Shuriken Series Vol 6
Shuriken Series Vol 6 (limited purple vinyl 12")
Cat: SHA 176. Rel: 05 Jan 21

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Spor - "Aztec" (Calyx & Teebee remix) (4:28)
Alix Perez - "Forsaken" (feat Peven Everett & SpectraSoul - Calibre remix) (6:50)
Icicle - "Dreadnaught" (feat SP MC - Phace remix) (4:38)
Spectrasoul - "Glimpse" (feat DBridge - Ivy Lab remix) (4:42)
Review: Oh gosh! Shogun's special Shuriken vinyl series hits its sixth edition with some of the label's biggest remix bombs of yore. Calyx & Teebee's twist on Spor's game-changing 'Aztec' takes the lead and remains one of the best remixes the Ram duo have ever done. Calibre's take on Alix Perez, Spectrasoul and Peven Everett's 'Forsaken' is up there with the original in terms of its beauty and simplicity. Meanwhile on the B, Phace gives Icicle and SP:MC a total neuro shoeing before we end Ivy Lab's evergreen take on Spectrasoul & dBridge's 'Glimpse', arguably one of the finest cuts Shogun has ever released. Ready for the reload.

Out Of Time (feat Zara Kershaw) (5:15)
Never Too Old (feat Emily Makis) (5:20)
You Got Me (feat Alexa Harley) (6:26)
Everywhere I Go (4:47)
Review: Since signing to Shogun Audio a couple of years ago, Monrroe (real name Elijah Symons) has delivered a handful of lauded, digital only singles. Here he finally brings his brand of simmering, soulful and emotion-rich drum & bass to vinyl for the very first time. He begins with the hugely evocative and atmospheric 'Out of Time', where Zara Hawkshaw's heart-aching vocals ride a chunky, hot-stepping rhythm, warped bass and sensitive musical flourishes, before joining forces with singer Emily Makis on the bolder and heavier but no less dreamy 'Never Too Old'. Over on side B, Alexa Harley adds some loved-up vocals to the tough-but-immersive 'You Got Me', while 'Everywhere I Go' somehow manages to sound both summery and autumnal, while also offering booming bass and punchy D&B drums.

Review: With musical output spanning over a decade, Spirit is without doubt one of the most prolific artists to grace our scene. Shogun Audio welcome an individual that's been responsible for some classic material over the years, with his debut release on the Shogun Audio imprint being no exception. "Mind To Mind" is trademark Spirit at his finest. It has chunky drums, devastating bass and a break-down and switch that opens up the track up even more. Authentic bass stabs add a whole new twist to the equation. Strong DJ support has come from across the board, and includes: Friction, Goldie, DJ Marky, Zinc, Fabio, Flight and Alix Perez.

Review: Friction's Shogun imprint launch the Shuriken series; a deep dig into the vaults to give select tracks a little vinyl spotlight. Limited and not to be repressed, the inaugural volume is packed with four thick slabs of Shogun's broad pie on a delicious green 12" platter; Document One's unique bass tripper "LSD", GLXY & DRS's introspective "These Lights", Pola & Bryson's starlit take on "Porcelain" and the evergreen soulful wobbler "Burning" from the dream trio that is Serum, Paul T & Edward Oberon all map out the label's breadth and extremities with precision.

Review: Shogun duo Technicolour and Komatic cut their third album to deluxe wax comprising two white 12"s and two coloured 10"s... And it sounds every bit as good as it looks. Soulful yet varied in its scope and range, it's the most confident and clearest LP the duo have given us so far as it ranges from the darker, gnarlier minimal twists of "True Believer" to the more signature flourishing orchestration of cuts like "Weightless (feat Lucy Kitchen)" and naked introspection such as "The Nightfall (feat Jono McCleery)". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Potential drum & bass album of the year.

