Review: It's only been a year since his last release but in that time Stones Throw man Kiefer has toured the USA and Europe, released a mini-album as well as making three beats for Anderson .Paak's last two albums "Oxnard" and "Ventura". "Superbloom" finds him at his best, with invigorating sunny day beats and bright synths soundtracking a lovely afternoon the park. Jazz stylings, introspective chords and plaintive piano playing make this an emotionally stirring record with real depth, and one that reveals more with each listen. It feels like Kiefer's most honest, vulnerable and personal album yet.

Review: Since debuting in the early 2000s, Dutch trio Kraak & Smaak have established themselves as one of Europe's premier purveyors of eclectic, funk-fuelled dancefloor positivity. It's little surprise then to find that their new album "Pleasure Centre" - their sixth studio set in total - is another joyous romp. This time round, they've drawn more influence from West Coast style blue-eyed soul and yacht rock while continuing to offer nods towards boogie, P-funk, synth-pop, '80s soul, jazz-funk and Rotary Connection (see the superb "Twilght", with vocals by rising star Izo FitzRoy). It's a wonderfully warm and attractive blend, with the result being a superb collection of dancefloor cuts and heady downtempo numbers that all adds up to their best album to date.

Review: Over the course of her three year solo career, London-based Australian Carla Dal Forno has steadily moved from a dark, stylish and bleak all-electronic sound to something a little warmer and more organic in tone. On "Look Up Sharp", her third album, she continues this trend, complimenting her usual lo-fi drum machines and synths with low-slung post-punk bass and the kind of pastoral, traditional instrumentation more often associated with folk music (think flutes, recorders, clarinet etc.). It's a curious blend, but one that works wonderfully well throughout the album, and especially on those songs to which she adds evocative, often melancholic vocals.

Review: When you use words like "prickly", "abrasive" and "uncompromising" it's rarely flattering. Consider Kim Gordon's exceptional powerhouse long form one of the exceptions. As far removed from music for the masses as you could hope for, it takes a particular talent to deliver work like "No Record Home". Labels such as punk certainly apply, but it's less about mouths gushing spittle amid the deafening screams of guitars and raucous vocals, and more about overall attitude. No change there for this co-founder of the mighty Sonic Youth then. Loud and intelligent, forthright and yet heartfelt and tender in its own unforgiving way, it's as far removed from wall of sound discordance as it is anything you could describe as remotely over-explored. Marrying the bloody-lipped electro of Peaches and body blow lows of EBM with gritty rock 'n' roll chords, those looking for originality that oozes repeatability should consider their hunt over, for now at least.

Review: There are two things Starcrawler can definitely be described as - lost children of the 1970s, and incredibly Los Angeles in style. They make music that seems impossible to remove from one of the headiest rock 'n' roll decades in history, despite age preventing them from actually having been there at the time. It also falls on the polished side of heavy metal, channeling both pop punk and bare-chested, sweat-soaked guitar solos in one fell swoop. The result is a record that plays out like a bar fight in Tinsel Town. Muscular, powerful, driving and unarguably sexy, from the gaggle of kids preceding the onslaught of opener "Lizzy" to the final, liquor-soaked midnight sing-a-long of "Call Me A Baby", "Devour You" does what it says on the tin, with all the subtlety of Hollywood's finest, and perhaps even more entertainment value.

Review: It's not hard to understand why people so often ignore album release blurb. Sales-y, hyperbolic, and on more than the odd occasion rather poorly written, it's hardly required reading in order to get the most out of the record. That is unless it's Big Thief's 'Two Hands', a collection of music that genuinely makes more sense when you know the back story. For one thing this long form offering is arriving just months after its predecessor, which is always either the sign of a band that don't need big ideas to facilitate rapid-fire output, or a band that have so many big ideas they literally can't stop the momentum. This is a case of the latter. Timescale aside, "Two Hands" genuinely feels as though it was born in the Badlands, epic songs that invoke endless vistas across barren settings in a way that makes you feel as small as you actually are in a global context. Like cosying up in a log cabin away from the chilly endless dark of a desert night.

