Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electro funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Review: 1985 Music take their Various Artists' collections very seriously and Atlas 2 is their latest top-drawer offering. Across no fewer than six sides of vinyl - served up in an embossed sleeve - the label platforms a wide range of artists, some of them red hot newcomers, some of the deserving and still relevant veterans as well as plenty in between. From the alluring darkness of Alix Perez & Ebb's minimal 'Shallow Affect' to Trail's haunting 'Velasquez' and Scout's ice-cold 'Meltdown' then is s superb cross-section of the best in stylish and heady drum & bass.

Review: Visages are a four-strong crew out of Toulouse who fly the flag for a true-school, soundsystem approach to club music. Their drops to date have spanned labels like Flexor Audio, Impact Music and Dispatch Recordings, but since 2020 they've been building something formidable with Alix Perez's 1985 Music label. Now this build up culminates in the knockout From Lead To Gold, a masterful long player of hard-hitting steppers and snaking d&b workouts which will have seasoned heads and new listeners alike getting giddy. Perez himself lends a hand on 'Black Katana' but really the achievement is all in the hands of these four talented up and comers.

Review: London-based producer Otik releases his first album Cosmosis on Martyn's label 3024. The 11-track LP signifies the fourth album on the imprint across its ten-year tenure, showcasing a more introspective side to Otik's musical output. The album leans into delicate melodies, hazy atmospheres and lush analogue sounds, often evoking blissed-out feels and ripples of brilliant colour. Produced three years ago during lockdown, Cosmosis comes after a period of spiritual struggles, where Otik questioned his faith, religious beliefs, and the concepts of right and wrong. While the pandemic allowed ample time for reflection, Otik translated these thoughts into music from his Peckham-based studio, later finding a home on 3024's evolving discography. Keen to release a body of work that explores the journey of enlightenment and the struggles to get there, Otik drew inspiration from the luminary filmmaker Terrence Malick and how Malick portrayed ideas and philosophies in films like The Tree of Life and Voyage of Time. As a result, the record conveys a compelling narrative of rebirth, told through exquisite sound design and a push-pull pace that oscillates across the album.

Cloud Busting (6:49)
Octopus (6:22)
Review: Dutch jungle connoisseur Coco Brice has mastered just about every style and sub style over the years. He has a meticulous sound that makes every sound pristine and fully deserving of its place in the mix. The a-side on his new one for 3am Eternal is a mix of brutal, physical drum work and heavenly melody that tugs you in two directions at once on 'Cloud Busting.' It's epic, meaningful and unmissable. On the reverse, thongs are a little more stripped back and a more rolling break tumbles endlessly towards. More lush keys and melodies light it up, with plenty of deft effects and a spine tingling breakdown taking you into the next dimension.

Review: Coco Bryce deserves any and all of the plaudits that continually come his way. The Dutchman is a drum & bass mainstay with a distinctive sound that is rooted very much in the future. It's 3am Eternal where he lands to kick off his 20204 and as always he comes through with plenty of irresistible goods. 'One Hundred' nods to the old school with its nimble piano vamps darting about the mix over captivating amen breaks. 'Saliva' is a more deep, zoned-out sound that gets your mind lost amongst the stars thanks to its interplanetary synth work.

Review: Sindh combines old and new worlds on his latest mystic hymns, this time kicking off the A-Biotic label with his dark and alluring four-track EP 'Andaman'. He manages to fuse organic and synthetic materials here as he heads down a darkly introspective path where minimal and IDM, dub and techno all collide in mutant form. 'Jangil' is a real standout with its bubbling halftime rhythms and icy synths backed by distant angelic chorals. The bewitching sounds continue on 'Galathea' which rides back and forth on its heels as subtle sines, scurrying synths and menacing pads all interlock before 'Hinam' locks you in a dense synth stasis and loopy sense of lurching rhythm.

Bookworm (Mysmiakos remix) (5:44)
Review: 90s jungle and atmospheric drum & bass is lent an excitable, experimental edge by Finnish upstart ODJ Pirkka. This EP is about as radical as orthodox jungle can get, pushing the sound into ever-reaching corners of jump-up or even UK hardcore. 'OMG' is a samply, weird, choral breaks-masher, mixing in everything from dog woofing sounds to lasershots and reese womps between its rapidly fidgeting breaks variations. 'Bookworm', meanwhile, leans into more casual G-funk-whistly directions, resting on a more atmospheric waterbed, around which endless bubbles are heard popping, and reversed vocal samples mark transitions like passing mermaids. Wild!

