Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light smudges, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

Following up a terrific full-length on Ghostly International back in September, Dylan Khotin-Foote returns to San Francisco's Public Release with the Dream Mentor EP, featuring a bunch of woozy lo-fi house cuts that the Edmonton-based producer has made a name for himself with over the last few years. From the rolling and bittersweet bounce of the title track, the gliding slo-mo acid euphoria of 'Service Provider', he dusky, sensual mood music of 'Digital Field Trip' to the ethereal and evocative electro dream of closing cut 'Moon Over The Country Club' - this marks a standout year for the ascending Canadian producer.

Yusef Lateef - "Love Theme From Spartacus"
Cannonball Adderley Sextet - "Brother John"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing on outer sleeve, also the record has light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

This must-check dinked 45 brings together two killer and influential jazz recordings from the early 1960s. On the A-side you'll find Yusuf Lateef's inspired cover of Alen North's 'Spartacus Love Theme', a shuffling, Latin-tinged, piano-laden affair that inspired many subsequent interpretations from fellow musical titans (think Ramsey Lewis, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris and Bill Evans, for starters). It's an effortlessly breezy and life-affirming version that stands apart from the hard-bop jazz jams that Lateef was recording at the time. On the flip you'll find the scarce 7" edit of the Cannonball Alderley Sextet's recording of 'Brother John', a cool jazz interpretation that famously features a rare oboe solo from the track's composer (and Sextet member), Yusuf Lateef.

Love Your Brother
Love Your Dub
Gratiot's Tiger
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Back in the late 1990s French twosome DJ Deep and Julien Jabre released a handful of fine - and now hard to find - EPs as "The Deep". 1997's "The Earth EP" was arguably the strongest of the lot, hence this re-mastered reissue from the on-point Mint Condition camp. Heading up the EP is "Love Your Brother", a fine fusion of swinging, tech-tinged grooves, US garage style organ stabs and effortlessly soulful vocal samples that sounds every bit as far-sighted in 2020 as it did back in the day. Over on the flip you'll find the stripped back and slightly spacey sounding "Love Your Dub" revision, as well as original flipside "Gratiot's Tiger", a slightly woozier and dreamier chunk of deep house/tech-house fusion.

Marshall Jefferson - "Vibe Three"
Jungle Wonz - "Human Condition"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Chicago house heads rejoice, because right here we have a holy grail release. Marshall Jefferson originally recorded "Vibe Three" in 1985, and it was only ever played by Ron Hardy at seminal club The Music Box. Gene Hunt and Emanuel Pippin were amongst the only other DJs to have a copy of the tape, but the track was never released until now. This is pre-"Move Your Body" music, capturing the soul and vitality of house music at its inception and sounding as fresh as it would have back then. As well as Jefferson's instrumental original, the flip finds Jefferson teaming up with his partner in Jungle Wonz, Harry Dennis, for a poignant vocal version called "Human Condition". Don't sleep on this, as it won't be around for long.

Longeez - "Evermore" (4:47)
Longeez - "Wheel Up" (5:09)
Review: The latest from Burnski's Vivid label is a three way split, six track affair with Oldboy, Xander and Longeez each dispatching a pair of tunes in the label's trademark roughneck breakbeat style. - Oldboy kicks off proceedings with the speedy junglisms of 'Blackbird' before the chunkier, funkier and a little more traditionally paced breaks heft of 'Walrus Party'. Xander's 'If I Tell EM' and 'Get To The Point' both plays off two step rhythmic twists and menacing bass against dreamy synths and more breakbeaty flourishes, before Longeez closes proceedings with the slightly sparser 'Evermore' - super sharp hi hats and echoing rasta dialogue - and the appropriately spinback-peppered 'Wheel Up'.

On most occasions, the Scottish artist Robert Rental (1952-2000) worked with hometown friend Thomas Leer (Act/Pressure) or Mute Records' Daniel Miller in studios, but these rough sketches were recorded at a council flat in Battersea circa 1980 - laying unheard for years amongst his family's treasured possessions. Featured on Different Voices For You Different Colours For Me are rare perspectives of the British post punk icon's solo work. Optimo's JD Twitch states that 'in this current era where so much music is so completely focused on the production.. it's a pleasant shock to discover that a forgotten tape from nearly 40 years ago can be the freshest and most refreshing sounding thing ever.'

