paperback book
Notes: This guide book features various albums recorded & produced in Japan, ranged from Easy Listening, Mood Music, New Age, Ambient, Pops, Rock, Disco, New Wave, Movie OST till Cartoon OST. Under the supervision of Shotaro Matsumoto who is a famous store manager of Coconut Disc record shop, 10 writers introduce about 600 discs."Walearic" is a word coined by Matsumoto, connecting "Wa"(means "Japanese" in Japanese) and "Balearic" club music established in Ibiza, Spain through '00s. As a matter of fact, Walearic is not exactly the same as Balearic. Matsumto was inspired by the vague concept of Balearic which crossovers any genres, and coined the new genre Walearic under his own aesthetics.

As you may know, the demand for Japanese vinyls recorded in 70s & 80s has been rising among the collectors worldwide. This guide book will be the ultimate tool for them to dig the discs.

192-page humorous rap reference book with colour illustrations
Notes: Although rap music is famous for its ingenuity, double entendres and clever turns of phrase, until now no one has attempted to collect rap lyrics into an organised compendium. Enter UNDERSTAND RAP, a very funny pop-cultural reference book based on the website of the same name, which precisely explains all the confusing terms and lyrics used in rap songs in a language even the most un-hip person can understand.

The result is a book with breakout potential that's both entertaining and highly informative. The juxtaposition of dry, academic manner with Hip Hop terminology in UNDERSTAND RAP frequently lends itself to ironic comedy gold. For example: Lyric: "been servin' since you was doin' the runnin' man" Explanation: My experience selling drugs began long ago, while you were still concerning yourself with immature things like doing goofy dances where you look like you're running in place. (From Song: Rubberband Man on Album: Trap Muzik by Artist: T.I.) Understand Rap features hip hop artists of all names, colours, and creeds and organise their lyrics into the following categories: Cars, Money, Drugs/Alcohol, People, Places, Fashion, Crime/Weapons, Insults, Skills/Pride and Sex/Relationships.

576-page trade paperback book containing all 22 issues of the Touch & Go punk zine
Notes: Bazillion Points Books announces the June 2010 release of Touch & Go: The Complete Hardcore Punk Zine '79-'83, a collection of wild-eyed artefacts from the very dawn of hardcore punk, penned in poison ink by legendary frontman TESCO VEE of the MEATMEN and his partner-in-crime DAVE STIMSON, and edited by former THE FIX singer STEVE MILLER. The landmark collection of all twenty-two issues of Touch And Go magazine also includes extra archival material and new introductions by authors Tesco Vee (the Meatmen) and Dave Stimson; punk icons HENRY ROLLINS (S.O.A./BLACK FLAG), KEITH MORRIS (Black Flag/CIRCLE JERKS), COREY RUSK (NECROS/Touch and Go Records), JOHN BRANNON (NEGATIVE APPROACH), IAN MACKAYE (MINOR THREAT), and Steve Miller (The Fix); plus literary appreciation by PETER DAVIS (Your Flesh), HENRY OWINGS (Chunklet), and BYRON COLEY (Forced Exposure). Created during the key years of the American hardcore punk music underground, these acidic essays, impassioned record reviews, eyewitness gig reports, unrehearsed interviews, and incendiary artworks preserve the original thoughts and attitudes of DIY culture. Today, punk music is mainstream youth music - this is how it all happened, and this is who did it.

The book's pages are plastered with early gig flyers, inspirational artwork, eyewitness action photos, and candid vintage interviews with now-legendary squads like the Fix, Necros, Minor Threat, Youth Brigade, Iron Cross, Misfits, Negative Approach, JFA, Battalion of Saints, Crucifucks, SSD, 7 Seconds, Faith, the Effigies, Bad Religion, the Minutemen, Scream, Die Kreuzen, Crucifix, Void, Poison Idea, and others - plus hundreds of reviews of historic DIY punk, new wave, ska, industrial, no wave, and hardcore records and live shows, all captured fresh during the underground big bang by the merciless Midwestern masters of mayhem and mimeograph journalism.

576 pages, full-size 8.5"x12" paperback.

