Review: A charged, limber ode to Britain's 90s outdoor free party stomping grounds, with which a young Low End Activist was all too familiar. Over nine evocatively named tracks, he fractures and reassembles early 90s hardcore shards (shardcore?) into wabi sabi sonic sculptures somewhat resembling similar rave reconstitutions from Skrs and Fracture. These feel more to the point than both though, foregoing free sample-bashing in favour of driving, sparse, repetitive hoover collage landing firmly within the hardcore continuum but still managing to sidestep cloying nostalgia. 'Ardkore nouveau posse assemble!

Pillow Talk
Review: Highly exciting, futuristic trip hop by Helsinki's Trickpony (Maria Korkella). With her EP 'Pillow Talk', she nails an always difficult-to-capture aesthetic, lying somewhere between the glassy future-metropolitan sonic parkour of Mirror's Edge, and the driving whispers and zoneout beats of Bowery Electric, adding yet another ingenious addition to the unparalleled label that is Roza Terenzi's Step Ball Chain. Opener 'Room To Breathe' revels in stretched-out breaks and blithe half-whispered vocals - which vaguely talk of an adversary being unable to stop Trickpony from going with the flow - while the synaptic dirges of 'Shiver' and its 'On Ice' dub version recall an ideaspatial collusion of Tipper and Skanna, seguing seamlessly from IDM downtempiques to drum & bass. Closer 'Pillow Talk' closes on a note of watery montage trance; it's the brightest statement of the bunch; Doss meets Motion Ward.

Turn The Tape EP (coloured vinyl 12")

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Review: Bristolian bangersmith Amoss shares his latest EP 'Turn The Tape' for Flexout Audio, self-describedly shooting for and squarely executing 'that funky sound'. To our ears, this is translates to knocky, well-polished neuro; the titular A-sider takes its namesake from the sample heard throughout - "it ain't over, I just gotta turn the tape over" - getting at that retro suspense of being bound by limitation. The sound here and throughout is atmospheric and back-alleyed, smoke rising from manholes as a gritty, growling anomaly skulks in the dustbin round the corner ('Stay Hungry', 'Way Better'). Closer 'Front Left' reminisces on a sinister existence spent at the system's larboard, where the sound is said to permeate rooms best; this one brings a brittle rollage, shunning histrionics for a neat two-note middle-fingered trance.

Review: Dom & Roland aka Dom Angas is an esteemed figure in drum & bass, and here unleashes his mastery with two devastating tracks for Samurai Music. Side-1 introduces the title track, 'Climax,' a symphony of heavy drums and crystalline melodies. Its cavernous atmosphere is punctuated by a buzzing bassline that reverberates through the listener's core, creating an immersive sonic experience. On Side-2, 'Rebellion' takes the listener on a journey into the depths of dark and heavy soundscapes. With its ominous atmosphere and strong Amen breaks, this track exudes a sense of impending doom. The growling bassline adds to the intensity, creating a formidable presence on the dancefloor. With Climax's blend of melodic beauty and dark intensity, this release affirms their status as legends in the genre, sure to captivate listeners and shake dancefloors to their core.

Review: Presha's Sacrifice: Rituals EP undergoes a transformative journey as a handful of esteemed producers delve into its sonic depths, reshaping each track with their unique perspectives. Dom & Roland's remix of 'Raven' sets a menacing tone with its hard-hitting beats and ominous atmosphere, invoking a sense of impending doom. Forest Drive West takes on 'Anaconda,' infusing it with languid, slow techno vibes that gradually evolve into a spacey light drum n bass pattern with soundscapes, characterized by dark undertones and hypnotic rhythms. Meanwhile, Homemade Weapons brings a nostalgic nod to 90s jungle with their remix of 'Temple,' featuring vocal samples and urban-inspired beats that transport listeners to the gritty streets of the past. Finally, Torn's remix of 'Sacrifice' delves into the depths of growling jungle, immersing listeners in a menacing and dark sonic landscape. With its deep, menacing tones, this remix encapsulates the EP's theme of ritualistic sacrifice. Overall, Sacrifice: Rituals displays the versatility, creativity and power of Jungle a nd Drum & Bass music.

