808 The Bassqueen (Queen Of Bass mix)
808 The Bassqueen (extended Loop)
808 The Bassqueen (Dubstar'z shorthack)
Review: First of all, wow, how did this one already turn a quarter of a century old? It still sounds as wildly inventive now as it did back then and is fully deserving of this reissue. '808 The Bassqueen' is a truly mesmerising sonic journey that pushes the boundaries of electronic music with Villalobos's trademark blend of minimal techno and experimental soundscapes. He crafts a hypnotic and immersive mix of intricate rhythms, pulsating basslines, and deft synth textures that defy categorization and showcase Villalobos's mastery of groove and his ability to captivate listeners with subtle yet powerful sonic manipulations. This is the sound of a true visionary at work.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

We're never short of new Ricardo Villalobos material and he's generous with his time as a mixer, but this project offers something different from the Chilean mad scientist of minimal. A Mountain Of One are a duo who deal in Balearic-leaning pop with a subtle charm and an adventurous spirit, and they initially approached Villalobos for a single remix of one of their tracks. As a fan of their sound, Villalobos ran with the project and it wound up as a full remix album of seven different versions. On the earlier tracks Ricardo takes a surprisingly light touch, while the later stages find us knee deep in the mesmerising roll of his minimal house, shot through with dubbed out ingredients from the original songs. It's surprising and satisfying in equal measure, showing Villalobos at his best and quite the scoop for A Mountain Of One.

Baby (12:02)
Hansup (2:21)
Review: **RAUM REPRESS** Although Ricardo Villalobos has already appeared on Raum Musik under the RiRom moniker together with Roman Flugel, the Baby EP is his first full release for the label. The title track sees a firm kick and wood block snares forming the backbone for a drifting piano chord and sensual vocals which lead to a climax of delightfully glitchy vocoder. On the flip, "hansup" takes on a tougher groove, as sprung bass and minimal house stabs are joined by ethereal chords and twisted vocal samples.

Review: In the sprawling tendrils of minimal mastery Ricardo Villalobos has attached his name to, it's not always easy to pick out the stone cold classics. 2003 album Alcachofa is, however, a stand out moment from his career when he proved to be more than just a club 12" artist. Sure, the record is mainly driven by house rhythms, but this was a demonstration of the creative power within the minimal approach and Villalobos could get creative more than most. Originally released on Playhouse and now repressed on four 12"s by Perlon, it's a fitting tribute to a landmark record, now with added tracks from the accompanying Alcachofa Tools 12".

Andrew Weatherall - "Fourteen" (7:52)
Ricardo Villalobos - "Fourteen" (remix) (12:57)
Review: Last year DisDat dipped into Andrew Weatherall's archive of unreleased music and unleashed 'Y.W Eleven', a deliciously chuggy, druggy, synth-heavy affair that sounded like the late producer's take on 'Enjoy The Silence'-era Depeche Mode after a fistful of hallucinogenic mushrooms. 'Y.W Fourteen', a kind of sequel mined from the same source, is a little breezier and quietly Balearic in tone, with attractively fluttering synth lines bubbling away atop a crunchy, mid-tempo electro beat and intergalactic electronics. The accompanying remix comes from the effervescent Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully re-imagines the track as a rubbery, bass-heavy chunk of locked-in dancefloor minimalism in his distinctively wonky-but-funky, otherworldly style.

The a-side of Perlon release number 22, "Bredow" takes the listener on a never-ending trip that reaches its unexpected climax in a sophisticated piano solo. On the flipside, ultralow frequencies meet South American rhythm structures in the bass-driven sound-monster entitled "Damm3".

Review: Four brand new songs in the quite luxury format of 2x12". Yummy. "What's Wrong My Friends?" is the general question asked in the opening track. On the flipside "Gugga Sempa" introduces the sub flute, a rare instrument dating back to the bass-age. The second record of the double pack holds a rough percussive monster entitled "Africolaps", as well as "Dummolator", an instant 14-minute hypnosis.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos' first release for Luciano's Cadenza imprint sees another deeply engrossing development of sound, forever moving away from minimal with increasingly deep, complex rhythmic structures and the kind of subtle melodic shifts that classics are made of. Instead of techno's conventional 4- and 8- and 16- bar figures, the tracks on this doublepack create their own time signatures, sounding like careful edits lifted from Villalobos' spiralling live sessions, where loops uncoil into long, slinky springs. This is a brilliantly moody record - contemplative, melancholy, sometimes emphasizing an all-encompassing psychedelia reminiscent of Krautrock, the Chilean progressive folk/rock of Los Jaivas, and even Southeast Asian string music. Highly recommended.

