Review: Stroom's latest chunk of left-of-centre brilliance comes from Jan Van Der Broeke, an artist active since the 1980s who's arguably most famous for his work under the Absent Music, June 11 and The Misz aliases. 11,000 Dreams is his first career retrospective and draws on 30 years worth of self-released cassettes and CD-Rs. It's a sublime set, all told, pulling together dreamy, evocative, melodious and soft-touch tracks that blur the boundaries between ambient, skewed downtempo pop, blissful warmth, spoken word laden cheeriness (the odd but brilliant "My Lesbian Girlfriends") and spacey cuts laden with exotic instrumentation and whistling synthesizer melodies.

But that doesn't make this 2008 masterpiece worthy of this new gory, visceral reissue; far from it. Limited to just 555 copies and splattered with the murderous blood of listeners who didn't survive the album's first incarnation from beginning to end, this one contains 8 additional tracks, including an exclusive live 'work in progress' track ('Backwards'), documenting the many criminally insane production choices Peter Christopherson and co. would make in real time.

Review: "Anthology" serves as a celebration of The Clean, a band whose influence extends so far beyond their New Zealand home that even if you have never heard of The Clean before, you have surely heard of some of the bands (Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Superchunk, to name a few) who have been influenced by their unique blend of homemade garage rock, hook-filled melodies and psychedelic experimentalism.
The album is a compilation from across The Clean's legendary career, which began in 1981 and continues today. Merge originally released the two CD "Anthology" in 2003, but now this collection is available on quadruple LP. "Anthology" kicks off with The Clean's call-to-arms debut "Tally Ho!"; the story of the infectious track's $60 recording bill is now legendary. It continues with the early EPs "Boodle Boodle Boodle" and "Great Sounds Great" in their entirety. The hits "Billy Two", "Anything Could Happen", "Beatnik" and "Getting Older", live favorites like "Point That Thing Somewhere Else" and instrumentals "Fish" and "At the Bottom" all serve up memories of the joyous noise that characterized The Clean of that time. These recordings, mostly made by the band with Chris Knox and Doug Hood at the helm of the 4-track, capture the bright, raw sound of a classic garage band.
After a brief breakup, the band recorded "Vehicle" in 1989, made in three days and engineered by Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine). The sounds of "Vehicle" and the two albums that followed it, "Modern Rock" (1994) and "Unknown Country" (1996), make up the bulk of discs 3 and 4 of the vinyl "Anthology". Review: DJ Nu Mark is best known as one of the producers for West Coast hip-hop heroes Jurassic 5, but he keeps himself busy outside of those duties with a devoted studio practice in search of killer grooves by any means necessary. Last year he created the Creme De La Crate pack for use in Ableton Live, using vintage recording techniques and years of studio prowess to deliver heavyweight drum hits, breaks, loops and fills. Now he's committed some of those sounds to wax, giving turntablists something to get busy with if they like to do things the good old way. They took the form of collaborations and side projects with plenty of big names form the worlds of pop, electronic and contemporary classical and are now all gathered together on this Sleepwalkers album. Given a co-sign by the always on-point BBE and IF Music founder Jean-Claude, the label is now enjoying a retrospective compilation which seeks to celebrate the best of their golden years. Featuring performances by John Stubblefield, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Don Cherry, Cecil McBee and Pharoah Sanders collaborator Marvin Hannibal Peterson to name but a few, this collection provides a great jumping-off point for Enja's rich and diverse back catalogue. It may only be an introduction to a vast pool of music, but it's curated with authority by a dedicated head, so you know you're getting a shortcut to the best the label has to offer.

Review: Elysian On Moon Lake is a new album from TECWAA that takes a differs path than its predecessor. Where that one was full of air and sparkle, this one is more claustrophobic and dusty. It is tight and dark an involving with plenty of weird electronics obscuring the beauty of the pianos on opener 'Never, There. Was.' 'Tropic Notations' is a cosmic workout with electro drums and aline synth sounds, while things get leggy and zoned out on 'No Lies To Her Fire.' Highlights on the second side include 'Welcome Dystopia' with its visceral techno stomp.