Review: Shogun Audio dig deep into the vaults once again for a collection of long-demanded vinyl outings. Taken from right across the label's broad spectrum, we kick off with Pola, Bryson & Charlotte Haining's anthem sing-along "Find Your Way" before GLX follow with one of their darkest steppers to date "Yes Jah". Meanwhile on the flip Mitekiss's piano-massaging dreamweaver "Some People" before Signal's hurricane vocal headbutt "How Will I Know You" shuts down the session in timeless style. Spor - "Aztec" (Calyx & Teebee remix) (4:30)
Review: Taken from Shogun's recent 10 years collection, here we find two of the label's stone cold classics twisted by two of the best remixers possible... Calibre does the honours on Perez's soulful stepper "Forsaken". Adding a seemingly endless roll to the drums and letting Peven Everett's vocal take centre stage, it's - typically - yet another essential Calibre moment. Flip for Calyx & Teebee's update on Spor's still futuristic slammer "Aztec". A gamechanger when it was released in 2009, C&T have paid total respect and added just the right touches to ensure its relevance in the game six years later.

Review: Shogun knows how to throw a party... Their "100" celebrations started in March and they're still going strong three months later! A chance for the label's artists and friends to stretch their skills and signatures, there's been some really exciting, subversion work throughout the series. This final piece in the puzzle is no exception; Fourward deliver their funkiest track to date, Karma gets all soulful, Total Science get all drifty and ethereal while Break simply reminds us why we love him. All four cuts glistening with long-lasting gold, Shogun can carry on celebrating their 100th release for as long as they like as far as we're concerned.

Foot Soldiers
Tingod
Review: Austrian four-piece Fourward are munching up Shogun vinyl credits like Elvis in his final foodie throes. Fresh from opening their monstrous 10 year collection, here they deliver two more crisp, lightening strike originals. "Foot Soldiers" is a gritty, angular Upbeats-style stamper that's super-charged with twisted acid lines. "Tingod" is more of a neuro-affair, rich in techno-like sensibilities, with a focus planted firmly on the stark, sinewy bass/kick rhythmic combo. Both primed for peaktime, Fourward are living up to their name more than ever before right now.

I Don't Mind (4:33)
Review: Their first single in two years, Spectrasoul return with the first tracks from their highly anticipated second album. "Always" is a sure-fire stunner thanks to its expert vocal sample use (both the lead and the backing chants) that's laid down over wonderfully tight rolling breaks and lush instrumentation. "I Don't Mind" reminds us of the duo's darker side as a soulful vocal cries out over a gritty, droning, distorted bassline that jitters and shakes rudely on the fills. Something tells us this is the start of a whole wealth of exceptional material from the south coast duo. We can't wait to hear the full album.

Review: Want to hear something that'll blow your complacent brains out? Get a load of this: Icicle and Friction have been in the studio together and created the sound of two planets colliding in the form of "Crucifix". Luckily this meeting of minds has been fully documented by Shogun Audio and packed up nicely into a perfect two parter release. On the other side, Friction joins the ever inspirational Technimatic fellas for "Floating Frames", a tune so soaringly, achingly beautiful it could bring entire civilisations to their knees. So it's fair to say this release has all aspects of universal domination covered.

Review: Friction's Shogun comes correct with this second Way Of The Warrior album. The whole set is peppered with cutlass-level bombs and here are six of its finest moments. From Mefjus's Noisia-level rub of "Jupiter" to the somnambulant steps, cosmic swirls and falsetto vocal delicacies of SpectraSoul's "Hearts" this showcases the labels rich range with detail and dedication. It also features the stunning stabby jitters of new signing Joe Ford. One of the hottest members to emerge in D&B lately, he's yet another indication of Shogun's current pulse fingers. Essential.

