Ecstasy EP

Minimal/Tech House
Ecstasy (8:40)
Deep In My Soul (7:59)
Edge Of Infinity (6:21)
Air Gap (7:28)
Review: Fresh from releasing the third and final part of the Oldivibes trilogy of EPs, Mulen Records co-founder Io (real name Aleksandr Voznichenko) offers up some aural 'Ecstasy' to get tech-house dancefloors moving. The EP-opening title track is a retro-futurist delight, with the Ukranian producer peppering a tactile, turn-of-the-90s warehouse groove with raw hip-house stabs, whispered vocal snippets and spacey synth sounds. The old school flavour continues on 'Deep In My Soul', where a 'Bombscare'-inspired lead line combines brilliantly with an organ bassline, smooth beats and swirling electronics, before Voznichenko reaches for psychedelic TB-303 style motifs, rolling drums, funky stabs and glassy-eyed riffs on 'Edge of Infinity'. Finally, 'Air Gap' is an attractive mix of bold, ear-catching bass, heady organ riffs, mind-mangling electronic motifs and loose-limbed peak-time drums.

Fun-K (5:58)
Cheeloom (8:10)
Molecoles (7:17)
Nite Life (6:32)
Review: This acid tech-trance gem was first released in 1996, and first made an appearance on the suitably Star Trek-themed Spock Records, an Italian label that saw to much trance of the utmost quality get released during its Italo heyday. The victim of horrible scalping, it's well overdue for a rerelease. 'Fun-K' is the highlight, showing off producer Bhasmantam's (Gieuseppe Pol's) sensitive and detail-oriented trance production chops, straddling euphoria and technicality in a manner that does not alienate or confuse. The remaining tunes are more breathable and minimal affairs, but all build a world that captivate as they do enthrall.

How U Do It (5:42)
Review: Too Smooth Christ is a new solo project from a rising French artist who is half of the electro duo Glass Figure and also co-runs the SuperGenius label. He lands on Partout here in superb form with deep and cinematic sounds. 'Violence Triggers Violence' is a cathartic house excursion into deep space with smooth drums and dreamy pads, while 'Arp Ody 626' layers up dusty drums and loopy synth sequences that get you gazing off into the distance. 'Monodimensional' has a heavenly feel with its lush and celestial chords lighting up the skies above a slick mix of drums and hits and 'How U Do It' is another artful cosmic closer. A classy EP for sure.

Deadbeat - "The Serpent & The Jaguar" (4:26)
Triptease & Yonatan Levi - "Amniotic Jive" (11:33)
Tuccillo - "Outer Space" (7:27)
Wareika - "When Will We Meet Again?" (8:15)
Review: Ten years deep, Visionquest continues to be a potent force in field of minimal tech house thanks to releases like these. The latest split release from their VQ X series opens up with the spellbinding, micro dub meditation 'The Serpent & The Jaguar' from Deadbeat before swerving into the equally tender folds of Triptease & Yonatan Levi's 'Amniotic Jive'. Tuccillo opens up the B-side with some crisp, immersive broken beat rhythmic incantations, and then Wareika round the record off with a smouldering piece of hi-tech jazz from the outer rim. This is subtle, elegant minimal at its warmest, make no mistake.

Mohugan (8:23)
Br2 (6:40)
Truthers (7:08)
Morning Du (6:48)
Review: Minibar's endless quest for the freshest kinds of minimal continues with this collaboration from emergent partnership Max Jacobson & Snad. You would have previously spotted the pair on Lowris' AEternum Music in 2021, and they're continuing to come up with the goods on this crisp and classy four-tracker. 'Mohugan' thrives on the knotty, tracky grooves you expect at least somewhere on a Minibar release, while 'Br2' cools things out with some elegant pad tones atop those snappy beat patterns. 'Truthers' takes things even deeper down with its whispers of melody, while 'Morning Du' gets back to business good and proper with a freaky after hours workout that will never let you down.

Submoon - "Remote Viewers" (6:59)
Review: The Vuo label's Elemental Mood Series hits a fifth volume now and still the goods keep on coming with no dips in quality. Modernism opens up with 'Computational One', a deep rolling minimal house cut with dub warmth and deft designs. Sibling brings a little more texture to 'Soundscapes' with its frosty chord work and TM Shuffle's 'Skyline' then explores the bottom of the ocean with its nice icy hi hats and liquid rhythms. Submoon closes down with 'Remote Viewers', a far sighted and cosmic-tinged dub tech roller.

