Running Free (reissue)

Punk/Hardcore
Running Free (3:14)
What Do You Know? (3:19)
Review: Seminal UK punk band Buzzcocks had a mega first run of success before a near decade long hiatus in the 90s and then a welcome return. 'Running Free' comes form that first chapter - 1980, to be precise, and is a much sought after new wave and rock blend written by Steve Diggle. It's a raw, high energy sound with punchy drum funk and squealing melodic leads. This limited 7" is backed with 'What Do You Know?', a rabble-rousing anthem with walls of sleazy guitar and wild vocals.

Review: We cannot get enough of Washington, DC-based label Peoples Potential Unlimited. It deals in a particular brand of lo-fi funk and disco with a hit of the leftfield about it. This time out they unearth some lost recordings from Landyhill (Timex Social Club) Bay Area funk. It has the rude girl vocals of Jamie Vallo over crunchy beats, squeaking synth motifs and raw drum work. Word on the street is more demos have been found from the same era and are to be unveiled soon, but this previously unreleased jam is a great starter.

Review: As far as timeless deep house classics go, Loose Ends's 'Cheap Talk' is right up there. It is a mid-tempo cut with some steamy overtones and has all the key elements from warm and dusty groove to soulful atmospheres. The track's smooth bassline, lush chords, and hypnotic vocals all draw you in deep and invite you to lose yourself on the dancefloor in the same way now that they did back in 1991. This MCA reissue features the extended remixed version as well as a B-side Bad Boy mix that gets more raw and heavy.

Review: Stretched across three discs, this deliberately classics-heavy compilation does a decent job in joining the dots between r&b in the modern sense of the term (I.E smooth and soulful vocal workouts underpinned by hip-hop style beats) with the original American definition (music of black origin). In practice, that means hits by Fugees, Usher, Toni Braxton, Brandi & Monica and En Vogue sitting side by side with Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, the formative house brilliance of Ten City, the UKG-adjacent exploits of Craig David and Blazin' Squad, the pop-tastic songs of Pussycat Dolls, Cleopatra and Britney Spears, the street soul of Soul II Soul, and the tear-jerking reggae brilliance of Dawn Penn.

Review: As the title makes clear, this three-disc, unmixed collection has one simple aim: to soundtrack kitchen discos, living room dances and long car journeys with a jam-packed selection of disco hits and disco-tinged pop favourites. It does a good job at that, even if some of the selections tend towards the lesser-known end of the commercial disco spectrum, with all three discs showcasing such disco must-haves and part-starting sing-alongs as Dan Hartman's soaring 'Relight My Fire' (famously covered by Take That in the 90s), Diana Ross's 'I'm Coming Out', Chaka Khan's inspired 'Young Hearts Run Free', Grace Jones' punk-funk Roxy Music cover 'Love Is The Drug', McFadden & Whitehead's epic 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now' and Cheryl Lynn's peerless 'Got To Be Real'.

Review: The uber powerful voice of Jamaican reggae singer songwriter John Holt appeared on countless seminal singles and albums - our favourite being 1974's superbly entitled 10000 Volts of Holt. It was a year earlier that he dropped this single on Clocktower. 'My Happiness' is a steady ska sound with natty acoustic guitar riffs and neat little motifs under a freeform trumpet that rises from the mix. His trademark gravelly vocals are all present and correct, too, of course, with a version on the flip that stops them away and leaves the drums to roll.

Review: Buoyed by the international success of the band's unique blend of psychedelic Latin rock and jazz fusion, Santana landed in the UK in 1976 for a series of concerts. One of these, at London's Hammersmith Odeon, was captured on tape for broadcast on British radio. It's this incendiary and freewheeling set - or at least a big portion of it - that's presented on this fantastic live album. Starting with a rendition of their heavy, funked-up, Latin-tinged take on Fleetwood Mac's 'Black Magic Woman', Carlos Santana - whose expressive, stretched-out guitar solos take centre stage throughout - and his band-mates laid down exceptional, extended and partly improvised versions of such classics as 'Gypsy Queen', 'Revelations' and - most explosively - 'Soul Sacrifice'.

Review: Given her length of service (her first appearance as a guest vocalist was way back in 1992), it seems extraordinary that The Love Invention is officially Alison Goldfrapp's debut solo album. It's a typically sparkling, colourful and entertaining affair, taking the synth-pop sound that marked out her long collaboration with Will Gregory as Goldfrapp, and injecting it with a big dose of dance-pop energy. It's hardly a radical recalibration of her sound, though the influence of some of her collaborators - most notably co-producer Richard X (who was involved in some of the album's strongest moments) - is certainly evident. Goldfrapp naturally stars throughout, channelling her inner Roisin Murphy, with highlights including the sub-heavy, house-influenced synth-pop strut of 'So Hard So Hot', the vibrant 'The Love Injection' and catchy opener 'Never Stop'.