240 page illustrated paperback book featuring discussions on iconic rap songs
Notes: The Most Important Rap Song From Every Year Since 1979, Discussed, Debated, and Deconstructed.

The Rap Year Book takes readers on a journey that begins in 1979, widely regarded as the moment rap as a genre became recognised as part of music's landscape and comes right up to the present. Shea Serrano deftly pays homage to the most important song of each year. Serrano also examines the most important moments that surround the history and culture of rap music-from artists' backgrounds, to issues of race and safety, to the rise of hip-hop and the struggles among its major players-both personal and professional. Covering East Coast and West Coast, famous rapper feuds, chart toppers and show stoppers, The Rap Year Book takes an in-depth look at the last thirty-five years of the most influential genre of music to come out of the last generation. Complete with quizzes, infographics, lyric maps, hilarious and informative footnotes, portraits of the artists, and the occasional rebuttal essay by other prominent music writers, The Rap Year Book is both a narrative and illustrated guide to some of the most iconic and influential songs ever created under the umbrella of rap music. Serrano cites a variety of sources to form his arguments including biographies, magazines and documentaries, as well as his own experiences growing up at a time when hip-hop was becoming a prevalent force in the music industry. With its all-encompassing look at the ups and downs of rap music, and the landmark songs that are its tent-poles, this book will be perfect for anyone who is a fan of the genre.

486 page paperback book featuring the KPM & Bruton Music labels
Notes: The Mood Modern is not only a major study of a fascinating sector of the music industry, but also essential reading for anyone with even a passing interest in soundtrack music.

Also known variously as mood, stock, background or production music, for decades library music has made an important though anonymous contribution to the broadcast media, supplying film, radio and television with innumerable themes and underscores.

The Mood Modern is three books in one, weaving together the separate strands of company history, biography and critical assessment of some of the most important music collectively produced by the KPM and Bruton libraries during the course of a quarter century, spanning the years from 1956 to 1980. At the heart of the book, however, is the Phillips family, one of Britain's great music publishing dynasties, but in particular Robin Phillips (1939-2006).

The mid-1960s through the '70s have come to be regarded as library music's golden age. In Britain, it was when this somewhat mysterious branch of the music industry emerged from the chrysalis of its light music heritage, into a vibrant new era of modern, colourful sounds. Robin Phillips played a fundamental role in this transformation when, in 1966, he established a new library - the KPM 1000 Series. Robin would also introduce several new composers who would quickly become some of the best-known and most successful names in the library music field: Keith Mansfield, Johnny Pearson, Syd Dale, Alan Hawkshaw, James Clarke, David Lindup, Brian Bennett and Steve Gray among others. And thanks to Robin's guidance, by the early '70s the 1000 Series had become one of the world's foremost libraries, its music a ubiquitous presence in countless films, documentaries, radio programmes and television series.

Drawing on interviews with members of the Phillips family (including Peter Phillips) and many of the composers, recording engineers, musicians and staff of both libraries, The Mood Modern tells the remarkable inside story of how KPM and, subsequently, Bruton came to be dominant forces in library music, both in Britain and internationally.

In addition to charting the origin and history of the music publishing firms - Keith Prowse and Peter Maurice - that merged to form KPM, The Mood Modern covers numerous related areas. These include the birth of Britain's library music industry; the early British libraries and their inseparable link to the English light music tradition; how the arrival of commercial television in Britain led to the formation of the Keith Prowse library in 1956 under the aegis of its manager, Patrick Howgill, which paved the way for the KPM library; KPM's legacy as a famous popular music publisher and its place in the history of Denmark Street (London's Tin Pan Alley); Robin's father, legendary music publisher Jimmy Phillips; the corporate manoeuvring that saw Keith Prowse, Peter Maurice and KPM bought and sold; and the clash with management that eventually caused Peter and Robin Phillips to leave KPM for ATV Music.

