Wrong Chocolate (8:18)
Review: This new one by Ferro cycles through three rough and buzzing acid techno cuts, beginning with the jagged-fanged track 'Shoulder'; middling on the attention-grabbing and muddy 'Ay'; and ending on the gyratory palette-cleanser 'Wrong Chocolate'. Most evident is Ferro's ability to mire their music in garbly rhythms and off-kilter slop. The middle tune especially sounds like a mud-covered fish flopping around on an MPC's button bank. It's an impressive EP, sure to bring any given rave back down to Earth with its overall dirty realist sound.

Review: Glaswegian producer Pigeon Steve, a mysterious producer who claims to be from the future, lays down four fresh originals on his latest EP 'FS 1'. Ostensibly a breakbeat EP, but with a retro edge packed with obscure, probably public-domain vocal samples from film and just-intoned cadences, every influence from medley-style breaks to downtempo psych-acid crops up on this deep rabbit-hole-jumper.

Review: Nadia Struiwigh's Pax Aurora was a standout ambient techno LP in 2022, and now Nous Klaer Audio have returned to the project to commission a grip of remixes which respond to the source material in distinctive ways. DJ Nobu takes a delicate, mesmerising approach to 'Nana', while Jakojako plumbs the depths of immersive, feathery techno. With Om Unit and Julia Gjertsen representing with equally hypnotic, elegant versions on the flip as well, this is the perfect example of a remix EP which truly adds weight to the original release.

Review: Having previously celebrated dance and pop hits of the 1980s, the long-running Now That's What I Call Music series - itself established that decade - has turned its attention to "alternative". It's a catch-all term that basically includes anything with indie roots, meaning a mix of goth, post-punk, indie, new wave, indie-dance and skewed synth-pop that emerged from the underground rather than the A&R departments of major labels. There's plenty of big hits and iconic cuts stretched across the four discs (think The Smiths, Simple Minds, Joy Division, REM, The Jam, New Order, Pixies, Sisters of Mercy etc), alongside lesser-celebrated favourites from the likes of Pop Will Eat Itself, Tom Robinson (the decidedly Balearic 'Atmospherics', which was co-written by Peter Gabriel), Sugacubes, Kissing The Pink and Big Audio Dynamite.

Review: Having delivered a string of loosely themed collections of extended mixes and 12" versions from the 1980s, the long-running NOW compilation strand has launched a new series focusing on music released in specific years across the decade. 1980, the inaugural collection, is relatively light on pop, 'alternative' and new wave extended mixes (though OMD, Spandau Ballet, Sparks and UB40 all appear), but big on soaring disco hits, crossover club classics and chart-bothering dance numbers from the dawn of the decade of Thatcher and Reagan. That means outings for the likes of Tom Browne's 'Funkin' For Jamaica', Teena Marie's exceptional 'Behind The Groove', Grace Jones' low-slung cover of Roxy Music's 'Love is the Drug', Tom Moulton's peerless version of Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Sensation', an Odyssey's addictive 'Use It Up & Wear It Out'.

Review: The JalapeNo label sure does like it hot and this one is no different. It sees the return of label regulars Skeewiff for a new series of outings that take the form of reworked covers of some of their favourite library tracks, inspired by greats of the genre such as Keith Mansfield, Brian Bennett, and Alan Hawkshaw. First up is 'Exclusive Blend,' a rather classic instrumental composition by Mansfield. 'Spanish Flea' is on the flip and is a version of a very famous work by Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass Band. It's a funky take with lots of percussive energy and big strings.

Review: This hard-hitting EP of tough-as-you-like roots was dropped to great acclaim in 1981. The deep and heavy dubs were mixed by the one and only Scientist at the legendary King Tubby's studio with great mic work from Michael Prophet, Patrick Andy and Alric Forbes. The original has been fully remastered for this reissue which comes on both CD and vinyl formats. It is music drenched in island vibes with dark soul and plenty of great horns. The mixing is of course next level, as always with Scientist, so you can be sure of a real trip when listening to this one front to back.

Review: Standers is the second album by anonymous musician Craven Faults, amounting to a pilgrimage through sound to the ancient stone monuments that dot the region of northern England - known as standing stones or standers. Using vintage synthesizers and tape machines, the producer plunges the depths of English folk mysticism, coinciding with the nascent pagan revival that has cropped up in recent times. Sonically, meanwhile, each track moves through cinematic pulses, arpeggiating and filter-sweeping through nods to different eras and years; 1213, 1908, 1966.

