Cat: TL 005. Rel: 27 Apr 23

Techno
Mist (5:55)
Scatter (6:55)
Spread (5:40)
Rhetorical (5:50)
Review: Madrid-based hypnotic techno expert Alfonso Lopez, known as Aiken, has released music on some of the genre's finest imprints such as M_Rec, Semantica, and local label Non Series. His latest offering, The 'Mist' EP, comes from his own imprint, Timeline, and consists of four impressive cuts. On the A-side, the title track and 'Scatter' offer cyclical tools with an intense, strobe-like attack that pushes the listener into mental overdrive. On the flip side, 'Spread' feels influenced by Jeff Mills and 'Rhetorical' delivers yet more powerful peak-time energy.

The Dusk Hour (5:33)
Transmax (6:26)
Avia (5:09)
Early Birmingfunk (5:08)
Rwina (6:44)
Review: Remco Beekwilder's The Dusk Hour EP is a perfect way for the Emerald label to mark its fifth anniversary and 17th release: it is uncompromising techno through and through. Hints of 90s hard techno colour the driving drums and textured percussion of 'The Dusk Hour' while 'Transmax' is a loopy affair with oversized hi hat ringlets and more thumping kicks. This linear, driving style defines the B-side, too, with detail coming from distant vocal wails on 'Avia' and Detroit minimalism on 'Early Birmingfunk' while 'Rwina' closes out with a bang.

Junior Dread - "Rise" (EchoBoy remix) (4:52)
Riddim Tuffa - "Zulu Dub" (EchoBoy remix) (5:06)
Review: It's not often we hear of a new label launching out of the Czech Republic but that's what we get here with Energy Of Dub. It's EchoBoy aka Adam from pioneering digital reggae revivalists Riddim Tuffa who steps up with the goods in the form of two remixes of classic sound system tunes. They are both still deep in the Jamaican style but come with much darker hearts and hefty contemporary low-end frequencies. The A-side is a steppas remix of Junior Dread's 2103 cut 'Rise' from the Peng Sound label then on the flip is a 2016 Zulu Dub tune with a majestic flute lead that brings the vibes.

Review: Last year, Brian Eno served up his latest critically acclaimed album in the form of FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE. Now he follows it up with the much anticipated instrumental version. Despite his advancing years and the sheer scope of what he has already accomplish dint he ambient world - not least devising the genre in the first place - Eno still manages to excite and intrigue here. The artwork alone is beautiful, and the music inside is similarly lush - widescreen cosmic soundscapes with subtle melodies and shifting timbres, pregnant empty space and a knack for sounds designs with meaning few others can match.

Review: The music industry is full of unsung heroes. We tried to recognise that during the pandemic, when #wemakeevents trended and even the general public was talking about how much roadies get paid and what lighting technicians might do until concerts return. Songwriters are another example of professionals that don't always get their dues. Aaron Schroeder is one of them.

Well, OK, admittedly, anyone who penned five number one hits for Elvis Presley, and a further 12 classic tracks on The King's behalf, probably did pretty well out of it. And die hard fans, cultural critics and those who bother to read credits will be familiar with his name. Nevertheless, it's rare for the writers to form the focal point of a compilation album, which is the case here: a record packed with largely alternative takes on classic songs recorded between 1956 and 1962, created by Schroeder, perfected by Presley

Review: To mark the 20th Anniversary of the American Life Mix Show Mix, this new album brings together eight songs that also honour the life and work of Peter Rauhofer, a notorious remixer who did many such great works for Madonna for over two decades. Six of these tunes are brand new edits of Madonna's top commercial and promotional remixes from the 'American Life' era that have never been released before. The two others are a superb Ralphi Rosario House Vocal Mix of 'Love Profusion' and Deepsky's Home Sweet Home Vocal Edit of 'Hollywood.'

Review: David Shire has one hell of a back catalogue. Active within music since the 1960s, and specifically theatre and film soundtracks in the 1970s, while many of the biggest names behind movie scores have a tendency to explore the same avenues, and therefore wind up creating tunes for relatively similar flicks, in this case that's not really true. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (the original, of course), All The President's Men, and parts of Saturday Night Fever give some idea as to the breadth of his mastery.
The Conversation slips right in there in terms of period and genre, but is, of course, a very different classic to a movie about a New York subway train getting hijacked or social tensions in Brooklyn at the height of the disco era. While largely focused on piano solos, we also get late night dance floor jazz, tense drone, and moody avant-garde, just in case the on-screen action wasn't brooding enough already.