Watch Out (6:57)
Media (7:18)
Review: Originally released in 1994 and now reissued in 2024, confirming the resurgence of interest in the classic jungle sound, 'Watch Out' is a hard-hitting jungle track with a relentless 'Amen' break, while 'Media' offers a more complex and atmospheric soundscape with a deep, broken bassline.. 'Watch Out' immediately grabs attention with its pounding bassline and heavy drums, the tribal percussion adding an exotic flavor, while the heavy Amen break provides the relentless drive that characterises jungle at its best. The track is relentless and hypnotic, perfectly capturing the energy of the early scene. 'Media,' in contrast, is a more experimental tune. The jungle breakbeats are present, but they are more subdued, providing a backdrop for the track's deep bass notes. Together, 'Watch Out' and 'Media' offer a snapshot of the golden era of jungle music. They are essential listening for anyone interested in the genre's roots and its continuing evolution.

Review: Limited edition gold vinyl repress of Leviticus' monumental track, 'Burial', remastered for 2023 and back on its original home Philly Blunt. This release resurrects the original mixes alongside some iconic remixes from the 90s, encapsulating a significant chapter in the jungle movement. A landmark release, not only signifiying a pivotal era in jungle but also marking the inaugural release on Philly Blunt, kicking things off as they were meant to go on. Crafted in Dillinja's home studio under the collaborative genius of Jumpin Jack Frost, in turn operating under the moniker Leviticus, the original mixes appear in full force here - 'Madamoselle' and 'Lovers Rock' - resonating with rare groove and reggae influences that each propel the track to Notting Hill Carnival fixture status, eventually catching the ear of Pete Tong who facilitated a mainstream release on FFRR the following year.

Review: Strap yourselves in for the return of Missile Vintage with a fifth transmission and this one is a track from the boss himself. Missile Records founder Tim Taylor crafted this banger back in 1992 and released it on the legendary FFRR imprint. It soon made its mark on the rave scene of the time and has remained influential to generations of DJs, dancers and producers ever since. Now it comes back to vinyl in original form, as well as next to a huge Foghorn mix from Micky Finn and a more physical and breaks-lead remix from Blade. Review: At this point Okbron is a byword for the best atmospheric d&b coming out these days and while they may have drawn people in with their archival and reissue offerings, they're just as vital for platforming new music. Response & Pliskin represent the best of Manchester's d&b scene, and they've delved into a particularly mellow sound world for this release. 'Soon Forgotten' is a dreamy, subtly haunting roller with a clean, crisp beat and fulsome subs you can just float on, while 'Mainstream' deals in more layered, evolving pad tones and diced up breaks without losing that light, airy feel you want from a proper atmospheric release.

Having celebrated a decade of Gold Dust with a whole stack of remixes earlier this year - even though the tune is actually closer to 12 or 13 years old - the Bad Company founder-turned-popstar DJ Fresh now serves up this special gold vinyl edition for Record Store Day. Review: It was only a matter of time before Andrew Ferguson made his debut on 2 Bad Mice's Over/Shadow; his tenure in the game, his authenticity, his lack of compromise and his timelessness as an artist (both as Outrage and his more 140-oriented alias Nomine) is a perfect fit. Here are two examples; 'Goodbye' says hello with oceanic waves of disarming pads, bellowing subs and spacious breaks while 'In The Dark' brings a little more 1990 unity vibes thanks to the sensual vocal and subtle piano charm. Outrageously good.

The magic is evident the moment those luxury drums swoop and dip on 'Sweet Memories'. More jazz than jungle, there's a cosmic urgency laced throughout that sets the tone for the whole EP. There's space for meditation and cinematic tension, intriguing rhythms and plenty of pressure, which makes for a natural fit on a label like Samurai. Following last year's standout statement of intent, Confront The Serpent, Reeko returns with another formidable four-tracker loaded with psychedelic energy and heavyweight presence which offers a unique slant on this fertile zone of experimentation in the modern club landscape.