The importance of the recording engineer is acknowledged in The Mood Modern, and those who largely shaped the "sound" of the KPM and Bruton libraries are featured: Ted Fletcher, Adrian Kerridge, Mike Clements, Richard Elen (KPM) and Chris Dibble (Bruton Music). There's detailed coverage of all the KPM 1000 Series' overseas sessions - including personnel, dates, locations and what was recorded - and chapters respectively devoted to the sessions in Bickendorf, Cologne (along with the stellar lineup of international jazz talent that played on them) and in KPM's two in- house studios. The Musicians' Union embargo, which had forced British libraries to record much of their material on the Continent, is also scrutinised, as are the negotiations with the MU of the late '70s that finally allowed British libraries to resume recording in British studios with British musicians.

Limited hand-numbered paperback book
Notes: "The Book of Numbers and Spells is multi-hatted composer and inventor Charlie Morrow's first book. Number and letter games bejewel the pages of this anthology (pulling pieces and writings from 1974 to 2019). These works are largely text scores. It wasn't until I saw Charlie perform 'Ten the Long Way' with a room full of participants that the performative power became clear to me. Chanting numbers: the meditative, transparent, and unifying joy that swept across the room was beautiful. Charlie, a born networker of people and ideas, has naturally included two close friends in the book. Jerome Rothenberg provides a poetic essay, 'A Gematria Sampler', along with a compelling article written by composer Tom Johnson. These supplements embolden the scope and richness of Morrow's transparent systems." --Sean McCann, June 2019

Notes: Born in the drive-in theatre backseats of the 1970s, the demonic fun of Teen Movie Hell ignited the 1980s VCR, cable TV, and multiplex booms that burned well into the 1990s. Between George Lucas's American Graffiti (1973) and Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused (1993), lust-driven laff riots on the order of Animal House, Porky's, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and Revenge of the Nerds boomed at the box office and celebrated adolescent misbehaviour run amok.

Author Mike "McBeardo" McPadden (Heavy Metal Movies) passes righteous judgment, one boobs-and-boner opus at a time, plus penetrating insight from Eddie Deezen (Grease, Zapped!), Samm Deighan, Kat Ellinger, Wendy McClure, Katie Rife, Heather Drain, Lisa Carver, Rachel McPadden, Liz Mason, Christina Ward, and Kier-La Janisse.

228 page book with thread-sewn softcover, produced by Shelter Press in association with INA GRM
Notes: This book has been conceived as both a prism and a manual. Following the "traditional" arc of electroacoustic composition (listen-record-compose-deploy-feel), each of the contributions collected together here focuses in on a personal aspect, a fragment of that thrilling territory that is sonic and musical experimentation.

Although the term "experimental music" may now have be understood as referring to a genre, or even a particular style, we ought to hold on to the original use of this term, which was based more on an approach than on any particular aesthetic line to be followed. The experimental is first and foremost a spirit, the spirit of the exploration of unknown territories, a spirit of invention which sees musical composition more as a voyage into uncertain territories than as a self-assured approach working safe within the bosom of fully mapped out and recognized lands.

With texts by:

Pink Floyd: Captured Through Time (hardback book + prints)
Cat: 734105 Rel: 04 Jun 19

Limited hardback book featuring over 100 images of Pink Floyd + 3 photo prints
Notes: Spanning more than half a century Pink Floyd has rightly earned its place as one of the greatest rock bands of all time. From the early, experimental and often whimsical days with band leader Syd Barrett to the more expansive style with Dave Gilmour onboard, leading to the masterpiece Dark Side Of The Moon that elevated Floyd into the stratosphere. But success came at a price as personal relationships suffered, culminating in break-ups as eventually Roger Waters departed. But stadiums and huge arenas continued to welcome Floyd through the eighties and nineties with a brief reunion with Waters for 2005's Live 8 event.

Captured Through Time is a photographic celebration of this truly iconic band that takes you on a journey from the psychedelic, avant-garde sixties to the present day including off stage shots of all band members during the 2000s including Syd Barrett!

Many of the photos have never been published in print before, including a sequence of shots from the Animals tour in 1977 that have only just been developed from the original negatives and digitally restored for this publication.

In total, over 100 glorious images of Floyd both on and off stage through the decades are included in this large format hardback book. Housed in a bespoke, custom-made, buckram presentation box with holographic block foil, it also includes 3 prints, ideal for framing and is strictly limited to 500 worldwide.