Review: Since turning up in the Windy city a few years ago, spiritual jazz singer, clarinetist and composer Angel Bat Dawid has become a stalwart of Chicago's vibrant avant-garde scene. Here he delivers a debut album that should, if there's any justice at least, propel her towards international superstardom. Both her melancholic clarinet lines and distinctive singing feature prominently throughout, alongside sparse percussion, occasional Afro-futurist synthesizer motifs, harp and guitars - all of which Dawid plays herself. It's a virtuoso display that more than confirms her status as one of the spiritual jazz scene's most authentic voices.

Review: Mancunian legends Graham Massey and Andy Barker reunite for the first 808 State album in 17 years. They recorded the new opus "Transmission Suite" in the Granada studios (where they once performed live on television 30 years ago) and looked to their hometown's club scene as their main source of influence - along with the timeless aesthetic of Detroit which has always influenced their style. Across this collection of "sonic landscapes" (as described by Massey) you'll hear the booming acid electro of first single "Tokyo Tokyo" and "The Ludwig Question", through to off-kilter jams like "Westland", futurist house grooves of "Ujala" and a modern reboot of classic "Angol Argol".

Review: Plenty has changed since Battles exploded onto the scene as one of the freshest bands of that moment. Not least within the outfit itself, with departures and instability seeming to run through the very DNA of this troupe. Nevertheless, some things have certainly stayed the same - in particular the complexity and detail in their sound. Synth math prog rock, without wanting to put too fine a point on it. At times it's almost over-facing, that is until you cut through the chaos and start to truly appreciate how good the nuances and intricacies actually are. Highlights come thick and fast, from opener "Ambulance" which nods to playful classical; re-read through chip music before exploding into hypnotic mania. "IZM", which benefits from the appearance of hip hop duo Shabazz Palaces, nods to turn-of-the-century Beasties Boys or Chemical Brothers. And "Sugar Foot" which takes things down a more organic, vocal-driven route. Intelligent and intellectual, not that we expected anything less.

Review: The best editions of the long running "Back To Mine" series tend to be those where the chosen selector offers up a varied but loosely linked mix of surprising and lesser-known tunes. On their edition, Mercury Prize nominated duo Jungle has done just that. Beginning with the bluesy late night lament of Barbara Moore's "Steam Heart", the pair takes us on a warming and eye-opening journey through Afrobeat (Inflo), glassy-eyed wind-down deep house (Manuel Darquart, Admin's brilliant "Space Cadet"), skewed pop (Mocky), string-laden jazz-funk (Kamaal Williams), Serge Gainsbourg-esque chanson (Sam Evian), drowsy Balearica (Mansur Brown), and loved-up 1960s style dream pop (The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn NY, HNNY).

Review: Earlier this year, PJ Harvey wrote the score to director Ivan van Hove's theatrical adaptation of award winning 1950 film "All About Eve". Like the play itself, the score won praise, with critics acclaiming its' combination of emotion-stirring new musical motifs and the creative way in which Harvey used elements of Franz Liszt's "Liebestraum", a piece of music that featured heavily in the original movie. You can now judge it for yourselves thanks to this recording by Harvey, two fellow musicians and play stars Gillian Anderson and Lily James (each sings one song). We were spellbound, and we think you probably will be too.

Review: A new album from Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points is always cause for celebration, but even by his standards "Crush" is rather special. Largely eschewing the ambient jazz soundscape shuffle of 2017's "Reflections - Mojave Desert", it sees the Shepherd showcase his musical dexterity in stunning fashion via cuts that wrap shimmering neo-classical strings around what sound like modular electronics and rhythms that variously touch on broken beat, off-kilter experimental D&B and Autechre-style IDM. Of course there are ambient and experimental soundscapes showcased, but it's the fact that the album contains a swathe of formidably dancefloor-focused cuts in the style that first made him standout that pleases us most. Highlights include recent single "LesAlpx", the dreamy "Anasickmodular" and the "People's Potential" style deep house intricacy of "Last Bloom".

Review: Tender, heartfelt, longing and packing sonic elements that can make even the most lovelorn and hopeless start swooning with the thought of what might be still to come for them. Canadian troubadour Patrick Watson's latest is nothing if not dripping in emotion, and that's not just a reference to his soft, thoughtful and thought-provoking voice. In many ways it seems impossible that such a gentile record can bowl the listener over with such force. But once you hit midway-point stunner "Melody Noir", with its subtle brass and "La La" chorus, it becomes clear that it's not only possible, but apparently rather easy for the songwriter in question. None of which is to say this is some wet Wednesday, mind. On his sixth long-form outing, Watson is nothing if not the experienced man who has seen it all.