Following 'Isometric Projection' and 'Cause & Effect', this EP once again reaches to the heavens for its essence and rolls out with shimmering, emotional charm and more than its fair share of heavy drum punches. The dreamy vocal calls and slamming breaks of 'Solyaris' and the tightly coiled spring groove of 'Oblivion' are both major highs on this trip.

Experience (6:16)
Elders (5:27)
Review: UK producer Kloke has been on prolific form lately, dropping the science on Tim Reaper's Future Retro, Unknown To The Unknown, Fresh 86 and scores more labels besides. Now he's stepping up to Samurai sub label Mindgames in the wake of essential drops from Reaper and Eusebeia with some incredibly accomplished workouts which reach beyond formulaic limitations to offer the kind of bar-raising breaks juggling and considered production that truly stands out in this day and age. 'Eternity' is as compelling in its teasing, quasi-ambient lead in, taking some of the backroom surrealism of Photek's Modus Operandi and charging it with a vivid, underwater sound design flair. That's just one example - every track has its own distinctive intrigue and mind-bending ideas flying out of the speakers in high-definition.

Review: Bcee hits album number four and we have many people to thank for... The result of a crowd-funding mission (in order to save label funds for his artists), this was made under more pressure and motivation than any of his previous LPs put together. And you can really feel this energy and focus from the opening salvo of vocal soul cuts "Surfacing" and "Little Bird". Much deeper into the document we dive for the densely textured jazz flurries of "Had It All" (with Logistics), soulful song strength of the Riya-fronted title track and much darker sounds such as the knee-sweeping "Dead Reckoning" and the piano-slapping jungle homage "Keep Moving On". And these are just a small handful of highlights. Bcee has yet to deliver a bad album but this takes his repertoire, energy and sense of focus to a whole new level.

Not only a prolific producer, he's also got a razor sharp flair which edges him in front of a crowded scene, and now he's back to Vivid to show us exactly what he's about with a 12-track double-pack, his biggest release to date. In one sense you should know exactly what to expect - elevated steppers and deft rollers, but the fundamental appeal of Yosh is all those ear-snagging traits which make his tracks sparkle, and you never know what they're going to be until the needle's tracking in that groove. Now you can enjoy that sensation 12 times over - a good deal if ever we saw one.

Uniquely combining the quite far-flung-from-each-other genres of footwork, jungle and deep house; this is an unusual EP that draws on everything from the scratchiest oldskool rave tropes to more modern dance approaches. Here, the original song's bassline is swapped out for a slow droning reese, while Colin Hay's acapella retains the rawness of the original recording made in 1980 - despite this actually being a re-record for Luude gifted by Hay himself. Review: Prolific, prodigious jungle explorer Seb Uncles arrives on Rupture LDN in a logical meeting one minds which shows how much there is to be excited about in d&b right now. 'Optimyst' is a sparkling cut which shows off the Eusebeia sound in all its glory. The push and pull between aggression and delicacy is masterfully handled, as Uncles' insanely detailed production hooks you in and feeds body and mind in equal measure. The airy pads behind 'Restoration' set a dreamier tone for the track, but there's plenty of force on display up front. 'Shadow Work' is a nimble affair with pronounced synth hooks, while 'Darkest Before The Dawn' focuses on the cinematic mood which so often creeps into the Eusebeia sound, albeit marked out by yet more staggering displays of jungle science.

Review: One of the UK's wonder-children of music production, Eusebeia, returns for a cerebral new drum & bass EP, 'Snakes & Ladders', homing in on vibes of barren atmosses and desert drumfunk. Opener 'Snakes & Ladders' is Sub-Saharan enough, opening with a bullhorned call to arms over a figurative, dust-laden sonic dune, all while a rallying 808 booms underneath like the distant underground squirms of a sandworm. Things then take an unexpected turn, however, as the producer takes brooding refuge in a nighttime cave on 'Morality Lessons', cleverly traversing an odd time signature and a nocturnal texture. 'Ladder To Salvation' embraces the desert dawn, relishing the misty morning, while 'Vice & Virtue' rounds off the B-side with an impeccable ambience and movement through several competing kettle-breaks and versions of the same atmosphere.