Review: Good For You Records labelled Kenny Summit is back on his own label. The veteran of 30 plus years is in fine form with this single, which is a feel good and super soulful house track for warmer days. A muffled, muted vocal brings a tinge of melancholy, but the funky bass riffs and disco-fried drums raise you up. It comes with some beefy remixes, not least from the late, great Chicago veteran Paul Johnson whose Jack Nation remix is hard edged and raw. DJ Spinna does his soulful thing on a fine remix and DJ Aphrodite take stings into d&b territory to close.

Review: Building on more than 20 years in the game, recent times have seen London-based junglist Opius exploring album formats and deeper strains within d&b and jungle on labels like Silent Force, Time Tunnel and his own Ballpark. Now he arrives on AGN7 Audio with a blistering exercise in experimental d&b that takes a broader look at what a breakbeat can be. The emphasis here is on jazz, as blasts of post bop drumming get sliced and diced into head-rushing constructions that feel as fresh as the first time you heard someone getting busy with an amen.

The Cruel Sea (5:00)
Review: Now for something completely different! Forever ahead of the game, Hidden Agenda's role in leftfield jungle soul has been undeniable and hugely influential since the mid-90s and it's amazing to see Jason back now and on such a maverick edge. Both of these cuts hit with a unique vibe and flavour that's so refreshing to hear. 'Dust' is a psychedelic wonderland that slides along with shimmering layers of percussion, guitar and keys. 'Cruel Sea' takes things a little darker as an edgy, unpredictable drive takes the lead. Think Krust's recent work on Crosstown Rebels and you're on the right planet. AKO Beatz never miss a punch.

Originally released in 2019, here we find the drums super zooped up with a few twists to the bassline and energy. Flip for the aptly titled 'Pain'. Review: Curing what ails you, Dokta Venom slaps down a full prescription pad at AKO HQ with four marvellous medicines. Following the heavyweight 'Dreadnox' on 'AKOizm Vol 4' last year, each of these tracks reveals a different side to this brutalist quack; 'Sound Lord' is pure 3am slammage, all bulldozer breaks and such, 'Eden's Rise' is a breezy pad-heavy goosebump bonanza while the title track 'The Artistic Truth' flips things with much more of a jazzy, abstract twist. Finally 'Speed Jazz' finishes the dosage on a mellow cosmic soul touch. Get well soon.

It's all arranged in an ever evolving fashion that keeps you on your toes from the floaty vibes of 'Chaz Lemon' to the more bristling breaks of 'Lerryunder'. Hot on the heels of his Metalheadz release, Kenzo keeps things d&b with both of these raffish, rugged cuts. 'RawZ' bashes and bumps in all the right places, aided by shimmering percussion and a sweet vocal stab placed at all the right moments. It's backed up by the sultry, sexy 'Typhoon' that flexes on a halftime groove for most of the track and features a smouldering vocal you'll instantly recognise. Stunning.

This latest volume brings you more of those ruff 'n' tuff crossovers between early hardcore, jungle techno and more besides, beefed up to swing it with the best of them in the modern era. This is an authentic and turbocharged offering that drops in the middle of a sweaty, strobe lit dance floor as the dopamine floods your brain. 'Higher' is lit up by a sample of the Happy Mondays tune of the same name and 'Demolition' layers up hellish stabs with taught bass rumbles and acid flashes. Hot on the heels of recent cuts on the likes of 'I Am Sorry' (on Ruff Cutz) and 'Zion Bound' (with Dial M on Sweet Sensi) 'Recovery' is a big sweeping emotional cut that could easily be compared to any classic Infrared release while 'I Survived' focuses a little more on the breaks before flipping into a beautiful cosmic odyssey. 'Document' plays good cop/bad cop as the cosmic pads and arpeggios and classic vocal sample give you a warm hug while the drums come in hard with all kinds of accusations. 'Guidelines' follows with a similar strong sense of contrasts but more of an old school foundation hardcore type of feel; non-stop drummage and a universe of synth flurries overhead. Sublime.

Coming to fellow self-appointed breaks scholars Amenology, the four tracks on this EP are as functional as they are rambunctious, spanning multiple moods and eras. 'Skin Out' in particular has a sort of early jump-up vibe, with a Demons-Thematic smattering of sound effects peppered with an overarching blue-noted jazz texture.

On 'Electrical Synpases' he more than proves himself up to the task, creating a monster of a track which will send limbs flailing as soon as the drop hits. Review: Peaking once again; Vinyl Fanatiks off-shoot AmenTec (which is a collaboration between Amen Brother and Emotec) welcome old-but-new artist Ova Doce for his debut label EP. The result is a wide-armed homage to all forms of breakbeat and hardcore in the form of two originals and two remixes. 'I Feel Your Touch' is one of those end-of-night slo-mo dreamy breakbeat jams, all poignant and emotional (think Hybrid's early work but much grittier) while 'Love Me Once' goes straight for the Vamp-ish 2am hardcore feel. Meanwhile in remix country, DAWL flexes some tightly coiled electro charm while Escape Earth whips up the d&b. Easy Doce it.