Review: Is there much left to say about Francis Ford Coppola's epic gangster trilogy, The Godfather? We've analysed the symbolism, critiqued the performances, and pondered on how the third part was such a let down so many times, with film history tutors across the world driven to madness, or at least distraction, by the endless stream of first year essays about the use of orange as a colour to foreshadow death and tragedy.
Even the rightly acclaimed soundtrack has been discussed and assessed a hundred times over. Nevertheless, some things are still worth pointing out. One of several instances in which the late, great composer Carmine Coppola scored his son's movies, it's grand, refined, and at times almost has the qualities of the musical accompaniment to a great ballet. Suffice to say, it's more than fitting for the cinematic odyssey in question

Review: Aiden Francis brings a superb mix of influences to this EP, from trance to breaks, house to tech house and it makes for a third fine offering from this young but promising Ellipse label. 'Atacama' opens up with blistering pace and molten synths tightly woven over the propulsive drums. 'Twilight' is another track seeped in lush melodies and with a throwback techno sounds that is full of subtle dancefloor electronics. 'Awareness' (Sunset mix) is one to get the hands in the air as the trancey chords and acid rain down. Energy levels don't dip on the flip either on this most powerful and consuming of space-techno trips.

Review: Neapolitan Soul Records unveils a new EP, featuring two stunning tracks. The first, 'Just Breathe on Me', is an elegantly deep and energetic Afro-disco groove that features rich percussion and an 'underground' atmosphere. The second track is a collaboration between the Neapolitan producer and London DJ/producer Ace Shyllon, remixing the track 'See My Love', originally produced with Luciano Gioia. The remix merges voice, groove, synth and pads into a sensual and incisive groove suitable for the demanding underground dancefloor. A must-have EP for all deep house enthusiasts.

Review: The Martin Denny reissue series continues at pace with one of his most sought-after albums. Exotic Moog was initially released in 1969 and pretty much does what it says on the tin - takes the iconic Moog synth and conjures up all manner of exotic and spaced-out sounds that leave you laying back and gazing on in awe. There's a retro-future feel to them which makes them all the more likable, and though some are beatless pieces of suspensory scene-setting, there are some breezy grooves like 'I Talk To The Trees' and sentimental space waltzes like 'The Enchanted Sea'. A characterful world of cinematic sounds for sure.

Review: Several years deep into their quest to amplify their homeland's rich funk talent, Eastern European collective Estonian Funk Embassy level up with this exceptional compendium of tracks written and recording during Estonia's time under Soviet control. The first time most of these records have been released and distributed beyond domestic release, it's a total treasure trove of grooves ranging from upbeat, big band-led swing ("Keskoosamba"), thigh-slapping horn-heavy funk ("Rasked Veosed"), smokier, lounge-lapping jazzier influences ("Naed Vaid Oma Silmi"), sleazy disco funk ("Sa Haara Kinni Mu Kaest" and many shades in between. Capturing Estonia's musical legacy in all directions, this is a genuinely unique record.

Review: Josh Wicks' Transient London Records returns with its sophomore release and it's another impressive various artists affair. Zlatnichi & Mila C kicks things off with the hypnotising 'Mengaelerai' on the A-side, followed by Romanian minimal hero Robert Apetrei (Dubsons) on the darkly sublime backroom dub of 'Porata Hill'. Over on the flip, Frenchman Lukea delivers some glacially-edged minimal house for the afterhours on 'Amethyst' and finally, boss man Wicks closes it out with the proper UK tech house style of 'Exotic'.

Review: Video games have become one of the biggest industries in the world, but they would be nothing without an epic soundtrack to match. Plenty of them have become cult classics in their own right and Inon Zur's Fallout 76 is a strong candidate for that title. It is a hugely emotional rollercoaster with rich, lush orchestration and quivering strings themes dramatic of moods and over bearing atmospheres. You don't need the accompanying game to be swept up and taken on a journey with this one, which comes on four sides of black and transparent yellow vinyl.

They bend genres, break new ground and draw on their own respective backgrounds as iconic author and a unique musical ensemble to make for something that is part songwriting, part poetry, part story-telling and utterly beautiful.