Review: Sometimes it all just gets too much, and we need to take a Break From Reality. Or so the most recent album from DJ Trax suggested - albeit its sound evoked a skew towards the murkier, more nervous and dubious aspects of psychic burnout. The atmospheric drum & bass brilliant's eponymous album was released in 2023 and plunged the abyssal depths of the inner cosmos, in so doing playing up the straighter grooves gleanable from jungle. These three new ones, however, surface from the depths somewhat, adding a new original ('Point To Prove') and two remixes from Ricky Force and Nookie & Binary State to the addendum. All tracks make for an impressively glassy, risen-and-fallen coda; by the end, we've completed a round-trip back to the depths.

And that is the extended mix of Luude & Bru C's 'TMO (Turn Me On)' (feat Kevin Lyttle) which is a big drum & bass anthem with ragga vocals, unrelenting and steel plated drum funk and naughty bass. A slightly more sweet and soulful Borai & Denham Audio remix also features as do Luude & Mattafix's anthem and festival friendly jungle anthem 'Big City Life' and similarly epic and accessible 'Oh My' with Issey Cross and some blissed out keys from one of Moby's classics.

'VSN 122' comes with all the rushy euphoria of the best pop-adjacent, accessible dance music records, but maintains its edge with shards of unorthodox sound design and texture- take the wild bowed cymbal-sounding wubs in 'Novaform' or the unhinged FM action and distant vocal hollering on 'Luminae' for instance. Review: The continued exploration of Marlon Hart's jungle legacy continues apace as Mekatune carries this essential blast from the past. The M-Beat tracks carry that electricity which comes from the breakthrough breakbeat hardcore days, when the ideas took precedence over studio engineering and anything seemed possible. The samples ping around the pitch range, the beats clatter and tumble, and it all sounds absolutely proper. Whether it's the chirpy chipmunk vocal vibes of 'Forever' or the chopped up ragga and mammoth subs of 'Style', this is some of the best gear to come out of that seminal era and the pure swagger of the tracks just can't be replicated in the modern era.

Review: It's been a big year for Hospital. Shucks, every year is a big year for London Elektricity's imprint, but 2014 seems especially big with huge albums from the likes of Fred V & Grafix, S.P.Y and now Metrik. Repping his game, the label and the genre at the highest level, Universal Language is a highly accomplished calling card for Metrik that showcases his ability to create barn-storming rave homages ("Make The Floor Burn"), arena-slapping sing-along lighter-raisers ("Human Again", "Infinity"), techy underground rollers ("Slipstream") and unifying cuts that give the legendary Underworld a run for their money ("Resonate"). Maintaining a fine balance of great songwriting, muscular production and straight-up dancefloor abandon, this speaks to every corner, every sub genre and every tiny pocket of D&B. Just as the title suggests.

Review: Phonica Records toasts 20 years in style with this three-disc exploration of the house and techno they're best known for. It's no surprise they were able to pull in a heavyweight cast of characters for this collection, but they've made sure to leave enough room for the stars of tomorrow, too. Familiar names include Daniel Bell, Shy One, Willow, Peggy Gou, Midland, Will Saul and Ron Basejam, but there's also surprise inclusions like Tim Reaper and Comfort Zone teaming up for a signature jungle excursion. This is a heavyweight reflection of everything Phonica has represented for the past two decades, but equally a sign towards where they're heading in the future and it couldn't sound rosier.

