - and releasing together consistently since 2018, but The Lee Garden Historical Preservation Society is their most significant creation to date. An ice cold web of tales and textures that digs deep into drum & bass music's most uncompromising and future-focused aesthetics, over 13 tracks they dig deep into a range of influences - techno ('Andromeda'), jungle ('Destro') and elements of grunge and trip hop on cuts such as 'Vermin' and 'After Dinner Coffee Face' are all in the mix but they forever keep the sonics tight and consistent. Metalheadz through and through.

Review: Finally! After the unfortunate leak in August the band executed a precision rejoinder and instantly released their critically-acclaimed second album digitally. We've been waiting for this luxury vinyl edition ever since... Four 12"s, boxed with a poster of their unique art: everything about this smacks of the level of detail they plough into their productions. Musically it's consistently on beat with every minutiae; the Clockwork Orange breaks of "Collider", the rusty robot KO punches of "Voodoo", the never-ending evangelic thrust of "Mantra", the hazy soul of "Motion Blur", the spiked slams and turbo synths of "The Entangled" - every one of the album's 18 tracks is here in all its glory and on vinyl where they should be. One of the best bass success stories of the year.

Review: He'll shake you, he'll stir you, he'll hurl you around the dancefloor with tunes you didn't know existed. It's David Double O, the co-founder of Rupture and one of the most stealth-like production ninjas the game has ever known. In operation for more years than you get for a multiple murder, he finally unleashes this debut LP and, to put things simply, it's a true lesson in foundational jungle craft. The space and rattles around the breaks on 'Testing Ground', the stark dark soul of 'Bad To Worse' and the absolute relentlessness of 'Riddim Yah' are three of many highlights. If you're a regular at Rupture you'll already have these deep in your psyche. Exemplary.

Review: Shogun duo Technicolour and Komatic cut their third album to deluxe wax comprising two white 12"s and two coloured 10"s... And it sounds every bit as good as it looks. Soulful yet varied in its scope and range, it's the most confident and clearest LP the duo have given us so far as it ranges from the darker, gnarlier minimal twists of "True Believer" to the more signature flourishing orchestration of cuts like "Weightless (feat Lucy Kitchen)" and naked introspection such as "The Nightfall (feat Jono McCleery)". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Potential drum & bass album of the year.

Highlights abound in every direction, notable compositions include Dreazz & Emery's Alice Russell-sampling "Riding High", a subtle VIP twist on Silence Groove's 2014 Bukem-esque soully roller "Playing With Fire" and the jazzy, loopy sample sprinkles of Paul SG's "Faso". Testament to Fokuz's curation and talent identification, this is a bold and ambitious release. Highly recommended.

Review: There is no more iconic figure in the world of drum & bass than Goldie. In fact, he has pretty much transitioned to natural treasure in the years since he operated at the genre's bleeding edge as a DJ, label boss of Metalheadz and producer. His Timeless album, now a hard to believe quarter of a century old, was his big breakthrough and took d&b into new realms. The epic title track will always be the benchmark by which all others are judged by the whole flow the record, precision beat work and lush synth sounds have rarely been bettered.

Some fresh, some classics, all soul warming, this captures the vibe and positive energy of Spearhead perfectly. What an excellent compilation.

Review: Goldie must have known he had done something special when he made his masterpiece because he gave it the perfect tittle. Timeless is the sort of album that transcends genres, eras and scenes. A quarter of a century after it was first written it still has the same impact that it did back then. The man himself as gone on to become a genuine national treasure with appearances in Eastenders, conducting orchestras, making documentaries for Sky Arts and much more. But it will surely always this record that remains his greatest piece of work.

As you'd expect, the end result is a timeless assault of lush grooves, soulful sonics and sweet skippy riddims. From the soft jazz insistency of "Honey Dew" to the hollowed harrowed bass tones of "Bellamee" via the harder, rave-referencing "Sagan" and the deep bass gurgles and DRS's reggae-style vocals on "Eschaton", the only issue here is the fact Calibre hasn't released them sooner. Unarguably incredible.

Flexing from all-out rave fire ('No Man', 'Acid Shot') to slinky heads-down bubblers ('Move In Silence') to purring soulful vibes ('Show Me') to percussive hypnosis hurters ('Falling') and back again via massive grizzly dancefloor blow-outs ('Calm'), the London-based Russian maverick has delivered a serious trip that keeps things 100% dancefloor, fully heavyweight, fully DJ friendly but totally sick to listen to as an album experience. Nine thumbs up.