Review: Enter a brand new whirling, cosmic four-tracker from Italian label Threads, and this time MPEG is the brains behind the imprint's seventh release. Opening with the high-energy groover, 'Bite The Bullet', a feel-good melody destined for outdoor play rolls into sharp-focused percussion and a masterful, atmospheric breakdown. Another stand out track, 'Whereabout', follows a light-footed acid line as it soars through the white-cloud blue-sky atmospheres that gradually seep into the track as it progresses. A beautiful release - perfect for daytime dancing and late night dreaming alike.

Ask It Acid (6:16)
Review: Legendary Detroiter Marcellus Pittman is in a surprisingly forthright mood on 'Facid Trunktion', the title track of his latest three-track excursion. While the deep and woozy touches we've come to expect are present - albeit in smaller doses than usual - what catches the ear is the fluctuating TB-303 bassline, the restlessly jazzy but driving drums, and the overall sweat-soaked feel of the whole thing. You'll find even more acid wizardry on B-side opener 'Sanskrit Body Rock', a hypnotising machine jam, while 'Ask It Acid' is a pleasingly stripped-back and mind-mangling jack-track.

Liminal Space (6:08)
Review: Sketching out the physical space between one destination and the next, Eric OS's latest project, housed on his own label Space Trace, travels to the unknown outer edges of the universe. Kicking things off 'Mind Wide Open' follows the intergalactic course of a full-bodied, bassline-driven melody as it interweaves with celestial synths and pulsating percussion. 'Omen', the A2 track, has an instantly brighter feel - a habitable, plant-filled planet has been found amidst the depths of space, perhaps. On the flip side 'Shiitake' is an instant classic - a darkened melody intersects with punchy drums and cool-toned atmospheres. And finally, rounding things off we have the incredible electro track 'Liminal Space' - warm and enveloping, this is a perfect way to round off a night of deep interstellar travel.

The Way (feat Tane) (5:26)
Review: Brooklyn-based Malik Hendricks does a fine line in raw, deep but visceral house sounds that cannot fail to make an impact both physically and emotionally. He has done so on the likes of Bliss Point, Coloring Lessons and Darker Than Wax before now and here arrives on People Of Earth with more compelling cuts. 'Move On Up' is a steamy and sweaty house thumper with impassioned vocal swirls, 'All Mine' layers in some heavenly melodies that manage to uplift the mood in a subtle fashion and 'Feeling Like Larry' references the great Mr Heard, surely, with its balmy cosmic pads and spiritual house depths. 'The Way' (feat Tane) is licked with acoustic guitar riffs that bring to mind open-air dancing by the Med.

Together Alone (Kolsch 'I Have You' remix) (7:05)
Review: 'Together Alone' is the latest flagship emoter from Pale Blue, a recent Crosstown Rebels signee and musical duo comprising Elizabeth Wight and Mike Simonetti. Wight's vocals on this neat slice of gut-wrenching wax glide across the mix in an honest fashion, recalling the muted serenity of trip-hop legends like Martina Topley-Bird or Tracey Thorn, but set to a minimal techno backing. Kolsch backs up the B with the 'I Have You' remix, which eschews the vocals for glitzing builds and a groovier bassline.

Review: US producer and DJ Sepehr returns with 'Diaspora Cocktail' for Planet Euphorique, breaking from his own imprint Shaytoon for a hair-down foray through cheekier-side of scene-setting techno. The five bits on this new 12" hark back to the titling traditions of the early 90s, with alternate mixes with denominations like 'XTC Mix' and 'Freak Beat Mix' stealing the show. Sonically, the tracks allude to everything from New York electro to movie soundtrack tropes, nicely bridging the gap between ritualistic drama music and sumptuous atmospheric dance.