Review: We're back in that electrifying breakthrough breakbeat period courtesy of Amen Brother to revisit the sound of the mighty DJ Pooch. This latest volume brings you more of those ruff 'n' tuff crossovers between early hardcore, jungle techno and more besides, beefed up to swing it with the best of them in the modern era. You might well recognise one or two of the samples flying around in 'Mind, Body & Soul (Remix)', while 'Rush On Me' has its own iconic hooks alongside some deadly, skull-crushing breakbeat pressure. 'I Need U' is a vintage, bleepy workout of the highest calibre and 'Hypnotising' finishes the record off in chilling old-skool style. Essential gear for rave veterans and revivalists alike.

Review: Further evidence of the thriving relationship between techno and drum & bass can be found right here as Spanish industrialist Reeko ups the tempo for this stunning conceptual EP for Samurai. Inspired by the process, tradition and culture of ayahuasca ceremonies, over four tracks we're taken on a deeply hypnotic trip where the percussion and militant rhythm echo Reeko's more typical work (notably on his label Mental Disorder) but weave and twist with a different, almost psychedelic edge. It's a classic vibe for Samurai but very contemporary one for Reeko. Let's hope we get to experience more of this.

Review: Space jungle extraordinaire ASC is as prolific as they come, and this week he's back again with 'Sphere Of Influence', a synth-heavy present-day take on the dreamy origins of his chosen sound. Beginning with 'The Arcane', we're most struck with ASC's emphasis on atmospherics and synthwork - they come first compared to his relatively functional breakscience, which are like godlike apparatuses guiding us through heavily nuanced, heavenly vistas. That functionality goes out of the window with 'Threeform', though - an unusually sound-designed number which introduces suddenly-huge variation in the breaks, in what is said to be ¾ time.

Review: In contrast to the deluge of raw d&b we've let through the floodgates this week, ASC's latest EP is a dreamy and twinkly scene-setter. Nodding to the presence of godlike, benevolent celestial beings behind the beats, tracks like 'Averted Visions' and 'Aphelion's Edge' seem to be getting at something like a divine ideal of space jungle. They play up the entrancing possibilities of the breakbeat (however lo-fi the original drum samples are) rather than their banger potential.

Review: Dom & Roland was amongst the first to help Over/Shadow kick into gear back in 2020 and, since returning with another 12" last year, a collaboration with long absent legend DJ Crystl, now comes a fully-fledged album. Those following matters closely on the Over/Shadow site will have had the chance to nab a copy of the album with this bonus 12", but for the rest of us, the double-drop of 'Eminence' and 'Time To Change' is now available as a standalone 12". It's brooding and dramatic, offering a cinematic vision of what d&b can be in the right hands, and who better than a seasoned pro like Dominic Angas?

Armed with a sound and style that's straight out of 93 (and a birth certificate to match too by the looks of things), Uneak is proof you're never too old to breakthrough with a slamming debut. All four of these cuts hit with clarity and breakbeat authenticity as we bubble and bump to a range of flavours; 'Roll Thunder' hits like an old V release circa 94, 'No Retreat' would have burnt Roast down, 'Wicked Jungle' is all about the sunnyside horns while 'All Be Free' brings the euphoric hurricanes. A highly accomplished debut release.

Review: A fresh run of a release that first came out in 1996, 'Chopper' hears a collision of worlds between two drum n' bass stalwarts, Ray Keith and Dark Soldier (pro-tip: they're the same person). Dread Recordings, the label founded by Keith in 1994, houses this monster. It features two tracks: 'Chopper' and 'Back To Me' - the former is a classic jungle tune, and has been remixed many times by a plethora of heatbringers such as Shy FX, Bladerunner and Critical Impact. The latter, however, is brand new, and showcases Keith's signature darkness and heaviness with crushing flair.

Review: ASC can't really do any wrong if you ask us, whether crafting suspensory ambient or laying down killer jungle cuts. It's the latter which he does here for the Spatial label in the form of this great looking multi-colour splatter vinyl. 'Infinity' has you adrift in the cosmos on dusty amen breaks, then '2097' is a tight and kinetic number with mystic lead and yelping vocal fragments. There is yet more deep space mystery to the melodies of 'What Lies Beneath' then humid closer 'Rainforest' has watery droplets falling down physical drum breaks that make you move your hole body.