Review: Litness the fitness! Witness this business... Yung Thugz returns with the full album he teased us with recently and it's a full-on rave odyssey from the off as the title track sledgehammers us with a big detuned rave riff. It's a full steam celebration of the foundations right through to the future throughout as cuts like the piano-primed 'Dissociative Funk', the ice cold prangy slapper 'United Kingdom', the acidic jazzy freak-out 'Overall Failure' and the far-out drum sorcery and cosmic flow of 'The Watchtower' all map out the album's most exciting parameters. Timeless, rooted in the foundations, but not dragging its feet in history for nostalgia's sake, Thugwidow isn't just lit... he's damn well on the money. Thug life is beautiful.

Review: The Netherlands's leading drum & bass community Liquicity has put together another of its bumper Escapsim collections. This 3 x 12" collection comes in a sweet trifold case and leans on an emotive and rolling brand of drum & bass. The grooves are fluid, there are plenty of tender keys and lush bitter sweet vocals that tug on the heart strings. Crash Comet & Dustkey's 'Berlin' is a particular highlight and Bert H's 'Vibechaser' conjures a melancholic mood that makes a lasting impact. The breaks on Rameses B's 'Escape' when paired with plaintive piano make for more memorable moments.

Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electro funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Now available on this beautiful triple vinyl format, he's back once again to take us on a trip through his influences and widescreen musical vision. Buckle up and be prepared to roll from full-on technoid d&b ('Hard Times') to bubbling, twisted funk ('Werk It') via smouldering, unclassifiable dark soul ('Ride Or Die') and dreamy breakbeats ('Standing By') With many other sides to his sound revealed throughout, this is an exceptional and very impressive album.

As a producer, he is no less on point and his debut album proves it. For the first time, it now gets pressed up across three slabs of coloured vinyl. It is part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations of RAM Records and was the record that really put Subby on the map. It mixes up underground jams like 'Deep Space' with his big classic cuts 'Rock It,' 'Timewarp,' 'Could This Be Real.' This limited pressing is a must-have for fans old and new.

It was a big success from the off and ended up hitting number 49 on the UK Albums Chart. It was re-issued again two years later with a bonus track and now it gets pressed up on pink marble wax. It is a great reminder of where this now stadium-filling live act has come from with standouts such as the collaboration with rapper Kano on 'Against All Odds' and single 'Pieces' featuring vocals from rapper Plan B.

Review: Astonishingly, a quarter of a century has now passed since The Prodigy released The Fat of the Land, the inspired rock-rave fusion opus that helped rocket the Essex combo towards superstardom and converted a whole generation of spotty indie kids to the joys of rambunctious rave music. It's certainly worthy of this limited-edition anniversary pressing, which comes on eye-catching silver-coloured vinyl. Of course, we all know the smash hits - the bustling, acid-flecked roll of 'Smack My Bitch Up', ultra-heavy 'Firestarter' and funky, low-slung 'Breathe' - but the set's lesser-celebrated moments, such as hip-hop jam 'Diesel Power', Meat Beat Manifesto-esque 'Serial Thrilla' and punky 'Fuel My Fire' have aged equally as well.

Review: 2019's Full Circle was a first long player from J MAJIK in over 20 years, and now he follows it up with another just 12 months after that one picked dup critical acclaim all over the internet. It continues on the same path he set out upon with that last record - a 90s tinged jungle nostalgia with chopped up amen breaks, lush synth soundscaping and euphoric grooves. Intense moments like the surging 'Dark Summer' and the crashing 'Velocity' are always calmed by more soulful rollers such as 'My Love', while 'Life Force' is more like a scuffed up deep house record outta Detroit. Whatever he turns his hands to, MAJIK doesn't disappoint.

Review: Ras Demo relick! One of jungle's longest standing vocalists - whose discography dates back to seminal SOUR dispatches in 1994 - sees his album Frequency getting a reboot on this vinyl edition. Highlights include his rising vocal insistency on the steppy bubbler 'Jungle Buss Me', the powerful toe-to-toe lyrics of 'Protect The Life' with Sizzla Kalonji and the wobbled-out bass and soulful vocals of the final fire that is 'When You Ready'. Complete with a big remix from rave pioneer DJ Phantasy, the frequencies are high on this one!

It was launched initially in 1996, out of a necessity as Total Science aka producers Q-Project & Spinback wanted somewhere for their own tunes. It soon expanded to take in the best in the game and many of them feature here. From the smooth Calibre remix to open, via the silky minimal soul of 'Break' and correctly titled 'Raggamuffin Bizness' from Digital, this is one essential collection.

