It is a hugely improvised record that makes use of the AKS synth and was the start of the agitation around the Rock in Opposition and saw Musique Pour Garcons rise to the higher ends of the NEW independent charts. Electronics augmented by lap-steel guitar, tuning pop and more all feature.

Review: Jan Jelinek is never one to present music without an idea behind it. On SEASCAPE - polyptych, he collaborated with Canadian visual artist Clive Holden to create an audio-visual software which, on the surface, feels like the disorientation of being immersed in or moved about by a sizeable body of water. It's subtle and shimmering, threaded with the cosy hum and micro sonic style which Jelinek has made his own, but it of course develops a new resonance when you learn all the sound has been triggered by converting ranting speeches from Captain Ahab in John Huston's 1956 adaptation of Moby Dick. Just very occasionally actual speech noises sneak through, but primarily this is a fragmented, subliminal experience which will satisfy the expectations of Jelinek's fanbase - and indeed anyone who appreciates elegant, minimalist experimentation.

Review: Guillaume Lespinasse should be a familiar name to fans of the Brothers From Different Mothers label and the alternative French electronic/dance music scene that has been in rude health for ages now. As one half of celebrated live duo The Pilotwings, regulars on said label, we can safely consider him a master of the immersive slo mo sound, veering towards a more cosmic, almost tropical end as oppose to the heavier, progressive tones many opt for at that tempo.
Here he's stepping out alone to offer this richly detailed collection of ambience and obscurity, packed with the kind of noises that really make you want to stay in a moment forever. In many ways, the arrangements opt for a maximalist approach to serenity. And tracks don't stand still - they evolve, and develop, switch and change things up, at times sounding like opiate drone, in other moments 1980s movie accidentals.

Review: It's always pretty refreshing to come across a collective that don't really want people to know they exist. Or at least they prefer to stay on the shadowy side of anonymity, contrasting the Insta-reliant (or should that be TikTok these days?) music age. A time when bands, producers and acts are often forced against their will to be present and visible and searchable, simply to have a chance of surviving. Let alone success.

What we can say is these guys have been exploring field recordings, 'outernational rhythms' (their words, not ours), and the sounds that exist on the edges of dance music for some time. Informed by the elements - much of what's here invokes, or is the direct result of, interactions with air, wood, and metal - the result is essentially your own personal gong bath. Review: It wasn't so long ago we were writing about the joys of BVDUB's Fumika Fades, a new double pack in February that sunk us deep into moving ambient soundscapes. Now the Bay Area dub techno titan Brock van Wey is back once again with yet another album - he dropped plenty of them last year too so is clearly in a mad creative patch. Slowly Shifting Lakes comes in multiple formats, this one being a double CD. The ambient here is coarse and textured, fizzing synths stretching out over skittish rhythmic frameworks before sinking into calmer waters on cuts like the escapist 'Searching For Glowing Shores.' Another triumphant album for sure.

Review: Brock Van Wey hails from the Bay Area but his BVDUB project is known worldwide. It sees the American provide a near-constant stream of innovative ambient music on the Past Inside The Present label - this new double album comes just a couple of months after his last one, Fumika Fades, but is essential once more. There are plenty of intense and heavily textured tracks as well as more empty and escapist pieces with heavenly melodies and subtle vocals worked into to dreamy effect. As always he serves up the album in various formats and this is the double cassette version which lends itself to the lo-fi aesthetic perfectly.

Review: Is it rock? Is it metal? Is it synth pop? How about art noise? Someone, somewhere, is trying to pen a thesis on how you define the mighty and mysterious Yves Tumor. Best leave it to them, then. Wonder aside, the Knoxville, Tennessee outsider has finally delivered the follow up to Heaven To A Tortured Mind and it's every bit another masterpiece that grabs listeners by the jugular and challenges them, while delivering exactly what they didn't realise they wanted to hear.
While it's difficult to find much genuinely surprising in music today, the sheer breadth of Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume (Or Simply Hot Between Worlds) is in itself a shock. Over the course of 12 tracks, we hit grinding electroclash ('God Is A Circle'), seductive operatic pop ('Lovely Sewer'), main stage heavy rock ('Parody'), distorted and pained metal ('Meteora Blues'), and high-paced, rousing indie ('In Spite of War'), among other styles, all realised via a unique musical identity some would kill to possess.

Review: Second time around for David Sylvian's inspired full-length collaboration with German mastering engineer-turned-electro-acoustic experimentalist Stephan Mathieu. Wandermude won plenty of plaudits on its initial 2012 release, with critics highlighting the immersive beauty and sonic detail of the duo's hybrid drone and ambient works. It still sounds superb all these years on, too - all evocative aural textures (often provided by Sylvian on guitar or synth, though Mathieu did contribute some organ sounds), impeccable sound design (Mathieu is a master at this and reportedly constructed most of the showcased tracks) and sustained sound-washes. If you love ambient music, you need it in your life.

Review: A titanic one-off clash LP between Japan's head brain David Sylvian and electroacoustic extraordinaire Stephan Mathieu, Wandermude is a slow and sublime classic for real ambient heads. Reissued for the first time since its release in 2012, the album charts a wealth of mutual interest between both artists; the pair both collaborated first as part of a dual live performance at Noway's Punkt festival, during which Mathieu performed a live remix of Sylvian's song 'Plight And Premonition'. This LP is the result of the same creative thread - whooshing, mysterious and full of raw instrumental material translated into audacious oddities.

Cardoso, Mladen Kurajica and Daniel Garcia leave behind the mega-mix vignette of their first album for a more song-based but still avant-gard collection here. Their raw, live jamming style mixes up tropicalia and electronic freakouts with found sounds, percussion, bird calls and rich samples that all bring these tracks to life as it moves through various different moods, gores, genres and eras with style. Somehow inviting yet eerie, this a very personal sound world but we're all welcome inside.

Review: Valentina Magaletti has proven herself to be a drummer and percussionist with rare talent over the last two odd years. She pursues a nice kind of estate ritualism when she records and here the multi-faceted improviser is her in solo mode. It was recorded in one single continuous take in the empty Cafe Oto in London, during late October of 2020. She manages to interlace and weave together a stunning tapestry of polyrhythms and electronic interventions that make for a deeply involving, cathartic record across two whole-side pieces. There is always a sense of risk here, that the music might collapse at any more, and that is what keeps you so on edge throughout.