An Illustrated History of Hellhammer & Early Celtic Frost 1981-1985
Notes: This formidable oversized hardcover runs 288 pages (including a 32-page colour section), and combines hundreds of unseen early HELLHAMER and CELTIC FROST photos with a vast treasure trove of artwork and memorabilia. A substantial written component by TOM GABRIEL FISCHER (aka TOM G. WARRIOR). Fischer details his upbringing on the outskirts of Zurich, Switzerland, and the hardships and triumphs he faced bringing the visions of his ground-breaking bands Hellhammer and eventually Celtic Frost to reality.

In addition, the book includes an introduction by NOCTURNO CULTO of Norwegian black metal act DARKTHRONE, and a foreword by noted metal author JOEL MCIVER. There is no question that this book goes farther than any other source in exploring the origins of underground heavy metal. The wealth of visual information is astounding, both in terms of documenting early 1980s headbangers and exposing the still-relevant imagery of the first Hellhammer and Celtic Frost photo sessions. On top of that, the written chapters combine Tom Fischer's often shocking stories with lengthy quotes from MARTIN ERIC and the other main Hellhammer members, explaining in intimately human terms how extreme metal was born. Stunning.

Book documenting the New York hardcore scene between 1980-1990
Notes: Known for its glamorous 1970s punk rock scene, New York City matched the grim urban reality of the 1980s with a rawer musical uprising: New York hardcore. As bands of misfits from across the region gravitated to the forgotten frontier of Manhattan's Lower East Side. With a backdrop of despair, bands like Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law, and Youth of Today confronted their reality with relentlessly energetic gigs at CBGB, A7, and the numerous squats in the area.

Tony Rettman's ambitious oral history captures ten years of struggling, including the scene's regional rivalries with D.C. and Boston, the birth of moshing, the clash and coming to terms of hardcore and heavy metal, the straightedge movement, and the unlikely influence of Krishna consciousness.

With a foreword by Freddy Cricien of Madball, who made his stage debut with Agnostic Front at age seven, NYHC slams the sidewalk with savage tales of larger-than-life characters and unlikely feats of willpower. The gripping and sometimes hilarious narrative is woven together like the fabric of New York itself from over 100 original interviews with members of Absolution, Adrenalin O.D., Agnostic Front, Antidote, Bad Brains, Bloodclot, Bold, Born Against, Breakdown, Cause for Alarm, Citizen Arrest, Cro-Mags, Crumbsuckers, Death Before Dishonor, Even Worse, False Prophets, Don Fury, Gorilla Biscuits, H20, Heart Attack, Inhuman, Into Another, Irate, Judge, Kraut, Leeway, Life's Blood, Major Conflict, Max's Kansas City, Murphy's Law, Nausea, Nihilistics, Nuclear Assault, Numskulls, Outburst, Pro-Pain, Quicksand, Rat Cage Records, Raw Deal, Reagan Youth, Rorschach, S.O.D., Sacrilege, Savage Circle, Sheer Terror, Shelter, Shok, Sick of it All, Side by Side, Skinhead Youth, Straight Ahead, the Abused, the Cryptcrashers, the Mad, the Misfits, the Misguided, the Mob, the Psychos, the Ritz, the Stimulators, the Undead, Token Entry, Underdog, Urban Waste, Virus, Warzone, Youth of Today, and many, many more.

Notes: A spectacular large-format 272-page view inside "the metal scene that banged those heads that did not bang" includes over 400 of some of the earliest colour and black-and-white photos of METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, EXODUS, POSSESSED, DEATH ANGEL, LEGACY/TESTAMENT, VIO-LENCE and many others. Journals of Patrick Cowley, with illustrations by Gwenael Rattke
Notes: Mechanical Fantasy Box is Cowley's homoerotic journal, or as he called it, "graphic accounts of one man's sex life." The journal begins in 1974 and ends in 1980 on his 30th birthday. It chronicles his slow rise to fame from lighting technician at The City Disco to crafting a ground-breaking 16-minute remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" to performing with Sylvester at the SF Opera House. Vivid descriptions are told of cruising in '70s SoMA sex venues to primal highs in Buena Vista Park and composing pornophonics in his Castro apartment. The entries are introspective and show a very out-front, alive person going through the throes of gay liberation post-Stonewall.

