Review: Le Motel, le hotel, les Holiday Inns. Wherever you choose to stay after your raving trip, be sure to pack this wonderful collection from the innovative Belgian craftsman Le Motel. Delivered by the ever-impressive Yuku collective, the whole EP flexes the spectrum in terms of tempos and influences. From the deep ploughman techno swing of 'Raving Crew' to the electroid funk and percussive fire of 'Helix' via the cumbia-inspired and turns of the minimal head-bender '429 Too Many Requests', this is an exceptional journey into the more esoteric side of breaks and club music. Essential.

Review: Cairo's trip hop, illbient and club beat maker Hashem L Kelesh aka Dijit brings totters a whole decade of home-based musical experiments on this new album from the superb Youth label. It is littered with vocals from Deedz, 7aleeb, and Lella who add human nuance to lush smeared chords and downbeat rhythms. It's a kaleidoscope of sound with several different genres overlapping (from Eno-style ambient to folk-y prayers and electric lullabies), melting into one another and making for an immersive listen that is late-night and low-slung.

Review: Stefano Galli returns to Youth to follow up on his 2019 album Fading Summer with further explorations in the hinterland between experimental electronica, ambient and dub. Creating languid loops and toying with artful noise, Beautiful Age is a vivid listening experience which operates according to its own logic. Dislocated beat passages give way to tape-wrecked new age laments and FM synthesis from parts unknown, winding up in an idiosyncratic record which does credit to Youth's continued commitment to bringing us strange new sounds conjured by curious minds.

Boy Sent From Above (13:26)
Review: Burial drops his latest two-tracker on XL, two chaotic breakbeat balancing acts firmly rooted in rushy UK 'ardkore and day-glo 80s freestyle respectively. The A is a nail-biting, cavernous tweak out, which Burial pipes out into the darkest, most paranoid corners of the rave, exhuming frazzled dancers and inducing a queasy euphoria that any seasoned hedonists will recognise all too well. 'Boy Sent From Above', on the other hand seems to chart the passage of an obsessive, icy winter graff mission, with tinny drum machines, saccharine squarewave arpeggio hooks and spraycan samples harking back to the heyday of B-Boy electro, Miami freestyle and NYC breaking with devastating efficacy, albeit seen through Burial's unmistakeable misty-eyed LDN gauze; chrome and black over day-glo. Dreamfear marks yet another welcome switch up in Burial's artistic direction, and makes for one of the most evocative, moving and transporting entries in his much pored-over catalogue.

Review: Lo-fi industrial experimentation from Michigan outfit Wolf Eyes, who by this point had already become renowned for their strange avant-garde approach to a genre that hasn't exactly played things by the books for the most part. Those looking for tunes to unwind to need not apply, while those in search of something that pushes the boundaries of sound, not to mention song craft, will likely feel right at home. Originally recorded in 2000 in Ann Arbor, something of musical hotbed in the Motor City state, this challenging five track collection was laid down on a two-track reel-to-reel and feels almost handmade. Packed full of distortion, subtle discordance, interference substituting melody, and a constant love for the abrasive, it's a benchmark-setting example of what makes these guys so vital, incomparable and insane.

Review: Shackleton makes music like no other - tightly intertwined experiential rhythms that often have dark, gothic, underworld and ancient ritualistic overtones. He's made records alone and in collab with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and, earlier this year, Scotch Rolex. Now he's back on his own Woe To The Septic Heart label with The Scandal Of Time, a first long player since 2021's Departing Like Rivers. Anna Gerth features on some of the cuts and Shackleton says this will be his last for a while. It's dubby, lo-fi, drone-y and full of shadows. See 'Faraway Flowers' for intense industrial ambient, or 'Abend Wird Es Wieder' for more hallucinatory and suspensory sounds.

