Review: After impressing with 12" excursions on IBR and Beats In Space, Matt Karmil transfers to the long-playing format for the first time. The Cologne producer's distinctive take on deep house - loose but hypnotic, featuring enveloping chords, scratchy found sounds and wonky, off-kilter rhythms - certainly suits the album format, making this debut something of a surprise winner. Karmil is at his best when lacing simple, hypnotic melodies over ultra-deep grooves, as on the enticing "Live The Dream" and "Frankrike (Float)". Yet it's arguably the album's more intriguing moments - the cut-up deep techno pulse of "Holding" and dub techno-influenced "A Lot To Share" - that catch the ear the most. Either way, it's a pretty strong debut. This LP edition comes packing the album on CD too.

Review: This acid tech-trance gem was first released in 1996, and first made an appearance on the suitably Star Trek-themed Spock Records, an Italian label that saw to much trance of the utmost quality get released during its Italo heyday. The victim of horrible scalping, it's well overdue for a rerelease. 'Fun-K' is the highlight, showing off producer Bhasmantam's (Gieuseppe Pol's) sensitive and detail-oriented trance production chops, straddling euphoria and technicality in a manner that does not alienate or confuse. The remaining tunes are more breathable and minimal affairs, but all build a world that captivate as they do enthrall.

Review: Soul Brother Records' Record Store Day 2020 release offers up re-mastered versions of two hard-to-find early 'disco mixes' of modern soul-era gems. On the A-side you'll find Tom Moulton's scarce, five-minute club version of soul man Bobby Moore's '(Call Me Your) Anything Man', a delightfully orchestrated and super-sweet dancefloor workout built around a Latin-tinged groove reminiscent of Grace Jones' 'La Vie En Rose', which of course Moulton later famously remixed. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour West End Records' boss Mel Cheren's wonderfully over-the-top dancefloor extension of obscure vocal group Sweet Music's soaring cover of K.C & The Sunshine Band favourite 'I Get Lifted'. It's very different to their much-loved take, but every bit as essential.

Review: As we head into summer we are more than ready to re-load our record bags with this sort of compilation - collections of tunes that even in a grimy back yard in the north of England can bring a bit of sun kissed Balearic sound to a BBQ. The artwork alone gives you a strong impression of what to expect froths one and the music doesn't disappoint. It is a rich and evocative soundscape put together by the fine talents that are Giovanni Santucci and LucaEffeSunset. They take us to Mexican jungle, Brazilian beaches and all over Southern Italy with some sublime sounds.

Review: American composer Mary Jane Leach is a composer/performer who works with the physicality of sound, its acoustic properties and how they interact with space. She has played an instrumental role in NYC's pioneering Downtown avant-garde community since the 70s, working alongside peers including Arthur Russell, Ellen Fullman, Peter Zummo, Philip Corner and Arnold Dreyblatt. The four recordings featured here on her fourth album entitled (f)lute songs feature Italian flautist Manuel Zurria, and spans a period of over 30 years inspired by her fascination with sound and performance.

Review: 1981's (Gida-Gida) Tight & Tidy by Ambiance is a rare-as-hens-teeth LP that has just been in the bags of serious collectors for too long. Led by saxophonist Daoud Abubakar Balewa, this singular work of jazz fusion has been the product of serious training and attention from the likes of Frank Mitchell and Jackie McLean but, like so many incredible albums from that era, you could say that it has been lost in the mix; thankfully, High Jazz have done us the favour of remastering and reissuing. The sax features prominently on this sublime piece of work, but the arrangements are loose, free-minded and even considerably spiritual in look-and-feel.