Battle Scars (feat Fourward Jakes)
Review: The inauguration of this Friction Versus series finds the Shogun Audio boss going back to his roots for a collection of collaborative cuts that are geared for a sole purpose: heady, heavyweight dancefloor abandonment. Lead track "Scatter" sees Friction teaming up with Total Science for a drum-heavy roller that shakes and rattles with infectious energy. "Battle Scars" proves to be just as deep an exercise in drum and bass and finds the Shogun main man working with label newcomers Fourward and it digs deep into the psyche of timeless drum and bass, no doubt helped by the distinctive tones of Jakes. Game over son.

Blueprint (feat Metropolis)
Playing Games (feat D Ablo)

Burn Out (feat Phace Misanthrop)
Review: If you judge a producer by their ability to successfully apply a winning formula to a variety of styles, Alix Perez is a master. While drum and bass remains his forte, there's enough on Chroma Chords, his second album, to suggest that he's growing as a producer. This 12" double pack discards with the synth laden head nodders featured on the full album, though the four tracks here do still demonstrate the versatile nature of Chroma Chords. Thus the grimy hip hop of the Metropolis featuring "Blue Print" share plate space with the soulful stepping action of "Playing Games" whilst the second 12" has the excellent vintage Timbaaland does half step of "Shadows" (featuring breakout Eglo talent Strange U") paired up with the vicious "Burnout".

Suspicious (feat Riya - Alix Perez remix)
Review: Drum & Bass legends Total Science add the Shogun Audio label to their stacked discography here, debuting in style with the double plated See Your Face EP. Longtime Total Science collaborator Riya lines the opening title track, adding a lush vocal element to a typically crisp arrangement from Smith and Greenhalgh, which contrasts nicely with the fractured Jungle abstractions of B Side ruffhouser "Hush Ya Mouth". Onto the second plate and the mood remains grizzly with the decidedly old skool business that is "Just Want You" whilst Side D sees Alix Perez turn in a remix of another Riya collaboration "Suspicious" trading the dark garage vibe of the digital only original in favour of something truly soulful.

K-Tee - "Hypnotize"
Teebee - "Lost"
Braekage & SP:MC - "The Lurgie"
Review: Laying down their signature production, the duo have created a funk-filled roller. Which, having been played by almost every major player within the scene, proves the magnitude of this track. "Hypnotize" highlights K-Tee’s musical qualities as a solo producer. Opening with epic intro chords that gradually make way for the haunting vocal, trademark reese and a spine-chilling breakdown, the drop does not disappoint. A strong gliding bass hits direct to the dancefloor, a timeless piece of music. Teebee can do no wrong, "Lost" is a one-track insight into the mind of one of D&B’s true milestone producers. The intro of enchanting pads and eerie effects contrasts beautifully with the twisted bass and synth stabs that follow. Crisp stepping beats, flawless yet gritty production combine to create another slab of classic Teebee wax. "The Lurgie" is truly one for the Headz! Beat Scientist breakage joins forces with the multitalented SP for a one-off reminisce of the hard-step D&B era. Stomping beats, murky atmospheres and a devastating drop bass create the pounding drive of this track.

Optiv & BTK's "Understand" is a floaty but furious vocal number, The Prototype's "Blackout" is the hardest cut they've released to date (we're talking Renegade Hardware levels of hard, here) Icicle's "Timer" is a hammer and tongs session with some serious techno mentality and Technimatic's "Solace" brings us back to the planet with grace; slinky and somnambulant, it's the perfect tonic to the madness.

Review: Rumours have been rife on this for well over two years now. Refusing to hurry as much as he refuses to compromise, Rockwell has taken his time and crafted one of the most distinctive, unique bass music albums: Obsolete Medium. Referencing ghetto-tech, classic hardcore (rave and punk) and formative jungle, every track, even the skits, justifies its place: from the torch-raising Banks-style leftfield ballad "Faces" through to the toxic waste bass and paranoia of "Guts/Bloods/Sex/Drugs" by way of the unadulterated rave mischief of "Please Please Please (Play This On The Radio)" and cosmiche bass of "Technoir", the whole album is detailed, precision articulated and full of surprises. Far from obsolete.

