Review: Fresh from the first two successful singles of his solo career, Billy Idol was one of the most recognisable faces in the early 80s, with his popularity rising in tandem with the rise of the music video thanks to MTV. The follow up album to his eponymous debut, Rebel Yell would prove to be his most successful and the most critically acclaimed of his career, with hits coming out of its ears. 'Eyes Without A Face', 'Flesh For Fantasy', 'Catch My Fall' and the title track 'Rebel Yell' all helped to make one of the highest selling records of 1982, making Billy a household name. Musically, Rebel Yell is a new wave album with hard rock and other influences. Steve Stevens powerful guitar riffs that helped fuel Billy Idol's singing were a match made in heaven. Ironically, the album also broke barriers as being a rock album powered by a drum machine - setting a trend that ZZ Top, Iggy Pop and even Judas Priest would follow in subsequent years. Review: On its 20th anniversary comes a reissue of No Doubt's 1992-2003 singles collection, which brings together the very best of the ska and pop rockers' contributions to music at large over their first decade of stardom. Known as the alt-rock group fronted by Gwen Stefani, No Doubt were a formative act for the spreading of a distinctly American, pop-oriented form of ska punk. With Gwen's brother Eric on keys, and with bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young also in tow, No Doubt's career was a slow-burning exponential curve skywards, which saw a successful takeoff despite some early flops. Review: Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. The Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes sampling "Exhange" and "Exchange" remain a delight in particular.

There is no point in trying to come up with some pseudo-academic wordsmithery about the cultural contribution that Swedish pop band Aqua made to the musical world. But nor can we slay these sounds either, though, because for a short while they were everywhere and lapped up by everyone. The charm of the Euro-dace was in its nativity, its silliness, its innocence, but also the deceptive simplicity of the MIDI beats and catchy vocal choruses. Review: First released in 1998, the last album from the sadly missed Mark Hollis was originally set to be a Talk Talk album, scheduled to follow up 1991's "Laughing Stock". Described by engineer Phil Brown as "open, restful and at times fantastically beautiful", Hollis' only solo effort is quite the opposite of the dark and claustrophobic direction of Talk Talk's final album. Entirely self-produced, the record takes Talk Talk's pared back, emotive intimacy further into yet more minimal, private territory, of sometimes almost unbearable intensity. A complex, compelling last dispatch from an indisputable genius.

Review: It has been said before that Polly Jean Harvey's 1998 album, Is This Desire, marked a watershed moment in her career. A veritable coming of age record that failed to match the commercial heights of To Bring You My Love, but was actually a far more complete and personal thing. Less angry than preceding efforts, it painted a more balanced and accurate portrait of an artist whose formative years were pockmarked with media analysis and criticism of her visible powerful attributes - sexuality and fury.
Coupled with the fact that Harvey has never been one to pander to scenes in the hope of top ten chart success, and you can only imagine how happy she was with the finished product. Review: Two decades have passed since Massive Attack signaled a new stage in their career with the dark, paranoid and claustrophobic brilliance of "Mezzanine", their third studio album. Given the current global political climate, it arguably sounds even more relevant 20 years after it first hit stores. This time round, the re-mastered original set comes accompanied by something none of us have heard before: Mad Professor's complete dub translation, which was slated for release around the turn of the Millennium but for one reason or another never came out. Like his take on "No Protection", it's an inspired set of revisions that takes 3D and Daddy G's dense and red-eyed originals into wild new bass-heavy places. Even if you own the original version already, it's well worth picking up this special edition just for that alone.

Review: It seems fitting that the Temptations are marking an astonishing 60 years in the business with a new album whose most impactful track, 'When We Were Kings', is a gorgeously nostalgic, loved-up telling of their own history. It's fitting, too, that the set is largely classic in sound (the hip-hop soul style opener excepted), mixing elements of 1960s, '70s. '80s and '90s soul, and that the now octogenarian group are still capable of belting out vocals as sweetly and soulfully as they did back in the day. There are plenty of other nods to their lengthy history dotted across the album, too, including a song recorded with Motown contemporary Smokey Robinson and an updated version of 'Come On', a song some of their members first recorded way back in 1959.