This deft four-tracker is a study in the mix of light and dark, heavy and airy. 'Enclosed' manages to float on suspensory synths while the busy drums flap below next to splashy hits. 'Kind Of Sort Of Not Really' pairs pensive, inwardly reflective synths with busier drum workouts and 'Nots' heads into jungle territory but with bass so nimble you can't sit still. Closer 'Pox' might be the best of the lot with its moody bass and chords and kinetic, pinging drums.

Review: Heads will know 'As We Enter' as the name of the Breakage tune that set the stage for many more things halftime to come - not to mention a Damian Marley & Nas song released around the same time - so we're more than pleased to learn that one next-gen producer has taken on the name as an alias. However, something in the aura of this release tells us this artist is no debutante; 'Lover To Lover' brings wubbing Reesebound rollage and summery fluting funk together in quick step, with complementary numbers 'So Gone', 'Come Again' and 'Shifting Gears' flaunting a respect for the many different facets of drum & bass, from techstep to early jump-up. This one gets more and more sinister as it progresses; despite the cover, whatever's entered the room feels more elephant than pigeon.

Adrenaline (feat OLIVIA) (3:58)
Review: Rudimental's third full-length, "Toast To Our Differences", was originally slated for release back in September, but ended up being delayed. So was it worth the wait? It's certainly a colourful, vibrant and expansive affair, with the quartet drawing on a far wider palette of influences than were evident on their previous albums. Check, for example, the title track's glistening, South African style tropical pop, the piano-powered cheeriness of "These Days", the soaring power pop of previous single "Sun Comes Up" and the auto-tune heavy EDM-house stomp of "Scared of Love". Given their superstar status, it's unsurprising to see an impressive cast list of guests and collaborators - Major Lazer, Rita Ora and Ladysmith Black Mambazo included - while this "Deluxe Edition" includes a trio of extra tracks.

Spider (Optiv & BTK remix) (6:23)
Review: Bad Taste's Bad Company have got an absolute wealth of stone-cold killer cuts in their arsenal and this next remix package is no different. It kicks off with a lush remix by Insideinfo of 'Torpedo' which has a bouncy, fleshy groove with garage-style snares up top and a nagging soul vocal that tugs at the heart. On the flipside is 'Spider' (Optiv & BTK remix), which is a totally different proposition - the bass is dark, the breaks come hard and fast and the mix work adds menace to an already monstrous peak time banger.

You should know the vibe by now; brazen breakbeat choppage and high energy rave flavours across the spectrum. Highlights here include the walloping emotion of 'Whale Song' and pure venom of 'Archetypical'. Savage.

Now the shadowy producer has manifested on Banoffee Pies' White Label series with further switched-on excursions into inventive breakbeat chops and mysterious atmospheres. From the smoky drumfunk of 'Deation' to the melancholy, flute-licked haze of 'Gad Damn', this is a sterling exercise in inventive d&b from an artist pushing modern iterations of the sound into intriguing new pastures while holding true to the tenets of the genre.

Review: Straight off the back of Nicolo's deep, dubby broken beat escapade, Baroque Sunburst strike again with two beguiling breakbeat originals from rising Milan-based Brazilian talent Worli. 'Dynamo' is a purring, rolling tribal breaks piece with strong undertones of techno that you could imagine anyone playing from Villalobos to Meat Katie. 'Breathe - Dance' meanwhile takes a more glacial, up-tempo twist as a foggy, steppy slab of drum & bass that's reminiscent of a Metalheadz B-side or something you'd find on Samurai. Complete with a nutty junglistic remix from Etch and you're packing serious heat. .

Review: Brand new label for your radar, French platform BasSskin Records come correct with this powerful double-A from pioneering Belgian duo The Untouchables and the visionary DJ Draai. The former roll out with a super slinky and tense slab of percussive pressure while the latter takes things on more of a spiritual tip, applying bags of space in the mix and mystic eastern instruments. Cosmic without the cliches, this is the type of bass music you could never have too much of a skinful of.

Review: It's the anthem that just won't quit. Having celebrated a decade of Gold Dust with a whole stack of remixes earlier this year - even though the tune is actually closer to 12 or 13 years old - the Bad Company founder-turned-popstar DJ Fresh now serves up this special gold vinyl edition for Record Store Day. Complete with the VIP and instrumental (which are still arguably the best versions out there) it's yet another way you can get blasted with one of the most iconic and euphoric hooks in modern drum & bass. You can't get enough of this style.