Review: Following the heat of "Foot Soldiers" and "Tingod" earlier this year, Fourward deliver another quad of uncompromised heaters. "Elektrik" pings and slaps with an elastic bassline and a funk that's countered by icy neuro synth elements. "Spike" goes for much more of a paranoid vibe with Spor-style drama, while "Sticks & Stones" references the jump-up sound with a Q&A bass that scuffs up and down the spectrum with sneering mischief. Finally the foursome show their emotional side with a piano-primed roller featuring Hybrid Minds' Grimm. A bona fide lighters-up affair, it's deeper side to Fourward we seldom see. All basses covered.

Review: Off the back of his remarkable second album, and a live show that features no laptops whatsoever, Icicle sits back and let's his equally talented peers do the hard work... Phace's remix of Icy's 2011 roller homage "Dreadnaught" has been discussed in hushed tones for years now, and the neuro don hasn't disappointed. Joe Ford turns into a suitably metallic, slippery twist on "Neutralize" while Dutch demons BSE give "The Edge" such a filth-over you need a hazmat suit to mix it. Finally Ulterior Motive get mucky on the already breath-taking vocal roller "Will You Be Mine". Four on-point remixes of an artist who can do no wrong right now. Essential.

Review: A brand new album series from Shogun, Point Of Origin was established purely to celebrate innovation at drum & bass's very forefront. The entire collection is stunning but here, for the vinyl release, they've picked four of the best; Ed:It's string seeping "Centre Suite" is an emotional roller that coasts with timeless sunny-side charm, Zero T (who makes his return to the label after many many years) lays down his trademark scuffed soul on "One For Me" while Dutch up-and-comer Posij lays down the perfect hissy-fit bassline over a razor-sharp turbo-charged two-step. Previously known as Technicolour and Komatic, since signing to Shogun as Technimatic, the duo has developed a stark liquid signature that's seeped in rich emotion and melody. Desire Paths is the zenith of their creative successes so far and is littered with highlights on every corner. From the swashing jungle breaks of "Beneath The Skies" to the resoundingly dark, twisted "Tectonic" via the slower, jazz-infused "Mucky Jeff", everything about this tingle with energy, passion and playability. Debut albums don't come any better than this.

INeedYou
1 2 3 4
Review: Shogun Audio boldly claim you wont hear anything else like "INeedU" from Rockwell, but it's a claim that stands up once you've made it through to the run out groove. Allegedly inspired by the mixtapes Rockwell listened to as a youth when house, disco and hardcore records were played vastly sped up, "INeedU" is a bastard amalgamation of sonic elements all played out at 170bpm 4/4 tempo and is guaranteed to have jaws dropping as well as eyebrows raising on the dancefloor. As ever Tom Green's peerless production techniques shine through. On the flip meanwhile, "1_2_3_4" picks up where Green left off with previous Shogun jammer "Detroit" with a totally brutal exercise in peaktime darkside deployment.

Entropy 4
Review: Three years on from his debut album Under The Ice, Dutchman Icicle commits another long player to the Shogun Audio cause in the shape of Entropy. Bass weight meets sound design on this ambitious 16 track set (spread across 2 slabs of vinyl here) as Jeroen Snik offers a compelling argument for his personal development since Under The Ice. What sets Entropy apart from most D&B long players at the moment is Snik's willingness to weave different stylistic elements into his productions with genuinely thrilling results. See the relentless, grime flecked nastiness of "Isolation" and the downbeat "Superimposed" for evidence, though there is still plenty of science fiction indebted bass futurism to satisfy the heads.