French-born artist and Berlin resident Gwenael Rattke works in collage, silkscreen, photography and Xerox graphics. Rattke's collage works borrow from the visual codes of the 60s and 70s. Intricate, ornamental and excessive, they present "an imagined past fired with beauty and sexual freedom." For this book Rattke created 25 original illustrations inspired by selected entries, 3 street maps documenting locations mentioned herein and 4 collages of photos, ephemera and notes Patrick stuffed inside the journal. We've included Patrick's doodles too, as well as introductory essays by Josh Cheon, Theresa McGinley and Jorge Socarras.

224 page book with 7" vinyl
Notes: After having borrowed lines from Jimi Hendrix and English poets for all previous anniversary releases we struck out for this one until Kim, well after the deadline, accidentally stumbled over Johnny Cash and "Forever Words: The Unknown Poems". "Let's Put It To Music" quite nails it when it comes to the basic idea of the book and how we approach the whole process of making a record.

As Tim Gane is quotet in Adrian Shaughnessy's introduction "a Stereolab record was never finished until the cover was done". That rings true for Rune Grammofon as well, and we would like to add that a sleeve is never designed for the sole purpose of selling a product (it took 28 releases before an artist was pictured on the sleeve!), or necessarily reflect the music in any way (is that even possible?), but rather to establish a suggestive relation between the two, often based on the album title or a song title, but not in an obvious way.
After some 200 releases, I can't remember Kim ever "explaining" a sleeve design, and I can't remember me ever asking him. It's no secret that label founder Rune Kristoffersen is a big admirer of labels like Blue Note, Impulse, ECM, 4AD and Factory, to mention some labels with strong visual identities. But we can't recall another label that has worked with one designer exclusively for 20 years and 200 releases.

The exclusivity was a premise for our collaboration from the very beginning, but we certainly never had any expectations about how long we would be able to keep it going. Especially when considering that Kim is occupied on a number of arenas; as photographer, filmmaker, illustrator, painter, writer, musician, dancer and choreographer.
As one will discover, the book is far from being a catalog lining up the releases (it's not even "complete" or chronological in that sense), but gives an interesting insight by also including sketches, rejected designs and unused ideas that never left the drawing board... until now. Lists are a source of controversy, as Hedvig Mollestad discusses rather well in her text.

We haven't had much time for them either, but with the resurgence of music literature on all sort of subjects, they seem to have come alive again. And with the eclectic mix of artists on the label, why not give it a try? We figure the main funcion of lists is to arouse curiosity and hopefully lead to new cultural discoveries, which can only be a good thing. The idea of including a 7" single also came late and would depend on getting at last one track real quickly. To our delight, we miraculously ended up with what is surely three of the most beautiful tracks in our catalog, and all exclusive for this release.

Tracklist:

Side A:
1. Fire! Orchestra - Enter, Part One (With & Without Fire!)

Side B:
1. Maja SK Ratkje - Sja, Amioda
2. The Last Hurrah!! With Nora Zheng - Blues In Chinatown

The history of 'bleep & bass' - 324-page paperback book by Matt Anniss
Notes: The previously untold story of British dance music's first sub-bass revolution, tracing the origins, development, impact and influence of bleep techno, and the subsequent musical styles it inspired, on UK club culture.

Since the dawn of the 1990s, British dance music has been in thrall to the seductive power of weighty sub-bass. It is a key ingredient in a string of British-pioneered genres, including hardcore, jungle, drum & bass, dubstep, UK garage and grime.

In the Join The Future book, dance music journalist Matt Anniss (Resident Advisor, DJ Magazine, Red Bull Music Academy) traces the roots, origins, development and legacy of the sound that started it all: the first distinctively British form of electronic dance music, bleep techno.

A mixture of social, cultural, musical and oral history, Join The Future reveals the untold stories of bleep's Yorkshire pioneers and those that came in their wake, moving from electro all-dayers and dub soundsystem clashes of the mid-1980s to the birth of hardcore and jungle in London and the South East.

Along the way, you'll find first-hand accounts of key clubs and raves, biographies of forgotten and overlooked production pioneers, stories of bleep outposts in Canada and the United States, and the inside story of the early years of one of electronic music's most iconic labels, Warp Records.