Review: After launching last year via an arguably overlooked EP from Obsidian, Parallel Connection has made us wait a little while for the London label's second release. It comes courtesy of Sela, a 25-year-old French producer who apparently honed his soon to be trademark sound while living in the UK. There's much to enjoy across the four track missive, from the alien electronics, loose-limbed broken electro beats and chiming lead lines of '2020 Connection' and sub-heavy, acid-flecked stomp of 'Animal Kingdom', to the pitched-down electronica eccentricity of 'Really Get Fucked' and the psychedelic late-night tech-house hedonism of 'Mr Rabbit', which boasts bleeping melodies reminiscent of both mod-90s ambient techno and Yorkshire bleep and bass.

This one is titled 'Cha Cha Club' and it is a dark and foggy club-ready cut that straddles the line between techno and electro. Here he gives it a form in the real world as he offers up real emotional depths and wondrous highs that will encourage deep introspection and firm connections with your inner most self. Mira is full of widescreen pieces, smeared pads and gently rising lines that subsume you in heavenly sonics.

Review: Roy Of The Ravers takes a break from his mischievious outings on Acid Waxa et al to lay down some of his braindance tackle on Emotional Response. White Line Sunrise II.I (Le Roy Soleil) can rightly be considered a follow-up to White Line Sunrise II and indeed it represents a similar kind of spectrum of electronica. Roy's sound is edging further into the kind of 'artist' territory where slower, softer tracks, odd vocal diversions and some pop sensibilities merge with the acid, electro, breakbeat and other well-established tropes of his sound. It's the kind of record which could easily broach this quirky fringe operator of UK electronics to a broader fan base, and there's no doubt he's got the melodic, emotional heft on tracks like 'Versace 101624' to get everyone on board.

Review: Introducing Wobbly Mob, a new independent label based between Germany and the UK. Their debut release is by rising producer Glockta (aka Popka) from York, who serves up a collection of diverse tracks on WMR001. Detroit meets 2-step on the wondrous opener 'Plastic Fiver' which receives a ravey remix by Shawn Cartier over on the flip later, there's also off-kilter late night mood music on 'No Diamonds' and the rolling low end theory of 'Next Year'.

Review: Few if any artists have a sound as wacky yet wonderful as DJ Fett Burger, so having him remix anything is always going to be worth hearing. Here he turns his attention to a couple of tunes by Jennifer Loveless for his Sex Tags label outta Norway. First up he heads to the stars on waves of acid, astral melodies and prickly deep techno drums. On the flip is a more spaced out sound with tumbling toms looping in a hypnotic fashion beneath sustained chords that bring the soul. These are two out there sounds for late-night dance floors.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

After some great ones by Desert Sound Colony and label co-heads Alec Falconer and Tiago Walter, Ba Dum Tish are back with another curious release by the enigmatic Active Research. It's the sound of the '90s underground on the A side, with the dark drum & bass epic 'Howweryuu' and its Optical / Alex Reece influence, followed by the UK electronica throwback sounds on 'Apexxx North'. On the flip, things take a more abstract turn on the deep and dystopian electro bass journey "Collection Of Noises" followed by the sublime ambient bliss of "Loosen The Moorings".

To Know Nothing
Review: ***B-STOCK: Split/tear to spine of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Tim Green has become well known for crafting massive techno rollers with that little something extra which makes them standout. He has been behind a number of epic summer anthems on the likes of Cocoon before now and here lands on Moscow's Shanti Radio with two more well crafted tunes, but ones that go a little deeper. Both are of course carefully melodic affairs. The first, 'Sea Parade' is awash with churchy chords and gently swaying drums that sink you into a reverie. Delicate vocal sounds, shakers and dreamy pads all add to the illusion. 'To Know Nothing' is an angelic roller that All Day I Dream fans will lap up.

Total Science & FD - "3 Way"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

One look at who's involved here should raise any drum and bass head's eyebrows. All genre A-listers, it's one of those release schedule entries that's guaranteed to get everyone excited, and thankfully the pudding is just as tasty as those ingredients. Break & Kyo lead the charge with 'Past North', a summertime anthem-in-the-making opening on acoustic guitar chords that wouldn't sound weird on a Me One record. Definitely one for festivals, boxfresh percussion ensures it fully fires off once the poppier elements temporarily subside. That said, DJ Marky's 'Hard Hands' trumps it for crisp drum work, delivering some typically exotic vibes. Ill Truth and Satl's 'In Your Soul', or at least its Lenzman remix, keeps the sexy and smooth warmth alive, with '3 Way' closing out on a dub-influenced tip courtesy of Total Science and FD.