Review: Seoul-based duo Salamanda clearly struck upon a persuasive formula when they first cropped up on Good Morning Tapes in 2020. Somewhere between delicate ambient and a modern kind of deep house, their music carries a tenderness which feels absolutely at home on Facta and K-Lone's eminently soothing stable, Wisdom Teeth. In Parallel builds on the sound laid out on previous records for Human Pitch and Metron by presenting a more focused duo seemingly conscious of their rapidly grown audience and considering how to best build upon their tender sound without losing the charm. Threading subtle pop elements into their gossamer-light constructions, this is a rich, satisfying listen from a duo it's so easy to love.

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1984 classic, Ongaku Zuka, finally gets a long overdue re-release. Heralded at the time as yet another example of Japan's sorely-missed musical genius in full flow, the tracks feature contributions from Yellow Magic Orchestra's Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, alongside Yasuaki Shimizu, Tatsuro Yamashita and Toshinori Kondo. Originally released in two versions, one with a bonus 7" two-track EP and another with a limited edition 12" three-tracker, both are now being reissued for the modern age. Part of an ongoing celebration of Sakamoto's life following his death in March 2023, when Ongaku Zukan (Musical Encyclopedia) hit it marked the celebrated musician and composer's first top five hit in his homeland, building on the success of both his soundtrack to Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and the Yellow Magic Orchestra, on which time had only recently been called. Syth pop perfection, with unique, mesmerising instrumental compositions, it's an essential for any fan.

Review: The late acclaimed musician, composer, and soundtrack artist Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away in 2006, and he's still enjoying a lengthy career retrospective, part of which manifests as this reissue of his fourth solo album: Ongaku Zakan. An early experiment for Sakamoto, the 1984 LP hears Sakamoto experimenting with various styles of electronic-music-in-jazz, elbowing his way forward to vanguards that would make a pole-positioned phalanx guard blush. We're sure many of these tracks would make even today's most eminent experimental artists envious: 'Paradise Lost', for example, is a beautifully convincing slice of underwater Atalentean electro-lounge, and 'May In The Backyard' is a god-knows-what surrealist number for tempoless marimba and expressionism. Then comes the sudden ambient pop curveball 'Hane No Hayashi De', which makes incredible use of a bitcrusher and choral effects and marks a tonal shift thereafter.

Review: Huerco S' West Mineral welcomes back Flaty & OL's Serwed for what is their fourth full eighth album. It is one that finds them move away somewhat from the more typical bass abstractions you might expect from them and into a world of shiny experimental sounds that harken back to cult video game soundtracks like Resident Evil. FM pads, workstation bells from the 90s and sci-fi drums and textures all make this one a beguiling listen full of hyper real emotions and eerie rhythms. IA great new direction that makes for superb and immersive listening.

Review: Joey Kendrick is perhaps better known for the braindance gear he's put out under his own name for Rephlex and the like, but he's also played around with plenty of aliases over the years too. His work as +10 actually predates his breakthrough years on Rephlex, having been released on the classy Canadian label Napalm Enema. Grace came out in 2007 and it sounds a little rowdier than later Kendrick works, but that's also part of its charm. Hence stalwart Belgian braindance believers WeMe have opted to reissue the CDr-only album as a double vinyl for your twitch, glitchy, acidic pleasure. It's a feast for the cerebellum, no doubt about it.

Review: Without a doubt, one of the most anticipated reissue compilations of the year is this collection of Future Sound of London side projects. In 2007 this was a CD-only compilation of early 90s tracks as well as unreleased ones from the same age. As the lore of FSOL continues to grow over the past 30+ years, their side projects have gotten more and more attention from the people who love those early rave sounds. Now for the first time, a vinyl version of it with no less than a 3x12 to harness all this early 90s techno goodness. All the tracks are by Dougans and Cobain and the aliases are the same. This 2007 album however has a wealth of new material from the same time period as Earthbeat. It is amazing that one release like this by two producers can be such a prime example of the UK sound that changed dance music forever. If you want the 90s UK rave reissue of the year, here it is!
