Review: It's taken a while, but finally Thom Yorke's impressive third solo album, "ANIMA", is available on wax (and in a fetching shade of orange, too). A future classic that continues the legacy he started with XL Recordings back in 2006 (with his solo debut The Eraser), ANIMA is well worth picking up, as Yorke and co-producer Nigel Godrich offer up evocative, off-kilter songs built around the twin attractions of the Radiohead man's distinctive vocals and skewed backing tracks rich in layered electronic noise, body-bending sub-bass, discordant synthesizer parts and intriguingly jaunty drum loops. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the creepy, lo-fi ambient swirl of "Last I Heard (...He Was Circling the Drain)" and "Dawn Chorus" (a blissfully dewy-eyed early morning soundscape), to the low-slung, post-trip-hop hum of "I Am A Very Rude Person" and the fizzing, jazz-fired thrust of "Impossible Knots". Melancholic, yes. Deep and self-effacing, of course. Nihilistic, not really. Percussive futurist sub-pop is back.

Bass
  1. Dive (5:32)
  2. Rain (3:41)
Review: Last year Burial and the Bug joined forces as Flame 1, delivering an in-demand EP on the latter's Pressure label featuring two sizable slabs of industrial strength soundsystem science. Here they return as Flame 2, once again offering up a pair of weighty dancefloor excursions. A-side "Dive" is a loud and claustrophobic affair, as the duo wraps dystopian dub bass and sparse, mutilated post-drill rhythms in layers of apocalyptic aural textures and mind-altering dub techno style processed noise. Flipside "Rain" is arguably more suitable for dancefloor plays and sees the esteemed twosome combine pulverizing sub-bass heaviness with dancehall style drums that come smothered in mind-melting effects and paranoia-inducing aural smoke.

Review: It's always good to see a split release from two artists whose track records (no pun intended) make it very difficult to predict where the new wares will fit. Which is exactly the case with this one, given K15's oeuvre name-checks imprints like Wotnot Music, Eglo and Wild Oats, while SMDB has appeared on Funkineven's Apron and the always great Lo Recordings in recent years. Needless to say, then, if we can rely on one thing it's that everything on this expansive, obscure collection of curveballs will be deep and richly textured. From 'Pace & Time''s downtempo barroom jazz, to the shuffling broken beats and waves of synth on 'Dry Mango (Part 2)', the confusing beat structures and delicate piano play of 'Earth State' to 'Syntherlude''s beat-less, science fiction tune up, it's all well made stuff.

  3. Mariachi (4:46)
  4. Desacorde (4:15)
Review: From Patron and Wolfskuil to this first drop on Or:la's new label Cead, Utrecht producer Lewski is fast establishing himself in the buzzing space that exists between techno, electro and more experimental fare. "Guadala" has an uptempo bite, but there's plenty of dubby immersion to be felt in the bubbling synth drops and splashy reverb trails. "Jara" has its own kind of crooked intent, pockmarked with acid swerves and interlocking rhythms to get synapses firing. "Mariachi" takes things back to the peppier end of the tempo spectrum, clearly aiming for the peak time without making any cliched moves - no mean feat - and then "Descacorde" switches things up with a stomping electro house workout that brings a wholly different flavour to this excellent EP.

Review: Alexandra Drewchin's work as Eartheater reached a wider audience when it landed on Pan last year via the head-spinning "IRISIRI" album. Now she returns to the label she first emerged on, Hausu Mountain, for a reissue of her 2015 album "Metalepsis". It's a surprisingly direct record, even as it swerves from folky incantations to pastoral techno ruminations across nine bold and distinctive tracks. Both ambitious in scope and focused in execution, it's a perfect companion piece to "IRISIRI" that points out the skill and versatility at the disposal of this most crucial of contemporary artists.