Review: P1LL is a mysterious producer whose production tools allegedly range from drum machines to keys and guitars - perhaps the artist is a low-key virtuoso. He's also allegedly a longtime head, having produced some tracks in the 90s in the city of Santa Monica, but unfortunately most of them were never released. But we love a good slow-bubbler here at Juno: 'The Other Side' is his first ever EP, featuring four tracks made between 1996 and 1998. Influences from techno, house, electro and breakbeat collide into a serene swirl on this new one for Serenity Now: 'Touch My Soul' is beautiful, heavy on surroundy chord stabs and lolling pads, while similarly entrancing yet darker tribal trance moods are heard on B-siders like 'Deep Inside My Mind'.

Review: Lacksley Castell's 'What A Great Day' is something of a roots reggae classic that has been long hard to find after first dropping back in 1979. It still spuds fresh and will pack a punch on any sound system. Prince Jammy is a master of mixing this sort of stuff who later went on to be a big player in the dancehall game having eventually ditched his analogue tools in favour of digital ones. His dub 'Throne of Blood' is on there flip to round out another brilliant 45rpm from VP, who are masters of just that.

Review: Eddie Logix makes his return to Rocksteady Disco fold with this fresh new 12", 'Flight Risk'. It's a varied affair that pulls from a wide range of genres including leftfield, deep house, disco, Afrobeat, and even Balearic. Some of these tunes have already been picking up high-profile support from the likes of Leo Mas, Chris Coco and Danny Krivit - no wonder given that his last on the label sold out immediately. 'Sky Dive' is a nice loose limbed funky deep disco jam, 'Home Suite' has a superb new age flute lead and 'Missing Pixels' is a tribal Afro dancer. 'Mount Juniper' is the lively and tropical house number that has you dreaming of cocktails by the sea.

Review: Legendary Belgian record label WeMe has long been a pioneering force in the drum & bass underworld. It is Lord of the D who makes a devastating return here with all consuming sounds towering over you and do as they please with your brain and body. 'Dunstable' is all fizzing synths and hammering drum breaks then 'O Ixed Mpo' absolutely cuts loose with sonics in meltdown, reversed stabs and drum carnage that never resolves. Review: A new one from American ambient artist City Of Dawn (real name Damian Duque), 'Transient Lounge' is a short EP-length collection of soothing pieces aiming at a simple intention: a peaceful and healing atmosphere for the listener. The theme is apt, since the album's inspiration-striking allegedly came at a time when the artist and his family needed to get away and find space to adapt. The LP's natural blend of guitar, piano, space delays, synthetic pads, and field recordings - a rightfully well-trodden combo - forms an echoic journey into the heart of the human condition, perhaps recalling inspirations like Bvdub or Celer.

C.K. himself leads on the A-side with 'Lock', a solid house-geared workout with plenty of immersive melodic threads tipping the vibe towards the proggy end of things. Review: Here comes Emotional Rescue and Konduko's last in their series of Noel Williams/King Sporty reissues, this time looking at later electro productions and the hip-hop/boogie influenced 'Sun Country'. Vocals and co-production come from Williams' long-time partner Betty Wright and as well as a vocal and instrumental mix there's a longform remix by Bay Area disco dub stalwarts, 40 Thieves.
By this point in his career, the godfather of Miami Bass had travelled a long way from his Jamaican roots in reggae and soul, paying homage to the warm climbs of the Sunshine State and laying down a much copied template using the TR-808 drum machine create the electronic emulations of the breakbeat, claps accenting the backbeat and trademark low frequencies shaking the floorboards. The instrumental stretches the arrangement, emphasising the interplay between electronics, bass, vocal samples, scratching and fx, the voice transformed into a percussive element in its own right. The flip sees 40 Thieves flexing their understated understanding of electro funk, making for a rounded, generation-jumping package.