Review: On his first album for the admirable Lontano Series label, Spanish ambient producer David Cordedo offers up alluring, immersive soundscapes inspired by his love of wandering through woods and forests. It's easy to imagine the sun peeping through a canopy of leaves and branches on sunrise-ready opener 'The Great Sadness', while the sustained chords, drowsy sound design and reverb-laden organ notes of 'Orma' evoke mental images of becalmed woodland clearings at nightfall. While the concept may be loose, the music - and especially the sublime, slowly unfurling 'All Your Silences' and the bubbling, Pete Namlook-esque 'Los Alcornocales' - is magical enough to both follow the brief and work as an enveloping, life-affirming ambient masterpiece. In a word: picturesque!

The Sorcerers - "In Pursuit Of Shai Hulud" (3:41)
The Yorkshire Film & Television Orchestra - "The Anderson Spectrum" (3:00)
Review: The Sorcerers have been a mainstay of the ATA Records imprint since it was founded in their home city of Leeds back in 2015. Here, the Yorkshire combo, whose primary influences have always been Ethopian "Ethio-jazz" and obscure European horror soundtracks, return to action with a heavyweight dancefloor workout. In truth "In Search of Sha Hulud" is a far more funk-fuelled affair than you might expect, with exoitic Middle Eastern melodies and fluttering flute solos rising above killer drum breaks and a seriously heavy bassline. Turn to the flipside for "The Anderson Spectrum", a pitched-down, 1960s style library funk jam credited to The Yorkshire Film and Television Orchestra, which appears to be another project helmed by leading members of the Sorcerers.

Review: When he sat down to record and produce Tender, his latest album, Mormito Naoki decided to take a different approach. Before beginning work, he assembled a huge array of musical snippets - strummed guitar notes, twinkling piano motifs, echoing keyboard sounds and so on - and fuzzy field recordings. He then "carved and reconstructed" these further, before stripping back the dense sound collage and arranging what's left. The resultant tracks hiss, pop and crackle, but uniformly offer breezy, morning-fresh beauty that hazily blurs the boundaries between loopy experimentalism, folksy minimalism, softly shuffling ambient beauty and yearning Balearic bliss. A genuinely inspired album all told.

Review: Jonny Benavidez is the soul star we can't get enough of right now and thankfully he is back with another doozy with Cold Diamond & Mink, whose mesmeric grooves make for another sublime voyage. This new 7" is a double-sider that has tunes taken from the My Echo, Shadow and Me album and 'Do What You Wanna Do,' is a lovely dancer with buttery top lines from Benavidez, rolling grooves, backing vox and big horns embellishing it yet further. On the B-side is 'Your Last Song,' a more bluesy and downtempo sound that is packed with powerful melodies that you wont't be able to stop humming.

Torn Up
Review: Berlin-based soul crew The Frank Popp Ensemble recorded their Out Of Town album in a flash of inspiration at the start of 2022, but the roots of the project lie in those weird lockdown times when Popp connected with a young vocalist called Jesper Munk. The pairing of Popp's breezy soul-pop and Munk's easy-on-the-ear croon is a match made in heaven, and the 'Out Of Town' single itself has a classic feel which just seems right on a 7". Unique have done the right thing and pressed it up with 'Torn Up' on the flip, dinked the centre hole and sent it out in the direction of juke joints the world over.

This is a vital one for the collection that has been pressed in limited quantities and is a non-album 45rpm that he recorded for legendary producer Bunny Lee at Randy's in Jamaica. Review: Two of Finnish label Timmons regulars in their house band Cold Diamond & Mink and heart-melting vocalist Emilia Sisco come together once more here following previous successes such as 2019's vital 7", 'Don't Believe You Like That'. The gorgeous 'Trouble' has wah-wah pedals and slow-turning rhythms imbued with lush soul from Sisco under laissez-faire horns. 'It'll Get Better' is more intimate with organ chords shimmering over a sentimental groove. These are two timeless jams that could be forgotten 60s classics as much as great new cuts.

Review: Posthuman's Balkan Vinyl imprint is back with a third installment in the Kanlab series. Chevron is at the buttons and on a clear mission to destroy the dance floor with fresh acid explosions. This latest limited 7" starts with 'Manctronix', a manic mix of brutal breakbeats, fizzing acid madness and eerie vocals that are chopped up and well deployed throughout the mix. There is even more of a prickly and unruly texture to 'Unity' which spits out all manner of sounds on a constant basis, never letting you lock in and instead staying firmly on the seat of your pants.