Review: Correcciones Calypso returns from a generous hiatus with the fourth edition of its acclaimed edit series, replete with four re-edits that veer from the subtle to the downright brazen. Thomass Jackson and INigo Vontier invite the French duo Youkounkoun to open proceedings with an insane early 80s edit full of big drums and exotic touches that's been blowing dancefloors all around the world for the past years - and definitely resides in the brazen category, despite a lot of work having gone into it. To complete the release label bosses Thomass and INigo deliver edits of their own with their characteristic sound, giving this EP maximum a value for money factor and entertainment from start to finish.

Zimbabwe-born and later London-based Mataya "Clifford" Chewaluza was a core part of the vibrant West London music scene, using his songwriting, production and multi-instrumentalist skills on albums for RCA and Virgin. He also dropped a few 12"s and this one was released in 1988. He is now set to start 2023 in an equally strong fashion with four more futuristic bass fusions. 'Wire' is a minimal stepper with bursts of bass and flitting percussive lines. This blistering electro EP features three originals that mix up industrial textures with caustic drums and star-gazing synth work. 'Vivre' is an eye-watering opener with sheet metal sounds and frosty pads, 'Kraft' is then a slower more pensive electro soundscape and 'Vertabre' has a truly brutal groove that will rattle the walls of any club space, as well as dislodge brain cells. Now the sonic shapeshifter serves up a first EP for Adeen that packs in five killer cuts. 'La Culebra' kicks off with big horns and Latin rhythms which carry on through the dance-heavy 'Mi Amor'. 'Que Rico' kicks off on the flip with another dense arrangement packed with cowbells, funky bass riffs, woodblock hits, shakers and plenty more. Their music spans from deep minimal to deep techno, and even touches on ambient drone sounds. The EP's A-side showcases Rominimal-style grooves, like on the rolling, bass-driven hypnotism of Aura'. On the B-side, 'Ethereal Dancefloor Dub' keeps the party going into Sunday with its subtle acid inflections. Finally, the EP closes on a blissed-out note with 'Ayapel', an airy and sun-kissed breakbeat track that would be perfect for a sunrise set.

Review: The eleventh studio album by prolific American rock band Pearl Jam, Gigaton was originally released in March 2020 and sold out almost instantly. Now getting a re-run on US label Monkeywrench, fans have a second chance at adding this standout release to their collection. Typical of Pearl Jam this release features inventive instrumentation such as the 1850s-era pump organ originally played by Vedder on the 2015 demo of 'River Cross'. Featuring popular singles 'Dance of the Clairvoyants', 'Superblood Wolfmoon' and 'Quick Escape', Gigaton was undoubtedly well worth the six and half year wait. Definitely one you'll need to grab before it's gone.

Review: It feels like every couple of years a new reissue of Kikagaku Moyo's magical 2013 album Forest of Lost Children comes around, but we are not moaning. This group is "a musical union between five free spirits" or in less poetic terms, band founders Go Kurosawa (on drums and vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (on guitar and vocals) plus bass by and Akira also on guitar. Their sound is as unique as any, with psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock and more all collided into one another on an album that keeps you on your toes and guessing at what might come next even within each track, let alone across the whole album. If you're a new interested party this is a great primer for what the band is all about.

Review: This second instalment of Jazz Room's Pure Latin re-releases comes in the form of Orquesta Mayombe's masterpiece, Con Ritmo Del Tambo. First emerging in 1980 and now considered to be a classic example of Nu Yorican El Barrio sound, this is an essential record for fans of Tata Vasquez. Featuring Afro-Cubano jazz heavyweights including Chocolate Armenteros, Jose Mangual, Mauricio Smith, and Orestes Vilato, as well as an astounding seven-person percussion section, it's safe to say this release packs a punch. Travelling through ten dazzling, floor-filling cuts of Afro-Cuban via New York Jazz age tracks, this is a must-have for fans of Latin jazz.

Review: Simultaneously reaching back into the roots of Samba whilst reconfiguring the sound for a new context, Dominco Lancelloti's Sramba is an ingenious contribution to the world of Brazilian jazz. Recorded over two months in Lancelloti's home studio in Lisbon, and inspired by a couple of Russian-designed synths that came into the artist's possession, this is a project that was born out of experimentation. The opening track, 'Ere', features hypnotic guitar riffs and skittering drum sequences that gradually build into an infectious groove over the course of the track. On the B-side, 'Nada Sera De Outra Maneira' takes a softer turn with glittering hints of piano and a central narrative driven by velvety vocals. This is an exciting new take on Samba that opens up a new world of creative possibilities.