Review: Flute player Diggory Kenrick trills the pipes once more on this collab with revered dub producers Jah Warrior and Vibronics. 'Social Justice' may sound like a loud name for a new 7", but this is actually a rather muted instrumental cut, with Kenrick's flute standing in for the righteous wail of the politically mobilized folk. The B, too, provides ample space in which to skank and/or hug a bassbin, all while still allowing at least some room for Kenrick's patented flute to peek through the delay and phase.

As always his love for the foundations shines through as we're taken on a whirlwind tour through jungle, hardcore and rave. 'Set Me Free' nods towards that 92/93 era of atmospheric hardcore and jungle which the likes of Jack Smooth was behind. It's an ice-cold dub with a fathom-deep low end and hypnotic if muted lead melody that snakes its way between the heavy drums. It's a cavernous atmosphere that sounds as fresh now as ever. It has never been backed with this unheard B-side dub before, either, so is an extra special one to add to the racks as that dub goes extra melon-twisting with more punch in the kicks and hissing hi-hats leaving long tails.

Emilia seems to feel right at home with the material that she cooks up with Cold Diamond & Mink, filling both songs to the brim with soul. Despite its title, 'Trouble' strolls along with a delicately sweet mid-tempo groove and a nicely abundant arrangement, each of Emilia's lyrical calls getting a response from the background harmonizers and the band steady tightening up while the song builds towards its conclusion. The B-side slows things down to a lush southern soul drawl, coming off like a classy forgotten Hi session.

Desktop version of the Hold It patch cable holder.
Notes: Have you experienced the long, frustrating nights of smoke-filled rooms, patch cables strewn about like spaghetti, unable to find the right cable when the muse is singing softly in your ear?

Take back control and Hold It! Hold It puts your patch cables IN your Eurorack case, not beside it!

It comes in two versions: Eurorack-mounted and desktop.

The Eurorack patch cable holder mounts directly into your Eurorack system like a module. The rear panel allows the tip of the cable to protrude through, without the cable falling inside your case. The standoffs we include allow you to choose a plug housing depth of 25mm or 35mm, which will fit most 3.5mm cables. Our Synthrotek patch cables fit perfectly in the 25mm standoffs.

The Desktop version includes wood screws so that you can mount it to your desk, Eurorack case, etc.

Desktop Version Features:
Made for 3.5mm cables
Seven slots, each 5mm wide
Two wood screws included

Please note: Patch cables not included. Assembly required. It is not recommended to put Hold It next to a module with a circuit board perpendicular to the panel.

Review: Of course everyone knows Chicane for the epochal chart trance hits 'Offshore', 'Don't Give Up' and 'Saltwater', but the prolific producer has a catalogue which travels well past those hits of yesteryear. Given his last studio album topped dance charts globally, it's a fine time to catch up on some of the incredible music he's crafted in the more recent phase of his career. Spread across two CDs, extended mixes of instrumental club tracks like 'Hiding All The Stars' and 'Going Deep' sit alongside the vocal talents of Christian Burns on 'One Thousand Suns' and Senadee on 'No More I Sleep'.

Upsetters - "What A Botheration" (3:01)
The Inspirations - "Stand By Me" (1:47)
Review: Some undeniably classic reggae here on this reissue from Duke. It is a red hot double sider that was originally recorded in 1968 by the one and only dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry and taken from a solo 7" box set that was assembled a few years ago by the name of People Funny Boy. The A-side What A Botheration' is a rhythm from his legendary band The Upsetters with Perry's typically esoteric vocal style up top. On the flip is The Inspirations with the seriously warm and soul-drenched tune 'Stand By Me' which radiants sun rays and earthy grooves.

Review: Room In The Sky knows a thing or two about rock-solid dub and reggae and because of their work over the years, we do too. Often they serve up some classics with new versions from The Inn House Crew adding a fresh dub perspective. But this time it is The Inn House Crew who go it alone with a couple of their own hot-stepping tunes. 'Moonflute' kick off with mystic flute leads and stepping sequences that get you up on your toes as the bright and fresh reggae drums and percussion bristle next to sci-fi effects. 'Mozarmedi' is a slower, more traditional dub but with some gorgeous pianos.