Review: Balkan Vinyl's popular Kanlab series is back with a fourth volume here from Echaskech. It comes on 7" and features two tidy electro cuts. The first, 'Shadow Freaks,' is all about the bleeping synth arps that ride up and down the scale as smeared pads and hosting silvery beats bring the rhythms. On the flipside, 'Appetance' rides on a more minimal beat framework with eerie pads conveying a sense of the unknown as you travel between distant planets at great speed. Two more gems from this fine series, then.

Review: Whisper it quietly, but 40 years into the career, the Pet Shop Boys might be about to release their best album in decades. We'll have to wait for that set, Nonetheless, but this taster single - produced, like the LP, by James Ford - certainly suggests we're in for a treat. 'Loneliness' is prime PSB, with sweeping strings, soaring orchestration and double-tracked Neil Tennant vocals rising above a Giorgio Moroder style bassline, metronomic electronic drums and smart synth-work from Chris Lowe. Grandiose, polished synth-pop excellence, basically. As always, the accompanying B-sides are excellent, too, with the cowbell heavy 'Party In The Blitz' (a kind of Pets-do-LCD soundsystem workout) being followed by the moody, analogue-rich electronic chug of 'Through You (Extended Mix)'.

The 45rpm is a fresh and updated take on Rene y Rene's legendary version of 'Mi Corazon Esta Llorando', which is a tough groove for sure but which comes with some sweet melodies and sunshine vibes for sure. It's now getting reissued by the original label Hot Shot on tidy 45 rpm. The original is led by a gloriously innocent flute that plays its own happy tune while deeper bass and brass sounds compliment it over a lively little rhythm. It's the instrumental on the a-side, and the vocal on the flip-side, weirdly, with some subtle and soulful vocals musing on the greatness of a spring day.

It was written during recent album sessions at The Nave Studios in Leeds and finds them expanding on their signature dynamics and expansive sounds with reverb heavy vocals and plenty of atmospheric arrangements. There is as much delightful beauty in the innocent chords of 'Track 3' as there is menacing darkness in the track before. 'Track 4' is another piece of ambient with meaningful synths and rippling chords that prove deep thought and then the deep rhythms of 'Track 5' are underpinned by shadowy bass and a sense of foreboding. 'Track 6' closes out with a playful broken beat and sense of optimism that leaves you wanting more.

Review: Sometimes reunions can be awkward. A load of people who lost touch trying to ignore the nagging 'whys' and 'what ifs' of their now-fractured shared histories, while attempting to 'catch up' on what's been going on since they fell out of regular contact ages ago. Thankfully, Warpaint's return to the release schedule after a two year hiatus, and their return to Rough Trade, the label they started out on, only feels right. Common Blue is a two-sided single that also serves as a reminder of why we fell for the band in the first place, 20 years ago (if that doesn't make you feel old, more references are available). The title track is best described as an earthy-groover, melodies effortlessly flowing over hushed vocals, arrangement wrapped around a strolling rhythm. In comparison, 'Underneath' takes the tempo down, beautiful sung harmonies and gentile guitar chords creating the sonic equivalent to a summer afternoon by the lake.

A Noiseless Noise
Review: Following a couple of years spent re-releasing many of her classic albums, alongside sets featuring demo versions of the same songs, Polly Jean Harvey is finally ready to release a new album - her first for seven long years. Reunited with long-time collaborators John Parish and Flood, Harvey delivers alluring, at times otherworldly songs - delivered beautifully and with more than a hint of world-weary emotions - backed by sparse, effects-laden instrumentation, metronomic grooves and plenty of pastoral, folk-influenced intent. We've not listened to the lyrics intently enough (yet) to adequately discuss their themes, but in advance Harvey's label promised "biblical images and references to Shakespeare" amongst the introspection and hard-worn commentary.

So Funny (2:26)
Review: Dimas Garza made his breakaway from The Royal Jesters in the mid '60s. His solo career was something of a reinvention under the new alias Dimas III and saw him record three singles for Clown, a label run, ironically, by The Jesters. They have all since become very hard to find and expensive records that are much sought after so it's great they now make it back to press courtesy of Numero Group. 'So Funny' and 'I Won't Love You Again' are both posse dup dee on this fine 45rpm and make for some steamy Southern soul. Somehow, Garza never broke out of his own locale but he did leave a great musical legacy.