Review: Hardly The Same Snake is the second album from Skinny Pelembe and this version comes via Partisan on limited translucent red vinyl. The Johannesburg-born, Doncaster-raised artist Doya Beardmore really comes of age here, finding his own unique voice and putting it front and centre. Its gravelly baritone is unique and delivers what the artist says he would have done first time around on his debut had he been brave enough. Observations made at design exhibitions are the jumping-off point for the songs which are both visceral yet soulful as they muse on life, death, family, religion and major milestones in between.

Review: Skinny Pelembe (real name Douglas Beardmore) has always been a hard artist to pin down: a South Africa-born, Doncaster-raised singer, rapper, guitarist and producer whose music seems to exist in its own sonic space. That much was clear from his 2019 debut album on Brownswood, Dreaming is Dead Now, and is even more obvious on this hotly awaited follow-up for Partisan. Hardly The Same Snake is a riveting and highly entertaining listen, with Beardmore alternately singing and (more occasionally) rapping over gorgeous, immaculately executed backing tracks that variously mix and match elements of classic 60s pop, hip-hop, broken beat, traditional South African musical styles, future R&B, synth-pop, gospel and psychedelic dream pop.

Review: Alan Myson's latest album as Ital Tek - his eighth for Planet Mu since debuting in 2008 - is an album of contrasts, offering aural darkness and light, intensity and becalmed beauty - and sometimes within the same track. It's rooted in ambient, experimental electronica and what would once be called IDM, but Myson has gone to great efforts to avoid stylistic cliches and well-worn tropes. As a result, it's unpredictable but addictive, with distorted creep-outs ('Heart String') and unsettling soundscapes ('Darking') sitting side by side with cuts smothered in glacial beauty ('The Next Time You Day') and melancholic, slowly unfurling sonic bliss ('Shattered').

Review: John Shima's latest output on legendary Glasgow label, Seventh Sign, is a enveloping four-tracker existing in the blissful realms of Shima's distinct soundworld. Opening track, 'Connection', moves in circles. An object in orbit deftly weaving between pin-point sonic details, to create an elegant pattern driven by an undeniable groove. 'Pixels' glitters with high-end percussive elements, glancing off glass surfaces and reverberating in a dream-hued space. The final (and titular) track, 'Tokyo Nights', is a wonky groover with dance-ready zero-gravity kicks, the perfect close to the 'Tokyo Nights' sonic narrative.

Review: LNS and DJ Sotofett explore a new direction on their latest EP, 'The Reformer,' released on Tresor Records. Moving away from their debut album, the duo fuses digital artifacts, scanner sounds, and vocoder voices with melodic colors that radiate across cold electro landscapes. The opening track, 'Reform,' takes a deep dive into the electro sound, while 'Plexistorm' blends synthesised strings with arpeggiated acidic bleeps. 'Electric Terraforming' uncovers charged energy sources for life on another planet, and '909 The Controller' features washes of dub over a skipping beat, with a slow, rippling melody and percolating synths. The vinyl version includes exclusive locked grooves by DJ Sotofett.

Review: Marking the next edition of We're Going Deep's solo series, the label reaches out to the talents of UK based songwriter and producer, James Shinra to produce a heavyweight four-track EP, tunneling through heady 303 excursions. 'Jaunt' kicks things off with a bang, a meteoric bassline drives forward a deep, hypnotic melody which journeys into the far reaches of outer space. Another standout track, 'Flexion', reveals a softer, more contemplative side to Shinra's sound where precise kicks slot elegantly into the melancholia-tinged melody. A wonderfully diverse yet cohesive EP from the talented UK producer, we're already keeping an eye out for what's next.

Review: Contemporary jazz heroes Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad have impressive pulling power. Since inaugurating the Jazz Is Dead series, the multi-instrumentalists-turned-producers have been able to entice a string of jazz, soul and jazz-funk greats into their Los Angeles studio, including Roy Ayers, Azymuth, Jean Carn, Marcus Valle and Phil Ranelin. They've done it again on volume 17, with all-round legend Lonnie Liston-Smith bringing his spiritually-enriching, sun-soaked jazz-funk sound to the table. His soulful, life-affirming voice soars above bustling jazz breaks, twinkling piano parts, smooth bass, flanged funk guitars, spacey synths, hazy horns and sonic translations of the Californian coastline at dusk. As brilliant as you'd expect it to be, all told.