Based on five years of research and hundreds of hours of new interviews, the book is a radical alternative history of the rise of British dance music during the late 80s and early 90s.

About the author:

Matt Anniss is a journalist and author specializing in electronic music, DJing and club culture. He began his career on internet magazines in the late 1990s before joining the staff of IDJ Magazine as Music Editor in 2000, later becoming Editor. Since leaving the magazine in 2008 he's become a regular contributor to Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy Daily and DJ Magazine, specializing in historical aspects of dance music culture.

As an author, Matt Anniss has written over 50 non-fiction books for children and young adults, including a number of "how-to" books on DJing, podcasting and music production. In 2017 he co-authored The Vinyl Owners Manual (with Patrick Fuller) for iconic British brand Haynes Publishing, which became one of the brand's best-selling titles of 2018. He is an obsessive record collector and mix maker. He lives in Bristol, England.

209 page paperback book containing photography & interviews by Bob Bert
Notes: Hozac Books is proud to present our third art book, I'm Just The Drummer: the Bob Bert artist compendium of photography and interviews, establishing his irreplaceable link between the 1970s No Wave movement and contemporary noise rock. Although Bert's immediate work is best known drumming in his wide array of musical projects he's been involved with (such as SONIC YOUTH, PUSSY GALORE, CHROME CRANKS, LYDIA LUNCH, and many more) since the early 1980s, the focus of his book isn't drum-centric as it is an encapsulation of the artistic world he's developed within. It's not a drumming instructional guide, or a critical assessment of how the drummers in bands are treated, but a 200+ page guide through Bob's musically adventurous life, and what a ride! Starting out with his teenage love of photography and his process of capturing the underground downtown figureheads as well as the emerging unknown No Wave bands, Bob was just as much of an enthusiastic fan of music as he was a fixture in some of the most crucial music of the 1980s, 90s, and beyond. And that's what's really important in the long run, as his excitement for music bursts from each page, providing the springboard to his long-running life in bands on the fringe of the mainstream.

But Bob Bert wasn't just that figure of intersectional commonality of SEVERAL pivotal bands with an edge over the last 30 years, oh no. He also has (not surprisingly) impeccable taste in music and culture, which could only sprout forth in the 1990s with an inevitable 'zine,' and thus, BB Gun Magazine was born. Spanning from 1995 until 2004, and covering emerging underground music, film, and outre artists sub-underground, as well as Hollywood-level impresarios, I'm Just the Drummer contains a wealth of interview excerpts from the elusive original magazines, along with his photography accompaniment.

Notes: Singer, songwriter, supermodel, record producer, actress and iconoclast: Grace Jones. One can only imagine how that reads on a business card. She was the phenomenon the world needed - equal parts intriguing, intimidating and indefatigable.

This book beautifully illustrates her life, her art, creative collaborations, films, friendships and fun - all in a brilliantly illustrated A to Z format.

216 page paperback book
Notes: The first chronicle of A Tribe Called Quest - the visionary, award-winning group whose jazz-infused records and socially conscious lyrics revolutionized rap in the early 1990s.

Hanif Abdurraqib is a visiting writer in the MFA program at Butler University, an acclaimed poet, and cultural critic whose work has appeared in the New York Times, MTV News, Vulture, and other outlets. A nominee for the Pushcart Prize, he is the author of the highly praised poetry collection The Crown Ain't Worth Much and the essay collection They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us.

How does one pay homage to A Tribe Called Quest? The seminal rap group brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces such as The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. Seventeen years after their last album, they resurrected themselves with an intense, socially conscious record, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, which arrived when fans needed it most, in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib digs into the group's history and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself. The result is as ambitious and genre-bending as the rap group itself.

Abdurraqib traces the Tribe's creative career, from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Their work is placed in the context of the broader rap landscape of the 1990s, one upended by sampling laws that forced a reinvention in production methods, the East Coast - West Coast rivalry that threatened to destroy the genre, and some record labels' shift from focusing on groups to individual MCs. Throughout the narrative Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact. Whether he's remembering The Source magazine cover announcing the Tribe's 1998 breakup or writing personal letters to the group after bandmate Phife Dawg's death, Abdurraqib seeks the deeper truths of A Tribe Called Quest; truths that - like the low end, the bass - are not simply heard in the head, but felt in the chest.