Crazy (2:36)
Review: Based out of Brooklyn, New York, The Still Brothers is a group made up of two childhood friends, Andrew LeCoche of Ula Ruth and Evan Heinze from The Shacks. They started their musical adventure way back in the 6th grade. In the decade since they have managed to record and tour with their own respective groups, as well as work on their own distinctive brand of indie together. Here they tap up Sloshy for a feature on a new 7" that comes via Lewis. 'It's Not Over' is a dreamy cut lush vocal harmonies and lo-fi drums making for a beautifully melancholic sound. 'Crazy' has slightly more primate drum breaks and the Shoshy is just as smooth.

Review: Tuck in your napkin and get seated comfortably for six plates of delicious broken beat and nu jazz funk from Tapes on the small but already well-formed Mida label. These superbly cosmic studies in sound are packed with finely tuned frequencies, cymbals and drums, silky spacecraft arps, video game sounds and playful keys that scatter through arrangements to trippy effect. All of that is underpinned by the sort of hefty low end that locks you in and the whole thing is an ever-shifting sound world that sounds both ancient yet futuristic. Sublime.

Review: Germany's mighty fine Tramp label asks you to enjoy some Sax on The Rocks here courtesy of mod-soul monster Gus Brendel. This classic of the genre has never been available on 45rpm before now and is sure to fly off the shelves as a result. It's a sax laced - obviously - seducer with a funky rhythm and steaming hot organ chords doing a busy dance. If you flip it over, you'll find a real ass-wiggler in the form of 'Arabian Nights' which was actually recorded a couple of years before the title track on the A-side. It's another steamy dance floor gem.

Review: Sean Bowie's fifth full-length as Yves Tumor arrives with an epic title (the academically minded will be debating its meaning for years to come), a grandiose electro-rock/post-punk goes-electroclash sound, and a bagful of valedictory reviews. It's basically an extension of Bowie's previous work with a few twists, but that's no bad thing; after all, the artist's distinctive sound and strong songs have always been an impressive calling card. Highlights are plentiful, from the fizzing, 21st century punk-funk of 'Lovely Sewer', and the Prince-does-Nine Inch Nails-flex of 'Parody', to the alternately jangling and sleazy 'Operator', and the post-ESG dancefloor heaviness of 'Fear Evil Like Fire'.

Review: Junior & The Classics dropped these super heavy funk cuts on Lenny LaCour's Magic Touch label and now Tramp reissues them for us all to enjoy once more. This is the first time they have been available on 45rpm and first up is 'Kill The Pain.' It's a raw one with big breaks and lung-busting lyrics next to horns to make you spin. 'Mix Up' (A Go Go) is another one that rustles up a raucous funk vibe with layers of busy drums, wooden percussion and vocals that have a hint of 60s swing and soul to them.

He he arrives on Central Scientific for its inaugural release with Detroit-based producer and Akka & BeepBeep founder, Jo Rad Silver, taking care of the flip. Next to an array of hardware, there is plenty of improvisation with guitars in this EP - 'Experiment Obscura' is a widescreen and dramatic ambient cut with a meditative feel and 'Immersion Theatre III' is another empty but inviting piece with curlicues, wispy pads, distant guitar echoes and moodiness to spare.

Review: Lady Wray's Piece of Me is a second sizzling album of superb soul. It marked something of a homecoming for the artist as she debuted on this label back in 2016 and found her leaning towards her usual soul and r&b as well as more hip-hop influences than ever: classic boom-bap drums and chunky bass hist loud and proud and for that reason the originals are ripe for remixing as they are here. Two legends of the game in Pete Rock and Ghostface Killah step up and bring their own signature sound and dusty drum beats to make for a crucial little 7".

They kick this one off with 'Stanky Funk' which features Bootie Brown and brings some old school cool, plenty of retro organ chords and noodling basslines that will tie the dance floor in knots. Review: The Harlem Gospel Traveler's much loved second album Look Up won the group plenty of fans so this follow up release is much anticipated indeed. 'Help Me To Understand' comes with the heavenly vocals of Aaron Frazer and was written and produced by Eli "Paperboy" Reed. It's a tune defined by its spine tinging vocal harmonies and lullaby like melodies with emotive acoustic guitars adding extra layers of lushness. As well as that new tune, this 45rpm comes backed with the still superb title track from the aforementioned album.