Review: Club scene doyen, dance music veteran, and rave culture hero Johannes Auvinen opts to depart from the dance floor, at least for the time being, and deliver Arles - an ode to the other side of the electronic-acid scene, those sounds that make most sense after the chaos and carnage of a party have subsided and you're safely home on the couch with you and yours and all dearest.
And it works as well as it should, with the experience both of living in that world and making anthems for it clearly evident in the overall production quality and ideas. Arles is a warm blanket, that friendly therapist, an album that understands where you've been because it was there too. Remarkably, despite what that may suggest, this is not ambient or particularly leftfield stuff. Instead, it's rhythmic, pop-infused electronica goodness, for want of a more succinct, less awkward turn of phrase.

Produced by the band's lead guitarist Luke Morley and Andy Taylor, the material for the album was largely written by the former except for three of the tracks which were written as a collaborative effort by Morley and Gary "Harry" James, the band's drummer. Touring across the UK, Japan, Canada, and Europe following the album's release, the album was a resounding success. Based on the original and completely unabridged, this new pressing of Laughing On Judgement Day features hit singles 'Low Life in High Places', 'Everybody Wants Her', 'A Better Man' and 'Like a Satellite'.

It climbed the charts and ended up at number five, reinforcing the band's status as one of Britain's best of that era. It spawned three Top 40 singles in the shape of 'Castles in the Sand,' 'Stand Up' and 'River of Pain' and featured writing contributions from none other than Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, who had previosuly produced the group. It's a seamless mix of classic and hard rock that gets reissued now in expanded form with extra tracks including 'In a Broken Dream' (Live at Club Citta Japan, 2000) and 'Til The River Runs Dry' (Live at Nottingham Rock City, 2005).

Review: House-master, Matthias, is the latest producer to debut on the iconic Scottish Minimal/Tech house imprint, Craigie Knowes. Delivering a class EP injected with originality and outright funk, this will be a no-brainer purchase for a long list of DJs and home listeners. On the A side, 'Tube Star' arrives with a throbbing bassline, honey-sweet synths and glinting percussion. For the A2, growling electric guitar melodies meet darkened synthlines and bludgeoning kicks to produce a powerful dancefloor-ready track. On the B-side, we have Ultra Bass on remix duties, offering a bass-stroke-acid-stroke-garage take on Matthais' signature sound - this is undoubtedly a peak time track for those out-of-control moments. Closing things up, 'Wires Around My Neck' slows to a patient pace - a duet of circling synth melodies and chugging drums give this track a delectably wonky, spaced-out vibe. A wonderfully varied release that is surely set to be a favourite for this year's circuit of festivals.

That being said, there's also a great impetus to reissue his music going at the minute: Lilies is the ambient musician's fourth album, and was originally released in 2004 by City Centre Offices, a label run between Berlin and Manchester. Inspired by a trip to Japan, there is an unmistakable eco-ambient undercurrent to this album. Out of print for almost two decades, Kepler do the good work of reissuing it now: Lilies is exquisite, with its laboured rhythmatics and lush synthetic plucks providing a blueprint for generations of Western ambient (techno) artists to come.

Rising to specialist prominence in the late-1980s as a result of him playing no small part in pushing the evolution of instrumental art-hip hop forward, by the mid-1990s he was recognised among the most innovative names in synthesised leftfield, occupying a place that's as commanding as it is peaceful, a futuristic sonic world that pulls us in closer with every drum and refrain.
Icol Distil is one of his earliest releases, but certainly makes it clear that by the time he got round to putting stuff out under the Arovane guise he was already incredibly accomplished. Ear worm broken beat beauty after ear worm broken beat beauty reside on the track list, so prepare to be fully immersed.

He makes a welcome return like a long-lost son on new album Deco, a superbly accomplished record that takes its name from a sauna he frequented when he needed to decompress. Eventually, he put his musical career on hold and went to speed time with his young family and so this album was recorded after a long time away from club dance floors. It is delightfully whimsical with airy melodies, curious chords and majestic synth craft all drifting over barely-there rhythms. It's an album that provided musical therapy for Trago, and now us.