Review: Veteran Toronto-based producer Gregory de Rocher's career spans over 20 years, where he has released on the likes of City Centre Offices, Ersatz Audio and his own Suction Records - which he co-founded in 1997 with like-minded producer Jason Amm (aka Solvent). They present a collection of salvaged tape recordings from 1996 under de Rocher's lesser known Pest(e) moniker. A fascinating assortment of analogue electronics originally intended as a demo, it was at one point almost released on seminal UK label Skam but de Rocher ended up releasing it himself under the Lowfish alias - this being his debut album under the moniker. He uses broad strokes to paint a picture across the various tracks: from the jungle reductions of "Sieve", cosmic electro of "Agamemnon", to the evocative IDM trip of "Polychromerats" and hypnotic drone piece "Lungs Of The Clock".

Review: Ochre's 2004 album "A Midsummer Nice Dream" has long been considered something of an underground IDM classic - a perfectly produced set that sits somewhere between the melodic warmth of Plaid, the cheerful bliss of Boards of Canada and the twisted-but-ear-catching brilliance of Autechre's "Amber" LP. In honour of its 15th birthday, Spanish label Lapsus has secured the rights to reissue it on vinyl. Given that original "wax" copies now change hands for vast sums online, this is a very good thing indeed. This time round, the original 14-track set has been expanded via the inclusion of a trio of previously unheard tracks recorded during the same period. These can be found on side 4 and are every bit as good as the material that originally made the cut.

Review: Riccardo Mazza, more commonly working as RM these days, last appeared on iDEAL Recordings back in 2016 with the "Unfit" LP. Since then he's been spotted on Yerevan Tapes, but now makes a strong return to the Swedish experimental behemoth with some fiercely individual electronica that pivots from a braindance attitude into more challenging tonal fare on the turn of a dime. It makes for an exciting listen, where beatless excursions weave and slide between dynamically programmed drum machine workouts. Mazza's style is exuberant and expressive even as it skirts on the outer realms of electronic music, making for a record you could happily return to for repeat trips.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: the first ever release of Coil's 1992 soundtrack to the VHS-only sex-ed documentary "The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex". It's always been something of an in-demand curio, primarily because it sees John Balance, Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde not in industrial or experimental mode, but rather exploring the dreamy chord sequences and warming horizontal of ambient house (albeit with occasional nods towards acid jazz/proto trip-hop and what Hyde describes as "sort of progressive house"). It's very good, though, and comes with two tasty bonus cuts, "Nasa Arab" and "Omlagus Garfungiloops", which are vastly different versions of other soundtrack cuts. These were originally featured on a CD-only release in 1992.

Review: Masked electronic maverick J-Zbel has a thing for ridiculous release titles - see his early EPs for proof - but even by his standards "Dog's Fart Is So Bad The Cat Throws Up" is an absolute peach. The music contained on the release, which marks his debut album, is a little more serious, though the fast-rising producer does sound like he's having bags of fun throughout. His style is fluid and hard-to-define, with the album's 12 tracks flitting between wobble-bass propelled, mind-altering dancefloor stompers ("Hardcore Jusqu'Au PeF"), weird and wayward dancehall riddims ("Le Riddim Du Bardouin"), psychedelic acid techno ("Tunnel Vision"), spaced-put experimental beat-scapes ("Rustie Le Clown"), pitch-black eccentricity ("Bertrand Au Mont D'or"), bleep-heavy post jungle ("Excremangue") and opaque ambient ("Check In").

  4. Track 4 (13:47)
Review: We are definitely not worthy. Or at least only just worthy. Arriving on stunning transparent wax this double header from 2000 combines two legendary forces in ambient and stripped compositions, making a very clear statement of intent. Buy it now or forever deal with the fallout. Perhaps one of the most impressive things about the tracks presented in this special edition, limited run package is the sonic depth achieved without forsaking minimalism. There doesn't necessarily appear to be much going on, but the soundcapes- or perhaps more accurately soundscape, given the quartet is wholly coherent and interconnected- feels so dense it's as if you could reach out and touch the work. Growing, building, expanding and mutating, the resulting tension and brooding atmosphere positions this as a crowning achievement on the part of both Finland's Pan Sonic and American Charlemagne Palestine.