Review: Blue Jazz's on going Tone Poet Series - which is about reissuing classic jazz on heavyweight, audiophile quality vinyl - throws out another gem here with the Hank Mobley classic Soul Station. Hank started out as a pianist before moving to the tenor sax aged 16. He put plenty of emotion and intensity into every note he played and during the years 1955-1970 he fronted more than 25 Blue Note albums as well as being a sideman on many others. Made up of former Adam & The Ants members and teenage singer Annabella Lwin, they whipped up a powerful twist on the new wave template in which Burundi-style drumming, twanging Americana and post-punk scratchiness collided with pop hooks. If you can't get enough of that era of music, you will surely love discovering or re-discovering this breakthrough album from one of popular music's true curios.

Review: Stefano Tirone is one of Schema Records's main men and here he remixes his own last album Moby and Soul. He reworks it into a more dance floor friendly disco sound with bright nu-disco melodies and slinky drums. It is an homage to the original sounds of the 70s and 80s and American DJ Larry Levan and Italian Baldelli. Opener 'Body & Soul' kicks off with nice fresh and upbeat vibes and then there are summery Balearic sounds like the gorgeous 'Flying Away' and the groovy 'In The Name Of Love' (feat Laura Fedele - extended remix). 'No Meio Do Samba' then sinks into hip swinging house territory.

Review: Claire Rousay proves that ambient can be radical. Her sublime style and surreal sonic scapes take up two sides of vinyl here on this new album Everything Perfect Is Already Here. 'It Feel Foolish To Care' is awash with mellifluous harps and found sound recordings, shakers and distant sounds of nature. It's a beautiful place to be, wherever it is. The second side is another 15 minute gem, 'Everything Perfect Is Already Here' that again finds Rousay as arranger and bandleader. Her strings here are more tortured and pained to start with before falling away to reveal twitchy synthetic sounds and abstract electronic textures.

Review: Perfectly straddling the transition from the bling rap era and the conscious rap movement, Killer Mike's 'RAP Music' was raved about when it released in 2012, receiving an 8.6 by Pitchfork and ending up high on countless end-of-year lists from publications. Killer Mike's hardstyle political lyricism, and exclusive star-studded line-up (including the likes of Scar, T.I. and E-IP) made this one of 2012's best releases. A consistent, high-quality flow with a fire pen and even hotter samples makes this one of the most overlooked hip-hop projects when it comes to the conversation of essentials. 'Go!', 'Untitled' and 'Southern Fried' are textual delights, to be expected from 2012 MVP front-runner EI-P. The latter being an ode to southern rap, often overlooked since the departure of Outkast (referenced in the lyrics "Ain't I Fresh, Ain't I Clean?"), even using the now infamous "Break" vocal sample used in Stankonia. Expect high class rapping, backed by soul claps, organ filled boom baps and funky bass. On a green double vinyl featuring those incredible instrumentals, this is the perfect treatment for what may be the most slept on rap project of that decade.

Review: Yet another first time reissue of a classic, Mongo Santamaria's 'Sofrito'. Don't be confused by the pico de gallo on the front cover; this isn't a salsa album, but rather a career-defining jazz, Afro-Cuban music and funk selection of delights. First released in 1976, it was the master conguero's (conga player's) most defining album, and now gets a proper remaster by Kevin Gray.

Review: Erykah Badu tops up her patented purple vinyl reissue series, which she's slowly been building up over the last few years. Taking influence from hip-hop, jazz, R&B and art rock, the album 'But You Caint Use My Phone', originally released in 2015, dealt with the challenges of dealing with quiet-storm emotion in an isolated digital age. Prescient for the post-COVID era, this remaster and reissue is just as well-received for missed Zoom calls as it is for missed Nokia bells.

Review: It has somehow been over a decade since Galaxian put out their last album. We Are Power finds them head in an all new direction as they ruminate on "the confrontation and power clash between humankind, nature, the spiritual and mechanistic industrial growth societies." Monologues make that explicit in places, while the Glaswegian's productions are generally a little softer than in the past. There are ambient beauties amongst more kinetic electro kickers and caustic techno cuts that fire every synapse in your body. It's an expansive work and we are very much glad they are back.