Review: In today's climate, the term EP is surely one of the most misused by record labels; we've lost count of the number of two track 12"s that arrive at Juno HQ labelled as EPs in error by thems that don't know. Dutch drum and bass troupe Noisia are fully aware that it means Extended Play as this Purpose EP demonstrates with a full grip of some eight tracks slapped across four 12"s! Housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring artwork from Nik and Khomatech, Purpose features collaborations with contemporaries Phace, Prolix and Evol Intent. Noisia Fans will probably already have soaked up the viciously ill opening track "Oh Oh" and the remainder of the EP doesn't relent one bit with "Running Blind" a particular highlight.

Review: While their powers may have waned in recent years, there was a time when each new Autechre release was nigh on essential. This sumptuous box set from Warp revisits that time, collecting together all 47 tracks from their singles between 1991 and 2002. Naturally, it runs chronologically, beginning with their hard, rave-era floor fillers (see "Cavity Job") and early IDM experiments (various versions of the brilliant "Basscadet"), before moving on to the clattering rhythms of the Anvil Vapre and Envane EPs, the smacked-out bliss of Cichlisuite and the dystopian worlds of EP 7. Along the way there are two Peel Sessions, a raft of forgotten favourites and a skip load of cold and weary gems.

Review: Matt Stephenson and Sean Kelly's wildly imaginative Machine Girl project should need no introductions, but we'll assume ignorance and cut to the chase anyway. "Fucked-up electronic punk" was the term used by Stephenson in an interview with Revolver magazine, a rather admirable attempt to explain what was happening under the guise he created as a soloist in 2012, before drafting a partner for live percussion three years later.
WLFGRL landed just a year before that embryonic expansion, and in many ways feels much more like a 'dance music' record than what would follow. Tracks hit the nose on the head in terms of where club sounds were heading in just a few years after this arrived, essentially post-genre fusions of sound that owe as much to rave's formative years as they predict the beautifully chaotic and impossible to pigeonhole noises of today.

Review: 15 years! Time flies when you're flexing the full spectrum of drum & bass. Friction's label has been one of the 2000s' best independent D&B label success stories, spawning two super-strong generations of the genre in the process. So many of today's most influential acts came through under the Shogun wing and dominate the scene and this album reflects why that happened. From the shattering soul of Monrroe's "Never Too Old" and DJ Marky & Pola & Bryson's deep tech-influenced roller "Into The Blue" to the brilliantly dark (and titled) "Smelly Button" from Skeptical and SP and Proxima's brutal "Limestone", this album - presented in full on heavyweight vinyl - "15 Years Of Shogun Audio" digs deep into everything that's made it stay so consistent over the years and remain future-focused. Here's to another 15 years.

Review: German scientist Current Value elevates his 14th studio album to wax status and the world is a better place. Rolling out over two heavyweight 12"s, this particular body of work explores the relationship between drum & bass and techno in a whole rainbow of interesting and uncompromising ways. From the pummelling non-stop 4x4s of 'Greed' to the glitchy, rising frequencies and twisted emotions of the title track, each cut takes a snapshot or a pinch of ingredients, inspects them on a microscopic level and turns them inside out. Elsewhere cuts like 'TNM' melt your face off with thundering beats and momentous energy while other tracks such as 'Deep Mind' go straight for the cranial sensation and fry your brain within seconds. An exceptional exploration. No one does it like Current Value.

Originally released in 2003, this reissue showcases the Dutch producer's mastery of breakcore, jungle and hardcore techno. Review: After 16 years as a DJ and label owner, Kasra only released his debut EP in 2018. Now he's dropping albums dripping in high grade collabs. Gardna, Riko Dan, Yaano, Slay, VISLA, Killa P, T Man and Enei all play a role in this gully-fest as the Critical bossman rolls out a session of timeless styles. Highlights include the A.W.O.L style dark stepper 'Platinum', the Digital Soundboy flavoured 'Shatter' and the mesmerising smash of 2023 - 'BB.OO'. Dreamy. .

Review: DJ Trax takes perfect stock his sonic journey so far across this superb new album, Break From Reality. It features everything we have come to know and love from the man - rolling breaks, jazzy licks, hip-hop stylings and cinematic synths - but all served up in new and highly compelling ways. Dons of the game like Goldie and Loy have already been digging it and we are too, from the mad and unrelenting drum flurry of the opener to soul drenched breaks like 'Flame' and the acid jazz/4Hero era throwback sounds of 'Long Rhode Home' and its lush broken beats. A richly rewarding drum & bass album from one of the best in the game right now.