Review: Is Wendy Carlos one of the most underrated and overlooked of the female synth pioneers? It probably depends who you ask, with the die hard archivists no doubt ready to stand up and scream "who doesn't remember, respect, and revere her?" Review: Remastered at Abbey Road studios, 'Flesh & Blood' saw the first studio album made after the departure of drummer Paul Thompson. With his absence, the British rock group moved to a more accessible and palatable sound that paid off, earning the group their first No.1 Album since 1973 with 'Stranded'. The tone of Brian Ferry's vocal is of melancholy and depression, of unrequited love with a woman who ultimately can't stand the sight of him. The album was a huge hit in the UK but has been lost in the greater discussion of Roxy Music records either due to living in the shadow of the immensely popular 'Avalon' (a la 'Good Kid m.a.a.d City' to 'To Pimp a Butterfly') or thanks to the slamming negative review from Rolling Stone sealing its poor rating with American audiences. 42 years on, the album is finally being given the treatment it deserved on release - 'Oh Yeah!' and 'Rain, Rain, Rain' were arguably a few years ahead of their time and are just a sample of the great instrumental and vocals on this album.

Review: The 1982 glam-rock swan song for British rock group Roxy Music sees another limited reissue, a departure from the more edgy and abrasive sounds the group went for prior. The word that people constantly use to describe 'Avalon' is mature, in multiple senses of the word. At its core, the record is sensual and seductive make-out material, a 10 track package pining on romance named after the fantastical romantic gesture of King Arthur's body being sent to the titular island. It's plain to see why 'Avalon' is the band's most acclaimed and influential project, spawning off other New Wave acts like Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Tears for Fears. 'More Than This', the title track, has stood the test of time and is still playlisted and cited as one of the greatest British New Wave tracks of all time. 'Avalon' is accessible, seductive and, without doubt, a classic.

Review: It was big news when Daft Punk were enlisted to record the soundtrack to Disney's remake of Tron. While the film has perhaps faded from view slightly, the soundtrack remains a popular notch in the French duo's latter-day legacy. Here, we get treated to a reissue of the big budget remix collection which came out in 2011. It's a neat snapshot of the electronic music landscape at the time, ranging from The Glitch Mob to M83, Moby to Paul Oakenfold, Boys Noize to Photek and the late, great Avicii. You certainly wouldn't get the same cast of characters together for a similar package now, making this a document of the era as well as an essential collection of premier league dance music.

Review: The second studio album from Yello was added to the pantheons of weirdo electronic pop some time ago. In fact, some 31 years ago to be exact. While not by any stretch the outfit's most famous effort, that belongs to fourth album, Stella, and in particular the 1980s movie anthem 'Oh Yeah', in many ways that track doesn't encapsulate the spirit of the band anything like the tunes here.
At times low slung ('Ballet Mecanique') and occupying a space somewhere between roots and fairground, in other moments tragically epic and approaching New Romanticism ('Quad El Habib'), while the music itself is wildly varied and unarguably original, the overall magic is still found in how much fun it sounds like they were having, and how much fun we have hearing it.

Review: Back when the Space Girls burst onto the scene they very much upset older more conservative adults who were terrified by Girl Power and scant outfits. Looking back now it all seems so very tame compared to what the youth of the day are subject to by everyone from Katy Perry to Cardi B. Spiceworld was their second studio album and came in November 1997 and so gets a 25th-anniversary reissue. The tunes hold up as delightfully innocent pop nuggets with classic like 'Spice Up Your Life' and 'Stop' all sure to get you going.

Review: Thrash metal "Big 4" alumni, Megadeth, make their much-anticipated return this year with, 'The Sick, The Dying & The Dead.' The sixteenth full-length from the speedy, war-obsessed titans marks their first album since 2016's, 'Dystopia', making it the longest gap between projects frontman Dave Mustaine has ever allowed to transpire. Featuring drummer Dirk Verbeuren making his debut with the group, as well as bass duties being handled by Steve Di Giorgio of Testament (following the controversial dismissal of long-time member David Ellefson), the progressive-metal leaning material has been poured over to an astute degree. With a seething, near-seven-minute epic, 'Night Stalkers', boasting an Ice-T collaboration (whose love for the metal scene appears to have been totally rekindled by his revival of Body Count), Mustaine and co seem utterly determined to make Megadeth's epic return as dynamic, diverse and memorable as possible. Strap in for an endless barrage of shredding riffage, complex solos, and of course, the signature snarl which their frontman has practically made an artform all on its own.