Review: Heart-on-sleeve isn't always the phrase you'd use to describe Mark Lanegan. Yet here on his 11th studio album the gravelly-voiced rock icon seems intent on making his exact feelings clear, which seem to centre on his appreciation of some of the UK's archetypal post punk and proto-electronic-indie outfits. "Playing Nero" and "Dark Disco Jag" in particular seem to owe much to the likes of New Order and Joy Division. These are no cheap knock-offs, though, and instead cement Lanegan's status as a hugely talented powerhouse of a rocker who's unafraid to call upon influences from psychedelic to New Wave as and when he feels like it, turning the whole thing into a collection of inescapable genius and unarguable talent. Great to have him back, and long may his fine form continue.

Review: It's not just in the album title that Newcastle bard Richard Dawson is ahead of his time. His dark sense of humour and sweaty barroom gig sonics break through the noise, identifying, tackling but not seeking to solve the problems currently facing British society. What could be more post-modern than that? The UK right now is a fractured and somewhat broken island struggling to come to terms with its own place in the modern world. It's also filled with people struggling to come to terms with this reality. Focusing on portraits of those lost souls, it's poignant, cutting and lyrically hard-hitting. A bold and mammoth concept for an album, the instrumentation is even bigger, easing up on the blues and folk of his formative years to allow more room for pop to break through. The result is proof that in times of desperation a nation can at least rely on its artists to offer some hope that all is not completely lost.

Review: In 2017, Jaimie Branch emerged from Chicago's spiritual and experimental jazz underground with a debut album of rare inventiveness. Two years on, the avant-garde, improvisational trumpeter is finally ready to offer up a sequel, "Fly Or Die II: Bird Dogs Of Paradise". It sees Branch wrap distinctive trumpet refrains - some played in a traditional manner, others mutilated by effects units - around a myriad of off-kilter and improvised backing tracks. While much of the instrumentation is from the jazz playbook, a number of tracks make great use of xylophone, mbira and other exotic but melodic percussion instruments. The album's standout moment, "Prayer For Amerikkka (Part 1 & 2)" sees her go even further, with vocalists and beat poets narrating a politically charged, future spiritual jazz anthem.

Review: Those who remember the debut album from Laetitia Tamko back in 2017 would probably have expected this follow up to continue down the route of guitar grit and uncompromising rock sensibilities. Not so, at all, but the switch of gear is less disappointment and more unexpected surprise. On her second long form Vagabon soars through magical, blissful melodies, deep, heartfelt pop overtures and delicate, summer-afternoon ballroom dance outings. The result reveals a very different side to the artist from our previous encounters, one that is at once destined to find her a broader audience and yet feels determined to appeal to more specialised ears. Packed with yearning desire, folk-y details and the kind of downtempo stunners that slowly lure you in, expanding and immersing with each passing bar, where from here is anyone's guess, but we're keen to find out.

Review: Previously, French producer Gary Gritness has carved a niche as a creator of hard-wired revivalist electro and boogie, delivering slightly more eclectic - but wholeheartedly electronic - albums for Hypercolour and others. His latest project is a little different. It sees him join forces with two musician friends to deliver an album of radical new (mostly electronic) interpretations of Don Cherry's jazz-fusion works. All seven tracks were recorded live in the studio using a mixture of dusty drum machines, synthesizers, percussion, acoustic instrumentation (Spanish guitar, saxophone) and the musicians' own voices. The results are superb, delivering intergalactic and often wonderfully out-there covers of Cherry compositions that sound like they were beamed down from some far-off tech-jazz galaxy.

Review: Cheick Tidiane Seck's latest album is something of an all-star affair. It sees a banquet's worth of guest musicians (including fellow African music legend Manu Dibango) help the Malian music maestro send "an Afro-Jazz prayer" to the late, great Randy Weston - a musician whose unique Pan-African vision influenced so many of his contemporaries. The resultant set is vibrant and alluring, with Seck and company underpinning Weston's fluid jazz piano motifs with dense, heavy, intricate and often delightfully polyrhythmic rhythms. There are some more atmospheric and intoxicating numbers present, too - the version of "Timbuktu" is stunning, as is the bluesy "In Memory Of" - but the album's greatest calling card remains it's energetic and effervescent approach.