Review: Suzi from Belgium sure does like to get freaky on the floor. Here the young label continues to assert itself in the minimal world with an energising four-track various artists selection. Dashiell's 'Beep Beep' kick off with just that - lots of bleeps, squats and blurts of synth over a scintillating tech house groove. Beta Librae's 'Listening To The Ants' is a more nuanced cut with stripped-back rhythms and scattered percussion as well as smart effects adding interest. Florist brings a 90s techno feel and Alfredo 92's eight-minute epic 'Bora' is all gurgling sound effects and freaky late-night menace.

Review: While there's no over-arching concept behind the series, it's always safe to assume that any new Selects compilation from Global Underground will be packed to the rafters with brand-new house and techno that tends towards the melodic, atmospheric, glassy-eyed and tactile. Volume eight certainly ticks those boxes, with 12 highlights from the (more expansive) mixed version stretched across two slabs of purple vinyl. Our picks of a predictably strong bunch include a delightful deep tech-house tweak of Fulltone & Parallel's 'How Can I Resist' by Patrice Baumel, the Space Invaders-goes-trance throb of 1979's 'Vulcano', the bleeping brilliance of Captain Mustache's retro-futurist rework of O.N.O's 'Gran Music' and the ambient soul beauty of Yotto's 'Silhouette'.

Review: Stop the press and cancel your calls, the mighty Cobblestone Jazz have returned. Has it really been eight years since we were last graced by the elevated musicality and marvel of Mathew Jonson's ensemble group with Danuel Tate and Tyger Dhula? Time flies and it feels like we're in comfortable territory even as the Jazz take us to some wonderful new places on this collaborative EP with fellow Wagon Repair alumni The Mole. The keys sound ever more expressive and exquisite, while Jonson's unmistakable touch on the programming is as inspired as ever. This band-spirited approach to deep house never fails to deliver sparkling results and Cobblestone Jazz sound like the soul-enriching tonic we all need in our lives. Welcome back.

The long-time underground stalwart releases a ton of music on a ton of labels - but here on his own Phoenix G he serves up a healthy dose of unreleased dubplates. Another essential 12" in a career full of them.

The EP, released via Istanbul-based label Oath, was a result of his new creative space in Los Angeles after moving from London. The high-energy tech house of 'Floor Science' kicks off the EP, while the slinky and hypnotic title track takes listeners on a blissful journey with euphoric vocals. Over on the second side, the euphoric 'Re-location.zip' radiates new beginnings with its elevating chords and snappy breakbeats, fuelled by Wildblood's new studio gear.

It was a CD-only release back then but now gets a proper pressing across three slabs of wax It is much more percussive, raw and textural than anything you would associate the smooth minimalist Melchior these days but it perfectly fits in with the current trend for mixing up several sound worlds at once. There are breaks, cosmic electro, mad techno and even hints of house along the course of the eight expertly designed tracks.

The full-length LP Lagarius shows off Martin's knack for blending funk, soul and Afro-Latin influences, with a faster-tempo'ed techno sound. It's heavy on the detail, with arguably only trained ears being able to pick up on all its backing samples and intricacies (that's us, of course). So take it from us; from the sultry swang of title track, to the dystopian grit of 'Situational Awareness', you won't want to miss this one.

Review: Weighty, unpretentious, cheeky new experimental techno from Japanese artist Riku Sugimoto, debuting his first EP with their local pushers Exarde. As the label have said themselves, their "family tree is getting bigger and bigger, and (it) looks like soon we will have a fully packed roster from all corners of the world." We're chuffed to see a label grow in real time, and we're sure they're stoked to have Sugimoto join their ranks. This is an effortless EP, one that blends acid, breakbeat, and electro-techno tropes with resampled vocals and generative, future-facing topoi. By far the highlight is the 2-stepping 'Escape Mutation': perfect electro for a house party on a reclaimed starship's main control room.

On its first release titled 'Techno Mafia', he explores 'mega hypnotic minimalism' as heard on the A-side title track, which makes for the perfect afterhours jam which to get those heads down on the dancefloor. Turn over to the other side and you've got the lean and subtle early morning dub of 'Sleep Banger', featuring some truly eerie chords underpinned by clipped yet unrelenting rhythms, which will keep the party going well into Monday morning.

Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Trantrax (7:16)
Conxandinote (7:14)
Review: It's been a minute since we last heard from Dyed Soundorom but now the Parisian minimal tech house mainstay is back with a new two-tracker. It's a swift reminder of why he's spent so long at the top of the game both solo and in Apollonia, full of the subtle charm and mystique found in the best of the genre. 'Trantrax' slips into a seriously reduced hypnosis, threading minuscule flecks of melody into a mix defined by the creepy three note bassline. On the flip, 'Conxandinote' keeps things reliably creepy with hints of icy pad and another b-line that roundly defines the overall atmosphere of the track in chilling, captivating style.

Overcome (9:00)
Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:22)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

Remember (6:44)
Review: Constant Sound co-owner James 'Burnski' Burnham delivers a stonking pair of garage-flecked house tracks that offer up no nonsense dancefloor attitude in spades. 'Shout' is all about its monster rhythmic framework, with economic splashes of synths on the side simply maintaining the flavour and a properly full on old skool breakdown. Flip track 'Remember' leans a little further towards UK garage with its sugar sweet female vocal snippets, but the central groove hustles and bustles along with maximum weightiness, making it suitable for any number of differing dancefloors.

Review: It's time to take your first steps into the Kulture Galerie, a new label that kicks off with a various artists offering which lays out is sonic mission in clear and compelling terms. This new venture from Metropolitan Soul Museum kicks off with the super fluid and liquid house sounds of Abdul Raeva's 'Grace' before Gene Tellem's 'Nervous Planet' gets all misty eyed and downtempo with a lush deep thinker. Nesa Azadikhah's 'Fleeting Emotions' then sets off a nice minimal vibe that is super warm and fuzzy and Alien D's 'Heavy Cream' is a float, breakbeat driven post-rave comedown.

Kutika (Remotif remix) (7:46)
Review: Psychedelic dance technicians explore the recesses of weird emotion with their latest release with Latrec. The original 'Kutika' is like a pocket calculator gone rogue, blending an electrified MPC-style jam on the beat with dubbed-out vocal samples and an oddly resonant bass synth. Paranoid London member Quinn Whalley crops up on the B-side, together with Matt Cowell under the name The WC, for a remix - the toilet humour is apt, since this version of the track does sort of sound like it's sloshing around in a washbasin, with its verbed-out delays on the bass. Remotif, meanwhile, throws a driving trance curveball on the B2.

I (9:06)

Review: Dubtil finally launches his own label here and it's called Infrequent, which we hope won't be a case of nominative determinism. It's something minimal and tech house fans have long been wanting and this first drop doesn't disappoint. One of Romania's most accomplished DJs and producers lays out a fine vision here with the spaced out tech funk of 'I' kicking off with its dreamy pads and clipped beats. 'II' is even more out of this world with its wiry synths and aline life forms over heftier drums, then 'III' closes out with brilliant drum programming, pinging bass and the sort of smeared pads that bring real death.

Wires Around My Neck (5:27)
Review: House-master, Matthias, is the latest producer to debut on the iconic Scottish Minimal/Tech house imprint, Craigie Knowes. Delivering a class EP injected with originality and outright funk, this will be a no-brainer purchase for a long list of DJs and home listeners. On the A side, 'Tube Star' arrives with a throbbing bassline, honey-sweet synths and glinting percussion. For the A2, growling electric guitar melodies meet darkened synthlines and bludgeoning kicks to produce a powerful dancefloor-ready track. On the B-side, we have Ultra Bass on remix duties, offering a bass-stroke-acid-stroke-garage take on Matthais' signature sound - this is undoubtedly a peak time track for those out-of-control moments. Closing things up, 'Wires Around My Neck' slows to a patient pace - a duet of circling synth melodies and chugging drums give this track a delectably wonky, spaced-out vibe. A wonderfully varied release that is surely set to be a favourite for this year's circuit of festivals.

Review: Israeli music-maker, DJ and editor Lior Miller has been producing and remixing music for over 20 years, time which has evidently been poured into refining the clean, melodic, cathartic sound we hear here. This fresh new EP hears two remixes by Lior of tracks by friends Phototaxis and Kutiman, an electro-soul band from Tel Aviv and psychedelic funk/Afrobeat producer respectively. Lior's signature twists and grooves lend psychedelic depth and melodic, plucky, back-of-the-club flair to the originals - don't miss it.