Believe In Magic: Heavenly Recordings: The First 30 Years by Robin Turner
Cat: 976774 Rel: 13 Oct 23 • View all Music books

A chronicle not only of Foxbase Alpha, Working Men's Club and 28 of the releases in between that got Heavenly Recordings to where it is today
Notes: Heavenly was already a state of mind. Seemed like the right time to make it something really special. We were all deeply immersed in music that we loved. None of us could believe our fucking luck, really. - Jeff Barrett

It was thirty years ago today - or thereabouts - that Heavenly came to be. In celebration of this big ol' birthday comes Believe in Magic - a chronicle not only of Foxbase Alpha, Working Men's Club and 28 of the releases in between that got the label to where it is today, but also of the haircuts, nights down the pub, pencil-eraser-carvings, cheese toasties, acid houses, Sunday Socials and lost Weekenders - Yorkshire and otherwise - that are as much a part of its story.

As Jeff Barrett puts it at the end of the book, if there's a continuous theme that runs through all of this, I think it's that everything comes down to conversations with people about music. It might seem like it all starts with someone on one side of the counter who is selling you something, or someone writing excitedly in a magazine telling you about a band you need to hear, but I don't think I've ever really seen things as one-way transactions. It's more an ongoing dialogue, one that never really stops and helps to build up this growing soundtrack to our lives, something that's passed from one person to another. That's really the ever-present thread. That's why we still believe in magic.

Though we are three decades distant from The World According to Sly and Lovechild, lineup changes, ups, downs, and a good few office cleanups under the label's belt, the Heavenly firm continue not to believe their fucking luck; at still being here, keepin' on keepin' on doing what they love, and at being able to pass all of this - then, now, and next week - on to you.

'Heavenly has always lived up to its name. Celestial tunes with the sublime sure guidance of Jeff Barrett. A beacon of integrity.'

- Annie Nightingale -

'I feel very grateful and properly proud to have played a small part in this incredible story. MAGIC-FAITH-AESTHETICS. That to me is what Heavenly stands for.'

- Nicky Wire -

'Heavenly is more than a record label, it's the absolute nectar of all that's brilliant in the culture of these island. I love the shit out of them and everything they stand for.'

- Irvine Welsh -

Believe in Magic is a fully illustrated history of one of the most colourful and exciting independent British record labels; a label responsible for creating satellite communities of fans around the country and at all the major festivals.

After several years working at Factory and Creation, Heavenly Recordings was set up by Jeff Barrett in 1990 as the acid house revolution was in full swing; early releases set the tone and tempo for the mood of the decade to come - their first release was by perhaps the most revered acid house DJ of them all, Andrew Weatherall; and this was quickly followed by singles from St Etienne and Manic Street Preachers.

Heavenly was always different to other labels; more of a 'club' with a defiant spirit of inclusiveness, and in 1994 they set up The Heavenly Social, which alongside the Hacienda, became perhaps the most famous club in recent British history, where the Chemical Brothers made their name.

Over nearly 200 releases in thirty years Heavenly have consistently produced some of the most exciting music across all genres - dance, acid house, singer-songwriter, psych-garage - and this book collects rare photographs, ephemera, artwork into a celebration of a label that is, alongside Rough Trade and Factory, one of the most beloved institutions on the independent landscape. Running though the book are thirty stories, mostly told in the form of oral history by artists like James Dean Bradfield, Flowered Up, Beth Orton, Doves and Don Letts, which capture the presiding personality of the label, its bands and the people associated with its success.

Believe in Magic will be published as a L30 standard hardback edition.

Review: Mukatsuku looks to the legendary Japanese downtempo producer Calm here for a new, hand-numbered 7" in the form of his 'Quiet Music Under The Moon' sampler. It features two tunes taken from his masterful new album, the first being 'Oyasumi, Ohayo' where subtle synths ripple beneath Balearic leads. It's heartbroken ambient introspection for late-night star gazing. On the flip, 'Moon Shower' is more hopeful and optimistic, with mellifluous layers of synth shimmer like the sun off the Med. It's beautiful and cathartic with Calm's majestic synth craft front and centre.

Review: Recorded in 2022 for the BBC's Gideon Coe show, 'Christmas In Atlantis' is the Portland, Oregon band's first Christmas track; released just in time to battle it out for a Christmas Number 1. Ahead of their fourth LP, for which they will be touring in 2024, the song comes to us as a heart-rending slow funk number, with the sultry, up-close, and breathy vocals of Amy Boone retelling a complex tale of sorrow, conspiracy, casinos, and a restored faith in the Christmas spirit, in spite of it all. The single features two other exclusive tracks that will also not feature on the next album.