Review: Prolific under a variety of different aliases between them, Italian artists Big Hands and Banishsh continue to push the limits on the latter's new SM000 imprint. Sitting right on the edge of a variety of genre hinterlands, there are notes of jungle, dub, techno and IDM running throughout. Big Hands' 'SWGGN' vibes with the most upbeat feeling and flow while Banishsh's 'OP' version hits with much more of a dancehall bounce and sense of bass tension and the '55' deconstructs and dubs things out even more. Stark behaviours.

Taking off where he left us with his Rupture EP a while back, here the London artist gets even spacier and more cosmic as we hurtle around the jungle nebula. 'Way Back When' boasts some beautiful cascading pads and sudden dramatic switches, 'Days Gone By' gets into more of a microfunk situation with its super tight springy riff while 'Future Times' finishes off with a vibe and tone that's so serene you'd swear you've taken a wrong turn and found yourself in a place of worship. Phenomenal.

Rhea's Revenge (6:11)
Review: Sam KDC's voyage into parts unknown continues apace on this latest release for Samurai Music, as the producer takes tropes of d&b into ever more meditative, swampy surroundings. There's a creeping intensity to 'Indra's Net' which will go down a storm with anyone exploring that fertile crossover between deep techno and tech-step. 'The Shroud' is a more mystical affair, while 'Metempsychosis' leans in on hidden layers of detailed synth work and a slowly modulating time-stretched snare that lodges itself in your skull. 'Rhea's Revenge' finishes off on a taut note, bringing its own sub-tropical climate and a plethora of subliminal details to get your very far outside your body through the power of sound alone.

Review: Big Bud originally released Faceless/New Vision back in 1995 on Underdog Recordings, offering up a weighty variant of atmospheric d&b that he made his own. As you might expect OG copies of this mid-decade change hands for some hefty sums, but fear not because Vinyl Fanatiks are on hand with a spanking new pressing on pink vinyl no less. A side 'Faceless' is a laser-focused roller with tightly clipped breaks and strafing synths, but 'New Vision' is the real gem which gets more intricate in the drum programming, drawing on less heavily mined percussion and more artful synth work to make a truly standout cut.

On this latest 12" for Spatial, we get whisked away on a cloud of atmospheric d&b finery with 'Dreamcatcher' before plummeting to earth with the hard-knocking drum science of 'Tranquility'. 'Drifting Thru' pairs rough amens with epic pads and then 'Floatation' explores more acutely angled breaks and an immersive pool of melodic composition, holding true to the Spatial remit as an outlet for the deeper end of the junglist spectrum.

Also operating under aliases such as Sky City and P.E.P during the 90s, the JLM name was synonymous with the deeper, atmospheric sounds of jungle. And that's exactly what we have here. Four blissful, subtle and restrained atmospheric jungle cuts. Highlights include the swashbuckling breaks on 'The Navigator' and the dream-like haze of opener 'The Cartographer'. Welcome back JLM.

Breaking away from the bangerized, 'Part Of The Order' is a junglist's fever dream, occupying the liminal spaces between rollage, hard heat and liquidation in equal measure. On it, tribal drum grooves ('Planet's Rhythm') and lo-fi breaks ('Disco Undertaker') weave between bursts of heavenly synthwork and existential vocal samples. Even weirdo art-pop jungle rears its head ('J.W.'s Experiment'), proving this one of the weirder ends to De Roos' catalogue.

Focusing on those tense and spacious jazzy samples that characterised drum & bass in the mid-90s (think Peshay, think Photek), tracks like 'Drama', 'Fortune Green' and 'Off Broadway' hit with that timeless, gritty, burnt soul vibe while cuts like 'This Condition' and KILLSWSH's remix of 'She Moves' flex with more of a contemporary vibe. All of them rock and sound so much better for being on wax.