Review: First release from the forthcoming compilation "Silverbird Casino". Exclusive and unreleased tracks by Ricardo Villalobos and Henrik Schwarz! Ten years ago Henrik produced a track called "Jimis", an epic, distorted but funky techno masterpiece that owed as much to Jeff Mills as to Jimmy Hendrix. The track exploded on the dancefloors worldwide after being released on Berlin's Diamonds and Pearls in 2002. After listening to the track again, Henrik decided it needs and new 2006 treatment. Ricardo Villalobos dived deep into his very own sound universe again hypnotic, minimal, polyrhythmic and full of surprising ideas.

Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer - "Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer Meet Tshetsha Boys"
Peverelist - "Peverelist Meets Tshetsha Boys"
Review: Another edition of the Honest Jon's Shangaan Electro remix project arrives with suitably illuminating results as Villalobos & Max Loderbauer and Peverelist tackle the Tshetsha Boys. Ricky V's collaborative take on "Nwa Pfundla" with Loderbauer is as stripped back as you'd expect, though as the dubby gurgle develops familiar strains of the energising original emerge, but never quite escape the scratchy electronic fuzz. The accompanying revision from Punch Drunk boss Peverelist is even more removed from the uptempo origins, commencing in dramatic fashion with dubby industrial textures before settling into a crashing 4x4 flex poised at circa 120bpm. Gradually snippets of Tshetsha Boys melodies emerge and meld the Peverelist rhythms which gain some energising impetus when those hats lock in.

Emilio (2nd Minimoonstar)
Review: Ricky V's return to Perlon this year! That's correct, some four years on from his last appearance for the Frankfurt label, Villalobos returns with a two track 12" housed in those distinctive Perlon colours that precede the release of the Chilean's fifth studio LP later this summer. While Ricardo has been in experimental mood of late - see the Shangaan Electro remix or the Re: ECM album he completed with Max Loderbauer - both tracks here are very much in the canon of trademark Villalobos productions. Lead track "Any Ideas" plays around with the repetition of a vocal sample over stretched out textures that veer into mind bend territory whilst the pitter patter groove at times sounds like a ping pong game in action. On the flip "Emilio (2nd Minimoonstar)" is reminiscent of a ZX Spectrum having a meltdown in time to a minimal bump.

Review: Jay Haze recently announced he was turning his back on the music industry, but despite his disillusionment he seems intent on signing off in style. With his latest album set to drop imminently, we are treated to this star studded12 inch entitled Collabs With Jay Haze. Ricardo Villalobos, Reboot, DJ Sneak and Brett Johnson all feature, with the joint studio sessions having all taken place at the now extinct Ultradope Syndrome studio in Berlin. The gentle bump of the Villalobos hookup "Fenlow" will understandably attract much attention, but it's the synth laden "Freak A Bitch Out", featuring the knob twiddling talents of DJ Sneak, that has us most excited, sounding like what Virgo would come with if they moved to Berlin.

Review: Before you Villalobos fans approach a coronary at the sight of a new Ric Y Martin release, it should be noted that this Alphahouse twelve actually contains two unreleased cuts from 1999 when Schopf and Ricky were in their mnmlst pomp. Completists will snap it up without hesitation, with both "Camina Ensenada" and "Teiwass" near perfect examples of the minimal art form - delicate stripped back syncopation surrounded by scratched tones and dreamlike soundscapes that have a narcotic effect on the senses. This gets bonus points for the freaky deaky cover art from Russian artiste Varya Pavlova too.

Roric
Review: **RAUM REPRESS** The pairing of Ricardo Villalobos & Roman Flugel on Raum Musik is hardly a surprising one. Both are venerable members of the electronic music scene, and we've witnessed both artists visit minimalism, techno, house and ambience within their careers on numerous occasions. Together on Raum, "RIRom" embodies a collection of all of the above genres in one. Minimal clicks and cuts of glass are met with raw housey claps, hollow techno kicks and gentle acoustic piano chords. Chugging and never dull on the ear, it's a concoction of intelligent, stripped back structure. On the flip side "RoRic" treads slightly more theatrical boards with dark rumbling keys and twisted crackles and creeks. An ever pushing bounce of dry drums and the odd stab of keys and warped vocals keep things interesting. Very much suited to both of these artists, if you're a fan of one or both, this won't disappoint.