Here he worked with producer Freddie McGregor on a contemporary lovers rock jam that was originally released back in 1993. Backed by house band The Penrose Scholars and co-written by producer Anthony Masino, 'When My Heart Breaks' is a bouncy stepper with feel-good vibes and groove in equal measure, serving up a Brenton Wood-esque blast of sunshine and soul. Cruise Music keeps on cruising here with a sublime sixth offering featuring for more fine house cuts. Mark Funk opens up with an edit of 'I Believe' that has chunky drums and squelchy synths as well as the iconic original vocal. KACZ's 'Run It' is another atmospheric dance floor bubbler with fleshy drums and funk to spare. Danny Cruz's 'Piano Hustle' then brings some epic rock riffs to a fat disco beat that will make an explosive mark on the floor. BDK's 'Let Her Know' closes with a more heartfelt sound laced up with some lovely trumpets and funky bass loops.

Every bit of lo-fi funk and disco this label deals in comes with a healthy dose of romance and this one from Marshall Titus is another case in point. 'Take A Chance' is full of steamy promise and retro-future 80s synth work over crunchy drums. The vocal is alluring and sensuous and the bassline further pulls you in. On the flip is a more raw and affected alternate version.

The 'live digital' tune has never before been released which is a wrong that is rightly corrected here and is even more special as it has Errol Dunkley on the rhythm even though it is not his usual style. It is a heavy stepper with loopy drums and hits that echo off to infinity as he drops his loved-up vocals over the. It of course comes with a superb dub on the flip.

Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Review: It's been a hell of a long time since Kieran Hebden released a full-length album; Sixteen Oceans and Parallel both came out in 2020 and made for twin final inculcations of his twinkly, stellar dance sound. Three, by contrast, comes a full four years later and promises a return to a relaxed space for the artist, recalling the woodside studio space that facilitated his inauguration as a meme. Not quite abandoning the EDM bent, 'Daydream Repeat' recalls those earlier projects, but the likes of 'Three Drums' and 'Loved' are by contrast much more measured, soft-breaksy constructions in sound, recalling a more radical return to hip-hop than house.

It finds him working with label regulars Homer Steinweiss & Nick Movshon, who take care of production and play on the recordings. 'Footwork' is a vibrant fusion of soul, funk, and jazz that, as a trumpeter for the renowned band The Dap-Kings, brings his distinctive style to the forefront and infuses each track with infectious energy and groove. Dynamic horn arrangements, tight rhythms, and soulful melodies all make this one special and show just how skilled a musician Guy is, and apparently, there is plenty more to come.

Review: Northern England has this way of capturing the imagination. Sure, many of its towns feel half-forgotten in unromantic ways, infrastructure is appalling, and you've got the whole low life expectancy thing compared with every other region in the country. Push beyond all that, though, and when you're out exploring these corners the sense of adventure, or breaking out from the world we've created and coming face to face with nature's design can be hard to ignore.
Richard Skelton has never bothered trying - his works have long-since celebrated the unfettered, wild and remote feeling of escaping to somewhere up there, out past that last pub on the right. On Selenodesy, he takes the organic, textured soundscape idea that has defined so much of his work and adds in electronic synthesis to create something human, earthly, but also subtly alien in sound.

Chances are you've already heard it, but if not, we can confirm that it's a genuinely brilliant set that more than lives up to the dizzy heights of its Mercury Prize-winning predecessor, 2021's Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. Constructed in great sonic detail by long-term production partner InFlo - all sultry strings, head-nodding R&BV beats, sampled horns, background and chorus vocals from Cleo Sol and warming bass - the ten-track set contains some of Little Simz's most potent lyrics - all of which are delivered with the kind of seamless, London-accented flow that we've come to expect from her. Another triumph from one of the UK's greatest MCs.

It is the band's first album since the passing of lead singer John Lydon's wife and has already been teased with lead single 'Hawaii' which is a tribute to her. It is a standout here with real pain in the delivery and melancholy in the guitars. As always, Lydon gets his moan on with his lyrics, talking of the evils of the modern world and the young people in it. He does so with his usual captivating style and delivery while the music keeps up the style of the band's last two albums.