Paperback book containing four stories by Allen Ravenstine
Notes: Slim, 44-page perfect bound, paperback containing four stories. Illustrated by Mary Thomas. These four stories were written while Allen was working and touring with the Cleveland band, Pere Ubu, and refer directly to those years. Previously published in The Cleveland Edition, The Re Records Quarterly and The Penguin Book of Rock and Roll Writing. Allen Ravenstine was born in Canton, Ohio in 1950. In 1968 his parents were killed in a car crash. He was a student at Ohio State University when students protesting the Vietnam War were shot at Kent State. All universities in Ohio closed, so he left Columbus, where he was studying English literature, never to return.

In the following years he worked with an EML analogue synthesizer and a Teac four-track tape recorder and in 1974 bought the Plaza, a ramshackle apartment building in Cleveland's inner city, which soon became the home of painters, poets, writers and musicians. In 1975, he co-founded the legendary Cleveland band, Pere Ubu in which he worked until 1988... leaving to become an airline pilot.

Taking up music again in 2012, he appeared with Robert Wheeler in the film 'I Dream of Wires', recorded two album length records, 'Farm Report' and 'City Desk'. In 2014, he released his first solo CD, 'The Pharaoh's Bee'. The critically acclaimed 'Waiting for the Bomb' followed in 2018. Allen lives in New York City with his wife Ann.

Dead Moon were a DIY band, active for 19 years. Singer and guitarist Fred Cole was playing music since the early 1960's - beginning his career as "Deep Soul Cole - the white Stevie Wonder", then joining the psychedelic garage rock band the Lollipop Shoppe / The Weeds. In the 70's and early 80's Fred and Toody Cole played in various punk, country and hard rock bands. In the late 1980's, they formed Dead Moon with Andrew Loomis. This band went on to become mythic and legendary. They lived by a DIY code built around superstitions and avoidance of conventional music industry pitfalls. Their story is completely unique amongst the pantheon on rock bands - a group who never sold out, never gave in and built a legacy of art and community piece by piece in a sustainable way almost unheard of. The book is a tribute to their unique aesthetic, unbelievable twisted path of a story, and roll as pioneers of the Portland music scene.

The book tells the entire Dead Moon saga in the words of the band itself. Just the voices of Fred, Toody and Andrew. It includes a complete illustrated discography of everything Fred, Toody and Andrew have released, song lyrics, and TONS of band photos, flyers, and weird ephemeral stuff. Lots of it has never been seen by the greater public. The package also includes 2 LP's of the "best of" Dead Moon - lovingly remastered from the original tapes. Very sturdy construction.

420-page biography of Bob Marley by acclaimed music writer Chirs Salewicz
Notes: What was it about Bob Marley that made him so popular in a world dominated by rock'n'roll?

How is that he has not only remained the single most successful reggae artist ever, but has also become a shining beacon of radicalism and peace to generation after generation of fans across the globe?

On May 11, 1981, a little after 11.30 in the morning, Bob Marley died. The man who introduced reggae to a worldwide audience, in his own lifetime he had already become a hero figure in the classic mythological sense. From immensely humble beginnings and with talent and religious belief his only weapons, the Jamaican recording artist applied himself with unstinting perseverance to spreading his prophetic musical message.

And he had achieved it: only a year earlier, Bob Marley and The Wailers' tour of Europe had seen them perform to the largest audiences a musical act had up to that point experienced. Record sales of Marley's albums before his death were spectacular; in the years since his death they have become phenomenal, as each new generation discovers afresh the remarkable power of his music.

Chris Salewicz, who had a sequence of adventures with Bob Marley in Jamaica in 1979, offers us a comprehensive and detailed account of Bob Marley's life and the world in which he grew up and came to dominate. Never-before-heard interviews with dozens of people who knew Marley are woven through a narrative that brings to life not only the Rastafari religion and the musical scene in Jamaica, but also the spirit of the man himself.