Review: Waggle your wonga gang! DLR is hitting the town and he's stacking up the paper with his third studio album Money Till I Got None. Of course when we say 'paper', we actually mean 'fat greasy d&b grooves', when we say 'stacking' we actually mean 'rolling out', and when we say 'waggle your wonga', we mean 'listen up you lot because this is one the genre's tightest, brightest groove sculptors at play and he's dealing it out like Noel Edmunds in Deal Or No Deal'. Seriously, this is super timeless tackle that nods in all the right directions; heavy, techy, funky, bruised with gritty robotic soul and all the other good things Sofa Sound stand for. And when we say that, we really mean it.

Review: Lenzman's last project on The North Quarter was four years ago, so his return to the label is welcome indeed. On this super double 12" which was written over the course of three months, the artist tackles the emotions and challenges of a total change of rhythm and routine. Having overcome a void of inspiration he excels here with a mix of old recordings and found sounds, collaborative tunes and fresh new bespoke piano recordings. It is a warm, rolling album full of soul, with hip hop and drum & bass coming together in perfect harmony.

Review: Andrea opened this sophomore album Due In Color mostly during 2020 and 2021. You may reverb that those times were slightly crazy due to the small matter of a pandemic which is what lead the artists to explore a world of more hazy and experimental jazz sounds. That in turn inspired him to use more acoustic sounds in his music and so this is a record that turns its back on dark and booming club spaces and heads instead towards blooming fields of expansive downtempo, textured ambient and dreamy soundscapes.

Review: Not to be confused with Arnie's character in Total Recall, this Quaid was best known for weaving delicate and deep d&b around the late 90s/early 2000s on labels such as Return To The Source and Seraphim. While his time in the scene was relatively short-lived, Quaid (AKA Ben Naylor) left a prominent mark on the deeper, 'chill' side of breakbeat and d&b. He also left a whole box of unreleased tracks on DAT, many of which you can enjoy right here for the first time ever. Atmospheric, at points almost ambient, but still kicking when it needs to. These stand the test of time incredibly well.

Review: Two years after dgoHn delivered his second studio album, Undesignated Proximate - a gloriously far-sighted fusion of drum & bass, IDM and experimental electronica - that set has been given the remix treatment. As you'd expect, it's a more versatile and eclectic affair, albeit one that keeps the hazy, outer-space ethos of the original set. It naturally boasts a wealth of fine alternative versions and re-imaginings, from the reverb-heavy, dubbed-out brilliance of Meat Beat Manifesto's take on 'Daisy Takes Two' and Wisp's sparkling, piano-laden D&B re-wire of 'Electryon', to Scrasse's insanely weighty tech-step revision of 'Conty', Djrum's jazz-wise jungle spin of 'Ninnyhammer' and Skee Mask's grandiose, IDM-goes-jungle version of 'Robin's Windmill'.

Review: Charlie Bierman returns with his fifth studio album and all is well with the world - The Digital World, that is. Featuring the likes of Singing Fats (RIP), Charli Brix, Fox, Lorna King, Liam Bailey and SP:MC, it's an exercise in how to smash every shade of full vocal d&b without losing a spec of focus from the dancefloor or the underground essence of this music. It's the sound Break has been carving diligently for many years now but honed and refined even more. From the most subtle of soulful pieces (the trembling sounds of 'Lost') to darkest of damagers (the gully grizzler 'Box Clever') this is an exceptional body of work from one of drum & bass music's most prominent benchmark setters.

Review: Wardown, the emotive and experimental project from Technimatic's Pete Rogers, releases its second LP on Blu Mar Ten Music. Where the debut Wardown album was a diary of smeared memory, musically recounting the author's childhood home and his subsequent feelings of dislocation from it, Wardown II expands on the themes of nostalgia and focuses on our collective reactions to a promised future that remains undelivered. Using aural scraps from that most optimistically futurist period, the 1950s & 1960s, Wardown weaves them into an uneasily dreamy, bittersweet commentary on postmodern nostalgia.

Review: Luke Beavon & Delroy Pottinger aka LSB & DRS presented their full length opus The Blue Hour back in 2019 on Beavon's Footnotes imprint. Almost a year and a half later, we are now treated to an impressive three pack vinyl series featuring a who's who of the scene, all lending their deft hand to the art of the remix. Highlights come from Irish legend Calibre and Dutchman Lenzman who respectively turn 'Frozen' and 'Stop The World' into proper late night steppers in their idiosyncratic style. Spearhead Records' Bcee channels the intelligent drum'n'bass sound of Good Looking Records circa 2001 on another soulful perspective of 'Frozen', while Technicolour & Komatic aka Technimatic take 'Scarred' into life-affirming territory with their Reese-driven roller.