The Real (feat Ben Verse) (5:18)
Jungle Jam (6:26)
I Remember (feat James Sunderland) (5:42)
Tech 2 (5:53)
Review: South Coast D&B sorts Ulterior Motive impressed with their 2014 debut album on Metalheadz, The Fourth Wall. Since then, they've released a handful of singles on Goldie, Kemistry and Storm's historic imprint. This two-tracker marks their debut for DJ Friction's Shogun Audio stable. It begins with "The Real", a punchy combination of sharp beats, mutant sub-bass, mangled electronics and tidy rap vocals from Ben Verse. While decent, it lacks the instant gratification of flipside "Jungle Jam", a love letter to the halcyon days of early D&B that boasts skittering jungle breakbeats, fittingly vintage vocal samples, and some speaker-bothering sub-bass.

Review: Surely one of the most consistent-yet-stealthy operators on Shogun this year, cool-handed Eddie Ed.It delivers yet another barbed soul dispatch on Friction's stainless stable. With its mild dubby touches and heads-down focus there's more than a whiff of classic Total Science to "Babylon Step", "Heaven Sent You" keeps our focus firmly on the floor with a beautiful BMT style far-away vocal technique and grumbling, sludgy bassline, "South City" will be the highlight for many thanks to its sunset vocal harmonies and angular Break-style drop while "Isolution" closes the show on a much gnarlier note with its depth-plunge bass funk. Four examples of D&B properness right here

Pathways (5:20)
Viewpoint (5:40)
Night Creeper (feat Linguistics) (5:07)
All Away (feat Pennygiles) (5:41)
Review: Fresh from signing exclusively to Shogun Audio, Ed:It justifies his position on the Team Assassin with four rush-whittled rollers. "Pathways" is loaded with ghostly vocal textures and structured around a super sharp two-step, "Viewpoint" is a much bulkier affair with detailed drum work that's produced and positioned so well it sounds like your own personal drummer sitting right beside, in front and behind you. "Night Creeper" takes us deeper into the darkness with the careful lyrical guidance of Linguistics. Finally we climax to the techy rolls of "All Away". Penned with the help of Pennygiles, it's a smart way to end a sharp EP.

Review: Spectrasoul's 'Delay No More' receives its 10 Year Anniversary repress, with the pair's breakout album finally being pressed to vinyl for the first time. Originally released in 2012 but remarkably holding up even in 2022's ever-fluid neuro d'n'b soundscape (an impressive feat given how quickly the style moves), the album features classic tracks such as Calibre's widely recognised remix of 'Away With Me'.

Review: Five albums deep, DRS continues to smash the art of MCing through the glass ceilings, showcasing how far it can be taken. This time coming on strong with Shogun Audio, Del Rok Ski is a document of personal growth, development and sobriety for the Manchester legend as he teams up with a whole range of killer producers; T95, Dub Phizix, Disrupta, LSB, Dogger, Mindstate, Calibre, Monrroe, Document One and many other major league artists. Sharing more of his soul, telling more of his stories, bringing the soulful side of MCing and D&B to new levels, this is a whole new level from the man who fell to earth. Essential.

Drum & Bass / Jungle
GLXY - "Sweet Lows" (feat Rhi)
Koherent - "Endless Haze"
Linguistics - "Change" (feat Dogger & Mindstate & Blind Mic)
GEST - "Shame"
Review: The much-acclaimed Shuriken series might as well be the current pinnacle of drum n' bass V/A releasing - and it's all thanks to the experts over at Shogun Audio, who have their fingers in all the pies. On the eighth edition of the series, we're reminded of the fact that dn'b might just be one of the most challenging music styles to make - mega-compression, low-mid-boosted snap-snares and ultra-processed vocals all make themselves clear on GLXY's 'Sweet Lows', which is an ironic name since no part of the tune is a low. It becomes clear that Vol. 8 is an all-vocal affair: Koherent's 'Endless Haze' is a straight heavenly roller with insistences peppering the vocal mix that it's 'for you'. GEST's 'Shame', meanwhile, takes the other path - devilish reeses, maddening plucks, and lost and desperate voices urging us to hang our heads.