  3. David Morley - "Traytor" (6:21)
Review: De:tuned's 10th anniversary series has so far served up killer, previously unreleased material from a whole host of underground heroes, scene pioneers and household names. They're at it again on this sixth volume in the ongoing series, which begins with a now rare - but typically weird and out-there - cut from early 90s ambient/techno/electro fusionists The Future Sound Of London. "Skinny XAM" is peak FSOL and sounds like it could have come from the improvised radio broadcasts that inspired the duo's "ISDN" album. Elsewhere, Monolake AKA Robert Henke does his best Autechre impression on the dark and punchy "ForC160q", while David Morley wraps undulating acid lines and creepy effects around a hypnotic ambient techno groove on "Traytor".

Review: Music On Vinyl has done the world a favour - or vinyl-loving ambient enthusiasts, at least - by offering up wax editions of Klaus Schulze and Pete Namlook's work as Dark Side of the Moog. For the uninitiated, the German duo released a string of CD-only ambient albums under the alias over a 14-year period between 1994 and 2008. Volume six, subtitled "the Final DAT", first surfaced on Namlook's Fax label in 1997. It featured fellow ambient explorer Bill Laswell and features tracks that drift between spoken word-laden deep space soundscapes ("Part I"), trip-hop influenced late night shufflers ("Part II"), bubbly ambient trance ("Part III"), blissful ambient techno ("Part IV", with its sun-kissed guitar solos and spaced-out grooves) and widescreen electronic epics (the utterly sublime brilliance of 24-minute "Part V").

Review: Between 1994 and 2008, German electronic legends Klaus Schulze and Pete Namlook recorded eleven albums as Dark Side of The Moog. Most of these were never released on vinyl, making this first wax edition of 1996's volume five - in which another legendary figure, Bill Laswell, also contributed - a must have for ambient enthusiasts. The set itself is typical of the pair's collaborative work, offering up a mixture of synthesizer-powered neo-classical movements, breathtaking ambient soundscapes, gentle rhythmic spaced-out epics, sunrise-ready electronica and deep space ambient dub. It's the sound of two true masters at work, offering up timeless electronic music that will never sound tired or contrived.

  1. Palm Sugar Candy (15:56)
  2. Simian Angel (19:59)
Review: Since 2012, much of Oren Ambarchi's solo has been focused on the intense potential of driving rhythms. "Simian Angel", the experimentalist guitarist and percussionist's 21st solo set, is a far more picturesque and slowly shifting affair. While there are distant drums present on opener "Palm Sugar Candy" (provided by Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista), these are buried a little in the mix, with Ambarchi's becalmed electronic tones, slow motion ambient chords and distinctive, effects-laden guitars taking centre stage. The results are warm, inviting and sun-kissed. The same could be said about title track "Simian Angel", an opaque, sun-bright suite of interconnected movements marked out by intricate piano solos, hazy guitar tones and visceral aural textures.

Review: Well, we couldn't really be happier. In fact, there is almost nothing to say about this album apart from the fact that it is absolutely, downright essential. Originally released in 1986 on Rough Trade here in the UK, it has been reissued a few time over the years but has always vanished in the blink of an eye and reappeared on the EBay and Discogs circuits for big bucks. Finally, you can indulge in a beautifully remastered version on virgin vinyl. In what is seen by many cultic Russell fans as perhaps his biggest achievement, the LP drifts in and out of light and shadows with utter ease, truly portraying the genius of the man who paved much of the way for modern electronic music generally. From start to finish, it's an ethereal mixture of sparse beats, effect manipulations and folklore, charismatically told by one of the only artists in the history of experimental music to really combine and successfully bind so many unexpected musical terrains. We are only mere mortals, so we won't describe the music to you...just get yourself a copy and see...

Review: The ever reliable Macadam Mambo returns with the second opus of Eiger Drums: featuring more oddball grooves of the ambient/krautrock persuasion by Louis E Bola. He's one half of Lyonnaise outfit The Pilotwings in collaboration with musicians Geddes Hadden, Arthur Tempo, Akino Karma, Sound Of Duty Free & Pierre Mortimer-Dubation. A more dancefloor oriented album than the previous outing, reviving early new age/trance aesthetics with tribal influences. From the lo-slung weirdo folk of "The Sun", or "Astral Lights" with its exotic psych-drone aesthetic through to the steely slo-mo post punk of "Astral Lights" or the horror movie vibe of "The Moon" - be prepared to get weird on this one!