Hardcore Blips (Fanu remix) (5:22)
Review: Malaga-based producer Pablo Dread comes to Beat Machine Records for the eleventh edition of the special series Swinging Flavors, this time for the titular 'Hardcore Blips'. It's a limited edition 7" vinyl featuring swanging bassline kicks, shaking us to our core. This is a full-throttle journey hurtling towards uncontrollable euphoria with electrifying vibrations that magnetically pull us into a one-way ticket to ecstasy. The track's old-school rave sound, a hallmark of Dread's productions, immerses us ambiances typical of the 90s, with recurring piano chords that give way to a heavy and strict drum & bass drop. The single features a special remix by Fanu (Janne Hatula), known for his dynamic and evolving rhythms. Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Fanu takes a departure from his usual thick chord-driven pieces, opting for a more minimal yet delightfully busy and slightly wonky approach. Drawing inspiration from Luke Vibert, this remix adds a playful and unique twist to the track.

Review: Previously spotted linking up on Blueskin Badger for their 'Rising' EP last year, northern junglists Duburban and Jahganaut return to the scene of the crime with two more foundation fire-ups. Both nodding at that classic emotional early 90s palette of shades and emotions with wry snippets of vocals and heavy breakbeat craftsmanship, 'If You Want My Love' is all about those meat cleaver edits thundering down and narrowly missing your neck while 'Why Must It Be This Way' is more about that subtle 4x4 rolling beneath the breaks and those epic chops and switches. Show some love.

Review: DJ Fresh is a legend at this point. Whenever he drops new heat it is worth tuning in, especially when it's a 12" picture disc like this from Breakbeat Koas. The A-side is a collab with Buunshin. 'Dancing In the Dark' is a hardcore gem with pitched-up vocals and monstrous breaks over spin backs, raw bass and thrilling synth lacerations. Response & Pliskin - "Hate Is Reality" (5:40)
Review: Contemporary drum & bass bringers Response & Pliskin take a break from their pressurised plus-170 numbers for a dreamy foray into atmospheric breaks and liquid jungle. 'Live Ur Life' is a varied EP, beginning with the opening new age breaks of the title track, upon which we're geysered on high over humid rainforests of sound, while an ascendant vocalist - capable of wingless flight and incorporeality at will - accompanies us on our aloe vera-doused journey. Once we approach our quest's mythical, live-giving source, we're met with 'Virtuous' and 'Over The Hill', two raw yet revelatory Pandora's boxes uncovered somewhere deep in the heart of said jungle, and which both channel a dialectically calming yet ominous sound. Closer 'Hate Is Reality' refuses to deny hate as a fundamental composite of our lives, healthily channelling this extreme affect into a measured but heavy amen riffer.

Review: Two fresh names make a big splash in the still-strong UK hardcore scene. Coming to DJ Seduction's Burning Bush Communciations for an unlikely Florence And The Machine remix, we hear a breaks-backed version of 'You Got The Love' by DJ-X-Cess, but with re-recorded vocals that sound more to have been lifted from a passionate soul B-side than directly from the indie pop darling. It works very well, admittedly. Then also comes a remix of Ghost Unit's 'Air Cooled' by DJ X Cess, who adds to the original a wally, impossible-not-to-dance-to piano mix.

It's as if this were a G20 summit for some of the genre's most eminent lords, as we hear Goldie, Jubei, Submotive and Lenzman all team up for a four-way rampage. Both tunes on this lethal weapon, through well-placed Reeses and complex metallic snare rebounds, convey the mood of utter dark fantasy. The mood is that of being graced by the presence of monstrously regal higher sonic powers.

Review: Jungle revivalists Coco Bryce and Tommy The Cat are old pals who've released numerous joint EPs over the years. Here they inaugurate a new series of split twelves - snappily titled 'CocoCat' - on Tommy The Cat's own Cat in the Bag label. Bryce handles side A, delivering the nostalgic jungle-techno thrills of 'You Care Before They Do'. It's a pleasingly energetic affair in which bleep techno style melodic motifs - think LFO, Sweet Exorcist etc - and shimmering futurist chords rise above a sweat-soaked jungle break and weighty bass. Over on the flip, Tommy The Cat doffs a cap to the early days of deep, jazzy d&b, successfully cloaking a punchy, Amen-driven beat and heady bassline in the dreamiest of chords.

This latest transmission - another one in the Park Sessions series is pure cat nip right from the off. MsDos takes care of the a-side with 'Belfry', a lively but silky rhythm with bleeping cosmic synths and smeared solar winds while 'Visions' is both deeper and more physical with its melancholic chords.