Review: Using the Turkish psychedelic project Insanlar as a jump off point, Honest Jon's have enlisted Ricardo Villalobos to turn out one of his grandiose remix projects that gels so naturally with more exotic sound sources. The original of "Kime Ne" is already an enchanting, Moog-infused groover rich with traditional vocals, and then Mr Villalobos locks the ingredients in for a typically cosmic ride into stripped and hypnotic house territory, letting the lutes intertwine with dusty reams of percussion using that alchemists touch that could only come the man himself. The remix spreads itself over two sides of wax, leaving one side of the double pack free for a fetching etching as well.

Review:  Alcachofa, Ricardo Villalobos's 2013 debut LP for Playhouse, is rightly considered a classic of the minimal style and there remains a clamour for a repress today despite the fact one arrived only four years ago. Whilst that is nowhere in sight, the Chilean has elected to pick out two highlights of the album for re-release on his irregular label Sei Es Drum. Any self-respecting techno scholar should be more than familiar with the wistful abstraction of "Easy Lee" and the romantic minimalist bliss of "Dexter". Expect to hear these out again in the clubs over the coming months.

Review: Germany's Rawax, aside from its reissue offshoot, has usually released up and coming artists in the house and techno domains but the label are back with something pretty special for the first chapter of their newly crowned Aira series. Ricardo Villalobos, a man who needs no introduction in the minimal techno game and who sells clubs out week in and week out all over the world, drops "Rabbit Over", a familiarly itchy Villalobos groove with intricate melodic patterns and a driving beat structure. On the flip, Oskar Szafraniec's "Vitality" is similarly stripped and jagged around the edges, a monstrous bassline dominating its bottom-end. Another fine slice of Rawax and an impressive evolution from the label!

Who Are You? (feat Jorge Gonzalez) (8:58)
Review: A return to Raum Musik for Ricardo Villalobos arrives with the Chilean in the midst of one of his most creative production streaks. Who Are We lands before a mooted Vilod LP on Perlon from Villalobos and Max Loderbauer and after remixes for Honest Jon's and a contribution to the Aira Series from Roland and Rawax. It is of course his second 12" for Raum following the classic Baby from 2012 and these two new productions find him in a collaborative mood. "Buffalo Demon" features Rune Grammofon duo Alog whilst the title track pairs Villalobos up with compatriot Jorge Gonzalez. Both are superb, but "Who Are You?" is Villalobos channelling his weirder side and that's how we like our Ricardo tracks.

Review: With a dizzying catalogue of work behind both of them, Ricardo Villalobos and Butch form a partnership for the former's Sei Es Drum and the results are nothing short of startling. "Up" is a show-stopping track through and through, as a delirious synth rises constantly over some vintage 80s tom fills for a truly mind-bending experience. "Balam" by way of stark contrast is a stripped down tech house snake, putting some bubbling acid on to simmer while chopping up an intricate and persistent beat. It's high quality leftfield house for those who like their ideas fresh and freaky.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos's third full-length (unless you count his Fabric mix and Re: ECM project with Max Loderbauer) entitled Dependent & Happy had been eagerly anticipated since its announcement early this year, and on its vinyl release finds its 14 tracks split up across 5x12" singles. The results are as sublime as you would expect from the master of minimal; "Tu Actitud" opens with its half-spoken vocals and jaunty electric bass, "Timemorf" continues with its minimal Chilean rhythms, while "Grumax" is the undisputed highlight - a combination of tense, sprung bass and discordant strings arranged in the way only Villalobos can.

Review: The second of two EPs collecting Ricardo Villalobos's third album Dependent & Happy saw the producer go further in with the tunnelling grooves, with six tracks that take an explicitly darker turn than the first EP. "Zuipox" consists of micro bass and skewed vocal echoes, while "Kehaus" takes things in as ravey a direction as the producer goes with its insistent bass stab and rolling percussion and "Die Schwarze Massai" takes a more syncopated approach with it's complex rhythm and dreamy chords. "Put Your Lips" takes an insistent vocal snippet and welds a solid 4/4 groove to it with very little else. "Samma" however is the real killer, a melancholic combination of spring loaded percussion and chords warped out of shape.

Review: The final chapter of Senor Villalobos' third full-length LP came in the form of an A and B side - two tracks which end Dependent & Happy in true Villalobian fashion. "Defixia" is an irresistibly skippy trail of gentle snares and even more amiable melodies. The closing track, "Koito" continues this new found harmonic style by Ricardo, adding a hefty dosage of sub-aquatic synth bleeps all complete with his trademark percussion.