Review: Leon Leiffer formed The Blackstones in 1974, but since then the band has been through a number of different line-up changes. The current lineup features Leiffer with Tony Mahoney, Jr. Bailey and A.J. Franklin and this new 7" offers two tunes from their tried and tested repertoire. First is a contemporary rework of William DeVaughn's US 70's soul classic that Massive Attack sampled so well, namely 'Be Thankful', and on the flip is a version of Yabby You's roots reggae cut 'Deliver Me' from the 1970s. Both are packed with heat and great musicianship to update them for modern sound systems.

Review: Gladys Knight & The Pips surely need no introduction - they are of such legendary status that they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. That was 12 years after they dropped this spellbinding single on Radio Active Gold. It was written and produced by the great Curtis Mayfield and now gets pressed up to this 7" on Collectables. The drums are raw and the vocals are equally expressive as they build a hard-hitting soul vibe. Flip it over for the more heartbroken sound of 'I Feel A Song (In My Heart)'.

Each one is a pure and cathartic meditation on minimalist drones that are deft and wispy. The compositions are smartly layered up and slowly ascend to the heavens with subtle spaces between notes and long tails making their mark on your heat. Says the artist, "this is an album for floating away while calling out vowels in reverse alphabetical order" - and we love it.

Chicago's Magic Touch label was a low key affair, but jams like this ensure its impact remains strong to this day as LaJohn and Sheela lay down the feeling in no uncertain terms. Review: Six Minute Mile has rightly got plenty of attention for its first few outings and their early good work connotes with this eight 7". It's from Ohio's Wesley Bright who has joined forces with The Means of Production and New York's Ben Pirani, and is a lovely mid-tempo roller that reminds of balmy summer nights. The tune comes in two parts and opens with lovely Rhodes chords that are a great foundation for the tenor vocals of Wesley. Then come plenty of irresistible hooks and the rousing vocals sing of love and devotion like all good soul sounds should.

No Love (4:01)
Review: Nottingham-born Birch is probably best known as a founding member of post punkers the Raincoats, although fans will quickly want to add her reputation as an interdisciplinary enigma, with a proven ability as filmmaker alongside the music. Last year - 2021, in case there were doubts - she unveiled her first foray as a solo artist in the form of the single, 'Feminist Song'. Now she's back to prove that wasn't just a one-off.

Opening with the title number, 'Wish I Was You', we get a real flavour of who we're dealing with. The track feels edgy as anyone could ask for, all squealing guitars and strained vocal style, a dense, thick pool of noise that still keeps more than enough form to bring in listeners who are less inclined to experimental ends of rock. Flip to find 'Now Love' on an altogether more downtempo vibe, low slung bass and an eerie-yet-swagger-filled sound.

Review: Exactly pinpointing the essence of Little Dragon's sound is tough - it's always soulful and groovy, but it's not soul in the classic sense and there's plenty of other musical influences in the mix - but by now it barely matters. Each of their albums thus far has been special, and Slugs of Love is no exception. The Swedish four-piece impresses early with the head-nodding grooves, echoing house pianos and swirling atmospherics of 'Frisco', opts for a New York no-wave disco flex on 'Slugs of Love', and offers a perfect platform for mic man JID to the warped, hip-hop-goes-synth-pop shuffle of 'Stay'. There are highlights aplenty elsewhere across the album too, with our picks including Damon Albarn hook-up 'Glow', the moody house-not-house of 'Gold' and the picturesque, breakbeat-driven pop breeziness of 'Tumbling Dice'.

Review: Powers That Be is a heavyweight modern funk outfit which counts some serious talent in its ranks. Antibalas drummer and bassist Miles Francis and Phenomenal Handclap Band's guitarist Luke O'Malley are but two of the gifted players laying down a vintage style of deep funk on this sureshot 7" for Mighty Eye. You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a holy grail cut from the 70s, given how warm and natural the sound on the record is, but there's also a degree of finesse on both sides of the record which speaks to the band's collective endeavours in pushing classic funk forwards in the modern era.

Review: Astonishingly, almost 14 years have passed since the release of Everything But The Girl's previous - and many assumed final - album, 'Temperamental'. Since then, husband-and-wife team Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn have delivered plenty of solo music rooted in deep house, nu-disco and contemporary synth-pop, and it is those sounds - along with nods to their acoustic past - that dominate Fuse, their surprise new album. While the set undoubtedly feels fresh and contemporary, the key ingredients that made their music so alluring - not least Thorn's distinctive, world-weary lead vocals and introspective lyrics - remain front and centre. The results are uniformly impressive, with highlights including the slow-motion, piano-laden r&b-pop of 'Run a Red Light', the sub-heavy, garage-influenced brilliance of 'Nothing Left To Lose' and the glossy IDM-pop shimmer of 'No One Knows We're Dancing'.
